1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse your vehicle’s exact owner manual before touching an ADAS sensor. Identify each camera, radar unit, ultrasonic parking sensor and its cover, then clean only the surfaces the manual permits with a clean, soft cloth and the specified water or cleaner. Never press, strike, pry, scrape, pressure-wash, paint, cover or try to realign a sensor. A clean surface does not prove that a sensor is aligned or working; an impact or qualifying bumper, grille, windshield or body repair may require inspection or calibration.
What you are cleaning: ADAS sensors are not interchangeable
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) combine different sensors, each with its own location, cover and cleaning limits. A camera may sit behind the windshield near the rear-view mirror, in a grille, or at the front or rear of the vehicle. Radar may be mounted behind a bumper or grille cover, while ultrasonic sensors are usually the small round units distributed across a bumper for parking assistance. Some vehicles also use side or rear cameras.

Do not assume that a method safe for one sensor is safe for another. The owner manuals cited here show meaningful differences in water temperature, detergents, pressure-washing restrictions and post-repair requirements. Instructions can also change by model year, trim, market and sensor package. Find the manual for your exact vehicle before cleaning.

- Record the vehicle identity. Note the make, model, model year, trim and market. A manual for a similar-looking vehicle may describe different hardware.
- Use the manual’s sensor diagram. Locate windshield cameras, front and corner radar, ultrasonic parking sensors and any other ADAS equipment. Some radar units are hidden behind painted or textured covers, so do not remove a cover merely to find the sensor.
- Open the cleaning section for that system. Check whether the manual permits owner cleaning, which cloth or water it specifies, whether a detergent is allowed, and what areas must remain unobstructed.
- Check for a recent event. If the vehicle has been hit, had a bumper, grille, windshield or body panel repaired, or had a sensor removed or replaced, stop and check the service requirements before attempting to restore operation.
- Park safely. Turn the vehicle off, choose a stable location and let hot surfaces cool. Never clean a sensor while traffic conditions require you to move the vehicle.
Keep the manual open while working. If its instructions conflict with a generic cleaning suggestion, the vehicle manual controls.

What materials are generally appropriate—and what is not
Where the manual allows owner cleaning, the common requirement is a clean, soft cloth with minimal, gentle contact. A plain microfiber cloth is a practical example, but no particular brand or cloth is required. Use a separate clean area of the cloth for each surface so grit removed from a bumper does not get dragged across a lens.
- Water: Use only the temperature and amount specified. Ford’s cited guidance allows lukewarm or cold water with a soft cloth for cameras and sensors. That does not make hot water or a strong spray universally safe.
- Detergent: Use a cleaner only when the manual names one. Hyundai specifies mild soap or neutral detergent for camera lenses and warns against acidic or alkaline detergents. Toyota warns that glass cleaner must not contact the front-camera lens when cleaning the inside of the windshield. Tesla warns against chemical-based or abrasive cleaners.
- Contact: Wipe lightly. Do not push on a sensor face, rotate a housing or use pressure to remove a stubborn spot.
- Tools to avoid: Do not use blades, picks, abrasive pads, hard brushes or any sharp object. Do not scrape a frozen deposit from a lens or ultrasonic sensor.
If the manual does not state that a product is safe, do not apply it to the sensor. A household glass cleaner that is acceptable for ordinary glass can be unsuitable for a coated camera lens or a sensor cover.
How to clean ADAS cameras, radar covers and parking sensors
1. Remove loose contamination without rubbing it across a lens
Look for dust, mud, salt, insects, ice, snow, road film and standing water. On an exposed lens, first follow the manual’s method for loosening contamination. Tesla’s Model S guidance specifically warns that rubbing debris across an exposed lens can damage it and prohibits sharp or abrasive objects on ultrasonic sensors or camera lenses. If a deposit will not release with the permitted gentle method, stop rather than increasing force.

2. Clean the windshield area around a forward-facing camera
Many forward cameras view through a defined windshield area. Clean the exterior and interior glass only as the manual permits, and keep stickers, toll tags, dash-camera mounts and other objects out of the camera’s field. Toyota’s 2024 bZ4X manual warns against allowing glass cleaner to contact the front-camera lens while cleaning the inside of the windshield. Apply any interior glass product to a cloth away from the camera area, and follow the manual’s boundaries instead of spraying toward the lens.
3. Wipe an owner-serviceable radar surface or cover
Radar may be behind a grille or bumper cover, so clean the exterior surface identified by the manual rather than trying to reach the radar module. Toyota directs owners to use a soft cloth for dirt on radar sensors and covers. Kia likewise directs soft-cloth cleaning around its front radar. Keep the cloth clean and use only light passes; do not push a cover inward or attempt to change its angle.

