The cheapest-looking commercial vehicle loan is not necessarily the cheapest loan. Compare written offers using the same vehicle price, deposit, amount financed and term, then examine the finance structure, fixed or variable rate, every upfront and ongoing fee, repayment frequency, scheduled payment, balloon or residual, total amount payable and early-exit conditions.
Australian lender pricing is tailored to the borrower, vehicle and agreement, so an advertised rate is only a starting point. Ask each lender for a personalised quote and make the quotes show identical assumptions before you decide.

What a comparable commercial vehicle quote must show
A quote is comparable only when you know exactly what is being financed and how repayment is calculated. Commonwealth Bank’s business-finance guidance says a quote should identify the finance agreement type, vehicle cost, fees, term, interest rate, repayments and any balloon or residual payment. Use that as the minimum information set, then add the items that affect flexibility and risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Quote item | What to record | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and amount financed | Cash price, deposit, trade-in credit and final amount borrowed | Two rates are not comparable if one quote finances a larger amount or folds different costs into the loan. |
| Finance structure | For example, a secured business vehicle loan, chattel-style arrangement or another agreement named by the lender | The agreement determines ownership, security, documentation and payout rules. |
| Interest rate | Quoted percentage, whether fixed or variable, and the period to which it applies | A headline rate without its type and period does not tell you how payments can change. |
| Fees | Establishment or documentation fee, account or maintenance fee, discharge fee and any other listed charge; note when each is payable | A lower rate can be offset by a larger upfront or recurring fee. |
| Term and payment frequency | Number of years, and whether payments are monthly, fortnightly or another frequency | Changing the number or timing of payments changes cash flow and total interest. |
| Scheduled repayment | Amount and number of regular payments under the quoted assumptions | The payment must fit the business’s cash cycle, not just appear low on a monthly comparison. |
| Balloon or residual | Amount, percentage if supplied, and exact due date | A low regular payment can hide a substantial final obligation. |
| Total amount payable | Total of all scheduled payments, the balloon and fees over the full term | This is the clearest like-for-like cost measure when structures differ. |
| Exit and security terms | Early-payout calculation, extra-payment rules, security over the vehicle and any personal guarantee | These terms affect your ability to sell, refinance or repay early. |
Step-by-step method for comparing offers
- Freeze the assumptions. Give every lender the same vehicle identification, cash price, deposit, trade-in amount, requested loan amount and intended term. If one quote includes an accessory, registration cost or fee that another excludes, label the difference rather than treating the quotes as equivalents.
- Request the complete written quote. Ask for the agreement type, rate, rate type, repayment frequency, regular payment, all fees, balloon or residual and total amount payable. CommBank says borrowers should be able to see the total cost over the term; insist that this figure is supplied on the same assumptions for every offer.
- Separate cash price from financed amount. Record what you pay upfront and what is added to the loan. A documentation or establishment fee paid in cash has a different interest effect from the same fee financed over the term.
- Classify the rate. Mark each quote fixed or variable and write down the period covered by the quoted rate. Ask what can cause a variable rate or repayment to change and whether the quote is indicative or subject to final credit approval.
- List fees by timing. Put one-off charges, recurring account charges and end-of-loan or discharge charges in separate rows. Record whether each fee is paid upfront, added to the balance or deducted from the advance.
- Compare two repayment structures. Where available, request one quote with no balloon and one with a balloon. Keep the vehicle, amount financed, rate and term constant so the change in regular payment and total cost is visible.
- Calculate the full obligation. Add every regular payment, the balloon and all fees. Do not compare only the periodic payment or only the interest rate.
- Test the exit. Ask for the amount payable if you sell the vehicle or repay the loan early at several points in the term. Confirm whether extra payments are allowed and whether an early-repayment charge applies.
- Check suitability and approval conditions. Confirm the vehicle’s age and useful-life requirements, business eligibility, security, guarantees and any conditions that could change the final price.
Why two lenders quote different rates
Commercial vehicle pricing is not a universal market tariff. Lenders describe the rate and repayment as depending on borrower circumstances, the asset and the agreement. Factors identified in Australian lender material include:

