Exterior length, width and height tell you whether an electric car will fit a garage or parking space. They do not tell you whether adults will be comfortable in either row or whether your stroller, bike, pet crate or luggage will pass through the cargo opening. A reliable comparison combines row-by-row passenger dimensions, clearly labeled cargo volumes, loading geometry and a test-fit of the people and items you actually carry.
Why exterior dimensions are only a starting point
Two electric cars with similar outside measurements can package their batteries, motors, suspension and crash structure very differently. One may provide more usable rear legroom; another may have a taller cargo opening or a lower load floor. Conversely, a vehicle that looks larger outside may devote more of its length to hood, crash structure or battery packaging rather than to the passenger compartment.

Exterior dimensions remain important for driveway, garage and street-parking decisions. Treat them as an envelope check, not as a prediction of interior usefulness. No supported cross-model statistic establishes a percentage relationship between exterior size and usable cabin or cargo space, so a claimed “space per inch” ranking would be misleading.

- Exterior length, width and height: check parking, garage clearance, mirrors and turning space.
- Passenger dimensions: evaluate where people sit and how much room each row has.
- Passenger volume: a calculated interior-space index, not a direct comfort score.
- Cargo volume: storage capacity that must be read with its seat-position and measurement-method label.
- Opening and floor geometry: determines whether a particular object can actually be loaded.
Passenger volume and cargo volume answer different questions
Passenger volume and cargo volume are not interchangeable. A passenger-volume figure describes calculated space associated with the seating areas. A cargo figure describes storage in a stated seating configuration, such as behind the second row or with those seats folded.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s interior-volume rule defines an interior volume index for passenger automobiles. It adds calculated front- and rear-seat volumes, where applicable, to luggage capacity. For certain station wagons and hatchbacks, the calculation uses a cargo-volume index. The rule specifies measurement conditions and dimensions to the nearest 0.1 inch. This is a standardized index, not a promise that every occupant will experience the same comfort.
The seat-volume calculations use effective headroom, a shoulder/hip-room measure and effective legroom. Those inputs make the result a composite geometric measure. They do not fully capture seat-cushion shape, the range of seat adjustment, foot-space contours, center-console intrusion, visibility or how a particular body feels after an hour in the car.
| Figure or dimension | What it helps you assess | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Front headroom | Clearance above the driver or front passenger | Seat comfort, helmet clearance or the effect of a sunroof and seat height |
| Rear headroom | Vertical space for second-row occupants | Whether a tall passenger can sit upright with the front seat reclined |
| Front and rear legroom | Available longitudinal space at the stated seat positions | Actual knee, shin and foot clearance for your seating posture |
| Shoulder room | Side-to-side room at shoulder level | Whether three people, child seats or door armrests will fit comfortably |
| Hip room | Seat-level width | Usable width after cushions, buckles and bolsters are occupied |
| EPA passenger volume | A standardized composite interior-volume index | A guarantee of comfort for a particular passenger mix |
| Cargo behind second row | Everyday storage while rear passengers remain seated | Maximum capacity with the second row folded |
| Cargo behind front seats | Maximum or near-maximum storage with rear seats folded | Space available while all passenger seats are occupied |
How cargo-volume measurements are made
Closed compartments
SAE J1100 treats a closed compartment, such as a conventional sedan trunk, by physically stacking simulated luggage pieces. The resulting count or index reflects how many standard pieces can be arranged in the compartment under the method’s rules. The shape and opening of the trunk still matter to a buyer because a real object may not match the simulated pieces.

In a hatchback, wagon or similar open area connected to the passenger compartment, volume is estimated from representative length, width and height. This is harder to quantify because the same open space can carry people or cargo. A large published number may therefore include an area that is only available after seats are moved or folded.
Neil E. Mitchell and David Dolenga of General Motors Company explained the purpose of the methodology in their 2011 SAE paper, Interpretation of SAE J1100 Cargo Volume Indices: “This will result in a more accurate and uniform reporting of cargo volumes determined by these methods.” The sentence describes the authors’ standards work; it is not an independent test of any current electric vehicle.