4. Clean ultrasonic parking sensors individually
Ultrasonic sensors are commonly the small circular units in a bumper. Clean only the exposed face and the surrounding area the manual identifies. Hyundai warns against directly spraying ultrasonic sensors and nearby areas with high-pressure water. Never insert a tool into the gap around a sensor or try to reseat a loose-looking unit by hand.
5. Rinse or dry only as directed
When a manual permits water, use the stated temperature and a soft cloth. Ford’s cited page specifies lukewarm or cold water for camera lenses and sensors and says not to pressure-wash them. Kia also warns against spraying pressurized water directly at its radar sensor or cover. Do not convert a permitted damp-cloth wipe into a hose or pressure-washer blast.
6. Remove residue and leave the field clear
Use a clean portion of the cloth for a final gentle pass if the manual permits it. Check that no soap film, water bead, snow, ice or loose fiber remains in the sensor’s field. Do not apply wax, paint, film, bumper guards or other coatings to a sensor cover unless the automaker expressly approves that product and location.
Can you pressure-wash your car’s sensors?
Do not direct a pressure washer at a camera, radar sensor, ultrasonic sensor or its cover. Ford says not to pressure-wash camera lenses and sensors. Kia warns against spraying pressurized water directly onto the front radar sensor or cover, and Hyundai warns against high-pressure water on ultrasonic sensors and nearby areas. The risk is not limited to visible damage: water intrusion, disturbed covers or altered mounting can affect operation.
A normal vehicle wash does not automatically mean every sensor has been treated safely. Keep the nozzle away from sensor locations and use the manual’s permitted cloth-and-water method for any remaining contamination. If a wash has already been directed at a sensor and a warning appears, inspect visually without touching the unit and follow the troubleshooting and service instructions for the vehicle.

Inspection after cleaning: what you can check and what you must not adjust
Cleaning is a visual maintenance task, not a calibration procedure. With the vehicle safely parked, look for:
- Remaining mud, snow, ice, salt, water droplets or detergent film on a camera lens, radar cover or ultrasonic sensor.
- Cracks, deep scratches, clouding, broken mounts or a cover that is loose, displaced or visibly damaged.
- Damage to the nearby bumper, grille, windshield, mirror housing or body panel.
- Stickers, film, license-plate frames, bumper guards, paint, wraps or accessories intruding into a sensor’s field.
- A sensor that appears recessed, tilted or pushed inward compared with the surrounding units.
Do not press on a sensor to test it, push it back into position, loosen fasteners, remove a cover or attempt to aim the unit. Hyundai and Kia both warn that an impact can impair sensor operation even when no dashboard warning is displayed. A clean, intact-looking exterior cannot confirm alignment, internal damage or correct software operation.
What different owner manuals require
The following examples illustrate why a universal cleaning recipe is unsafe. They apply to the cited manuals and pages, not automatically to every vehicle from those manufacturers.
| Manual or page | Cleaning direction | Water and pressure limits | Chemical or modification warnings | Inspection or service examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota 2024 bZ4X Owner’s Manual, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (United States) | Use a soft cloth for dirt on radar sensors and covers. | The cited excerpt does not establish a universal water temperature; follow the vehicle procedure. | Do not let glass cleaner contact the front-camera lens when cleaning the inside of the windshield. Keep relevant areas unobstructed. | Radar removal, reinstallation or replacement, and front bumper or grille replacement are identified calibration triggers in this manual. |
| Ford “Cleaning Cameras, Radars and Sensors” owner-manual page (United States model variant) | Use a soft cloth for camera lenses and sensors. | Use lukewarm or cold water; do not pressure-wash cameras or sensors. | Keep sensor fields clear and follow the exact model procedure. | Sensor or bumper removal, replacement or installation requires radar service according to the cited page. |
| Kia 2025 owner-manual page, “Detecting sensor” (United States) | Use a soft cloth around the front radar. | Do not spray pressurized water directly at the radar sensor or cover. | Do not place accessories or other obstructions where they can interfere with detection. | Impact or damage can affect radar operation even without an obvious warning; arrange inspection when indicated by the manual. |
| Hyundai 2026 owner-manual page, “Driver assistance system sensors” (United States) | For camera lenses, use mild soap or neutral detergent when the manual calls for cleaning. | Do not directly spray ultrasonic sensors or nearby areas with high-pressure water. | Do not use acidic or alkaline detergents; keep sensor areas free of obstruction or unapproved modifications. | Specified impacts or alignment concerns require inspection by an authorized dealer; impact can impair operation without a dashboard warning. |
| Tesla Model S owner-manual excerpt in an NHTSA ODI filing | Avoid rubbing debris across an exposed lens; use no sharp or abrasive object on a camera lens or ultrasonic sensor. | The cited excerpt emphasizes avoiding damaging cleaning methods; confirm the procedure for the exact Tesla model and year. | Avoid chemical-based or abrasive cleaners. | The manual warns that driver assistance has limitations and does not replace attentive control. |

