The cheapest electric-vehicle policy is not necessarily the least expensive after a claim. Compare the premium, every applicable excess, battery wording, charging-equipment cover, repair arrangements and the help you receive if the car is immobilised. An EV can usually be insured under ordinary comprehensive motor insurance; a “specialist” label does not, by itself, mean broader protection.

Which? car-insurance expert Dean Sobers puts the issue plainly: “In our recent survey of 25 insurers, all said they cover EVs (and hybrids, too). But two policies that will theoretically cover your EV won’t necessarily offer all the same benefits.” Use the policy booklet and quote documents—not the product name—as your comparison.

Start with the cover you would actually claim on

Obtain the full policy wording, schedule, quote summary and details of any optional extras for each candidate policy. Record the terms in the same order so differences are visible. A premium comparison alone can hide a large voluntary excess, a battery exclusion or a courtesy car that is unavailable when you need it.

Build a side-by-side record

Item What to record Why it matters
Price Annual premium, instalment total and payment charges The cheapest monthly figure can cost more over a year.
Excesses Compulsory, voluntary and any separate battery, glass, theft or young-driver excess Your real claim contribution may be higher than the headline excess.
Vehicle and drivers Exact model and battery specification, named drivers, use, mileage, parking and business use Cover and price are vehicle- and risk-specific.
Battery Accidental damage, fire, theft, failure, degradation and lease arrangements Insured damage is treated differently from mechanical failure or wear.
Charging equipment Cable, adaptor and wallbox; locations, limits, insured events and liability Equipment may be covered only in certain places or circumstances.
Repairs Approved network, EV/high-voltage capability, non-network consequences and guarantee Repairer choice can affect safety, excess and service.
Mobility Breakdown recovery, recovery to a charger, courtesy-car type, duration and triggers Benefits may be optional, limited to particular claims or unavailable after total loss.
Total loss Settlement basis, replacement-car terms and treatment of leased batteries An apparent “replacement vehicle” promise may not apply to every write-off.

Mark whether each benefit is included or requires an add-on. If a document does not state a limit, do not assume there is none; ask the insurer to confirm it in writing.

Read the documents in the right order

Start with the quote and schedule to identify the selected vehicle, drivers, excesses and optional benefits. Then check the policy wording for definitions, exclusions, claim conditions and territorial limits. Finally, read endorsements or add-on wording, because a breakdown package or courtesy-car upgrade can alter the standard terms. Keep the version date and distribution channel with your notes: the same insurer can offer different benefits through a broker, a comparison site or a direct sale, and wording can change at renewal.

Compare premium and excess together

The excess is the amount you pay toward an accepted claim. A compulsory excess is set by the insurer. A voluntary excess is chosen by you and can reduce the quoted premium, but it increases the cash you must produce after an accident. Which? advises selecting a higher voluntary excess only when you could comfortably afford it at claim time.

Look for claim-specific excesses

Some policies apply a different excess to glass, theft, battery or charging-equipment claims, and a young or inexperienced driver may have an additional amount. Ask whether a non-approved repairer changes the excess or adds a contribution. Enter the highest plausible combination in your comparison sheet, rather than comparing only the standard figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the cost you pay whether or not you claim from the cost triggered by a claim. Include the full annual premium when paid monthly, any instalment or finance charge, the excess for the likely claim type, and transport or equipment costs that the policy leaves to you. This gives a more realistic “total claim exposure” than a headline monthly price.

Use market statistics as snapshots

Confused.com reported an average EV insurance quote of £657 for October to December 2025, as reported by Which?. For the same period, Which? gave comparison figures of £854 for petrol and £818 for diesel. These are dated averages, not personal quotes or a prediction for every EV. The relative ranking can change with the models, drivers and timing used, so use your own quote documents for a decision.

Separate battery accidents from battery failure

Ask exactly which battery events are insured. Accidental damage, fire and theft may be covered under comprehensive insurance, subject to the policy’s exclusions and excess. Failure, deterioration, wear, loss of capacity and reduced performance are generally treated like mechanical wear rather than an insured accident.

