Compare the complete out-the-door purchase offer with personalized energy, charging, financing, maintenance, insurance, tax, and resale assumptions over the years you expect to keep the vehicle. A discount or a hybrid/EV badge does not, by itself, identify the cheaper SUV. Use the same vehicle class, equipment, model year, condition, mileage, and capability on both sides, then run low-, expected-, and high-use scenarios.
What this comparison should answer
The useful question is not whether electricity costs less than gasoline in the abstract. It is whether one specific offer leaves you with a lower total cost and a vehicle that performs the jobs you need. A discounted electric SUV can still cost more overall if its out-the-door price is high, public charging is expensive, or the ownership period is short. A conventional hybrid can use less fuel than a gasoline SUV but may not recover a price premium during low-mileage use. A gasoline SUV can be the rational choice when its purchase discount is large, charging is impractical, or the vehicle will be sold soon.

Keep two results separate: household cost and environmental impact. Energy prices, driving distance, charging access, weather, financing, and local incentives determine the first. Electricity generation, vehicle efficiency, and upstream production determine the second.

1. Define equivalent candidates before looking at the discount
Start with vehicles that serve the same job. Compare similar SUV classes and dimensions, passenger and cargo capacity, towing or all-wheel-drive capability, safety equipment, warranty coverage, and model year. A small two-row EV is not an equivalent substitute for a larger three-row gasoline SUV merely because both are called SUVs.

Record the offer, not the advertised price
Ask each seller for a written buyer’s order. Record the negotiated out-the-door amount, including destination charges, documentation fees, taxes, registration, and mandatory accessories. Keep these items visible:
- Cash price and every dealer or manufacturer discount.
- Whether a discount requires financing, a trade-in, military or membership eligibility, or another condition.
- Cash due at signing, trade-in allowance and payoff, APR, loan term, and total finance charge.
- Vehicle identification number, condition, mileage, model year, trim, options, and delivery date.
- Any advertised price that excludes taxes, fees, transportation, or dealer-installed equipment.
Do not subtract a tax credit from a listing price until you have confirmed eligibility, acquisition date, income limits, vehicle requirements, and how the credit is delivered. Treat an incentive as a separate line in the worksheet so a conditional discount cannot be mistaken for a permanent price reduction.

2. Choose an ownership horizon and realistic driving profile
Use the miles you actually expect to drive and the number of years you expect to keep the SUV. Do not use a universal “payback period.” A driver covering 5,000 miles a year accumulates energy savings slowly; a 25,000-mile driver accumulates them faster. The correct break-even point depends on the purchase-price gap and the buyer’s rates and efficiencies.
Run three mileage cases
- Low: commuting, errands, and vacations at the lower end of your plausible range.
- Expected: your best estimate from calendar, odometer, or fuel records.
- High: a job change, longer commute, frequent road trips, or family use.
Apply the same annual-mile assumptions to every candidate. Add a separate resale estimate only when you have credible, vehicle-specific evidence; the official calculator described below does not establish a future resale value for a particular SUV.
Separate vehicle fit from financial fit
First ask whether the candidate can complete normal days and regular long trips. Then calculate cost. A vehicle that requires inconvenient charging stops, cannot carry your passengers, or cannot tow the needed load is not an economical substitute even if its spreadsheet total is lower.
3. Convert energy use into a buyer-specific cost
Gasoline MPG, MPGe, and kWh per 100 miles describe different things. Use gasoline prices with gasoline consumption and electricity rates with electricity consumption. MPGe is an energy-equivalence value, not the amount that will appear on your electric bill.
Gasoline SUV
Estimate annual gallons as:
annual miles ÷ combined MPG = gallons per year
Then calculate:
gallons per year × local gasoline price = annual gasoline cost

Conventional hybrid
Use the hybrid’s gasoline MPG in the same formula. Regenerative braking and electric assistance can reduce fuel use in stop-and-go driving, but the vehicle still buys gasoline for every mile unless it is a plug-in model. Compare the hybrid’s actual out-the-door premium with its estimated fuel savings; do not assume the badge guarantees a lower total cost.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
Split miles into electric and gasoline portions. For electric miles:
electric miles × kWh per mile × effective electricity rate = electric cost