| Factor | How it can affect the quote | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Business and credit assessment | The lender may tailor pricing and require normal credit approval rather than applying an advertised rate to every applicant. | Is this an indicative rate, and what could change after full assessment? |
| Vehicle type | Different commercial vehicles can have different risk, resale and usage characteristics. | Does the quoted rate apply to this exact vehicle category? |
| Vehicle age | Older assets may have different eligibility, term or useful-life limits. | What is the maximum vehicle age at approval and at the end of the term? |
| Useful life | The agreement may need to end within the lender’s view of the vehicle’s useful life. | How does useful life limit the term or balloon? |
| Finance option and structure | Agreement type, security and residual design can alter pricing and repayment calculations. | What alternative structures can you quote on identical assumptions? |
| Term | A different term changes the number of payments and may change the rate offered. | What are the total payable and regular payment at each practical term? |
ANZ describes business vehicle pricing as tailored and subject to normal credit approval. Westpac likewise identifies vehicle type, age, useful life and agreement terms as rate factors. Treat those statements as product-specific guidance, not a promise that every lender uses the same formula.
One dated example illustrates why rate ranges must not be presented as market averages: Great Southern Bank displayed a Business+ Vehicle Loan range of 6.79% p.a. to 17.49% p.a., stated as current on 15 May 2026 and subject to change. That range is neither a guaranteed offer nor a current October 2026 benchmark for every business. Obtain a fresh quote for your business and vehicle.
Fees: identify the amount and when it is paid
Fees can be easy to miss when a lender advertises a rate. Put each charge in the comparison sheet and show whether it is paid from your cash, added to the loan or charged during the term.
| Example from lender material | What is established | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| National Australia Bank | A $600 one-off setup fee is listed on its business vehicle/equipment loan page, retrieved 13 October 2026. | Use it as that product’s stated fee, not as a standard Australian commercial-loan charge. |
| Commonwealth Bank | A one-off documentation fee is described; the borrower may be able to finance it or pay it upfront. | Ask for both versions if available, because financing the fee increases the balance on which interest is calculated. |
| Monthly maintenance | NAB’s cited page states no monthly maintenance fee for the referenced product. | “No monthly fee” does not mean no other fee. Check establishment, documentation, discharge and other listed charges. |
| Other charges | Amounts are not stated in the supplied lender summaries. | Require the actual quote to list every applicable charge rather than assuming it is zero. |
A fee’s timing matters as much as its label. A $600 charge paid at settlement is a known cash outlay; the same charge added to the loan becomes part of the financed balance and can attract interest. Ask the lender to show the total amount payable both with fees paid upfront and with fees capitalised when both choices are offered.
Balloon payments and residuals
A balloon is a scheduled lump sum due at the end of the agreement. It reduces the amount repaid through regular instalments, so the periodic payment is usually lower. The trade-off is a large final obligation and, depending on the structure, more interest paid over the term.

NSW Government vehicle-finance guidance says loans with a balloon repayment usually have lower monthly repayments during the term. That statement describes the cash-flow effect, not a guarantee of lower total cost. Lender guidance from NAB, CommBank and Westpac warns that a balloon can increase interest across the term.
Compare no-balloon and balloon quotes correctly
- Keep the vehicle, deposit, financed amount, rate and term unchanged.
- Record the regular payment under each structure.
- Record the final balloon and its due date.
- Add every regular payment, the balloon and all fees to obtain total amount payable.
- Decide how the balloon will be funded: retained cash, sale or trade-in of the vehicle, refinancing or another documented source.
Do not assume the vehicle’s future sale value will cover the balloon. Used-vehicle values can be different from the balance due, and the lender’s contract—not an informal estimate—sets the amount payable. If the business cannot make the final payment without relying on an uncertain sale or another approval, a no-balloon structure may be safer even when its regular payments are higher.
Fixed versus variable rates
A fixed rate gives a defined rate for the period stated in the agreement, which can make scheduled payments easier to budget. A variable rate can move when the lender changes its pricing or when the contract’s specified conditions occur. The quote must identify which applies; “the rate” by itself is incomplete.
- Ask whether the rate is fixed for the entire term or only an initial period.
- For a variable quote, ask how a rate change affects the payment, the term or both.
- Request an explanation of how notice of a change is provided.
- Compare total cost under the quoted rate and understand that a variable quote is not a guaranteed final cost.
NSW Government guidance discusses fixed and variable rates in vehicle finance. The legal treatment of a commercial contract depends on the agreement and jurisdiction, so do not assume a consumer-loan rule applies to a business vehicle.
Term, payment frequency and cash flow
ANZ displays a business car-loan term range of one to seven years on its product page. That is the range shown for that product, not a rule for every lender or vehicle. A shorter term generally means larger scheduled payments but fewer payment periods; a longer term generally spreads payments more thinly. Compare the total amount payable rather than choosing solely by the smallest instalment.

