How to Compare Electric SUVs for Ground Clearance, Range, and Trail Capability

Compare electric SUVs correctly by matching model year, trim, drivetrain and tires, then evaluate geometry, traction, protection and route-specific range instead of relying on one headline number.

The most reliable way to compare an electric SUV for trail use is to match the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, wheel-and-tire package, and market specification. Start with minimum ground clearance, then check approach, departure, and breakover angles. Add the all-wheel-drive and traction systems, terrain modes, tire specification, and underbody protection. Treat range as a separate route-planning constraint, using the rating for the exact configuration and allowing for charging access along the route. Manufacturer specifications can screen vehicles, but they cannot predict performance on every trail; tires, payload, weather, surface, driving technique, and protection of vulnerable components can change the outcome.

What to compare first

A trail-capable electric SUV is not defined by one number. A vehicle with generous clearance can still strike its front or rear body on a steep transition, hang up on a sharp ridge, or lose traction on loose ground. Conversely, a vehicle with modest clearance may manage a graded gravel road easily if its approach angles, tires, traction controls, and route conditions are favorable.

Build your comparison around four separate questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Will the body clear the terrain? Check minimum ground clearance and the three geometric angles.
  • Can the vehicle maintain traction? Identify the drivetrain, wheel-slip controls, and terrain modes.
  • Will the tires and underbody tolerate the route? Record original tire type and size and look for stated protection of the battery and other low components.
  • Can you complete the route and recharge? Use the range rating for the exact configuration, then map charging distance and time for the intended trip.

Do not combine figures from different trims or model years into one “model” comparison. A badge can cover several suspension heights, wheel sizes, software calibrations, and range ratings.

Ground clearance: use the minimum figure correctly

Minimum clearance is a screening measurement

Minimum ground clearance is the smallest distance between the ground and the vehicle’s lowest exposed point under the stated measuring conditions. It helps identify obvious risks such as rocks, ruts, and trail crowns, but it does not describe every low point. Battery housings, suspension links, aerodynamic panels, and exhaust-free underbody structures can sit at different heights, and the lowest point may not be centered between the tires.

Record the number exactly as published, including units and configuration. Ask whether it applies at curb weight, with a particular wheel package, or to a height-adjustable suspension setting. If the manufacturer does not state those conditions, mark them as unknown instead of assuming the figure is directly comparable.

Trim changes can be substantial

Hyundai’s official US specification page for the 2025 IONIQ 5 lists 6.1 inches of minimum ground clearance on most listed trims and 7 inches on the XRT. That one-inch difference is large enough to change which ruts or rocks are realistic, so an IONIQ 5 comparison that names only the model is incomplete. Label the trim beside the clearance figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer that every “off-road” or adventure appearance package has the same clearance. Verify the suspension and wheel-and-tire configuration in the manufacturer’s table for the model year you are shopping.

Geometry: approach, departure, and breakover angles

Approach angle

The approach angle is the steepest ramp the vehicle can meet without the front bumper or another forward body component contacting the ground. A shorter front overhang generally helps, but the published angle is the number to compare when the measurement conditions are compatible.

Overall Dimension: 41.4”(L) x 25.6”(W) x 20.5”(H); Weight Capacity: 72 LBS; Charge Time: 8-12 Hours; Running Time: 1-2 Hours.

Departure angle

The departure angle describes the steepest ramp the vehicle can leave without the rear bumper or rear body contacting the ground. It matters when dropping off a ledge, cresting a drainage cut, or exiting a steep climb. A tow hitch or accessory can become the lowest rear point, so check whether the published measurement includes it.

Breakover angle

Breakover angle concerns the underside as the SUV crests a sharp ridge. A vehicle can have adequate approach and departure angles yet high-center on the ridge if its wheelbase is long or its center section is low. Compare breakover separately rather than treating it as a result that can be calculated from clearance alone.

An example of a complete geometry entry

Rivian’s published R1S figures are 25 degrees approach, 26 degrees departure, 20.6 degrees breakover, and 245 mm of ground clearance. The page also contains R2 information, so confirm the exact model year and market before placing those numbers beside another SUV. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not an independent trail test.