For the remaining miles:
gasoline miles ÷ gasoline MPG × gasoline price = gasoline cost
Do not count every mile as electric unless your charging routine and trip pattern support that assumption. Some PHEVs run almost entirely on electricity until the battery is depleted; others blend electricity and gasoline. Use the operating behavior and electric range of the exact model. Include gasoline for long trips after the battery’s usable range is consumed.
Battery-electric SUV
Use the vehicle’s electricity consumption, normally expressed as kWh per 100 miles:
annual miles × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100 = annual kWh
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →annual kWh × effective electricity rate = annual charging cost
Your effective rate should reflect the share charged at home, at work, and at public stations. Add charging losses when you have a reliable figure; a wall-meter reading or utility bill is better than assuming the dashboard number equals electricity purchased. Include per-session public charging fees and idle or membership fees when they apply.
Illustrative calculation
This example demonstrates the method, not a market quote. Suppose two otherwise comparable SUVs are driven 15,000 miles per year. One gasoline SUV is rated at 25 MPG. A battery-electric SUV uses 34 kWh per 100 miles. If gasoline is $3.50 per gallon and the EV’s blended charging rate is $0.22 per kWh, the estimates are:
- Gasoline SUV: 15,000 ÷ 25 = 600 gallons; 600 × $3.50 = $2,100 per year.
- EV: 15,000 × 34 ÷ 100 = 5,100 kWh; 5,100 × $0.22 = $1,122 per year.
The $978 difference is not a universal saving. Change the miles, MPG, electricity mix, gasoline price, public-charging share, or efficiency and the result changes. The purchase-price difference, financing, insurance, maintenance, tires, charging installation, taxes, and resale still have to be added.
4. Read EPA labels without mixing unlike measures
EPA labels provide model-specific fuel economy, electric consumption, estimated annual fuel cost, range, and charging information. The annual fuel-cost estimate assumes 15,000 miles per year and projected fuel prices; EPA says buyers should personalize costs through FuelEconomy.gov and related comparison tools. Treat the 15,000-mile figure as an agency assumption, not your mileage.
EPA’s guidance explains that consumption per distance can be more useful than MPG for cost comparisons because MPG changes do not translate linearly into gallons saved. A vehicle improving from 15 to 20 MPG saves more fuel per mile than one improving from 30 to 35 MPG, even though both show a five-MPG increase.
For plug-in vehicles, inspect both electric-mode and gasoline-mode values. MPGe expresses the energy equivalent of gasoline and electricity so powertrains can appear on one label; it does not tell you your utility bill. Use kWh per 100 miles and your charging rates for the EV portion, then gasoline MPG and gasoline price for the rest.

EPA states: “Note: The EPA estimates, including EV range, are meant to be a general guideline for consumers when comparing vehicles.” Weather, speed, heating, air conditioning, payload, tire pressure, and terrain can move real-world consumption away from the label.
5. Check range, weather and charging fit
Daily and weekly routes
List your normal daily miles, longest routine day, regular highway trips, and destinations where you can charge. Compare usable range with those routes rather than relying on a single label number. Leave a buffer for detours, traffic, cold weather, and degraded battery capacity.
Cold weather and accessory loads
EPA identifies cold temperatures, heating and air-conditioning use, and high-speed driving as factors that can reduce EV range. If you regularly drive in winter, climb hills, carry heavy loads, or travel at highway speeds, test the route with a conservative range assumption. A vehicle that works in mild-weather commuting may need charging stops in winter.
Home, workplace and public charging
Confirm where charging will occur before buying. Ask an electrician for a site-specific quote if you need a 240-volt circuit, panel upgrade, wiring, permits, or a wall-mounted unit. EPA charge-time figures for vehicles capable of receiving 240-volt service are based on that supply; a lower-voltage household outlet takes longer. Installation and equipment costs are household-specific, not standard vehicle costs.
For public charging, map the stations on your regular routes and verify connector compatibility, access hours, payment method, reliability, and posted pricing. Model the rate you actually expect to pay rather than a residential utility rate if most charging will be public.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePHEV charging reality
A PHEV delivers its strongest fuel-saving case when it is charged regularly and most daily travel fits within its electric range. If you cannot charge at home or work, treat it more like a gasoline hybrid and retain gasoline costs for nearly all travel. Confirm whether the model blends gasoline into operation under acceleration, cold conditions, or sustained highway driving.
6. Add ownership costs that energy math misses
Build a total-cost estimate with current quotes for both candidates. Include:
- Financing interest, loan term, and the effect of a larger down payment.
- Insurance premiums for the same driver, address, coverage, and deductible.
- Registration, local taxes, inspection fees, and recurring annual charges.
- Scheduled maintenance, likely repairs, tires, and wear items.
- Home charging equipment, electrical work, permits, and any workplace or public-charging fees.
- Expected resale proceeds or depreciation, if supported by credible vehicle-specific estimates.
The available official sources do not establish comparable insurance, maintenance, financing, tire, registration, or installation prices for particular SUVs. Obtain quotes instead of assuming that one powertrain is automatically cheaper in every category. Keep one-time and recurring costs separate so you can see which assumption drives the result.
7. Handle federal and local incentives carefully
According to current IRS guidance accessed October 13, 2026, federal new, previously owned, and commercial clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle acquired by that date may still qualify if placed in service later, subject to the applicable transition rules. Do not include a federal credit in a 2026 purchase calculation unless your acquisition timing and eligibility satisfy those rules.
Recommended Free Tools
State, local, utility, workplace, and charging programs vary by registration address, household eligibility, vehicle location, funding, and installation requirements. Verify the program directly and record its expiration date and payment timing. Show incentives in a separate worksheet column: gross price, conditional discount, verified credit, and net price should never be collapsed into one unexplained number.
8. Use official comparison tools as a check
DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center Vehicle Cost Calculator compares purchase and operating costs and emissions for listed makes and models, up to eight candidates, or custom vehicles. It accepts purchase price, fuel economy or electricity consumption, range, driving habits, and a selected state used to obtain electricity-price information. Enter your actual offer and mileage instead of accepting defaults. Use custom vehicles when the exact trim, used condition, or negotiated price is not represented.

