The best electric SUV cabin is the one that fits your passengers, controls, and cargo routine—not necessarily the one with the largest exterior or a single headline volume figure. Compare each seating row, try the controls while seated, and measure cargo in the configurations you will actually use. Manufacturer specifications can narrow your shortlist, but only an in-person inspection reveals cushion comfort, visibility, floor shape, lift-over height, and whether your bulky items pass through the opening.
Start with the way you will use the cabin
Before comparing models, write down who normally rides, how often all seats are occupied, and what you carry. A household with two adults and rear-facing child seats has different priorities from one that regularly carries six adults, bicycles, musical equipment, or a mobility device. Separate must-haves from preferences: a flat loading floor may matter more than maximum volume, while a passenger who drives long distances may value lumbar adjustment and quietness over a large screen.

Use the same questions for every vehicle. Ask whether each person can enter without ducking or twisting, whether the driver can reach routine controls without taking eyes from the road, and whether your largest item fits with the seats in their normal positions. This prevents a larger SUV from winning on exterior size while losing on usable second-row space or awkward cargo access.

Front seats
Check headroom, legroom, shoulder room, seat width, steering-wheel reach and pedal alignment from your normal driving position. A specification does not show whether a tall driver must move the seat so far rearward that a passenger behind loses knee room. Sit with the seatback at a comfortable angle, not in an artificially upright position used to maximize a brochure measurement.

- GROCERIES, SPORTING GOODS, TOOLS, SUPPLIES: large capacity 2.08 cubic feet organizer when fully extended measures 24 inches by 15 inches by 10 inches; multiple interior compartments and mesh exterior pockets for easy organization while saving valuable trunk space; a perfect choice for storing groceries, sporting equipment, tools, work supplies and more
Second-row adults
Have likely passengers sit behind the driver and front passenger after those seats are adjusted for real occupants. Check knee clearance, toe room under the front seats, shoulder room when three people sit abreast, and the height and angle of the cushion. A high floor can leave thighs unsupported even when legroom appears generous. Check the center position separately: a narrow cushion, raised floor tunnel or bulky console can make the nominal fifth seat useful only occasionally.
Third-row access and posture
For a three-row SUV, test the complete entry sequence. Fold or tilt the second-row seat, climb through the opening, and sit in the third row with the second row positioned for an actual passenger. Measure whether adults can place their feet, rest their knees and see out, rather than assuming that a third row is adult-sized. Check whether a child seat in the second row blocks the walk-in path and whether the second-row mechanism can be operated with one hand.
Published dimensions are clues, not rankings
| Vehicle and source description | Headroom | Legroom | Passenger-room or cargo context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Equinox EV (manufacturer press-page figures) | 39.15 inches front; 38.49 inches second row | 41.65 inches front; 38 inches second row | US-market figures for the vehicle described on the press page |
| 2026 Kia EV9 (Kia America specification) | Not stated in the cited specification | 42.8 inches second row | Up to 160.3 cubic feet of passenger room; tilting walk-in third-row entry is described |
| 2026 Kia Niro EV (Kia America specification) | Not stated in the cited specification | 36.9 inches rear | Compact electric crossover; compare with larger SUVs only with care |
These figures come from different manufacturer descriptions and are not an independent cross-model test. They also may vary by seating position, wheel, roof or trim. Treat them as a shortlist tool, then sit in the exact vehicle.

What to inspect
Spend several minutes in every seat you expect to use. Check cushion length under your thighs, pressure at your hips, lumbar support, side-bolster shape, head-restraint position and whether the seatback supports your shoulders. Move the seat through its adjustment range and confirm that the steering wheel still aligns with your arms. Rear passengers should check cushion angle, foot placement, recline and whether the door armrest is at a natural height.
Climate and premium functions
Record which functions are standard, optional or unavailable on the exact model year and trim. Heated, ventilated or massaging seats can make a long commute more pleasant, but a feature listed as “available” may require a package or higher grade. For example, Volvo describes EX90 front seats with power adjustment, lumbar support and cushion extensions; heated seats are standard, while ventilation and ten-point massage can be added. Volvo also describes an optional active chassis with air suspension. Kia describes heated and ventilated lounge seats available in the EV9’s first and second rows. Verify the window sticker rather than assuming every example has them.

