How to Compare Car Prices Across Dealerships and Avoid Hidden Fees

Get comparable written out-the-door quotes for the same vehicle, inspect every fee and rebate condition, and evaluate financing, trade-ins and add-ons separately.

By CarCody Team

The fairest way to compare dealerships is to obtain a written, itemized out-the-door (OTD) price for the same vehicle before discussing financing. The OTD figure should show the vehicle price, dealer-required charges, taxes, title and registration amounts, and any add-ons. Compare those totals first; compare APR, loan term and total repayment separately. A monthly payment or a large trade-in allowance can make an expensive car appear cheap.

This guide is written for U.S. shoppers. Dealer inventory, rebates, interest rates and state fee rules change, so verify every quote for the vehicle and transaction you are actually considering.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What an out-the-door price includes

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes an out-the-door price as the total price before financing, including taxes and fees. Ask for it in writing before you visit or let a dealer run its financing. A written number gives you a comparable record and makes late-added charges easier to spot. The FTC recommends requesting this figure even if your trade-in has not been valued yet. See the FTC’s consumer guidance on dealer advertising and promotions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use one definition with every dealer: the amount required to take the vehicle home, before interest, with every charge the dealer is requiring and every product you have agreed to buy. Ask the dealer to identify government charges that you pay directly rather than bundling them into the dealer’s total.

Line in the quote What to verify
Vehicle selling price Exact stock number or VIN, trim, model year, equipment and condition.
Dealer-required fees Document, preparation, delivery, origination, market-adjustment or similar charges; ask what each pays for.
Taxes Sales or use tax calculated for your registration address. Government-set taxes generally are not negotiable.
Title and registration State or local charges, including any amount you must pay directly to the government.
Rebates and discounts Whether each reduction is unconditional or requires a qualification, such as a particular financing source, military status, student status or a trade-in.
Add-ons GAP products, window etching, service contracts, extended warranties and other products listed separately with their prices.
Out-the-door total The sum before financing. Confirm that no other dealer-required charge is omitted.

The FTC’s Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency: FAQs, published in September 2026, says FTC staff’s view is that an advertised price should be “the actual price any consumer can walk in and pay.” That is staff guidance, not a replacement for state law or legal advice. It also distinguishes government-required charges paid directly by the consumer from dealer-required fees that belong in an advertised price.

Step 1: Define the exact vehicle before requesting quotes

Identify the car precisely

Two vehicles with the same model name can have different engines, drivetrains, option packages, destination charges, mileage or condition. Send each dealer the same description and request the stock number or VIN in the response. For a used vehicle, include mileage and ask whether it is certified, has a branded title or carries any disclosed damage. The FTC’s used-car guidance explains why the vehicle’s condition and written disclosures matter.

Confirm that the vehicle is really available

Ask the salesperson to confirm that the specific vehicle is on the lot or otherwise available for sale, not merely a model used in an advertisement. Request the date of the confirmation. If it has been sold, moved, reserved or is subject to a deposit, it is not a usable comparison quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate eligibility from the headline discount

Have the dealer list every rebate and discount by name and state who qualifies. A price that requires dealer financing, a trade-in, a lease, a particular payment method or another status is not an unconditional price for every shopper. Ask for two totals when necessary: the price available to you and the price advertised with qualifications.

Step 2: Ask every dealer for the same written quote

Email or message each dealer with the same request. Give a deadline for the quote and ask for a reply that shows the vehicle identity, itemized charges and an OTD total before financing.

  1. Provide the year, make, model, trim, key options, exterior color if material, stock number or VIN, and whether the vehicle is new or used.
  2. Ask for the selling price before taxes and fees, every dealer-required fee, estimated taxes, title and registration charges, each rebate or discount with its eligibility condition, and every proposed add-on.
  3. Request the written OTD total before financing and ask whether the number changes if you use outside financing or pay in cash.
  4. Ask the dealer to state how long the quote is valid and what event could change it, such as a vehicle sale or an expired rebate.
  5. Save the response, the advertisement and any text messages. A quote that cannot be produced in writing is difficult to audit against the final contract.

A concise request can say: “Please send the written out-the-door price for stock number or VIN, including the selling price, all dealer fees, taxes, title and registration, rebates and add-ons. Show which rebates I qualify for. Quote it before financing and state whether it changes with outside financing.”

Step 3: Put quotes into one comparison sheet

Do not compare one dealer’s advertised price with another dealer’s financed payment. Put the same fields in the same order and keep the trade-in off the first comparison.

If a dealer will not itemize a requested line, mark it as unexplained rather than assuming it is included. Ask for a corrected quote before traveling or leaving a deposit.

How to recognize and challenge hidden fees

Ask four questions about every charge

  • What is the charge for? Require a plain-language explanation, not only an abbreviation.
  • Who requires it? Distinguish a state or local government charge from a fee set by the dealer.
  • Is it required for this transaction? A product or service you can decline should not be presented as mandatory.
  • Was it included in the advertised price and written OTD quote? A new line at signing needs an explanation and your agreement.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) lists possible dealer charges such as preparation, origination, document, delivery and market-adjustment fees. Its guidance on negotiating a car or auto loan notes that taxes, title and registration fees set by a state or locality generally cannot be negotiated. That does not mean every dealer fee is illegal or that every dealer fee must be accepted; ask what local law permits and whether the amount is disclosed as required.

Document fees and state differences

States take different approaches to document fees: some use general consumer-protection rules, some require separate disclosures or wording, and some impose caps. The FTC’s September 2026 staff FAQs describe federal advertising principles but do not create a state-by-state fee schedule. Check your state’s motor-vehicle agency and consumer-protection rules when a document fee, electronic filing fee or similar charge seems unusual.

