The right SUV is not the one with the biggest towing number in a brochure. It is the exact variant that can carry your passengers, accessories and luggage, tow your trailer at its actual loaded mass, and remain within its GVM, GCM, axle, towbar and coupling limits at the same time.
Use the vehicle’s model year, grade, powertrain, body, factory options and compliance information—not a rating from a similar-looking version. Then validate the planned loading with actual weighbridge measurements. The method below is designed for Australian vehicles and trailers.

Start with the exact SUV variant
Towing and payload ratings can change with model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, body style, factory options and accessories. Begin a comparison by recording those details for every candidate. A diesel automatic in one grade may not have the same kerb mass, axle ratings or GCM as a petrol, manual or higher-grade version.
Recommended Free Tools
Obtain the owner’s manual, vehicle compliance information, manufacturer technical specifications and the towbar manufacturer’s rating for that exact vehicle. Nissan’s towing guide explains that braked capacity is stated against trailer ATM, while Toyota advises checking both the owner’s manual and the vehicle compliance plate for the applicable limits.
#1 Best Overall
- Rated to 6,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and 600 lbs. tongue weight
- Engineered with a vehicle-specific design for a custom fit
- Concealed main body for OE look and seamless integration with the vehicle
- Tested for safety in accordance with SAE J684
- Precisely welded for superior strength and fit
Build a data sheet with these entries before comparing vehicles:
- Model year, grade, engine or powertrain, body and drivetrain.
- Kerb-mass definition and the equipment included in that mass.
- GVM, GCM, front-axle and rear-axle limits.
- Braked and unbraked towing capacities.
- Maximum towball download.
- Towbar and coupling ratings, including any lower limit imposed by the fitted hardware.
- Factory accessories and the mass of every accessory you intend to fit.
Do not copy a rating from an online listing for a superficially similar SUV. If the document does not identify the exact variant or the basis of its kerb mass, mark the figure as unconfirmed until the manufacturer or compliance plate resolves it.
Know what each mass rating means
These terms describe different limits. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to approve a combination that is technically overloaded.
| Term | Meaning in the towing calculation | What it includes or limits |
|---|---|---|
| GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) | The maximum permitted laden mass of the SUV. | Passengers, luggage, cargo, accessories and towball download. Nissan says the load is distributed across both axles. |
| Kerb mass | The manufacturer’s stated unladen mass used as the starting point for payload. | Definitions vary. Nissan describes kerb mass as an unladen vehicle with full fuel, excluding fitted accessories and certain tray bodies. Check the exact document. |
| Payload | Usually GVM minus the stated kerb mass. | It is not a luggage-only allowance: occupants, accessories, cargo and towball download all consume it. |
| GCM (Gross Combination Mass) | The maximum permitted laden mass of the SUV and trailer or other towed object together. | It can restrict the usable trailer mass before the advertised towing capacity is reached. |
| ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) | The trailer manufacturer’s maximum allowable loaded trailer mass. | It includes the mass imposed through the coupling and towball. Compare the trailer’s actual loaded ATM with the SUV and towbar limits. |
| GTM (Gross Trailer Mass) | The load transmitted to the ground through the trailer axles when coupled. | It is lower than ATM when part of the trailer’s mass is carried by the towball. |
| Towball download | The downward coupling load on the SUV’s towball. | It counts toward GVM and affects axle loading. It must be within the vehicle and towbar limits. |
| GAWR or axle capacity | The maximum permitted load on each axle. | Check front and rear axles separately; the rear axle often gains substantial load when a trailer is attached. |
These definitions are set out in the Nissan towing guide, Toyota’s Basic Towing Guide and Western Australia’s GVM and GCM FAQ.
Calculate usable payload, not brochure payload
The basic calculation is:
Nominal payload = GVM − the manufacturer’s kerb mass.
That result is only the starting capacity. Subtract the people and equipment that will actually travel in the SUV:
- Use the exact kerb mass for the selected variant and its stated inclusions.
- Subtract the driver and every passenger.
- Subtract bull bars, winches, roof racks, canopies, drawers, spare wheels, batteries and other fitted accessories.
- Subtract luggage, recovery gear, water, tools, food and any other cargo.
- Subtract the measured towball download from the trailer.
The remainder is the payload still available for unplanned items. Nissan defines GVM as including passengers, luggage, cargo, fitted accessories and towball download, so a towball load is not “outside” the vehicle’s payload calculation. A heavy accessory package can therefore reduce practical towing capacity even when the headline braked rating is unchanged.

