Neither a battery subscription nor buying the battery upfront is always cheaper. Compare the battery-included car price with the subscription car price plus every battery payment you expect to make over your planned mileage and ownership period. Then weigh only the warranty, replacement, assistance, transfer and insurance terms promised in the specific contract.
What you are comparing
With an outright purchase, the battery cost is included in the vehicle price or otherwise paid upfront. With a subscription or battery-as-a-service (BaaS) arrangement, at least part of that cost is separated from the initial price and paid on a recurring basis. The precise structure varies by vehicle, market and contract; “lease” and “subscription” are not enough to establish the actual terms.
Some offers charge by distance. Renault Group’s 2020 explainer describes leasing charges that vary with kilometres driven, while Hyundai Motor India’s July 2, 2026 announcement gives a per-kilometre starting rate for one India-specific offer. Do not assume that every subscription uses mileage billing or offers the same protections.
Build a like-for-like cost comparison
Use two offers for the same vehicle, market and equipment wherever possible, and apply the same ownership period and expected distance to both. Include financing and resale assumptions only when you have comparable, credible figures; do not treat a lower sticker price as a lower total cost.

| Comparison item | Battery bought upfront | Battery subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Initial vehicle price | Battery-included price from the local offer | Subscription vehicle price from the local offer |
| Battery payments during ownership | Any separate battery charge, if applicable | Recurring fee multiplied by the expected billing periods, using the contract’s fee bands or distance basis |
| Total over your planned term | Initial price plus relevant financing costs, less a supported resale estimate | Initial price plus expected subscription payments and relevant financing costs, less a supported resale estimate |
| Warranty and battery-health terms | Exact battery warranty and any stated capacity threshold | Exact coverage, conditions and any stated replacement trigger |
| Replacement and breakdown assistance | What the vehicle warranty or separate service contract covers | What the subscription contract explicitly includes |
| Cancellation and resale transfer | Any relevant sale or warranty conditions | Whether the agreement can be cancelled, transferred or continued by a buyer |
| Insurance | How the policy identifies and covers the battery | Whether the policy must identify the leased battery and rental amount |
For a distance-based fee, calculate payments using your expected kilometres over the whole ownership term and the contract’s actual rate bands, minimums, caps and billing rules. If a quote gives only a starting rate, it is not enough to calculate the total. Keep the assumptions visible so you can see which one changes the result.
Use distance and ownership time—not a generic break-even rule
A subscription’s cumulative payments depend on its fee structure and how long you keep the vehicle; mileage-based charges also depend on how far you drive. A short ownership period or low distance can produce a different comparison from many years of high use, but the result depends on the actual prices and contract. No universal break-even period follows from the available manufacturer examples.

For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
- Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
For context only, Renault Group’s 2020 article said the battery purchase cost in its ZOE example was equivalent to 100 months of leasing. Renault’s March 2018 France release reported that the ZOE outright-purchase version cost €8,900 including VAT more than the battery-lease version. These are dated examples from a particular model and market, not current quotations or a rule for other vehicles.
Compare what the battery contract actually protects
Warranty and battery health
For an outright purchase, check the vehicle’s current battery warranty, including its duration, distance limit, exclusions and any battery-health threshold that triggers a remedy. A warranty period alone does not tell you what happens if capacity declines.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
For a subscription, identify what condition prompts repair or replacement, who decides whether it has been met, and whether there are exclusions. Renault Group’s 2020 explainer described a battery performance guarantee for certain purchase examples and replacement as an advantage of its lease example; those statements apply to the described Renault arrangements, not subscriptions generally. The same article listed historical, model-specific warranty examples: 8 years or 160,000 km for ZOE, and 5 years or 100,000 km for Kangoo Z.E. and Master Z.E. Verify current warranty documents for the vehicle you are considering.
Breakdown assistance and other services
Ask whether assistance is included, what incidents qualify and whether there are distance, location or usage limits. A subscription does not automatically include replacement or roadside help; count a protection only if the applicable contract says it is covered.

Check resale, transfer and insurance before signing
If you expect to sell the car, establish whether the battery is owned or leased, whether a buyer can take over the agreement, and what happens if they decline. Renault’s later explainer says a used-EV buyer may face a choice between leasing and buying the battery. Treat that as a reason to inspect the specific vehicle’s paperwork, not as a rule for every used EV.
Confirm the insurer’s requirements too. Renault’s explainer says the insurance contract should mention the battery and the amount stated in the rental agreement. Ask your insurer how the battery must be identified and covered under the policy in your country, and confirm that the subscription provider’s requirements match.

Example: a current offer still needs a full quote
Hyundai Motor India’s announcement dated July 2, 2026 gives the CRETA Electric a starting ex-showroom price of INR 10.99 lakh under BaaS, with battery EMI starting at INR 3.9 per kilometre. It also states a battery warranty of 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, whichever comes earlier. These are India-specific announced figures, not a complete ownership-cost estimate or a price applicable elsewhere. A buyer still needs the battery-included price, actual applicable billing terms, expected distance and contract details to compare the options.
A practical decision sequence
- Get both local offers. Request the battery-included price and the subscription version’s vehicle price for the same model and configuration.
- Set your ownership assumptions. Estimate how long you will keep the vehicle and how many kilometres you will drive each year.
- Calculate subscription payments. Apply the contract’s real billing basis, rates and limits to that distance and term; do not substitute a starting rate for a full quote.
- Compare total costs. Add the relevant vehicle and battery costs for each option over the same period. Include financing and resale only where you can support a like-for-like estimate.
- Verify protections and exit terms. Compare warranty triggers, replacement, assistance, cancellation, resale transfer and insurance requirements in the actual documents.
- Test your assumptions. Recalculate with a shorter or longer ownership period and a higher or lower annual distance if those are plausible for you.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s vehicle cost calculator frames EV comparisons around total ownership cost, but it does not establish household battery-subscription prices or the terms of any particular offer. Use local contracts and quotations for the battery-specific decision.