Warning signs in an advertised price

  • The ad says “with dealer financing,” “after all rebates” or similar language without showing the price available to you.
  • A mandatory accessory or protection package appears only after you arrive.
  • The vehicle in the ad is unavailable, but the dealer uses the ad to start a different sale.
  • The dealer refuses to provide the stock number, VIN or a written OTD figure.
  • The final worksheet contains a charge that was absent from the written quote and has no clear explanation.

Do not assume a low advertised number is fraudulent solely because it excludes a government charge you must pay directly. Instead, ask the dealer to identify that charge and include it in your personal cash-to-complete calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep financing out of the vehicle-price comparison

Compare the OTD prices first, then evaluate financing. The FTC’s financing guidance recommends looking beyond the monthly payment. Line up the APR, loan term, amount financed, down payment and total repayment. A longer term can lower the monthly payment while increasing total interest.

Use an independent preapproval as a benchmark

A bank or credit-union preapproval gives you a reference APR and maximum amount before you discuss dealer financing. You can still accept the dealer’s offer if it is better, but compare both offers using the same amount financed and term. Ask whether a rebate disappears when you use outside financing; if so, calculate both complete OTD-and-financing scenarios rather than comparing only the rebate.

Separate the vehicle price from borrowing costs

Interest is not a dealer fee and should not be used to make two vehicle prices appear equal. Record the cash price and the financed amount separately. The CFPB explains that the interest rate and optional products affect the amount borrowed and that ownership also includes taxes, maintenance, insurance and fuel. Its overview of factors in a vehicle’s price can help you account for those costs after the purchase comparison.

Handle a trade-in as a separate transaction

Ask each dealer for the purchase OTD price without assuming a trade allowance. Then obtain the trade-in offer as its own line. A dealer can offer more for your trade while charging more for the replacement vehicle, leaving you no clear way to tell which deal is better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the trade value, any payoff on your existing loan, and the net equity separately. Compare the replacement vehicle’s OTD price across dealers before subtracting trade equity. When a dealer says a discount depends on trading in a vehicle, request the price both with and without that condition.

Evaluate add-ons only after you choose the vehicle

GAP products, window etching, extended warranties and service contracts are optional products or services identified in FTC guidance. Ask for the price, coverage, exclusions, cancellation terms and whether the product is financed. Say no to anything you do not want, and check that the final contract includes only products you accepted at the quoted prices.

Do not judge an add-on solely by its label. Its suitability depends on your loan-to-value position, driving needs, existing coverage, exclusions and price. The key comparison is the vehicle OTD total without unwanted products, followed by a separate decision on each product.

At the dealership: verify the contract before signing

  1. Match the VIN or stock number and the equipment to the vehicle you inspected.
  2. Compare the selling price, fees, taxes, title and registration with the written quote.
  3. Check every rebate condition and confirm that a financing-dependent discount has not been presented as unconditional.
  4. Review the add-on section line by line. Cross out or remove products you declined before signing.
  5. Compare the amount financed, APR, term, payment and total of payments with the financing offer you selected.
  6. Ask for a complete copy of the signed buyer’s order and finance contract.

If the numbers change, pause the transaction. Ask the manager to explain each difference in writing and issue a corrected buyer’s order. You can leave rather than sign a contract you no longer understand.

What to do when a dealer changes the price

Before you travel

Request confirmation that the vehicle remains available and that the quoted OTD price applies to your qualifications and intended payment method. If the dealer says a rebate expired or the vehicle sold, ask for a new written quote rather than relying on the old advertisement.

At the signing desk

Point to the missing or added line on your written quote. Ask whether it is a government charge paid directly, a dealer-required fee, or an optional product. If the explanation does not resolve the difference, do not sign or leave a deposit that you cannot recover under the deposit terms.

After signing

Keep the advertisement, messages, quote and contract. Contact the dealer promptly about a clerical error and check your state’s consumer-protection or motor-vehicle agency for complaint procedures. Federal and state rules differ, and an individual dispute may require legal advice.

New and used vehicles need slightly different checks

For a new vehicle, verify model year, trim, factory options, destination or delivery charges and whether the advertised vehicle is subject to a market adjustment. For a used vehicle, verify mileage, title history, inspection records, remaining warranty and any certification requirements. In both cases, the comparison still rests on the same vehicle-specific, written OTD price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision rule

Choose the offer with the lowest credible OTD price for a vehicle that is genuinely equivalent and available, unless a different offer provides a documented feature or condition you value. Only after that choice should you weigh APR, term, total repayment, trade equity, add-ons and ongoing ownership costs. If two quotes are close, favor the one with clearer documentation and fewer unexplained conditions; clarity reduces the risk of a last-minute change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask for an OTD price if I am still deciding how to pay?

Yes. Ask for the OTD price before financing, then ask separately whether the price or rebate changes with dealer financing, outside financing or cash. This keeps the vehicle comparison intact.

Are all dealer fees negotiable?

No. Taxes, title and registration charges set by a government generally are not negotiable. Dealer-set charges may be negotiable, subject to state disclosure rules and the dealer’s policy. Ask what each fee is and who requires it.

Should I include my trade-in in the first quote request?

Disclose it if a rebate depends on a trade, but request the vehicle’s OTD price separately. Compare the trade allowance and any loan payoff as separate figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if an advertised price is lower than every written quote?

Ask which vehicle, rebates, financing conditions and fees produce the advertised number. Confirm availability and request the complete OTD calculation. A headline price is not comparable until those conditions are known.