- Rated to 5,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and 500 lbs. tongue weight
- Compatible with weight distribution hitch (5,000 lbs. WD / 500 lbs. WDTW)
- Engineered with a vehicle-specific design for a custom fit
- Tested for safety in accordance with SAE J684
- Precisely welded for superior strength and fit
Confirm whether the stated kerb mass includes a full fuel tank, spare wheel, standard equipment or options. Two figures labelled “kerb weight” can have different bases; subtracting either from GVM without checking its definition produces a misleading payload.
Match the trailer’s real loaded mass
Compare the trailer’s actual loaded ATM with all of these limits:
- The SUV’s braked towing capacity.
- The towbar and coupling ratings.
- The trailer manufacturer’s ATM and axle limits.
- The SUV’s GCM after the vehicle is loaded.
- The permitted towball download.
Measure download at the coupling point with the trailer loaded and the coupling at the same height it has when hitched. Toyota gives that procedure and states: “Trailer tow ball download weight must be included as part of the tow vehicle GVM.” The complete Toyota guidance is available at toyota.com.au/basic-towing-guide.
Do not apply a universal towball-percentage rule as though it were a rating. The vehicle, towbar, trailer and local requirements determine the permitted load. Follow the specific vehicle and trailer instructions, and use the lower limit where components differ.

GCM is the combined-mass ceiling. The laden SUV plus the laden trailer must remain below the exact variant’s GCM, even if each item appears to be within its own standalone rating.
Western Australia’s Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure explains that GCM “may be less than the sum of the ‘GVM’ and towing capacity of the vehicle.” In practical terms, an SUV can be at its GVM with passengers and accessories and still have less trailer capacity available than its advertised maximum. The department also notes that maximum braked capacity may be unattainable when the vehicle is loaded to GVM without exceeding GCM. Read the current state guidance at transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/vehicle/safety-standards-security/gvm-and-gcm-faqs.
Illustrative calculation
Toyota’s Basic Towing Guide gives an illustrative set of figures—not specifications for a particular ladder-frame SUV—with GVM of 2,740 kg, GCM of 4,600 kg and GTM of 2,250 kg. In that example, Toyota calculates a maximum vehicle load of 2,350 kg when the trailer is at 2,250 kg GTM, and a maximum trailer load of 1,860 kg when the vehicle is at its 2,740 kg GVM.

- 【DEPENDABLE STRENGTH】 - This 2 inch ball hitch delivers dependability for your towing setup, rated to tow 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 600 pounds tongue weight.
- 【WIDELY USED】- This trailer hitch ball comes with a 2 inch x 2 inch shank to fit virtually any industry-standard 2-inch receiver. The ball hitch also has a 2 inch drop and 0.75" rise to promote level towing with your own vehicle-trailer setup.
- 【SECURE TOWING】- Hitching up your trailer is easy with this ready-to-use ball hitch . It comes with a pre-attached 2 inch ball hitch for ready coupling and a trailer hitch pin to securely mount onto your hitch receiver.
- 【CORROSION RESISTANCE】- For long-term use, the trailer hitch is protected by a durable black powder coating, and the 2 inch ball has a polished chrome plating.
- 【EASY TO INSTALL】- Install the trailer hitch ball on your vehicle, just insert the handle to the 2 inch trailer hitch receiver of the vehicle. The 2 inch ball hitch included hitch pin and pre-torqued trailer ball to make installation easy.
Those two separate maxima cannot be stacked: 2,740 kg plus 2,250 kg would be 4,990 kg, which is 390 kg above the 4,600 kg GCM. The example demonstrates why a comparison must calculate the vehicle and trailer as one combination rather than selecting the largest number from each column.

Check both axles and the hardware
GVM compliance does not automatically prove axle compliance. Load placement, passengers, accessories and towball download can shift mass between axles. A rear axle may approach its limit before the vehicle reaches its total GVM, while a front-mounted bar or winch can consume front-axle capacity.
For each loaded option, verify:
- Front-axle load against the front GAWR.
- Rear-axle load against the rear GAWR.
- Total vehicle mass against GVM.
- Towbar rating against the trailer’s ATM and download.
- Coupling, ball and safety-chain ratings against the trailer requirements.
- Trailer axle limits and actual GTM against the trailer’s documentation.
Record the lowest applicable limit. A 3,500 kg vehicle towing rating cannot override a 2,500 kg towbar, coupling or trailer rating, and a compliant towbar cannot raise the vehicle’s GVM, GCM or axle limits.
Use measured weights to validate the plan
Manufacturer calculators and specification sheets are screening tools, not a substitute for weighing your actual setup. Ford’s Australian towing calculator calls its figures indicative and advises weighing before and after adding loads, accessories or a trailer to ensure GVM, GCM and gross axle ratings are not exceeded. Its disclaimer states: “Vehicles should be weighed before and after adding additional load, accessories or towing a trailer, to ensure the maximum Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combined Mass(GCM) and Gross Axle Weight Ratings are not exceeded.” See ford.com.au/trucks-and-vans/towing-calculator.
Toyota likewise advises individually weighing vehicles before fitting accessories, towing or relying on specified values. Arrange a weighbridge or vehicle-and-trailer weighing service that can provide axle readings, not only a single total.

