How to Compare EV Charging Speeds Using Charge Curves, Not Peak Power

Peak kW is only one point on an EV’s charging session. This guide explains how to compare charge curves over the same SOC window, interpret taper, and avoid misleading charger-versus-vehicle claims.

The fastest-looking EV is not necessarily the one with the highest advertised kilowatt figure. To compare charging speed fairly, compare each vehicle’s accepted power over the same battery state-of-charge (SOC) window, then consider how quickly power rises, how long it stays high, and where it tapers. A charge curve shows that complete session profile; peak power is only its highest point.

This method also keeps the charger and the car separate. A station may be rated for hundreds of kilowatts, but the vehicle, its battery temperature and SOC, and the site’s electrical limits determine how much power actually reaches the battery.

What an EV charge curve shows

A charge curve plots charging power in kilowatts against battery SOC or elapsed time. If the horizontal axis is SOC, you can see how much power the vehicle accepts at 10%, 30%, 60% or 80% charge. If the axis is time, you see the power profile during a session but must identify the starting SOC before comparing it with another test.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) describes its modeled curves as vehicle charging power in kilowatts as a function of battery SOC. That wording matters: the curve is intended to represent power accepted by the vehicle, not simply the maximum output printed on a charging cabinet.

The three parts of a typical curve

  • Ramp: Power rises after the connector is engaged and the vehicle completes its charging handshake. The speed and height of this rise affect how much energy is added during the first minutes.
  • Plateau or sustained region: The vehicle holds a relatively high level for part of the session. This area often contributes more to a short road-trip stop than the isolated maximum.
  • Taper: Power declines as SOC increases. NREL’s modeled vehicle-class curves generally show a significant reduction around 80%–85% SOC, although the exact shape varies by vehicle type and model year.

Two cars can therefore share a 250 kW peak while delivering very different results. One may reach 250 kW briefly and taper early; another may peak lower but sustain a strong level through most of the interval you use on a trip.

Why peak kW is an incomplete comparison

Peak power is a maximum, not an average. It does not tell you how long the vehicle remains near that value, the SOC at which it occurs, or the amount of energy added before tapering begins. A headline number also says nothing about the starting battery temperature, the charger’s actual available output, or the ending SOC.

Charging time depends on several linked variables. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) identifies battery depletion (SOC), battery capacity, battery type, the vehicle’s internal charging capability, charging equipment and output, and the electrical service as relevant factors. “Charging power varies by vehicle and battery state of charge,” so a high-rated station cannot guarantee a high accepted rate throughout a session.

Charger rating versus vehicle acceptance

Think of the station rating as an upper limit on what the site can supply. The vehicle’s battery-management system decides how much power to request and accept at each moment. If a car can accept 150 kW under the current conditions, plugging it into a 350 kW or 500 kW station does not turn it into a 350 kW car.

Conversely, a vehicle capable of more than 150 kW cannot use that capability if the charger, shared cabinet or electrical service is limiting output. Always label a figure as either charger output capability or vehicle-accepted power; combining the two creates a misleading comparison.

Choose a comparable SOC window

The first practical rule is to compare the same starting and ending SOC. A 10%–80% comparison is useful only when both vehicles were measured over that interval. A 5%–60% test and a 20%–80% test are not equivalent, even if their peak figures look similar.

Why the window changes the result

Most vehicles deliver their strongest power at lower SOC, then reduce power as the battery fills. A car that starts at 5% may spend more time in its high-power region than the same car starting at 35%. A stop ending at 80% may avoid much of the taper that makes an 80%–100% session disproportionately long.

NREL’s 80%–85% reduction is a modeled pattern across broad vehicle classes and model years, not a universal cutoff for every current model. Use it as a reminder to inspect the curve rather than as a rule that every vehicle changes power at exactly the same SOC.

Record the window before reading the headline number

  1. Write down the starting SOC and ending SOC.
  2. Confirm whether the source uses SOC on the horizontal axis or elapsed time.
  3. Note whether the reported power is vehicle-accepted power or charger output.
  4. Only then record peak power, sustained power and any measured session time.

If two sources use different windows, report those ranges explicitly. Do not present their peak values in one ranking table as though the tests were matched.

A repeatable method for comparing two EVs

Step 1: Identify the evidence and test context

For each curve, record the vehicle model and model year, battery capacity and type when stated, charger capability, starting SOC, ending SOC, and any information about battery temperature or preconditioning. Also note whether the result is a controlled measurement, a manufacturer specification, a modeled estimate or an observed session.