Payment frequency should match when the business receives cash. Ask whether the quote is monthly or another frequency, whether the first payment date is different from later dates, and whether payment timing changes the total. Compare offers using the same frequency before deciding that one regular amount is lower.

Flexibility has value if the business may sell the vehicle, refinance or repay from surplus cash. Ask the lender for its written early-payout calculation and whether additional payments are permitted without charge.
- Does the contract allow extra principal payments?
- Is there an early-repayment or break charge, and how is it calculated?
- Is the charge different for a fixed-rate agreement?
- What is the discharge or release fee when the vehicle is sold?
- How quickly will the lender release its security after final payment?
- Does paying early reduce future interest, fees, or both?
ANZ warns that early-repayment charges may be significant for its product. That is a product-specific warning, not evidence that every commercial vehicle loan imposes the same charge. CommBank also describes flexible terms and total-cost information on its product material; the signed agreement controls the actual result.
Security, guarantees and eligibility
A commercial vehicle loan may be secured by the vehicle, and the lender may request a personal guarantee or other support. Record these requirements next to the price because they affect business and personal risk even when they do not appear in the interest-rate headline.
Confirm eligibility before comparing a rate too closely:

- Is the applicant an eligible business type and operating in the lender’s accepted region?
- Does the vehicle meet age, type and useful-life requirements?
- Is the vehicle for business or commercial use under the product definition?
- Are financial statements, identification, trading history or other documents required?
- Will a personal guarantee be required, and what assets secure the agreement?
The NSW Government states that vehicles leased for business or commercial purposes are outside the consumer-credit legislation discussed on its vehicle-finance page. That statement is NSW-specific and addresses the legislation covered there; it does not settle the rules in another Australian state, another country or every type of business agreement. Check the contract and obtain local legal or financial advice where the classification matters.

Ignoring the final payment
Problem: A low monthly figure appears affordable until the balloon falls due. Correction: Put the balloon and due date at the top of the cash-flow plan and obtain a no-balloon quote.
Assuming fees are universal
Problem: A fee shown by one lender is treated as an industry standard, or an unstated fee is assumed to be zero. Correction: Use lender-specific figures only and require the written offer to list applicable charges.
Using an old or indicative rate
Problem: Rates change and approval can alter a tailored quote. Correction: Check the quote date, expiry, approval status and conditions that could change pricing.
Overlooking the exit
Problem: The business later discovers that early repayment or sale requires a significant charge. Correction: Ask for the payout method, discharge process and extra-payment rules before signing.
Applying consumer assumptions to a commercial contract
Problem: A business vehicle is treated as though every consumer-credit protection or fee rule automatically applies. Correction: Identify the governing contract and local rules; the NSW Government’s stated consumer-credit scope for business or commercial vehicle leases is not a universal rule.
Questions to ask before accepting a quote
- What exact agreement type am I being offered?
- What amount is advanced, and which fees or costs are included in it?
- Is the rate fixed or variable, and for what period?
- What could change the rate, repayment or final approval?
- What are the regular payments, payment dates and total number of payments?
- Is there a balloon or residual, when is it due, and what is the exact amount?
- What is the total amount payable including every fee and the balloon?
- Are there monthly, annual, documentation, establishment, discharge or other charges?
- What happens if I make an extra payment or repay early?
- What security, guarantee and insurance conditions apply?
- What vehicle age, type and useful-life limits apply?
- How long is the quote valid, and what is subject to credit approval?
How to make the final decision
First remove any quote that does not fit the business’s eligibility, security or cash-flow requirements. Among the remaining offers, compare total amount payable on the same assumptions. Then weigh the regular payment against the balloon risk, the certainty of a fixed rate against the possible movement of a variable rate, and the cost of early exit against the likelihood that the vehicle will be sold or the loan repaid ahead of schedule.
The sound choice is the offer whose complete cost and obligations the business can meet—not automatically the one with the lowest advertised rate or smallest regular instalment.
