Compare the same car, in the same configuration, for the same registration location and delivery window. Then compare an itemised on-road total, insurance coverage, offer conditions and a clearly defined delivery milestone. In India, the ex-showroom figure is only the starting price: registration and road tax, insurance, accessories, handling or other charges can change the amount you actually pay. Dealer offers and waiting estimates can also depend on city, variant, stock and the price applicable on the invoice or delivery date.

This guide gives you a repeatable worksheet and negotiation process for comparing authorised dealers without treating a conditional discount or an unverified waiting-period promise as guaranteed savings.

Start with the number that actually matters: comparable payable cost

An on-road quote should answer one question: how much will this exact vehicle cost to register and take home under the same assumptions? A lower headline price is not necessarily cheaper if it uses a different variant, a lower insurance cover, fewer required items or a discount that depends on financing or an exchange vehicle.

Bajaj Auto’s official booking FAQ describes ex-showroom price as a base price including GST, but excluding registration, insurance, accessories, handling charges, other optional costs and their respective taxes. The exact mix and amount of the remaining items depends on the registration location, policy selected, vehicle configuration and invoice date.

Quote component What to request Why the amount can differ
Ex-showroom Exact make, model, variant, powertrain, transmission and colour, with quote date Manufacturer price revisions, variant changes and colour or stock availability
Registration and road tax RTO, registration fee, road tax and any listed statutory items for the buyer’s city and state State rules, vehicle value, fuel or powertrain category and registration location
Insurance Insurer, policy type, premium, IDV, deductibles and add-ons Coverage, insurer pricing, vehicle value, driver details and selected add-ons
Accessories Every accessory on its own line, including quantity and tax Dealer bundle, customer choice and different equipment levels
Handling or other services Each charge described separately, with its stated basis Dealer practice and whether the item is optional, statutory or already included
Discounts and benefits Cash discount, exchange, finance, loyalty, insurance or accessory benefit, each with conditions Eligibility, campaign period, stock, model, variant, city and combinability rules

Ask the dealer to mark every line as required, optional or conditional. Also ask whether the figure is an estimate or final and which items can change before invoicing.

Make every quote genuinely like-for-like

Before requesting prices, write one configuration brief and send the same brief to each dealer. Include:

  • Make, model and exact variant or grade.
  • Fuel type or electric powertrain, engine or battery specification and transmission.
  • Colour, if it affects available stock or the delivery estimate.
  • Registration city and state, even if the dealer is in another city.
  • Whether you want only mandatory equipment or specific accessories.
  • Whether you are paying outright or considering finance, and whether an exchange vehicle is involved.
  • Your target booking and delivery window.

Do not compare a quote for a different variant merely because the ex-showroom figure looks close. Likewise, do not treat a quote with dealer-installed accessories as equivalent to one without them. Keep optional equipment visible instead of allowing it to disappear inside a single “on-road” number.

Request dated, itemised quotations in writing

Use email or a message that can be saved, and ask for the quote on the dealer’s letterhead or official system. A verbal figure is useful for an initial check but is difficult to audit when the price, stock or offer changes.

  1. State the exact configuration and registration location.
  2. Ask for the quote date and the validity or expiry date.
  3. Request separate lines for ex-showroom, RTO or registration items, insurance, accessories, services and every discount.
  4. Ask which items are compulsory, which are optional and which depend on finance, exchange, insurance purchase or another condition.
  5. Ask whether each amount is estimated or final and what event causes it to change.
  6. Request the expected booking, allocation, dispatch, registration and handover dates, or state clearly which of those milestones the dealer’s single date represents.
  7. Keep the booking receipt, quote revision and subsequent pro-forma invoice together.

Bajaj’s FAQ states that the price on the invoice date applies and that the final amount depends on the current ex-showroom amount, selected insurance, RTO charges and add-ons. That makes the quote date and invoice-price-change wording essential parts of your comparison, not administrative details.

Use a worksheet that exposes hidden differences

Create one worksheet for the same configuration and registration location. If a dealer has not supplied a value, record that fact rather than assuming zero.

Keep the registration location and assumptions in the worksheet heading. If one dealer quotes insurance from a different insurer or uses a different IDV, do not put the premiums in a single ranking until the coverage is comparable.