Model year belongs in the comparison because charging behavior can change with battery chemistry, software and thermal controls. A broad vehicle-class model should not be presented as a measurement of a named current car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Align the SOC range

Use an interval that both sources actually provide. If one curve covers 10%–80% and the other covers 10%–70%, either find a common 10%–70% segment or present the ranges separately. Do not estimate the missing section from a peak value.

Step 3: Read the ramp

Look at the first part of the interval. How quickly does power climb from the initial value? A slow ramp can reduce energy added during a short stop even when the eventual peak is impressive. A sharp ramp may be useful when a driver has only a few minutes.

Step 4: Measure the sustained region

Identify the power level maintained through the middle of the window and the SOC span over which it is maintained. You can describe this as a range, such as “roughly 120–160 kW through the middle of the tested interval,” only when the curve supports that reading. Avoid converting a visual estimate into false precision.

Step 5: Locate and describe taper

Mark where power begins to fall, how quickly it falls and whether the decline is gradual or abrupt. A vehicle that tapers at 55% SOC may add less energy in a 10%–80% stop than a vehicle with a lower peak but a longer plateau.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Prefer time or energy measurements

When the source provides elapsed time or energy added for the same SOC interval, use it. Charging energy can be expressed as the integral of power over time; in practical terms, the area under the curve determines how much energy reaches the battery. A single peak cannot supply that area.

If no session time or energy figure exists, describe the curve qualitatively and state the limitation. Do not infer an exact 10%–80% time from maximum kW alone.

How to read a curve in practice

Imagine two plotted curves that both advertise a 250 kW maximum. Vehicle A reaches 250 kW at 15% SOC, falls to 140 kW by 45%, and begins a steep taper at 60%. Vehicle B reaches 210 kW at 20% SOC, holds about 190 kW to 55%, and tapers gradually afterward. Without a time axis or energy calculation, you cannot declare a winner for every use case. For a short low-SOC boost, A may add energy quickly; for a longer stop ending near 80%, B’s sustained region could be more important.

This is an illustration of the method, not a test result for a specific vehicle. A published comparison should use measured curves from the same SOC window and identify the conditions behind each line.

What makes charging sessions differ

Battery SOC and capacity

SOC controls the vehicle’s charging request, while battery capacity affects how much energy corresponds to each percentage point. Moving a large battery from 10% to 50% requires more kilowatt-hours than moving a smaller battery through the same percentage range. Therefore, percentages alone do not establish time unless battery size and power are also considered.

Battery type and thermal state

The AFDC lists battery type as one factor in charging time. Temperature is part of the real-world context even when a published source does not provide a complete thermal protocol. Two sessions on the same vehicle can produce different curves if one battery is cold and the other has reached an operating range suitable for fast charging.

Charger and electrical service

AFDC guidance describes DC fast-charging equipment with outputs up to 500 kW. That is equipment capability, not a promise that every connected vehicle will accept 500 kW. The charger may also be power-limited by its electrical service or by sharing power among ports.

Connector and port configuration

In the AFDC’s U.S.-oriented terminology, a station location can contain charging ports, and one port may have multiple connectors. A port supplies one vehicle at a time. DC fast-charging connector systems listed by AFDC include CCS, CHAdeMO and J3400. Compatibility and adoption can change with vehicle model year, so verify the connector for the specific car and date being discussed.

How fast can an EV charge from 10% to 80%?

There is no single answer for all EVs. The time depends on the vehicle’s curve over that exact 10%–80% interval, battery capacity, battery condition, charger capability and electrical service. A peak figure can help identify the theoretical top of the curve, but it cannot determine the session duration.

To answer the question responsibly, publish a measured 10%–80% time with the vehicle, model year, charger, starting conditions and test date. If those details are unavailable, show the curve and explain that only the relative ramp, plateau and taper can be assessed.

Why EV charging slows after 80%

As SOC rises, the vehicle generally reduces charging power to protect the battery and manage cell voltage, heat and balancing. The exact control strategy is vehicle-specific. NREL’s modeled curves commonly show a significant decline around 80%–85% SOC, but that range should not be treated as a universal threshold.

For trip planning, compare the energy gained during the taper with the extra minutes required. A stop that ends before the steepest decline may deliver more useful energy per minute than charging to a higher SOC. That is a planning conclusion based on the curve, not a claim that every vehicle should stop at one fixed percentage.

Does a 350 kW charger make every EV charge faster?

