Compare an EV battery warranty on five points: the time-and-mileage limit, whether it covers defects and/or capacity loss, the capacity threshold and test method, the parts included, and the remedy and exclusions. “Eight years” or “70%” is not enough by itself. The exact model year, trim, market, in-service date, mileage, ownership history and warranty booklet control what you can claim.
Start with the clause, not the headline number
An EV warranty can contain several different promises. A battery may be covered against defects in materials and workmanship while normal capacity loss is treated as wear. A separate capacity clause may cover only unusually large loss, often defined by a state-of-health percentage. High-voltage accessories can have their own terms under an EV-system or electrical-drivetrain warranty.

- Start date: identify whether the clock begins at delivery to the first owner, the original in-service date, or another date specified in the booklet.
- Type of protection: separate defect coverage from capacity-loss coverage.
- Threshold and test: record the percentage floor and the manufacturer’s official state-of-health or capacity measurement method.
- Covered hardware: list the battery assembly and each named high-voltage component rather than assuming “battery” means the whole propulsion system.
- Remedy: check whether the manufacturer can repair, replace, refurbish or remanufacture components, and who chooses among those options.
- Exclusions and service rules: note flood or immersion damage, misuse, incompatible charging equipment, maintenance requirements and authorized-repair conditions.
- Transfer: verify whether the remaining protection follows a subsequent owner and whether a certified-used program adds separate coverage.
Keep the vehicle identification number, sale jurisdiction, in-service date and current odometer reading with your copy. A general web page can change; the warranty supplied with the vehicle is the controlling document.

Term and mileage: compare both limits and the start date
Battery warranties are normally written as “X years or Y miles/kilometres, whichever comes first.” A driver who reaches the mileage cap early loses coverage before the calendar term ends, while a low-mileage vehicle can age out with many miles remaining. Convert kilometres to miles only for convenient comparison; use the original unit when deciding eligibility.
Why the in-service date matters
A used EV does not usually receive a fresh battery-warranty period when it changes hands. If the warranty starts at the first in-service date, a vehicle sold three years later has already used three years of the term. Confirm the date in the vehicle record rather than relying on registration or the date you bought it.
How to compare a used vehicle
- Find the original in-service or delivery date in the warranty booklet, service history or manufacturer record.
- Calculate the calendar time remaining.
- Subtract the current odometer from the mileage limit.
- Apply the earlier of those two expiration points.
- Read the transfer section for owner-to-owner conditions, notice requirements and regional restrictions.
Defect coverage is different from capacity coverage
Defects in materials or workmanship
Defect coverage addresses a failure caused by a manufacturing or assembly problem. Depending on the booklet, it may cover the high-voltage battery and specified internal or connected parts. It does not automatically promise a particular driving range after years of use.

All rechargeable batteries lose some usable capacity with time and cycling. Ford’s U.S. owner-manual warranty content states: “The high voltage battery will experience gradual capacity loss with time and use, similar to all batteries, which is considered normal wear and tear.” Ford then provides a separate capacity promise when loss becomes excessive. Other manufacturers use different wording and thresholds, so do not transfer Ford’s interpretation to another brand.

A capacity clause generally requires the measured state of health to fall below a stated percentage of beginning-of-life or original capacity during the covered period. The threshold is a contractual trigger, not a prediction of typical degradation or battery life expectancy.
Capacity thresholds and tests: the dashboard range is not the verdict
Displayed range is affected by temperature, recent driving, speed, terrain, climate-control use, tire pressure, software calculations and driver behavior. It is therefore not a definitive capacity test. A warranty claim normally requires the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
What to record
- The reference capacity: original, beginning-of-life or another value defined in the booklet.
- The threshold: for example, below 70% or below 75% state of health.
- The test location and authorized technician requirement.
- Whether the maker can repeat or control the test under specified conditions.
- Whether the test result applies to the whole pack or a defined usable-energy measurement.
Who controls the measurement and outcome
Ford states that “The measurement method used to determine the high voltage battery capacity, and the decision of whether to repair, replace, or provide reconditioned or remanufactured parts, and the condition of any such replaced, reconditioned or remanufactured parts, are at the sole discretion of Ford Motor Company.” Tesla likewise says its range estimate is an imperfect capacity indicator and that Tesla controls the measurement method and the decision to repair, replace or provide reconditioned or remanufactured parts. A threshold crossing therefore does not guarantee a brand-new battery pack.