SAE J1100 was first published in September 1973, according to SAE’s 2011 standards-history discussion. That date explains the lineage of the method, not the capacity of a modern EV.
Always identify the seat configuration
A cargo number is incomplete without its seat-position label. “Behind the second row” means the rear seats remain in their normal seating position. “Behind the front seats” generally means the second row is folded or removed from the usable cargo area. These figures describe different uses and must not be combined into one implied total.
| Label to record | Typical use | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Behind second-row seat | Shopping, carry-on bags, groceries, a stroller with rear passengers aboard | What can I carry without giving up the rear seats? |
| Behind front seats | Large furniture, bicycles or equipment when the second row is folded | What is the largest available loading area? |
| Seats folded, seatbacks up or down as specified | Model-specific maximum-cargo configuration | Does the published maximum require a particular folding arrangement? |
Do not describe maximum folded-seat capacity as everyday cargo space when passengers still need those seats. Keep the two use cases separate in your notes and in any comparison table.
A worked example: reading an EV specification sheet
Chevrolet Canada’s announcement for the 2024 Equinox EV illustrates the layout to look for. It lists front- and second-row headroom, legroom, shoulder room and hip room, then separately reports EPA passenger volume and cargo volume by seat configuration.
| Specification | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| EPA passenger volume | 102.24 cubic feet | Canadian-market 2024 Equinox EV specification in an announcement first published September 8, 2022; the page carries a May 2024 editors’ note. |
| Cargo behind second-row seat | 26.4 cubic feet | Rear seating remains available; this is the relevant figure for normal passenger-and-luggage use. |
| Cargo behind front seats | 57.2 cubic feet | Represents a different seating configuration from the 26.4-cubic-foot figure. |
These numbers show why the labels matter: passenger volume is not a luggage measurement, and the two cargo figures do not describe the same cabin state. The page is an automaker-published Canadian-market example, not a controlled comparison against other EVs. For a purchase decision, verify the current official specifications for the exact model year, trim and market; a sunroof, seat design or equipment package can alter a vehicle’s dimensions.

Step-by-step method for comparing electric-car space
1. Define the real use case
Write down how many people normally ride, which row each person uses and the largest or most awkward items that must travel with them. Include combinations rather than isolated objects: two adults plus a rear-facing child seat and stroller, five passengers plus weekend luggage, or a dog crate behind the second row.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Count regular occupants in each row.
- Note the tallest passenger and the driver’s preferred seat position.
- Measure the longest, widest and tallest item, including wheels, handles and hinges.
- Mark whether the item must fit while every passenger seat is occupied.
2. Compare the seating rows separately
Record front and rear headroom, legroom, shoulder room and hip room in separate columns. Do not replace a missing row measurement with the vehicle’s total passenger volume. Check that every figure applies to the same body style, trim, model year and market.
When comparing rear seating, consider the front seat position used by the intended driver. A published rear-legroom number measured with a standardized front-seat reference does not guarantee that a tall driver and tall rear passenger will both be comfortable.
3. Capture passenger volume without treating it as a comfort score
Record whether the source calls the figure EPA passenger volume, an automaker’s passenger volume or another index. Note the edition or market. Use it as a broad way to compare similarly reported vehicles, then return to row-specific dimensions and an in-person check for comfort.
4. Record cargo with seats up and seats folded
Enter at least two separate values: cargo behind the second row and maximum cargo behind the front seats. If a source gives only one number, write “not stated” for the missing configuration rather than inferring it. Keep the source’s terminology because EPA, SAE and manufacturer figures may use different methods or included areas.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
5. Examine the geometry hidden by the volume total
Look for these dimensions in the official specification sheet or measure them yourself:
- Cargo-floor length with the second row upright.
- Maximum length with the second row folded.
- Width between the wheel housings, not just the widest point of the sidewalls.
- Liftgate or hatch opening width and height.
- Load-floor height, sill height and the vertical step into the compartment.
- Whether the folded seatbacks make a flat surface, a slope or an interrupted ridge.
- Under-floor storage, seat-belt anchors, cargo covers and other intrusions.
EPA’s rule itself identifies cargo dimensions such as floor length and seatback-to-load-floor height. That is a useful reminder that a single cubic-foot figure cannot describe every loading task.
6. Test the people and the actual item
- Set the driver’s seat for the person who normally drives.
- Seat the tallest regular passenger in the relevant row.
- Check head clearance, knee clearance, foot placement, shoulder contact and entry or exit.
- Bring the real stroller, crate, instrument case or sports equipment when possible.
- If the item cannot be brought, measure its maximum dimensions and compare them with the opening first, then the floor and interior width.
- Try the required seat-folding sequence and confirm that doors, liftgates and seat belts still operate as needed.
This hands-on check is practical buyer guidance, not a replacement for the standardized method used to publish official capacity.
7. Preserve the assumptions
Keep model year, country or market, trim, body style, seat position, seats-up or seats-down state and measurement source next to every number. Never merge a rear-seat dimension from one trim with a cargo figure from another and then present the result as a single ranking.
How to evaluate a stroller, bike, pet crate or box
Stroller
Measure the folded stroller’s longest dimension and the widest point, including wheels. Compare those measurements with the hatch opening before checking floor length. A stroller may fit inside the volume yet fail at the narrowest part of the opening or at the lift-over height.