No. A 350 kW station can supply up to its rated capability under appropriate site conditions, but the car may request far less. The vehicle’s internal charger limits, battery SOC and thermal state determine accepted power. A 500 kW-rated site has the same limitation: its rating does not change the vehicle’s charge curve.

When comparing station experiences, report both ratings: the charger’s available output and the vehicle’s observed accepted power. If the station has multiple connectors or shared power electronics, identify whether another vehicle was using the same equipment.

Real-world session statistics: useful context, not a leaderboard

The U.S. Department of Energy Transportation Technologies Office reported about 2.4 million charging sessions from June 30, 2020, through June 30, 2023. In that dataset, paid sessions averaged 42 minutes and 22 kWh; free sessions averaged 78 minutes and 40.7 kWh. The sample consisted of self-selected EV owners nationwide and excluded Tesla Supercharger sessions.

Those figures describe observed sessions across a population, not matched tests of two vehicles. They combine different SOC windows, batteries, chargers and user behavior, so they cannot establish which model charges fastest. They are useful for showing how varied real charging stops can be, not for replacing a charge-curve comparison.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Ranking by peak alone: A brief maximum is treated as the whole session.
  • Mixing SOC windows: A 5%–60% result is placed beside a 20%–80% result without qualification.
  • Confusing station and vehicle power: A 350 kW or 500 kW station rating is reported as though the car accepted it.
  • Ignoring model year: Curves from different software, battery or thermal systems are compared without dates.
  • Turning a model into a test: NREL’s broad class curves are presented as measurements for every current named model.
  • Inferring exact time from a graph peak: No session time or energy measurement is available, but a precise charging duration is claimed.
  • Omitting conditions: Battery temperature, charger sharing, electrical service or preconditioning information is left out when the source provides it.

How to publish a fair charging-speed table

A useful table makes the comparison boundaries visible instead of hiding them in a footnote. Include these fields whenever the evidence provides them:

Field What to report Why it matters
Vehicle and model year Exact designation and year Charging software, battery and thermal hardware can vary.
SOC window Starting and ending percentages Power changes with SOC; unmatched ranges are not equivalent.
Peak accepted power Highest vehicle-accepted kW Shows the maximum, but not its duration.
Sustained region Power range and SOC span when stated Shows how much of the stop occurs near a useful level.
Taper point SOC and severity of decline Reveals the cost of charging toward a fuller battery.
Time or energy Minutes or kWh for the same window Provides the most direct comparison of session output.
Charger context Rated output, connector and sharing status Separates site limits from vehicle limits.
Conditions Temperature, preconditioning and test setting when stated Explains why another session may produce a different curve.

If a source does not provide a value, write “not stated” and identify the source. Do not fill the cell with a guessed number.

Using charge curves for trip decisions

Short stop for minimum extra range

Focus on the ramp and early plateau. A vehicle that reaches a strong accepted rate quickly may add more energy during a brief stop even if another vehicle has a higher eventual peak.

Longer stop ending around 70%–80%

Compare the sustained middle of the curve and the onset of taper. The relevant question is how much energy each vehicle adds before the steep decline, not which one flashes the largest number on the charger screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging beyond 80%

Inspect the post-80% section directly. If the curve falls sharply, the final percentage points may take a disproportionate amount of time. A vehicle with a smoother decline may be more convenient for a trip that requires a high ending SOC, even if its peak is lower.

What the available evidence can and cannot establish

NREL’s modeled short-range-car, long-range-car and SUV/pickup curves are useful for understanding how vehicle class and model year can shape charging behavior. They are not controlled tests of every current vehicle. AFDC provides general guidance on equipment, connectors and the variables that affect charging time; it is not a model-performance leaderboard.

Without matched, current, model-specific tests, a responsible comparison can explain the method and describe the published curves but should not name an overall winner. A winner claim requires the same SOC window, comparable charger capability, equivalent conditions and measured time or energy results.

A checklist for evaluating any charging-speed claim

  • Is the plot power versus SOC or power versus time?
  • Does “power” mean vehicle-accepted power or charger output?
  • What are the starting and ending SOC values?
  • What vehicle model year and battery configuration were tested?
  • Was the battery temperature or preconditioning state reported?
  • What was the charger’s rated output and was power shared?
  • Where does the curve ramp, plateau and taper?
  • Is there measured time or energy for the same interval?
  • Are the results measured, modeled or merely quoted as a specification?
  • Does the conclusion stay within what those conditions support?