Compare insurance by protection, not just premium

IRDAI states that third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles used on public roads in India. That mandatory cover is only one part of the insurance decision. Own-damage or comprehensive options can differ materially even when the premium totals look similar.

Check the policy structure

  • Policy type: identify third-party liability, own-damage and any bundled or add-on cover.
  • IDV: compare the insured declared value, because it affects the maximum payable amount for a total loss or theft claim.
  • Deductibles: record compulsory and voluntary deductibles; a lower premium may transfer more cost to you during a claim.
  • Coverage and exclusions: read the listed risks, exclusions, add-ons and claim conditions instead of comparing only the premium.
  • Insurer and service: retain the insurer name, policy wording and contact route supplied with the quote.

IRDAI’s motor-insurance guidance warns that a lower premium can accompany lower cover, higher deductibles or a lower IDV. Ask for competing insurer quotes if the dealer presents only one option, and keep the selected policy details beside the vehicle quote.

Separate unconditional savings from conditional dealer offers

A discount is useful only when you know its eligibility and whether you can actually claim it. Put each benefit in its own row and classify it before subtracting anything from the payable total.

Offer type Questions to ask How to treat it in the comparison
Unconditional cash discount Does it apply to this exact variant, city and stock unit? Is it shown on the written quote? Subtract only after written confirmation and a stated validity period.
Exchange benefit Is a qualifying vehicle required? Is the amount an exchange bonus, valuation or both? Keep separate from the car price until the vehicle inspection and eligibility are complete.
Finance benefit Must you use a particular lender, tenure or loan amount? Are interest, processing or insurance costs different? Show as a conditional scenario; do not call it a cash discount.
Insurance benefit Is the benefit tied to buying the dealer’s policy or a specified cover? Compare net protection and premium, not the benefit in isolation.
Accessory or service benefit Which items are included, and what is their actual listed value? Do not treat an unwanted accessory bundle as cash-equivalent savings.
Loyalty or special-category benefit What proof, ownership history or customer category is required? Subtract only in the eligible buyer’s scenario.

Renault India’s published terms illustrate why offer wording matters: offers may vary by model, variant and city, may be limited by stock, may not be combinable and may use the price and offer applicable at delivery rather than at booking. Those are Renault’s terms, not a universal rule for every manufacturer, but they show the questions to ask every dealer.

A Competition Commission of India order concerning Hyundai discusses, in a case-specific setting, a manufacturer’s maximum selling price, dealer discounts and allegations about discount control. It should not be used as proof of a current nationwide discount rule or a standard saving. The practical lesson is narrower: request the dealer’s best itemised written offer and ask whether a comparable authorised dealer’s unconditional benefit can be matched.

Calculate an effective total without hiding conditions

Use two or more scenarios instead of one misleading “after discount” figure:

  1. Base payable: add ex-showroom, registration and RTO items, selected insurance, required equipment and any confirmed charges.
  2. Unconditional scenario: subtract only discounts that are written, eligible and not tied to another purchase or service.
  3. Conditional scenarios: show exchange, finance, insurance, loyalty and accessory benefits separately, with the condition beside each amount.
  4. Delivery-date scenario: note that a price or offer may change before invoicing or handover and identify who bears that risk under the written terms.

For example, if a quote contains a confirmed cash discount and a separate finance incentive, calculate one total with only the cash discount and a second total that adds the finance incentive after listing the required loan conditions. This keeps a buyer who pays outright from mistaking a loan-linked benefit for a guaranteed saving.

Do not subtract an exchange bonus before the dealer confirms the vehicle’s inspection value. Do not subtract an insurance benefit while ignoring a higher premium, lower IDV or larger deductible. Do not net an accessory package against the price if you would not have bought those accessories independently.

Turn a waiting-period promise into a measurable estimate

There is no reliable national waiting-period table covering every brand, model, city, variant and colour in the material available for this guide. A salesperson’s “two weeks” is not comparable with another dealer’s “two weeks” unless both dates refer to the same milestone and configuration.

Ask which milestone the date means

  • Booking confirmation: the dealer accepts the order and records your configuration.
  • Allocation: a specific vehicle or production slot is assigned to your order.
  • Dispatch: the vehicle leaves the plant, stockyard or supplying location.
  • Registration: the vehicle is processed with the RTO using the required documents and payments.
  • Customer handover: the vehicle is ready for delivery after payment, registration and pre-delivery checks.