- A sensor or sensor cover was struck, cracked, displaced or removed.
- The front or rear bumper, grille, fascia, windshield or nearby bodywork was removed, replaced, painted or repaired.
- A camera, radar unit or ultrasonic sensor was disconnected, replaced or reinstalled.
- The vehicle shows a persistent blocked-sensor, unavailable-system or driver-assistance fault after the permitted surface cleaning.
- The sensor appears misaligned, even if the vehicle does not display a warning.
Requirements differ by vehicle. In the cited 2024 bZ4X manual, radar removal or replacement and front bumper or grille replacement call for radar recalibration. Ford’s cited guidance says sensor or bumper removal, replacement or installation requires radar service. Hyundai directs owners to have specified impact or alignment concerns inspected by an authorized dealer. These are examples, not a universal list of calibration triggers.
What to do when the vehicle says a sensor is blocked
- Read the exact warning. Record which system is unavailable and consult the troubleshooting section for the vehicle.
- Park safely and inspect. Look for snow, ice, mud, water, dirt, a cover obstruction or an accessory in the relevant field.
- Clean only the permitted surface. Use the manual’s cloth, water and detergent instructions. Do not pressure-wash, scrape or disassemble anything.
- Allow conditions to clear. Heavy rain, snow, spray, condensation or glare may temporarily limit a system; follow the manual’s operating guidance rather than forcing a test.
- Recheck the message as directed. If the warning remains after the surface is clean and conditions are suitable, arrange service. Cleaning cannot repair a damaged sensor or establish calibration.
Do not use the disappearance of a warning as proof that alignment is correct. Conversely, do not assume a sensor is safe merely because no warning appeared after an impact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accessories and modifications that can obstruct detection
Keep the camera’s windshield view and radar or ultrasonic fields free from unapproved objects. Examples include stickers, license-plate frames, film, wraps, bumper guards, decorative covers, paint and aftermarket brackets. Even if an accessory does not touch the sensor, it can block part of the field or alter the surface through which the system operates. The cited Toyota, Ford, Kia and Hyundai guidance all emphasizes keeping relevant sensor areas unobstructed or unmodified unless the automaker approves the change.
Ask the body shop how it handled sensor covers and mounting points after collision or cosmetic work. A panel that looks straight may still place a radar unit or camera outside its intended position. Request the vehicle-specific inspection or calibration procedure rather than accepting a generic “looks fine” assessment.

ADAS features can be limited by contamination, weather, road conditions, damaged hardware or system boundaries. They do not make the vehicle self-driving. The Tesla Model S Owner’s Manual states: “It is the driver’s responsibility to stay alert, drive safely, and be in control of the vehicle at all times.” Continue to monitor traffic, keep your hands and attention where the vehicle manual requires, and do not rely on a recently cleaned sensor until the system reports normal operation and you have followed any required service instructions.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Using one cleaning recipe for every sensor | Camera lenses, radar covers and ultrasonic sensors have different materials and instructions. | Identify the sensor and follow that vehicle’s manual. |
| Blasting a bumper with a pressure washer | High-pressure water can affect sensor covers or nearby components; several cited manuals prohibit direct spray. | Keep the nozzle away and use a permitted soft-cloth method. |
| Scraping ice or dried mud with a blade | Sharp or abrasive contact can scratch or damage a lens or sensor face. | Use only the manual-approved gentle method; stop if contamination will not release. |
| Spraying glass cleaner toward a camera | Some manuals prohibit chemical contact with camera lenses. | Apply products only as the exact manual directs, away from prohibited lens areas. |
| Pushing a sensor back after a minor bump | Manual alignment can be lost, and internal damage may not be visible. | Leave it untouched and obtain inspection or calibration guidance. |
| Adding a protective film or bumper accessory | The material or shape can obstruct or alter the sensor field. | Use only an automaker-approved modification for that location. |
| Assuming no warning means no damage | Hyundai and Kia warn that impact may impair operation without a dashboard warning. | Have a struck or displaced sensor inspected regardless of warning status. |
Key questions answered
How do I clean ADAS sensors without damaging them?
Locate each sensor in the exact owner manual, then use only the permitted clean soft cloth, water and detergent with gentle contact. Do not scrape, press, spray at high pressure, apply unapproved chemicals or attempt alignment.
Can I pressure-wash my car’s sensors?
Do not direct a pressure washer at them. Ford, Kia and Hyundai specifically warn against direct high-pressure water in the cited instructions.
Does a bumper repair mean my radar needs calibration?
It can. The cited Toyota manual identifies front bumper or grille replacement as a radar-calibration trigger, and Ford says sensor or bumper removal, replacement or installation requires radar service. Check the exact vehicle procedure after any qualifying repair.
What if the sensor looks clean but the warning remains?
Follow the manual’s blocked-sensor troubleshooting. If the warning persists after permitted cleaning and suitable conditions, arrange service; a clean surface does not repair damage or prove calibration.