Evaluate ride comfort on broken pavement and over expansion joints as well as smooth roads. A well-shaped seat cannot compensate for harsh vertical motion, and soft suspension does not help if the cushion causes numbness. Include highway driving when comparing electric SUVs because tire and wind noise become more apparent at speed.
Test controls and displays from the driver’s seat
Run ordinary tasks
With the vehicle stationary, set the temperature, change the fan speed, adjust mirrors, turn on the defroster, select audio, operate the wipers and change a driver-assistance setting. Notice whether each task uses a physical switch, a steering-wheel control, a dedicated screen area or a menu. Count the steps and look for controls that are hidden below the screen or behind a secondary page. Then repeat a few tasks during a short, familiar drive; a system that seems simple while parked may demand too much visual attention in traffic.

Screen dependence is an ergonomic choice
Look for clear, persistent readouts of speed, range, warnings and navigation directions. Check whether glare washes out the display and whether the screen sits where your hand naturally lands. Rear passengers may need their own charging points or climate controls, so inspect the second and third rows as well as the front.
An Edmunds comparison distributed by the Associated Press found both the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2026 Tesla Model Y spacious and comfortable, but judged the Ioniq 5 controls easier to use and learn. The review said the Model Y touchscreen controls almost everything and could be distracting while driving. That conclusion applies to the model years and versions in that comparison, not to every electric SUV or every driver.
Kia describes high-speed USB charging ports accessible from all three EV9 rows and available concealable storage, including an extendable second-row center console. If passengers routinely carry tablets or phones, locate those ports and try reaching the storage with a seat occupied.

Answer the family-use questions directly
Is the back seat comfortable for adults?
Only a seat test can answer for your passengers. Use the front seats at their normal positions, then check rear cushion support, knee angle, head clearance, air vents, charging access and the ability to see out. Ask a taller passenger to sit on each side and in the center. A generous published legroom number does not reveal seat firmness, roof taper or whether feet fit beneath the front seat.
Does the electric SUV have enough room for a family?
Match the cabin to the family’s stages. Bring the child seats you actually use and install them with the vehicle’s lower anchors and top tethers. Check clearance for rotating seats, the ability to buckle neighboring passengers, and whether the front passenger can retain a comfortable position. Open every door with a child seat installed, and test loading from a parking space where doors cannot open fully. For a three-row model, confirm that the third-row access path remains usable with the second-row seats occupied.
Are the controls easy to use?
Ease depends on frequency and consequence. A menu for a rarely changed setting may be acceptable; burying climate, demisting or mirror controls is more consequential. Score each vehicle on reach, labeling, number of steps, feedback and whether the driver must look away from the road. Have another household member repeat the test without coaching to expose a learning curve.
Compare cargo space as a set of usable configurations
Read the number’s location and seat position
Ask whether a quoted volume is behind the third row, behind the second row or measured with all rear backrests folded. Manufacturers can use different measurement methods, so figures from separate brands are not perfectly interchangeable. Record the configuration beside every number.
| Vehicle | Seats-up or folded configuration | Published capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Kia EV9 | Behind third row | 20.2 cubic feet |
| 2026 Kia EV9 | Behind second row | 43.5 cubic feet |
| 2026 Kia EV9 | Behind first row | 81.7 cubic feet |
| 2026 Volvo EX90 | Rear backrests folded | Up to 85.3 cubic feet, plus a 2.5-cubic-foot underfloor area |
| Chevrolet Equinox EV | Behind second row | 26.4 cubic feet |
| Chevrolet Equinox EV | Behind front seats | 57.2 cubic feet |
| 2026 Kia Niro EV | Rear seats folded | 63.7 cubic feet |
The Niro EV is described as a compact crossover, so its folded-seat figure should not be treated as a direct substitute for a three-row SUV’s capacity. Likewise, the EV9’s behind-third-row figure answers a different question from the EX90’s maximum.

