A garden hose is often the gentler starting point; use a pressure washer only if your vehicle’s owner manual and the washer’s instructions allow it. Keep the stream moving, avoid vulnerable components, and don’t assume one pressure setting or cleaning schedule suits every car.
What you need to know before washing underneath
Road salt, mud and retained moisture beneath a vehicle are corrosion concerns, but washing is not a guarantee against rust. Manufacturer instructions vary by model and market, so check your owner’s manual before using a pressure washer or applying a cleaner.
- A garden hose or suitable water stream can rinse loose dirt and salt from accessible areas.
- Pressure-washer limits, required distance and restricted areas depend on the vehicle and equipment instructions. There is no universal PSI or nozzle distance to use.
- Do not crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. This process is for rinsing from outside the vehicle, not working underneath it.
- Follow local rules for washing vehicles and managing wash water. Renault, for example, cautions against washing on a public highway.
How to clean your car’s undercarriage
1. Check the owner’s manual and choose a suitable location
Look for the vehicle’s exterior-care or washing guidance, including any underbody restrictions and directions for pressure washing. Check the washer’s manual too if you plan to use one. Choose a lawful place where water can drain appropriately, and do not get beneath a vehicle that is supported only by a jack.
2. Turn the vehicle off and let hot parts cool
Keep the vehicle switched off and allow hot components to cool before rinsing. Work from outside the vehicle and do not reach into areas that may be hot, moving or sharp.

3. Rinse loose dirt and salt with water
Start with a garden hose or other suitable water stream, if the owner’s manual permits it. Rinse accessible areas beneath the car and inside the wheel wells to loosen dirt and wash away salt. Nissan’s 2024 UK X-Trail manual recommends spraying the underbody and wheel wells for this purpose: Nissan X-Trail owner manual: Washing.
4. Use a pressure washer only when instructions permit
A pressure washer can help with accumulated mud in some situations, but it is not automatically safe for every vehicle. Use only the nozzle, pressure and distance specified by both the vehicle and equipment makers. Keep the spray moving rather than concentrating it on one spot. Avoid close-range jets on vulnerable boots, electrical connections, sensors, damaged areas or any components the manual says to protect.

Guidance differs: Ford’s 2025 New Zealand Escape owner information says to flush the underside frequently and discusses more thorough cleaning of suspension and steering parts in dusty or muddy service. Nissan cautions owners to follow pressure-washer equipment recommendations, while Renault warns against unapproved high-pressure cleaning or degreasing on the underbody. Consult the instructions for your own vehicle rather than transferring one model’s advice to another.
5. Skip cleaners unless a compatible product is needed
Clean water is the sensible default for routine salt and loose dirt. Don’t apply an unapproved degreaser or chemical cleaner to underbody components; Renault warns against unapproved products there, and Nissan cautions against strong chemical detergents for vehicle washing. If a particular contaminant needs more than water, use a product approved for the vehicle and the affected component.

6. Let water drain and make a visual check
Allow water to run off, then check accessible areas from outside the vehicle. Keep body and door drain holes clear of packed dirt, as Ford advises. Do not reach into hot, sharp or moving areas, and do not crawl under an unsupported vehicle to inspect the result.
How often should you rinse the undercarriage?
Frequency depends on exposure and the vehicle’s instructions. Rinse regularly when the car encounters road salt, and after muddy or off-road driving. Hyundai’s 2025 US owner manual recommends hosing off the underside at least monthly in high-corrosion areas and cleaning it thoroughly when winter is over. That is Hyundai’s guidance for the conditions described, not a universal schedule; check the manual for your model. Ford also recommends frequent underbody flushing and identifies dusty or muddy use as a reason suspension and steering parts may need more thorough cleaning.

Hose, pressure washer or undercarriage attachment?
Choose the method that fits the vehicle manual, gives you control over the spray, reaches the areas you need to rinse and can be used safely without crawling beneath the car. Local wash-water rules also matter. The options below are practical considerations, not a manufacturer ranking.
| Option | Useful for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Garden hose | Routine rinsing of loose dirt and salt | Use a suitable stream and follow the vehicle manual. It may be less effective on accumulated mud than a permitted pressure washer. |
| Pressure washer | Accumulated mud, when vehicle and equipment instructions allow it | Follow the specified pressure, nozzle and distance. Keep the spray moving and avoid vulnerable or restricted components. |
| Undercarriage washer attachment | Directing water beneath the car from outside | Optional, not required by the manufacturer guidance cited here. Compatibility and safe use still depend on the vehicle and washer instructions. |
For a broader exterior wash, Nissan recommends mild or pH-neutral vehicle detergent and warns against strong household soap, chemical detergents, petrol and solvents. That advice does not mean shampoo is needed to rinse salt from the underside.
