Then subtract the car’s estimated resale value at the end of the period you plan to own it. Keep this ownership-period total separate from the monthly payment: a low payment does not necessarily mean a lower overall cost.
Use one ownership period and a consistent formula
Choose the period you want to compare—such as the time you expect to keep the car—and use it for every offer. The IEA Total Cost of Ownership tool models purchase costs, ongoing fueling or charging, maintenance and financing. Its residual-value definition uses a ten-year calculation period; that is the tool’s modeling horizon, not a required ownership period for your own comparison.
For a practical consumer estimate, use:
Ownership-period cost = out-the-door vehicle price + vehicle-loan financing charges and fees + separate battery payments and fees + charging energy + insurance + maintenance and repairs + registration and applicable taxes + relevant home-charger installation − estimated resale value.
This is a comparison worksheet, not a universal accounting or tax rule. Do not count the purchase price and loan principal twice. One approach is to start with the out-the-door price and add financing charges and fees; another is to total the cash paid, including the down payment and scheduled loan payments. Pick one method and apply it consistently.

- IMPORTANT: RED 2-PIN CONNECTOR REQUIRED – This battery ONLY works with the red 2-pin connector shown in the product photos. Many ride-on toys use similar-looking connectors that are not compatible. Compare your connector carefully before purchasing.
- IMPORTANT: VERIFY BATTERY SIZE BEFORE PURCHASE – Battery dimensions are 5.9 x 2.5 x 3.9 inches (151 x 65 x 99 mm). Measure your existing battery and battery compartment before ordering. This battery may not fit all ride-on vehicles.
- HIGHER 9.5AH CAPACITY FOR LONGER PLAYTIME – Premium sealed lead acid battery provides extended runtime compared to many standard 7AH batteries while delivering reliable power for compatible ride-on vehicles.
- INCLUDES REPLACEABLE 40A FUSE HARNESS – Includes SafeAMP 12V 9.5AH SLA battery, red 2-pin connector harness, and replaceable 40-amp fuse for added protection and convenient installation.
- DESIGNED FOR COMPATIBLE 12V RIDE-ON VEHICLES – Intended as a replacement battery for ride-on toys using the red 2-pin connector and requiring a battery measuring approximately 151 x 65 x 99 mm.
Gather the figures for your worksheet
- Get the written out-the-door price. Ask for the vehicle price including taxes and dealer fees. The FTC’s car financing guide recommends getting this figure in writing before discussing financing so you can distinguish the vehicle price from the credit terms.
- Record the down payment and trade-in separately. Note any negative equity that will be rolled into the new borrowing. These affect the amount financed and your cash flow; avoid adding the loan principal as a second vehicle purchase cost.
- Write down the vehicle-loan terms. Record the amount financed, APR, term, total scheduled payments and any fees. The Federal Reserve’s guide to shopping for a car explains how the amount financed relates to purchase price, financed items and the down payment. Compare APR and term as well as the payment: the FTC notes that extending a loan can lower monthly payments while raising the overall cost.
- Check whether the battery is included. If a separate battery agreement applies, record its payment schedule, fees, duration and end-of-contract terms. Do not add separate battery payments if the battery cost is already included in the vehicle price or loan.
- Estimate charging energy for your use. Use your expected annual mileage and the electricity and public-charging mix you expect, with local prices. Charging costs vary by location and use; the U.S. Department of Energy’s electric vehicle ownership-cost information does not establish one amount that applies to every driver.
- Add other ownership costs. Use local estimates for insurance, maintenance, repairs, registration, inspection and applicable taxes. The Federal Reserve’s guide identifies these as costs to consider in addition to financing.
- Include home charging only if your plan requires it. Add equipment and installation costs if you expect to install a charger or dedicated outlet. The IEA tool includes home-charger installation among its inputs; it is not a necessary cost for every buyer.
- Estimate resale value at the end of your period. Subtract the expected sale or scrappage value for that same point in time. The IEA tool’s ten-year residual-value definition is specific to its model; use the horizon you chose for your comparison.
Find out what “battery financing” means in the offer
The phrase does not identify one standard contract. It may mean the battery is included in an ordinary vehicle price and loan, or that a provider separates battery payments from the vehicle purchase. Ask the seller or provider:
- Does the written vehicle price include the battery?
- Who owns the battery during the agreement and after it ends?
- What battery payments, fees or other obligations continue, and for how long?
- What does the contract require or allow at the end of the agreement?
An XPeng filing describes an installment program for vehicles or batteries for eligible customers in China. It shows that a separate battery-payment structure exists in at least one company context; it does not establish that such arrangements are common, available in other markets or offered on the same terms. Review the actual contract rather than assuming the arrangement follows a standard model.

Compare a loan and a lease on the same basis
A loan and a lease have different payment structures and end-of-term outcomes, so compare the costs and what you will own at the end—not just the monthly figures.
| What to compare | Vehicle loan | Lease |
|---|---|---|
| What payments generally cover | Payments repay the amount borrowed plus interest and other finance charges. | Payments generally cover depreciation during the lease period, a rent charge, taxes and fees. |
| Ownership at the end | After the loan is paid, the vehicle is yours, subject to the loan terms. | You do not normally build ownership through lease payments unless you use a purchase option. |
| Terms that can change the comparison | APR, loan term, amount financed and fees. | Mileage limits, excess-wear charges, early-termination terms and any purchase-option value. |
The CFPB’s auto-loan and lease guide describes typical auto-loan terms as three to seven years and typical leases as two to four years. The guide was last reviewed September 12, 2023; those ranges describe typical terms in the guide, not current lender offers or recommendations. When comparing a lease with a purchase, include a buyout price and end-of-lease charges only if they apply to the scenario, and account for the possibility that the lease ends without vehicle ownership.

Make the comparison fair
Keep the assumptions aligned across offers. Compare the same vehicle or a comparable trim, ownership period, annual mileage, location, charging access and end-of-period resale assumption. Use written prices and actual loan and battery-contract terms where available; use local estimates for energy and other ownership costs.