Inspect the opening and floor
Measure the liftgate opening width and height, not only the floor length. Check lift-over height, bumper clearance, the slope of the loading lip, wheel-arch intrusion and whether the floor can be lowered or leveled. Fold the rear seats yourself and see whether the resulting surface is flat enough for your stroller, boxes, dog crate, sports gear or mobility device. Try loading the largest object through the opening with the hatch fully raised.
Look for hidden and front storage
Lift the cargo floor and inspect underfloor bins, the location of charging equipment and whether the space remains available with a spare tire or repair kit. Open the frunk and test its shape with the items you would place there; a deep but narrow compartment may be less useful than a shallow, square one. The EX90 description includes a power-folding third row, cupholders in each row and a front load compartment. Confirm those features on the vehicle and market you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Assess noise, visibility and materials on a real drive
Noise
Drive on coarse pavement, smooth asphalt and a highway. Listen separately for tire roar, wind around mirrors and roof rails, suspension thumps and motor sounds. Kia says available sound-insulating glass and related technologies can reduce EV9 highway noise to 58.2 decibels. That is a manufacturer-stated available-feature claim, not an independent measurement and not a value to apply to another model.
Visibility and camera support
Check the view over the hood, through the rear glass and over each shoulder. Adjust the mirrors from your normal position, look for blind spots created by pillars, and test the rear camera in daylight and low light. Confirm that camera views remain available while maneuvering with a trailer or a loaded rear compartment if those tasks matter to you.

Materials, glare and atmosphere
Touch the frequently used surfaces, inspect stitching and check whether hard trim contacts knees or elbows. Look for reflections on the instrument panel and central screen, especially with the roof shade open. A panoramic roof can make a cabin feel open while a low roofline or thick pillars still restrict headroom and outward sight lines. Treat manufacturer language about atmosphere or insulation as a reason to inspect, not proof of a particular experience.

Verify model year, trim and market equipment
Electric SUVs can change screens, seats, charging ports, suspension and storage between model years. A feature shown in a review may be optional, limited to a package or unavailable in your country. Before comparing prices, obtain the exact window sticker or build sheet and mark each item as standard, optional, included in a package or absent. Confirm seat count and wheel-and-tire choice because they can alter room, ride and cargo arrangements.
- Check the vehicle identification number or exact model-year designation.
- Confirm the market and drivetrain; US specifications do not automatically describe vehicles sold elsewhere.
- Match the trim in the showroom to the trim you can order.
- Ask whether a demonstration vehicle has accessories or software enabled that are not included in the advertised configuration.
- Repeat the cargo and child-seat test after selecting the final equipment.
Use a repeatable comparison scorecard
Give each shortlisted SUV a separate score for the following axes instead of combining everything into one impression:
| Axis | Questions to score |
|---|---|
| Passenger fit | Can every intended occupant sit comfortably in each row? Is entry easy, and is the third row genuinely usable? |
| Seat and ride comfort | Do cushions, lumbar adjustment, climate functions, suspension and noise suit long trips? |
| Usability | Are information and frequent controls visible, reachable and learnable without excessive screen navigation? |
| Family utility | Do doors, child-seat anchors, rear charging points and passenger storage work with real occupants aboard? |
| Cargo utility | Does the required volume fit your items, and are the opening, floor, bins, frunk and folding mechanism convenient? |
| Ownership constraints | Are the desired features standard on the exact year, trim and market, and can you verify them on the window sticker? |
Weight the rows according to your life. If three adults ride in back every day, second-row comfort should outrank a maximum seats-folded figure. If you carry equipment weekly, opening dimensions and folding operation deserve more weight than a small difference in quoted cubic feet.

The Edmunds/AP comparison of the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2026 Tesla Model Y illustrates why a universal winner is misleading. It reported spacious, comfortable cabins in both, easier-to-use controls in the Ioniq 5 and an advantage to the Model Y for cargo volume. The overall comparison was described as a draw because those strengths serve different preferences. Use the same discipline with any pair: keep comfort, controls and cargo as separate findings, then choose according to the tasks you perform most often.
Take this inspection checklist to the showroom
- Set the driver’s seat, steering wheel and mirrors for the primary driver.
- Place each regular passenger in the second row and check knee, head, shoulder and thigh support.
- Install the real child seat or booster, connect the tether and test neighboring seating.
- For a three-row SUV, operate the walk-in mechanism and sit in the third row with the second row in use.
- Perform climate, mirror, defrost, wiper, audio and driver-assistance tasks from the driver’s seat.
- Check front and rear charging ports, cupholders and storage with passengers seated.
- Open the liftgate, measure the opening and load the largest item you routinely carry.
- Fold every relevant seat and inspect the resulting floor, underfloor bin and frunk.
- Drive city streets, rough pavement and highway speeds while listening for tire and wind noise.
- Review the exact window sticker and record which comfort and technology features are standard or optional.
That process will not identify a single best electric SUV for everyone. It will show which cabin works for your body, passengers, controls and belongings—and expose compromises that a brochure cannot.
