Choose a home EV charger by starting with your daily driving and how long the car sits parked—not by assuming you need the fastest unit. Level 1 may cover an overnight routine if a suitable dedicated outlet is near the parking spot. Consider Level 2 when your commute, schedule, or battery needs more charging than that parked time can provide. Before buying, confirm your vehicle’s connector and have an electrician assess the home’s capacity, circuit, and installation requirements.
Decide whether Level 1 or Level 2 fits your routine
Level 1 uses a standard household outlet and can be a practical option when the car is parked overnight for long enough to replace the energy used during a typical day. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (DOE AFDC) says many EV owners can meet daily range needs this way if a dedicated branch-circuit outlet is near the parking location. See DOE AFDC’s home-charging guidance.
Level 2 uses 240-volt equipment and is worth considering when you drive farther, have less predictable parking time, or need to replenish a larger battery within a shorter overnight window. It is not automatically necessary for every EV owner.
| Option | DOE AFDC consumer comparison | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 2–5 miles of range per hour, according to DOE AFDC’s consumer guidance, retrieved in 2026. | May work for modest daily energy needs and long overnight parking; confirm that a dedicated branch-circuit outlet is available where you park. |
| Level 2 | 10–30 miles of range per hour, according to DOE AFDC’s consumer guidance, retrieved in 2026. | Can replenish more energy during a given parking window, but actual speed depends on the vehicle and the installation. |
These miles-per-hour ranges are approximate, not a promise for a particular car. DOE AFDC’s separate charging-equipment guidance gives about 5 miles of range per hour for Level 1 assuming 1.9 kW and about 25 miles per hour for Level 2, while noting that Level 2 equipment ranges from 2.9 to 19.2 kW. Those figures describe general equipment performance, not a guaranteed result for your vehicle.

- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
Actual charging time also depends on the battery’s state of charge, capacity and type, the vehicle’s onboard charger, charging power, and the home’s electrical service. Use the car maker’s charging information alongside the equipment specifications when deciding whether Level 1 provides enough energy for your routine.
Check connector fit and vehicle guidance
Confirm the charging inlet on your specific vehicle and model year before ordering. DOE AFDC identifies SAE J1772 for Level 1 and Level 2 equipment and also discusses J3400/NACS Level 2 equipment in its consumer guidance. Connector availability and compatibility can differ by vehicle, so follow the automaker’s instructions for the exact car.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
- Match the charger connector to the vehicle inlet, or confirm which adapter the manufacturer approves.
- Check the vehicle owner’s manual or automaker charging guidance for connector and adapter requirements.
- Do not assume an adapter is suitable at every charging rate; verify its stated compatibility with both the vehicle and charging equipment.
Have the electrical installation assessed before buying
Level 2 is an electrical project as well as an equipment purchase. Some homes may not have enough electrical capacity for the desired charger, and DOE AFDC advises consulting an electrician. Ask for an assessment of the existing service, the proposed charger’s load and circuit requirements, and whether additional electrical work is needed.
DOE AFDC describes a typical residential Level 2 example delivering up to 30 A and 7.2 kW on a dedicated 40 A circuit. That is general guidance, not a wiring specification for every charger or home. The unit’s installation instructions, the electrician’s assessment, and locally adopted code determine what is appropriate for your installation.

- Choose the parking position. Identify where the car will usually sit and whether the cable can reach the inlet without crossing a walkway or creating a trip hazard.
- Ask about installation type. Compare a plug-in unit with a hardwired one based on the charger instructions, the available electrical setup, and the electrician’s recommendation.
- Confirm capacity and circuit needs. Have the electrician check whether the home can support the selected equipment and what circuit or service work is required.
- Check permits and local rules. DOE AFDC states that charging-equipment installations must comply with local and state codes and regulations. Ask the electrician or local permitting authority which approvals apply.
Compare Level 2 equipment on practical fit and safety
Once the electrician has helped define what the home can support, compare equipment that suits that installation. Useful criteria include:
- Output and circuit requirements: Match the charger’s specifications to the vehicle’s onboard charging capability and the electrician’s recommended circuit.
- Connector: Verify that it fits the vehicle or uses an automaker-approved adapter for the intended charging rate.
- Cord reach and mounting: Check that the cable reaches the car’s inlet from the proposed mounting location. Position a wall unit to avoid vehicle impact and trip hazards.
- Indoor or outdoor rating: If the unit will be outside, choose equipment rated for outdoor installation. DOE AFDC says outdoor charging is safe in rain when suitable outdoor-rated equipment is used.
- Safety certification: DOE recommends safety-certified equipment, such as products tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, and recommends ENERGY STAR-rated products. Verify the specific unit’s certification and rating.
Smart features are optional. DOE AFDC lists features such as charging timers, data collection, displays, communications, and keypads. Choose them when they solve a real need—for example, if scheduling matters to your household—not simply because a charger offers them.

Compare total installed cost, not just the charger price
The equipment is only one part of the budget. Include electrician labor, any needed circuit or service work, permits, and local utility or state incentives. DOE AFDC describes Level 2 equipment costs as variable and recommends getting estimates from both a utility and an electrical contractor. A general equipment figure cannot predict the cost of work at a particular home.
Ask the electrician for an installation estimate based on your property, and check directly with your utility and relevant local or state programs for current incentives and eligibility. Program terms and availability vary by location and can change.