Bike
Decide whether the bike must fit with both wheels installed. Measure handlebar width and total length, then check the opening diagonal and the folded-seat floor. A maximum behind-front-seats figure is relevant only if you are willing to give up the second-row seating for that trip.
Pet crate
Use the crate’s exterior dimensions, not the pet’s body length alone. Check roof clearance, door orientation, tie-down points and whether the crate blocks the driver’s rearward view. A wide but shallow cargo area may work better than a taller compartment with a narrow opening.
Boxes and luggage
Measure the largest box or suitcase and identify which face must pass through the opening. Check the wheel-housing width and the distance from the opening to the seatbacks. Several small bags can use irregular corners more efficiently than one rigid carton, so test the actual packing pattern when capacity is close.

Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Ranking cars by exterior length | Outside length includes non-cabin structure and does not reveal seat or cargo geometry. | Use exterior figures only for parking and fit, then compare row dimensions and cargo access. |
| Using passenger volume as luggage space | Passenger volume is a calculated seating-space index. | Use the labeled cargo figure for the required seat configuration. |
| Comparing maximum cargo with seats folded to everyday space | The second row is unavailable in the maximum configuration. | Compare behind-second-row figures when passengers remain seated. |
| Combining figures from different trims or markets | Equipment and specifications can vary by configuration. | Keep model year, market and trim attached to each value. |
| Ignoring the opening | A volume estimate cannot show whether a rigid item can pass through the hatch. | Measure opening width, height, sill and the item’s largest dimension. |
| Assuming folded seats create a flat floor | Seatbacks may slope or leave a step. | Inspect the folded surface with the item in place. |
| Inventing a missing number | Different methods and configurations are not safely interchangeable. | Record “not stated” and leave the comparison qualified. |
A practical comparison worksheet
Use one row per vehicle and retain the source date. A flexible tape measure is useful for checking your item or a cargo opening; it does not reproduce the EPA or SAE method.
| Category | Vehicle A | Vehicle B | Notes to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market, model year and trim | Do not mix regional or trim-specific data. | ||
| Front headroom / legroom / shoulder room / hip room | Record units and stated seat conditions. | ||
| Rear headroom / legroom / shoulder room / hip room | Check the front-seat reference position. | ||
| Passenger-volume label and figure | EPA or manufacturer index; not a comfort guarantee. | ||
| Cargo behind second row | Everyday passenger-and-cargo configuration. | ||
| Cargo behind front seats | Maximum-style configuration; second row not available. | ||
| Opening width and height | Compare with the item’s largest dimensions. | ||
| Floor length and width between wheel housings | Measure with seats in the required position. | ||
| Load-floor and sill height | Important for heavy or wheeled objects. | ||
| Folded-seat surface | Flat, sloped or interrupted. | ||
| Physical test result | Record who sat where and which item was tested. |
Making a final decision
Choose the car that satisfies the most demanding combination you actually use, not the one with the largest isolated headline number. For a family, that may mean adequate rear legroom with a child seat installed and enough cargo behind the second row for a stroller. For an outdoor user, opening dimensions and a flat folded floor may matter more than passenger volume. For frequent long trips, the tallest passenger’s comfort and the driver’s preferred seat position should carry more weight than maximum cargo with the rear seats folded.
When two vehicles appear close on paper, give priority to the measurement that can create a hard failure: an opening too narrow for the item, insufficient rear legroom for a regular passenger, or a sill too high to load safely. A few extra cubic feet cannot compensate for an object that cannot pass through the hatch or a passenger who cannot sit comfortably.