Renault’s published terms say availability and delivery time can vary by model and equipment combination. Bajaj’s booking FAQ describes dealership allocation before notifying the customer to make final payment and directs buyers to the dealership for expected allocation and RTO information. These examples show why you must obtain a configuration-specific estimate; they do not establish a universal sequence or waiting time.

Questions that make the estimate useful

  1. Is the quoted date for allocation, dispatch, registration or handover?
  2. Is the vehicle already in dealer or regional stock, or is it awaiting allocation?
  3. Does the estimate apply to the exact variant, transmission, powertrain and colour?
  4. What event will trigger the next update, and how often will the dealer update you?
  5. Could a change in price or offer at invoice or delivery affect the booking decision?
  6. What happens to the booking amount if the promised configuration cannot be supplied?

Ask for the estimate and any change notices in writing. A dated estimate with a stated milestone is more useful than a single number with no definition, even though neither is a guarantee of handover.

Use a dealer-to-dealer negotiation process

  1. Obtain at least two itemised quotes for the same configuration and registration location.
  2. Remove optional accessories and unrequested services from the first comparison, or list them separately.
  3. Compare insurance on policy details, IDV and deductibles, not only premium.
  4. Mark each benefit as unconditional or conditional and calculate the corresponding scenario.
  5. Send the preferred dealer the comparable written quote and ask whether it can match the unconditional benefit.
  6. Request the revised offer with validity, stock and combinability terms stated.
  7. Before paying the balance, reconcile the final pro-forma invoice with the accepted quote and confirm any price change permitted by the terms.

There is no established universal discount amount or guaranteed negotiation outcome. The strongest leverage is a clean, comparable written offer that lets the dealer respond to a specific figure without debating different variants or hidden conditions.

Common comparison errors and how to correct them

Comparing ex-showroom figures only

Problem: registration, insurance and accessories are missing, so the apparent saving is not a payable saving.

Correction: compare the complete itemised total for the same location and configuration.

Accepting a bundled “on-road” number

Problem: you cannot tell whether a charge is compulsory, optional or duplicated.

Correction: request every component on a separate line and ask for the basis of each service charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the cheapest insurance quote automatically

Problem: lower cover, lower IDV or higher deductibles can reduce the apparent premium.

Correction: compare policy type, coverage, IDV, deductibles and exclusions alongside premium.

Subtracting every advertised benefit

Problem: finance, exchange, loyalty or insurance conditions may not apply to you.

Correction: calculate an unconditional total and separate eligible scenarios.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a booking price as locked

Problem: the invoice or delivery terms may apply a later price.

Correction: read the booking receipt and written price-change clause; ask what happens if the vehicle is invoiced later.

Comparing vague waiting periods

Problem: one dealer means allocation while another means handover.

Correction: name the milestone, configuration and date in every estimate.

Choose the best quote according to your priority

Do not force cost, certainty and speed into one blended ranking. Decide which trade-off matters to you:

  • Lowest certain payable cost: rank the unconditional scenario after verifying insurance value and required items.
  • Lowest possible cost: show conditional finance, exchange or loyalty scenarios, but keep eligibility and extra obligations visible.
  • Earliest delivery: prefer a dated allocation or stock confirmation for the exact configuration, not an unsupported verbal promise.
  • Protection after a loss: choose the policy whose coverage, IDV and deductibles meet your needs, even if its premium is not the lowest.
  • Price certainty: favour a quote with clear validity and invoice-price terms, while recognising that manufacturer and statutory amounts can still change under the stated conditions.

What to recheck before signing or paying the balance

  • Current manufacturer price for the exact variant and colour.
  • State and local registration or road-tax calculation.
  • Insurance policy type, insurer, IDV, deductibles and selected add-ons.
  • Accessory quantities, prices and whether installation is included.
  • Every discount’s eligibility, expiry, stock limit and combinability.
  • Booking cancellation or refund terms.
  • Allocation status and the milestone represented by the latest delivery date.
  • Final invoice amount and any difference from the accepted quote.

Prices, taxes, insurance options, stock and delivery estimates change by location and configuration. Recheck the manufacturer’s current terms, the relevant state or local RTO authority, the insurer and the selling dealer when you act. Official pages establish the comparison dimensions and the terms attached to their own products; they do not provide a current price for every car or a nationwide waiting-period average.