| Manufacturer or rule | Published term and capacity condition | What the comparison actually tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla, current U.S. vehicle-warranty page | Eight years; 100,000, 120,000 or 150,000 miles depending on model and trim; minimum 70% capacity retention. | There is no single Tesla mileage limit. Use the exact vehicle’s supplied warranty. Tesla also lists optional extended-service agreements, including a battery-and-drive-unit agreement for eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. |
| Ford, U.S. owner-manual warranty content | Battery-defect coverage: eight years or 160,000 km (99,419.4 miles), whichever comes first. Separate capacity coverage: eight years/99,000 miles (160,000 km); below 70% of beginning-of-life capacity is considered excessive. | Ford controls the capacity test and may repair, replace, or provide reconditioned or remanufactured parts. The manual lists exclusions such as immersion/flooding and misuse. Confirm the manual matches the vehicle. |
| Kia, U.S. warranty page | EV System Warranty: 10 years/100,000 miles. Battery capacity coverage applies below 70% of original capacity for 10 years/100,000 miles, with a covered repair or replacement restoring at least 70%. | The EV System Warranty names the electric motor, high-voltage battery, electric power control unit and on-board charger. Kia’s comparative chart identifies its competitive specifications as based on manufacturer websites as of December 2024. |
| California regulation, covered BEVs and PHEVs | Eight years/100,000 miles; a 70% state-of-health floor for model years 2026–2030 and 75% for model year 2031 and later. | The rule refers to original and subsequent purchasers, but it applies only to vehicles and sales within its legal scope. It is not a nationwide warranty rule. |
| BMW Certified EVs, specified program | BMW USA describes an eight-year/100,000-mile battery-defect warranty. For 2022–2025 BMW Certified EV models, it separately describes capacity coverage below 75% state of health for eight years/100,000 miles from the in-service date. | This is a Certified EV program with a defined model-year scope. Do not apply its 75% promise to every BMW EV or to every new-vehicle warranty. |
These figures are published terms, not a ranking of battery quality. For example, the 70% Kia figure and the 10-year/100,000-mile term are Kia’s current U.S. terms, while California’s 70% and 75% floors are legal requirements for specified model years. Tesla’s mileage cap varies by model and trim. Always compare the exact booklet, not a single number copied from a lineup summary.

What parts are actually covered?
“Battery warranty” can mean the sealed battery assembly only, while an EV-system warranty may name additional propulsion electronics. Make a component-by-component list.
Battery assembly and peripherals
Ask whether the clause includes the cells, modules, pack housing, battery-management or energy-control module, contactors, cooling hardware and specified connectors. Some documents place peripherals under ordinary vehicle coverage even when the battery clause is limited to the pack.
Chargers, inverters and converters
Ford’s cited electrical-drivetrain content lists the high-voltage battery, connector, battery energy control module, on-board charger, inverter-system controller, DC/DC converter and other named drivetrain components, while also explaining that the battery warranty itself is limited to the battery and that peripherals can have standard vehicle coverage. Kia’s EV System Warranty names the electric motor, high-voltage battery, electric power control unit and on-board charger. The applicable clause depends on the failed part and the vehicle’s warranty language.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume a charging fault is a battery fault
A failed wall charger, damaged cable, household wiring problem or incompatible charging device may fall outside the vehicle warranty. Identify whether the symptom originates in the vehicle’s on-board charger, the external equipment or the electrical supply before filing a battery claim.

Remedies: repair, replacement and refurbished parts
Warranty language often gives the manufacturer discretion over the remedy. A qualifying claim may result in a module repair, software or control-component replacement, a replacement pack, or a reconditioned or remanufactured component. The document may specify that the replacement must restore a stated capacity floor rather than match the original pack’s maximum capacity.
Kia’s U.S. page says a covered capacity repair or replacement restores at least 70% of original capacity. Ford and Tesla expressly reserve control over the test and the choice among repair, replacement and reconditioned or remanufactured parts. Ask the service center to identify the clause applied, the measured state of health, the work performed and any warranty on the replacement component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Exclusions and operating conditions that can defeat a claim
Exclusions vary by manufacturer and market. Typical high-risk categories in the cited Ford manual include:
- Battery immersion or flooding.
- Abuse, neglect or misuse.
- Use of incompatible charging devices or methods.
- Damage caused by accidents, modification or unauthorized repair where the booklet excludes it.
Do not assume that an operational error is covered simply because the vehicle stopped driving. Preserve charging equipment, warning messages, diagnostic reports and incident photographs. Follow the booklet’s towing and service instructions; opening or modifying a high-voltage system can create both safety risks and a coverage dispute.