Which? explains the distinction this way: “Generally speaking, your car insurance policy won’t cover you for a failure of the battery, just as it wouldn’t pay out if you need a new clutch or your brake pads wear out.” That is general guidance, not a substitute for your wording. Ageas likewise says the battery protection described on its own policy page does not cover failure or reduction in performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the battery is leased

Check the battery-lease contract separately. Establish what the lease provider insures, who pays for accidental damage or replacement, and whether the main motor insurer must be notified. Tell the motor insurer that the battery is leased and keep both contracts available when making a claim. A policy covering the car does not automatically settle every obligation under a separate lease.

Ask about a write-off

Find out how a total loss is valued and whether the settlement includes or accounts for the battery when it is leased. Confirm whether replacement-vehicle or new-car benefits apply to your exact vehicle, age and claim circumstances. Do not infer these terms from a battery warranty or lease guarantee.

Use concrete claim scenarios when asking questions

Ask the insurer to explain the outcome for a collision that damages the battery casing, a fire in a parked car, theft of the whole vehicle, theft of a loose cable, and gradual loss of driving range. These examples force a distinction between an insured event and deterioration. Also ask what evidence is needed: photographs, a diagnostic report, proof of ownership or the lease agreement. The answer may identify a sub-limit or excess that is not obvious in a summary table.

Check cables, adaptors, wallboxes and liability

Charging equipment is not one uniform category. Ask about each item separately:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Portable charging cable and any adaptor
  • A cable stored inside the car
  • Equipment kept at home or in a locked garage
  • A permanently installed wallbox
  • The cable while connected in a public place

For every item, confirm the insured events (such as theft, accidental damage or fire), the limit, the excess and the location condition. A cable covered in a locked garage may not have the same protection when left in an unlocked area or attached at a public charger.

Charging-cable liability

Ask what happens if a cable causes third-party injury or property damage—for example, someone trips over it while your car is charging. Some policies include public-liability protection for this scenario; others may rely on a different section or exclude it. Confirm whether the wording requires the cable to be attached to the car, and whether it applies at home, on a driveway, in a car park or on a public pavement.

Ageas provides an illustration of why wording matters: its page describes cable cover when cables are in the car or locked in a garage and sets a condition for cable liability while the cable is attached to the car. It also says its home-charger-point benefit depends on buying directly rather than through a broker. Those are that insurer’s terms, not a market-wide rule.

Coordinate motor and home insurance

Ask your home insurer which policy responds to a wallbox, the building fabric and damage caused by a home-charging incident. The Association of British Insurers’ February 2026 cross-product principles say a permanently installed, hard-wired charger and resulting property damage would typically fall under home insurance, while stressing that claims are assessed case by case. Confirm the position with both insurers before installation and keep evidence of professional installation and maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assess repair quality, control and guarantees

Electric vehicles can require high-voltage isolation, battery handling and manufacturer-specific diagnostics. Ask whether the insurer’s approved repair network is equipped and trained for your vehicle, and whether the policy allows a manufacturer-approved or independent EV repairer.

Approved-repairer conditions

  • Is the insurer entitled to direct the car to a particular network?
  • What happens to your excess, claim service or guarantee if you choose another repairer?
  • Will genuine or equivalent parts be used, and is calibration of safety systems included?
  • How long is the repair guaranteed, and who stands behind the guarantee?

Get answers before buying. A broad promise to “repair your car” does not establish who performs the work or how long the repair is supported.

Ask about battery and structural damage

Confirm how the insurer handles damage to the traction battery, battery casing, charging system and high-voltage wiring after an impact. Ask whether a specialist assessment is required before the vehicle is declared safe to drive, and how storage and recovery are arranged if the battery may be damaged. These operational details can affect claim time even when the policy covers the event.

