What an electric-car battery warranty actually covers
An EV battery warranty is usually several promises in one document. Separating them prevents a common mistake: assuming that every electric-drive part, and every loss of driving range, has the same protection.

The high-voltage traction battery consists of cells, modules and the pack enclosure. The warranty may cover defects in materials or workmanship, such as a failed module, damaged internal connection or manufacturing fault. It may also cover capacity degradation, but only if the measured capacity falls below a stated threshold. Those are different types of coverage.

Other electric-drive components
An “EV system” or “powertrain” warranty can include the motor, inverter, electric power control unit, onboard charger, charging hardware or related electronics. The duration and remedy for those parts may differ from the high-voltage battery’s capacity promise. List each component separately rather than treating an EV-system label as a battery guarantee.
What is not automatically covered
Normal capacity loss may be excluded unless the battery falls below the written floor. Physical damage from a crash, flood or improper repair is commonly excluded. A dashboard range estimate is not necessarily the warranty test: Tesla warns that estimated range is an imperfect measure of battery capacity, while its warranty and Ford materials describe manufacturer-controlled testing.
Build a side-by-side comparison using the same eight questions
Use one worksheet for every vehicle you are considering. Fill in the exact wording from the applicable warranty booklet, not a salesperson’s shorthand.

- How long and how far? Write the years, miles or kilometres, and whether coverage ends when either limit is reached.
- When does the clock start? Confirm whether the start date is delivery, first registration, first service or another event.
- Which parts are covered? Separate the battery pack and modules from the motor, inverter, control unit, charger and other components.
- Is degradation covered? Identify separate defect coverage and capacity-loss coverage.
- What is the capacity floor? Record the percentage, baseline capacity, test method, authorized tester and documentation requirements.
- What remedy is promised? Check whether the manufacturer may repair modules, recondition the pack, or install a new, refurbished or remanufactured battery, and what capacity the result must achieve.
- What can void or limit coverage? Note collision, flood, unauthorized battery opening, misuse, commercial use, taxi use, charging practices and maintenance requirements.
- What happens to a second owner? Verify transfer rules, remaining term and the claim route by VIN.
Do not award a vehicle the “better” warranty from years alone. A shorter warranty with a clear capacity test and practical remedy can be more valuable than a longer document that leaves those points uncertain.
Time and mileage: read both limits together
Most battery warranties use a time limit and a distance limit. “Eight years or 100,000 miles” means protection ends when the first limit is reached, not when both have elapsed. A high-mileage driver can therefore exhaust coverage years before an infrequent driver.

Record the warranty start date and calculate the earlier expiry date. For a used car, subtract the vehicle’s in-service date and mileage from both limits. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to confirm the result for the VIN; a registration date in a listing may not be the warranty start date.
Compare like with like. A performance trim, larger battery or different model year can have a different mileage limit even within the same model family. Promotional language may describe the current model while your used vehicle is covered by an earlier booklet.
Capacity guarantees: the number matters only with the test
Defect coverage versus degradation coverage
A defect warranty addresses failure caused by materials or workmanship. Capacity coverage addresses a battery that still operates but stores less energy than it did when new. A warranty can provide one without the other, so find both clauses.
Capacity floor and baseline
The floor is usually expressed as a percentage of original or usable capacity. Ask what “original” means: the certified pack rating, the usable energy available to the driver, or another manufacturer baseline. The document should identify the diagnostic procedure and the party authorized to perform it.
Who measures and how
Manufacturers may require an authorized service center to run a diagnostic, control the test conditions and interpret the result. Tesla’s U.S. warranty materials state that Tesla controls the measurement method and its decision to repair, replace or provide reconditioned or remanufactured parts. Ford’s cited owner-manual material likewise says an authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer determines capacity and that Ford controls the measurement method. A range figure shown on the instrument panel is not a substitute for that test.

Before purchase, ask the seller for any battery-health report and ask the authorized service center what diagnostic is required to open a capacity claim. A third-party scan can help you evaluate a car, but it does not bind the manufacturer unless the warranty says it does.
Remedies: a warranty repair may not mean a new battery
Read the remedy clause as carefully as the threshold. The manufacturer may be allowed to replace one or more modules, recondition the existing pack, or install a new, factory-refurbished or remanufactured unit. The obligation may be to restore the battery to the stated minimum capacity, not to return it to 100% of its original capacity.
Tesla’s U.S. New Vehicle Limited Warranty gives Tesla discretion over measurement and whether to repair, replace or provide reconditioned or remanufactured parts. Ford’s cited manual also allows new, factory-remanufactured or factory-refurbished components. Kia’s UK warranty wording illustrates the practical implication: a repair or replacement may restore at least the stated capacity percentage without returning the battery to new condition or 100% of original capacity. That page is UK-specific; do not apply its exact terms to a U.S. Kia.
Ask the service department three questions before signing: Will the remedy be a module repair or a complete pack? What minimum capacity must the repaired vehicle achieve? Will the replacement part be new, refurbished or remanufactured, and what warranty will cover that part?