FuelEconomy.gov and EPA label information
Use the exact model year, drivetrain, wheel configuration, and trim where available. Check gasoline MPG, electric kWh consumption, MPGe, range, charge time, and the assumptions behind annual fuel-cost estimates. The EPA comparison tools are useful for consistent ratings; your spreadsheet is where local prices, charging mix, financing, and ownership period belong.
EPA emissions comparison
EPA’s vehicle-versus-EV comparison is an emissions resource, not a personalized ownership-cost result. Its illustrative typical-EV input is 39 kWh per 100 miles, based on the 2025 median EV energy consumption, and it uses national-average electricity CO₂ emissions from eGRID 2023. The comparison includes upstream as well as tailpipe emissions. EPA notes, “The results presented are estimates.” Do not apply that single figure to every EV, electricity grid, or driving pattern.
9. Present the result in an auditable table
Anyone reviewing your decision should be able to change one assumption and see what moves. Use a table like this and attach the source and date for every volatile input:
| Category | Gasoline SUV | Hybrid/PHEV/EV |
|---|---|---|
| Exact vehicle and condition | Year, trim, miles, equipment | Year, trim, miles, equipment |
| Out-the-door price | Amount and seller quote date | Amount and seller quote date |
| Discount conditions | Cash, financing or trade-in requirements | Cash, financing or trade-in requirements |
| Annual miles | Low / expected / high | Low / expected / high |
| Energy assumptions | MPG and gasoline price | kWh/100 miles, MPG, charging mix and rates |
| Annual energy cost | Calculated gallons × price | Electric and gasoline portions |
| Charging and installation | None or not applicable | Quote, equipment and public fees |
| Financing | APR, term and finance charge | APR, term and finance charge |
| Insurance, maintenance and tires | Current quotes or stated estimates | Current quotes or stated estimates |
| Taxes and incentives | Verified amounts and dates | Verified amounts and dates |
| Ownership period | Years and resale assumption | Years and resale assumption |
| Total estimated cost | Purchase plus ownership costs minus verified proceeds | Purchase plus ownership costs minus verified proceeds |
Calculate totals for the low, expected, and high cases. Change one variable at a time for sensitivity tests: annual miles, gasoline price, electricity rate, public-charging share, ownership years, and installation cost. If the preferred vehicle changes when a reasonable assumption moves, report a close decision rather than claiming a universal winner.
10. Find the break-even point without overpromising
Let the hybrid or EV’s extra initial cost be price premium. Estimate annual savings as the gasoline SUV’s annual energy cost minus the alternative’s annual energy cost, then calculate:
simple energy break-even years = price premium ÷ annual energy savings

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is only a screening calculation. Add financing interest, charging installation, maintenance, insurance, taxes, incentives, and resale before making a purchase decision. If annual energy savings are zero or negative, there is no energy-only payback. If the ownership horizon is shorter than the full-cost break-even period, the cheaper purchase offer may remain cheaper overall.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing a discounted listing price with an out-the-door price
Problem: The advertised number excludes taxes, fees, accessories, or required financing.
Fix: Compare written buyer’s orders with identical fee treatment and record conditional discounts separately.
Using MPGe as an electricity-bill estimate
Problem: MPGe is treated as dollars per mile.
Fix: Use kWh per 100 miles, your charging mix, and actual rates for electric operation.

Counting every PHEV mile as electric
Problem: The calculation assumes charging that will not occur or ignores gasoline use after battery depletion.

Decision checklist
- Confirm both vehicles perform the same passenger, cargo, towing, weather, and trip duties.
- Obtain written out-the-door offers and identify every discount condition.
- Record annual miles, ownership years, financing, trade-in treatment, and expected resale.
- Calculate gasoline, hybrid, PHEV, or EV energy costs with local prices and realistic efficiency.
- For plug-in vehicles, verify home, workplace, and public charging, installation, connector, and route requirements.
- Model cold-weather, high-speed, and accessory-related range or efficiency changes.
- Add insurance, maintenance, tires, registration, taxes, financing, and charging costs using current quotes.
- Verify federal, state, local, and utility incentives and their dates; do not assume a credit applies.
- Run low, expected, and high scenarios and identify which assumption changes the result.
- Choose the vehicle that fits the job and has the lower credible total cost over your actual ownership period.
Bottom line
A discounted hybrid or EV is cheaper to own only when its complete offer and operating pattern beat the gasoline SUV you would otherwise buy. Compare equivalent vehicles, use gasoline MPG and electricity consumption correctly, test charging and range against real routes, and include every buyer-specific cost. The result is a personal calculation—not a conclusion that follows from the powertrain label or discount alone.