Check how the policy keeps you mobile

Breakdown and low-charge recovery

Do not assume ordinary roadside assistance will take an EV to a charger. Check whether recovery after running out of charge is included, bundled with breakdown cover, limited to the nearest suitable charging point or unavailable. Which?’s January 2026 comparison table shows materially different arrangements among the policies it listed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the benefit applies only after the car has reached zero charge, or also when a fault prevents charging. Confirm whether the recovery provider can transport an EV safely, whether a destination charger is specified, and whether there is a limit on call-outs. If recovery is an optional add-on, include its price in the annual comparison.

Courtesy cars

Read the trigger, duration and vehicle specification. A courtesy car may apply only while an insured repair is being completed, may be optional, may stop at a total loss and may be a petrol or diesel car. Confirm whether the benefit is guaranteed or subject to availability and whether business use, age or licence restrictions apply.

In its review of 66 policies, Which? reported that only one tenth potentially offered a hybrid or electric courtesy car during repairs; only LV was reported to guarantee one, under optional cover. The table was last updated in January 2026. This describes that reviewed set, not a permanent market share, so verify the current schedule.

Plan for a total loss

A courtesy car commonly relates to an authorised repair, so ask what happens if the vehicle is declared a total loss. Establish how long mobility continues, whether a replacement-car extension is available, and whether the benefit ends when a settlement is offered. Ask separately about a leased battery, because the motor settlement and the lease provider’s obligations may not follow the same timetable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure the policy fits your use

Before comparing prices, make the risk details identical across quotes:

  • Exact vehicle variant, battery size and registration details
  • All regular drivers and their ages, occupations and driving history
  • Social, commuting or business use
  • Expected annual mileage
  • Overnight parking and where the car is normally charged
  • Ownership, finance or battery-lease status
  • Security devices and storage arrangements for cables

A quote based on lower mileage, a different address or a restricted-use classification is not a fair comparison with a quote using your actual circumstances. Tell the insurer about material changes before renewal. Make sure the same assumptions are used on every comparison site and direct quotation; otherwise a cheaper result may simply contain less use or a narrower driver declaration.

Compare policies by realistic situations

After filling in the table, test each policy against the situations most relevant to your household:

  • Minor accident: note the glass or damage excess, approved-repairer requirement and whether a courtesy car starts immediately.
  • Serious collision: check battery assessment, safe storage, recovery and the total-loss settlement process.
  • Fire or theft: check whether the battery and charging cable are included, and whether separate theft or equipment excesses apply.
  • Low charge: verify the destination and limits of recovery assistance.
  • Home charging incident: establish whether the wallbox, building damage and third-party loss are handled by home or motor insurance.
  • Battery deterioration: expect this to be treated differently from accidental damage and ask what warranty or lease route applies instead.

A policy that looks weaker on one scenario may be better on another. The point is to identify the trade-off deliberately rather than discover it during a stressful claim.

A practical comparison process

  1. Collect the documents. Download the policy wording, schedule, quote summary and optional-benefit descriptions for at least two policies.
  2. Standardise the assumptions. Use the same vehicle, drivers, address, mileage, use and payment method for each quote.
  3. Enter the claim cost. Record compulsory and voluntary excesses, then add any separate excess that could apply to the claim types you care about.
  4. Mark battery outcomes. Highlight accidental damage, fire and theft, then separately record exclusions for failure, degradation and lease responsibilities.
  5. Map charging equipment. List the cable, adaptor and wallbox, their locations, limits, insured events and liability conditions.
  6. Test repair control. Identify the approved network, EV capability, non-network consequences and repair guarantee.
  7. Test mobility. Record low-charge recovery, charger destination, courtesy-car triggers, duration, vehicle type and total-loss treatment.
  8. Ask unresolved questions in writing. Keep the insurer’s answer with the quote; a call-centre impression is not a policy amendment.
  9. Compare the worst realistic claim. Add the premium paid before the incident to the excess, uninsured equipment or transport costs and any benefit you would have to buy separately.
  10. Recheck at renewal. Premiums, optional benefits, approved networks and policy versions can change; repeat the document comparison rather than relying on last year’s assumptions.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing a specialist label

“Specialist EV” branding does not prove wider cover, while ordinary comprehensive policies may insure EVs. Compare the clauses that affect your car.