Traction systems and terrain modes

Drivetrain is more than “AWD”

Write down whether the vehicle uses one motor or multiple motors, how torque is managed between axles, and whether the system offers selectable or automatic wheel-slip control. Two SUVs labeled all-wheel drive can behave differently on diagonally unloaded wheels, wet rock, sand, or mud because their software and motor controls are different.

Look for details on low-speed control, hill descent behavior, accelerator mapping, and the ability to hold a chosen mode. If the manufacturer provides no technical description, record “not stated” rather than assuming a conventional locking differential or a low range.

Terrain modes are useful but are not proof of capability

Subaru describes standard dual-function X-MODE with Grip Control on the 2026 Solterra. Its stated settings include snow, dirt, deep snow, and mud. This is a manufacturer feature description; it does not establish how the Solterra performs on a particular trail or how quickly the system responds under different loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing modes, note the conditions each mode is intended to address and whether it changes throttle response, braking, torque distribution, or stability-control thresholds. A mode that helps on a slippery climb does not increase body clearance or protect the battery from an impact.

Tires, wheels, and underbody protection

Record the original tire specification

Tires are the only part of the SUV that touches the trail. In your worksheet, include the original tire type—highway, all-season, all-terrain, or another designation—plus size, load rating, and sidewall information when published. Also record wheel diameter, because a large wheel with a short sidewall leaves less air volume for cushioning and may be more vulnerable to impact.

Do not recommend a replacement tire from a generic size comparison. Electric SUVs have high curb weights and specific load, speed, clearance, brake, and wheel-well requirements. The material available for this comparison does not establish a universally compatible tire for any of the example vehicles, so fitment must be confirmed for the exact vehicle.

Protection can matter more than a headline angle

Ask what shields the battery enclosure, motor housings, cooling lines, and other vulnerable components. A manufacturer may describe protective panels or reinforced structures, but the absence of a published detail is not evidence that a component is unprotected. Mark protection as “stated,” “not stated,” or “independently verified” only when you have that evidence.

Inspect the lowest points before a trip, especially if the SUV has an aftermarket hitch, running boards, steps, or skid hardware. Accessories can reduce the effective departure angle or clearance even when the factory specification remains unchanged.

Range: compare the exact configuration, then plan the route

Use one rating authority and one configuration at a time

Range numbers are meaningful only when the model year, trim, battery, drivetrain, wheels, and rating authority match. Keep the range column separate from geometry so an attractive clearance figure does not obscure a route-planning problem. If one source gives an EPA value and another gives a manufacturer maximum without an EPA value, label that difference clearly instead of ranking them as if they were equivalent tests.

Subaru’s 2025-model-year feature page says the 2026 Solterra offers up to 288 miles of range. That is a manufacturer-published maximum. Verify the exact EPA value and configuration before comparing it directly with another vehicle; “up to” does not mean every trim achieves 288 miles.

Turn a range rating into a trail plan

  1. Measure the complete route. Include the drive from home to the trailhead, every planned spur, and the return to a reliable charger.
  2. Identify charging access. Record connector type, operating hours, payment requirements, location, and whether the site is on-route or requires a detour. Availability can change, so check the network shortly before departure.
  3. Reserve an energy margin. Do not plan to arrive at a remote trailhead at the vehicle’s displayed zero percent. Choose a margin appropriate to weather, elevation, payload, speed, and the consequences of being stranded.
  4. Account for slow terrain. Deep sand, mud, snow, repeated climbs, and low-speed maneuvering can consume energy differently from steady highway driving. No universal penalty can be calculated from the specifications alone.
  5. Plan the return before entering the trail. If the nearest charger is beyond the trailhead in the opposite direction, include that distance and any elevation gain in the outbound plan.

Charging speed is relevant only when the connector and station can deliver it to the specific vehicle. A fast peak rate may taper as the battery fills, and cold or hot battery conditions can alter charging time. Treat the published charging claim as a planning input, not a guaranteed session duration.

