Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYour car’s automatic emergency braking (AEB) system uses sensors to track what is ahead, estimates whether a collision is imminent, and may brake if you do not react—or add braking force if you brake too lightly. It can help avoid or reduce the severity of some crashes, but it cannot guarantee a stop in every situation.
How automatic emergency braking works
AEB is a chain of sensing, risk assessment and braking—not a single sensor that decides to stop the car. The exact sensors, warnings and intervention logic vary by vehicle, so the owner’s manual is the best source for how a particular make, model and year behaves.
1. Sensors track the road ahead
Forward-facing systems may use radar, cameras, lidar or other sensor technologies to detect and track vehicles, pedestrians or other objects. The sensor mix is vehicle-specific; not every car uses lidar, and systems do not all detect the same targets in the same way. NHTSA describes AEB as a coordinated set of sensor technologies and subsystems: NHTSA’s AEB overview and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s final-rule summary.
2. Software assesses the collision risk
The vehicle’s control system interprets sensor information and assesses whether it is approaching a potential collision. NHTSA describes the system as identifying a crash-imminent situation. There is no single universal AEB algorithm or threshold established for every vehicle; the decision logic and operating conditions differ among systems.

3. The car may warn you and prepare the brakes
Many front crash prevention systems alert the driver and precharge the brakes to help maximize braking effect. The warning—such as a visual or audible alert—and whether brake preparation occurs depend on the vehicle.
4. The system may supplement or apply the brakes
If you respond by braking but do not press hard enough, dynamic brake support can increase braking effort. If you do not respond, crash imminent braking can automatically apply the brakes. Depending on the situation, this may prevent impact or reduce its severity.

AEB is different from a collision warning
Forward collision warning (FCW) alerts the driver to a potential frontal crash; by itself, it does not apply the brakes. AEB refers to the braking intervention. Some systems combine FCW with AEB, but a warning feature alone should not be mistaken for automatic braking. IIHS reports that systems combining FCW and automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half; that finding is not a result for every AEB-equipped vehicle. See the IIHS Advanced Driver Assistance Systems topic page.
What AEB can detect—and what it cannot promise
Vehicle AEB systems are designed for defined detection scenarios. Pedestrian AEB uses forward sensor information to identify a pedestrian in the vehicle’s path and can brake if a collision is imminent. A system’s ability to recognize a target does not mean the car can always stop before reaching it: available braking distance and conditions matter, and capabilities differ by vehicle.

- There is no universal stopping distance or speed threshold that applies to every AEB system.
- The available evidence does not support a claim that every system detects every obstacle, cyclist or animal.
- Performance in one specified test scenario does not guarantee the same response in all real-world road, weather or target conditions.
- For the behavior of your car, consult its owner’s manual and manufacturer information for the exact model year.
What the U.S. AEB rule requires
On April 29, 2024, NHTSA finalized Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 127 for automatic emergency braking, including pedestrian AEB, on passenger cars and light trucks. NHTSA’s announcement says new vehicles must meet the standard by September 2029. These are U.S. federal requirements, not a rule for every country.
In the rule’s specified test context, systems must stop to avoid contact with a lead vehicle at speeds up to 62 mph, automatically brake for an imminent lead-vehicle collision at speeds up to 90 mph, and brake for pedestrian collisions at speeds up to 45 mph. These are performance requirements under defined conditions—not a promise that a car will stop in every real-world encounter at those speeds. NHTSA projected the standard would save at least 360 lives and prevent at least 24,000 injuries annually; those figures are projections, not observed annual results. Read the NHTSA announcement and rule overview for the agency’s description.

Stay responsible for driving
NHTSA classifies AEB as Level 0 momentary driver assistance: the driver remains responsible for driving and monitoring. Do not rely on AEB instead of paying attention, and do not test it in traffic. AEB is an aid for certain crash situations, not a substitute for control of the vehicle.