Comparing only the compulsory excess

The voluntary amount and claim-specific excesses determine what you may actually pay. Record them together.

Assuming degradation is accidental damage

A battery that gradually loses capacity is generally treated differently from a battery damaged in a collision, fire or theft. Ask for the exact trigger and evidence required.

Assuming a wallbox is covered by motor insurance

Permanent home equipment may fall under home insurance, and the ABI says typical handling is case by case. Confirm responsibility before a loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every courtesy car is electric

EV or hybrid replacement vehicles are uncommon in the Which? review cited above, and even an electric-car promise may be optional or availability-dependent.

Ignoring non-approved repairs

Using a repairer outside the insurer’s network may change the excess, parts terms or guarantee. Establish the consequence before you need repairs.

Relying on a comparison-site summary

Summary boxes can omit sub-limits, conditions or optional-benefit costs. Use them to find candidates, then read the schedule and policy wording and save the version you relied on.

Questions to ask before buying

  • What is the total annual cost, including instalment charges?
  • What compulsory, voluntary and claim-specific excesses could apply?
  • Are accidental battery damage, fire and theft covered, and are failure or degradation excluded?
  • Who insures a leased battery and what must I disclose?
  • Are my cable, adaptor and wallbox covered at home, in the car and in public?
  • What liability applies if a cable injures someone or damages property?
  • Which repairers can work on my EV’s high-voltage system, and how long is the repair guaranteed?
  • Will you recover me to a charger after running out of charge?
  • When does a courtesy car apply, for how long, and is it guaranteed to be electric?
  • How is a total loss settled, including any leased-battery obligations?

Policy terms vary by insurer, vehicle, distribution channel and policy version. Recheck the documents at purchase and renewal, and treat insurer-specific examples as examples rather than promises about the whole market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need specialist EV insurance?

Not necessarily. Which? reported that all 25 insurers in its survey said they cover electric cars and hybrids. An ordinary comprehensive policy may be suitable, but compare battery, charging, repair and mobility terms rather than relying on a specialist label.

Are electric-car battery failures covered by insurance?

Generally, no. Which? says a failure is usually treated like a worn clutch or brake pads. Accidental damage, fire and theft can be different insured events. Check the exact exclusions, and use the vehicle warranty or a battery-lease agreement where appropriate.

How should I choose a voluntary excess?

A higher voluntary excess can lower the premium, but only choose it if you could pay the compulsory and voluntary amounts together after a claim. Check for additional excesses for glass, theft, battery, equipment or young drivers.

Is a home wallbox covered by motor insurance?

It may be dealt with under home insurance instead. ABI principles dated February 2026 say a permanently installed, hard-wired charger and resulting property damage would typically fall under home insurance, but claims are assessed case by case. Ask both insurers and keep installation records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my courtesy car be electric?

Do not assume so. Which? reviewed 66 policies and reported that only one tenth potentially offered a hybrid or electric courtesy car during repairs; only LV was reported to guarantee one under optional cover. Check the vehicle type, duration, trigger and availability condition.

What happens if my EV runs out of charge?

Breakdown assistance may or may not include recovery to a charger. Confirm whether it is included, an add-on, limited to the nearest suitable point or unavailable, and whether the same benefit applies when a charging fault—not low charge—immobilises the car.

How do I insure a leased battery?

Read the lease contract, identify what the lease provider insures, and tell the motor insurer the battery is leased. Ask how accidental damage, theft, replacement and a total loss are coordinated so that the car policy does not leave a separate lease obligation unresolved.

Can I use my own EV repairer?

Only if the policy permits it on acceptable terms. Ask whether choosing a non-approved repairer changes the excess, parts specification, claim handling or repair guarantee, and whether the repairer has the required EV and high-voltage capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose the policy that leaves you able to pay and recover, repair and replace the car after the claims you can realistically face—not simply the one with the lowest premium. Compare every excess, battery and charging condition, repairer rule, recovery benefit and courtesy-car trigger in the current documents, then confirm unresolved points in writing.