How to compare a new EV before purchase
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record model year, trim, battery size, drivetrain, market and sale state or country.
- Obtain the applicable booklet. Use the vehicle-specific warranty supplied with the car, not only a general marketing page.
- Separate promises. Create rows for battery defects, capacity loss, EV-system components and ordinary vehicle coverage.
- Enter both limits. Record years, miles or kilometres, and the start date.
- Enter the threshold and test. Note the percentage, reference capacity and diagnostic authority.
- List included parts. Mark the battery, motor, inverter, charger, converter, control modules and connectors individually.
- Read the remedy sentence. Highlight language allowing repair, replacement, refurbishment or remanufacture.
- Mark exclusions. Pay special attention to flooding, charging equipment, misuse, accident damage and unauthorized work.
- Check transfer rules. Confirm whether a later owner receives the remaining term and what documentation is required.
- Save evidence. Keep the booklet, VIN-specific warranty status, purchase date and service records together.
How to evaluate a used EV battery warranty
Calculate the remaining protection
Use the original in-service date and current mileage, then apply the first limit reached. A certified-used program may provide an additional promise, but it can have a different threshold, eligible model years or start date. BMW’s cited Certified EV capacity coverage, for example, is specifically described for 2022–2025 BMW Certified EV models and runs eight years/100,000 miles from the in-service date.
Ask for a proper capacity assessment
Do not use a trip computer’s predicted range as proof that the pack is below a contractual floor. Request the manufacturer’s or authorized service center’s state-of-health diagnostic and keep the written result. A pre-purchase inspection can identify fault codes and visible damage, but only the warranty administrator’s defined method decides a capacity claim.
Confirm jurisdiction
California’s regulation expressly addresses original and subsequent purchasers, yet its protection applies only within the rule’s legal scope. A California requirement cannot automatically be applied to an identical vehicle sold elsewhere.
What happens when capacity appears to be below the threshold?
- Check that the vehicle is still inside both the calendar and mileage limits.
- Review the booklet for the exact capacity definition and exclusions.
- Schedule diagnosis through the required authorized channel.
- Provide service history and describe the conditions under which the symptom occurs, without presenting displayed range as a measured capacity result.
- Request the recorded state-of-health result and the clause used to decide eligibility.
- If approved, obtain the proposed remedy in writing, including whether parts are new, reconditioned or remanufactured and what capacity or parts warranty applies afterward.
- If denied, ask for the diagnostic data, exclusion relied upon and appeal or review process stated in the booklet.
A vehicle can show reduced range without meeting the contractual threshold, and a battery can meet a threshold while another covered component has failed. The diagnostic result and the failed part determine which warranty clause applies.
How geography and model year change the comparison
Warranty terms are not universal. A U.S. page may not govern a vehicle sold in Canada, Europe or another market. California’s 70% floor for model years 2026–2030 and 75% floor for 2031 and later is a state-specific legal requirement, not a nationwide standard. The same model name can also have different battery terms by trim, model year or certified-used status.
When comparing two vehicles, place the jurisdiction and model year in the table heading. If a value is not stated in the applicable booklet, write “not stated” rather than inferring it from another market or an earlier model year.
Questions to ask a dealer or service center
- What is this vehicle’s original in-service date and VIN-specific battery-warranty expiration?
- Is the capacity clause separate from defect coverage?
- What percentage threshold applies, and what is the reference capacity?
- Which diagnostic test determines state of health?
- Does the clause cover the on-board charger, inverter, DC/DC converter and control modules?
- Can the remedy use a module repair, reconditioned pack or remanufactured part?
- What exclusions apply to flooding, charging equipment, accidents and modifications?
- Does the warranty transfer automatically to the next owner?
- Is any certified-used coverage additional to, or a replacement for, the original warranty?
Bottom line
The strongest EV battery warranty is not simply the one with the longest term or highest percentage. It is the one whose exact clause gives you a clear capacity threshold and test, covers the components you care about, provides a usable remedy, limits exclusions that fit your use, and remains valid for your vehicle’s market and ownership history. Compare those details side by side, then verify the final answer in the VIN-specific warranty booklet before buying or making a claim.