Step-by-step method for comparing two electric SUVs

  1. Freeze the configurations. Select the same model year and market where possible. Write down trim, drivetrain, battery, wheels, and tires before collecting numbers.
  2. Enter clearance first. Use minimum ground clearance and note the measuring condition. Do not substitute a marketing description such as “rugged” or “adventure” for a dimension.
  3. Add all three angles. Approach, departure, and breakover answer different contact risks. If one angle is missing, keep it as “not stated.”
  4. Map the traction hardware and software. Record AWD architecture, wheel-slip controls, hill-descent behavior, and terrain modes exactly as described by the manufacturer.
  5. Verify the rolling stock. Check factory tire type and size for that trim. A wheel option can alter sidewall height and sometimes the published range.
  6. Check protection and accessories. Identify stated battery shielding and any equipment that could lower the effective clearance or departure angle.
  7. Enter range with its authority. Keep EPA, WLTP, and manufacturer maximums in separate labeled fields. Never convert one into another by guesswork.
  8. Overlay the route. List the trail’s steepest approach and departure, sharpest ridge, loose or wet sections, water crossings, payload, elevation change, and charger locations.
  9. Set a go/no-go rule. Reject a configuration when a known obstacle exceeds its geometry, when protection is inadequate for the surface, or when the energy plan leaves no realistic return margin.
  10. Seek representative testing. Use an independent evaluation on terrain similar to your route to validate the specification-screened shortlist. Manufacturer figures alone cannot establish a segment-wide winner.

How trail conditions change the answer

Rocky ledges and sharp ridges

Prioritize approach, departure, and breakover angles, then inspect the lowest underbody points. A steep obstacle may be impossible because of an angle even when the published clearance appears sufficient. Walk the line when safe, choose a tire path that avoids the highest point, and remember that a loaded vehicle sits lower than an unloaded specification vehicle.

Loose gravel and sand

Traction calibration, tire construction, and pressure management become more important. Use the terrain mode intended for the surface if the manufacturer provides one, but do not assume the mode replaces appropriate speed, momentum, or recovery planning. Soft surfaces can increase energy use and make a return-charge plan less forgiving.

Mud, deep snow, and water

Confirm the manufacturer’s limits for water depth and operating conditions before entering. A mud setting or deep-snow setting does not establish a safe wading depth, battery-sealing performance, or recovery point. Water, clay, and packed snow can also conceal rocks and ruts, making the published geometry harder to apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long-distance forest roads

These routes may be easy geometrically but difficult energetically. Compare charging distance, elevation, weather exposure, and the availability of a reliable return charger. A vehicle that clears every obstacle can still be unsuitable if the route leaves no dependable energy margin.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing model names instead of trims. The IONIQ 5’s 6.1-inch and 7-inch clearance figures demonstrate why the configuration belongs beside every number.
  • Using clearance as a complete off-road score. Angles, wheelbase, tires, traction controls, payload, and protection all affect contact and mobility.
  • Mixing rating systems. A manufacturer “up to” maximum and an EPA configuration value are not interchangeable.
  • Treating a terrain mode as a test result. Subaru’s X-MODE description establishes available settings, not comparative trail performance.
  • Ignoring accessories and payload. Hitches, steps, roof loads, passengers, and cargo can change effective geometry and energy consumption.
  • Assuming a published figure covers every market. Confirm region, model year, and the page’s scope; the Rivian page cited for R1S geometry also includes R2 information.
  • Inventing a universal range penalty. More clearance or a more aggressive tire may affect efficiency, but the available specifications do not quantify one penalty that applies to every SUV.
  • Ranking without representative testing. Different trails expose different weaknesses, so a specification table should create a shortlist, not declare an all-purpose winner.

How to make a defensible decision

Choose the SUV whose exact configuration clears the route’s limiting obstacle with a sensible margin, has traction controls suited to the surface, carries tires appropriate to the load and terrain, and can complete the complete itinerary with dependable charging access. If two vehicles meet those requirements, use range, charging convenience, payload, comfort, and service support as tie-breakers rather than awarding points for an isolated headline number.

For a public comparison, date every specification and identify its authority. State when a value is a manufacturer claim, when a page combines model years, and when independent trail evidence is unavailable. That transparent labeling is more useful than a single score that hides incompatible measurements.