- Load passengers, fuel, luggage, accessories, recovery equipment and water exactly as for the trip.
- Weigh the SUV without the trailer to obtain total mass and front- and rear-axle readings.
- Hitch the loaded trailer and weigh the combination, again recording each axle and the total.
- Measure towball download with the coupling at its normal hitched height. A towball-weight scale can help, but check its capacity and instructions; it does not establish GVM, GCM or axle compliance on its own.
- Calculate trailer ATM and GTM from the measured combination and trailer-axle readings, following the weighbridge operator’s method.
- Compare every result with the exact vehicle, towbar and trailer limits. Reposition cargo or remove load if any limit is exceeded, then reweigh.
Repeat the check after adding a canopy, larger spare, suspension accessories, roof load or other equipment. The vehicle’s measured mass—not an online calculator’s estimate—determines how much capacity remains for the trip.

| Comparison field | What to enter | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Variant identity | Year, grade, powertrain, body, drivetrain and options | Prevents ratings from another version being transferred. |
| Kerb-mass basis | Mass, fuel state and included equipment | Determines whether the payload calculation is comparable. |
| GVM and nominal payload | GVM; GVM minus stated kerb mass | Sets the vehicle’s total laden limit before real-world deductions. |
| Measured vehicle load | Passengers, accessories, cargo and towball download | Shows the payload actually consumed. |
| GCM | Manufacturer’s exact-variant GCM | Limits the combined laden SUV and trailer. |
| Braked and unbraked ratings | Manufacturer limits, with conditions | Separates trailer types and avoids using the wrong rating. |
| Trailer ATM and GTM | Actual loaded values and trailer limits | Shows the mass the SUV is really towing and the load carried by trailer axles. |
| Towball download | Measured download and vehicle/towbar maximum | Consumes payload and can load the rear axle. |
| Axle ratings | Front and rear GAWR plus measured axle loads | Finds an axle overload hidden by a compliant total GVM. |
| Towbar and coupling | Fitted hardware ratings | The lowest hardware rating governs the connection. |
| Remaining capacity | GVM, axle and GCM margins after loading | Provides a meaningful comparison for the intended trip. |
If a specification does not state a value, write “not stated” with the document and date rather than estimating it from another grade. A missing figure is a reason to obtain the compliance information, not permission to assume the highest published rating.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Australia-specific approval context
The Australian Government’s Guide to vehicle type approvals, published in March 2025, says Australian Design Rules do not require light-vehicle GCM to be certified by testing or require manufacturer evidence for it. It also says GCM is not part of the light-vehicle Register of Approved Vehicles entry, and that the department does not assess, approve or endorse manufacturers’ claimed light-vehicle GCM figures.
This statement describes the approval framework; it does not cancel the operating limits published by the vehicle manufacturer. The same guide notes that state and territory laws may impose requirements when a GCM specification is changed. Consult the exact vehicle documentation and the rules in the jurisdiction where the vehicle is registered and operated. Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
Choosing the largest advertised braked rating
Problem: The trailer rating is treated as the answer even though passengers, accessories and download leave insufficient GVM or GCM margin.
Fix: Calculate the laden SUV, laden trailer and combined mass together, then check both axles.
Calling all GVM-minus-kerb mass “luggage capacity”
Problem: Occupants, bull bars, winches, roof systems and towball load are forgotten.

Using GTM as if it were ATM
Problem: The trailer-axle load is compared with the SUV’s towing rating while the towball portion is ignored.
Fix: Compare ATM with the SUV’s towing and towbar limits, and include download in vehicle GVM.
Ignoring a lower towbar or coupling rating
Problem: The vehicle can theoretically tow more than the fitted hardware can carry.
Fix: Use the lowest applicable rating for the vehicle, towbar, coupling, ball and trailer.
Relying on an unmeasured setup
Problem: Published kerb masses and calculator results do not reflect the actual accessories, fuel, passengers or cargo.
Fix: Weigh the loaded SUV and trailer in travel configuration, obtain axle readings and reweigh after changes.
A repeatable decision rule
- Identify the exact SUV variant and collect its manual, compliance information and technical specifications.
- Record GVM, GCM, kerb-mass basis, axle ratings, braked and unbraked capacities, towball limit and hardware ratings.
- Determine the trailer’s loaded ATM, GTM and measured download for the intended trip.
- Calculate nominal payload, then deduct people, accessories, cargo and download.
- Check vehicle GVM, front and rear axle limits, trailer limits, towbar limits and combined GCM.
- Weigh the complete loaded combination and replace estimates with measured values.
- Choose the SUV that leaves a usable margin on every limit, not the one that wins a single towing-capacity column.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an SUV tow its advertised maximum trailer mass while loaded to its GVM?
Not necessarily. GCM may be lower than GVM plus the towing rating, so the combination can exceed GCM before either headline figure is reached. Calculate the laden vehicle and trailer together.
Does towball download reduce payload?
Yes. It is part of the tow vehicle’s laden mass and must be included in GVM and axle calculations.
Is a manufacturer towing calculator enough to prove compliance?
No. Calculators are indicative screening tools. Weigh the loaded SUV and trailer, including axle readings, and compare those measurements with the exact vehicle, trailer and hardware limits.
What should I do if the GCM figure is unclear?
Obtain the exact vehicle documentation and check the requirements of the registration jurisdiction. Do not substitute a figure from another grade or assume GVM plus towing capacity equals GCM.