Keep service invoices, diagnostic reports and records of warning messages. If a claim is denied, request the written reason and the clause relied on. Do not authorize an independent shop to open the pack while a warranty claim is pending unless the manufacturer confirms that it will not affect coverage.
Current U.S. examples (not a ranking)
These examples show why the same comparison axes are necessary. They are manufacturer-published terms, not independent reliability statistics, and exact model-year and trim rules control.
| Manufacturer and source | Published duration | Capacity language | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla U.S. vehicle warranty page | Battery and drive-unit terms are model-specific; the page lists eight years with mileage varying by model or trim. | Minimum 70% capacity retention for the listed models. | Check the configuration. The page says the balance of the original battery and drive-unit warranty continues for Tesla-certified pre-owned vehicles, and that the New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers after an ownership transfer through Tesla. |
| Tesla U.S. New Vehicle Limited Warranty document | Model S/X: eight years or 150,000 miles. Model 3/Y Standard or Standard Range Plus: eight years or 100,000 miles. Model 3/Y Long Range or Performance: eight years or 120,000 miles. | Each listed example includes at least 70% retention. | Terms are model-year document examples. Tesla controls measurement and may repair, replace or use reconditioned or remanufactured parts. Exclusions include certain damage, flooding and battery opening or servicing by non-Tesla or non-certified personnel. |
| Kia America U.S. EV System Warranty | Ten years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the EV System Warranty. | Battery capacity below 70% of original capacity is covered during that period; repair or replacement restores at least 70%. | The EV-system description includes the electric motor, high-voltage battery, electric power control unit and onboard charger. Verify the exact booklet and exclusions. |
| Hyundai Motor America U.S. warranty information | Ten years or 100,000 miles for hybrid and electric batteries. | The overview discusses battery coverage but does not state every test detail on that page. | Hyundai lists the duration for original and subsequent owners and directs readers to the owner’s manual or warranty sections for the controlling details. |
| Ford owner-manual material | Not stated in the cited passage. | Below 70% is treated as excessive for the covered case; below 65% applies to certain cutaway or chassis-cab configurations. | An authorized EV Certified Ford Dealer determines capacity. Ford controls measurement and the repair or replacement decision and may use new, factory-remanufactured or factory-refurbished components. The URL presents a particular configuration and market setting, so check the VIN-specific U.S. booklet. |
These figures cannot predict which battery will last longest. No independent reliability statistic establishes that conclusion from the warranty limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a new or used vehicle before buying
- Identify the exact vehicle. Write down the VIN, model year, trim, battery size, in-service date and current odometer reading.
- Obtain the controlling document. Download or request the warranty booklet for that VIN and market. Do not rely on a generic page for a different country or model year.
- Complete the worksheet. Enter time, mileage, start date, covered components, capacity floor, test procedure, exclusions and remedy wording.
- Confirm remaining coverage. Ask an authorized dealer or the manufacturer to verify expiration dates, prior claims, salvage or branded-title issues and any transfer requirement.
- Request battery evidence. Obtain service records, warning-message history and any authorized capacity diagnostic. Treat an informal range estimate as information, not a warranty determination.
- Check transfer mechanics. Find out whether coverage transfers automatically, requires an ownership update or changes for later owners. Confirm whether a dealer’s used-car warranty is separate from manufacturer coverage.
- Price the risk. If the vehicle is near the time or mileage limit, value it as though a future capacity repair could be your responsibility. Ask for the manufacturer’s written claim and dispute procedure.
How to file a battery-capacity claim
- Contact the authorized service location listed for the vehicle and describe the symptom precisely: reduced usable range, a battery warning, charging interruption or another documented issue.
- Request the required diagnostic and ask which conditions, state of charge, software version or records are needed before testing.
- Keep the repair order showing the measured result, the applicable threshold and the technician’s conclusion.
- If the result is below the written floor, ask the service adviser to identify the proposed remedy and the capacity it must restore.
- If the claim is denied, request the reason in writing, the test data and the escalation or dispute route in the warranty booklet.
Do not promise yourself a complete new pack. The written remedy may be a module repair or refurbished component that meets the minimum capacity requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Assuming the warranty follows the car
Some warranties transfer automatically; others require an ownership update or have special rules for certified used vehicles. Confirm by VIN before paying a deposit. A dealer’s extended or used-car contract is not the same as the manufacturer’s battery warranty.

Confusing a battery warranty with a full powertrain warranty
An electric motor, inverter or onboard charger can have different coverage from the pack’s capacity clause. A failed charger does not prove that the battery is covered for degradation, and a capacity claim does not automatically cover every EV-system component.
Using the dashboard range as proof
Range varies with temperature, speed, tires, terrain, climate control and driving history. Because manufacturers may require a controlled diagnostic, range alone cannot establish that a battery has crossed the warranty threshold.
Ignoring title and modification history
Flood, collision and salvage repairs can trigger exclusions or make the manufacturer require additional inspection. Ask for the vehicle history, battery repair invoices and evidence that all high-voltage work was performed by an authorized or certified facility.
A practical decision rule
Prefer the vehicle whose warranty gives you the clearest answer on all eight comparison axes, not merely the largest year or mileage figure. A strong comparison has a stated capacity floor, a defined authorized test, an understandable remedy, realistic transfer rules and exclusions you can verify. If any of those fields is “not stated,” treat the uncertainty as a purchasing risk and obtain written clarification before committing.
For a new car, save the warranty booklet and delivery paperwork. For a used car, obtain the VIN-specific coverage confirmation and diagnostic history. Market, model-year and battery-configuration differences mean the vehicle’s own warranty document remains the controlling reference.
