Start with the current owner’s manual—not a generic “touring Harley” label—then set the tires to the manual’s cold-pressure specification and keep the complete rider, passenger and cargo load within the motorcycle’s limits.
Harley-Davidson warns that a tire not specified for the motorcycle can affect stability, handling or braking. The company recommends using tires in the original-equipment size, speed rating, load rating and construction. That makes fitment and load capacity more important than choosing a tread by appearance or assuming that every tire for a large touring model will interchange.

Why a heavy touring Harley needs exact tire matching
Touring motorcycles place substantial, changing loads on both tires. The motorcycle, rider, passenger, luggage, accessories and riding gear all contribute to the load the tires and chassis must support. A tire that fits the rim physically can still be wrong for the motorcycle if its size, construction, load index or speed rating differs from the specification.

Even within the touring range, one model may use a 17-inch front wheel while another uses a 19-inch front, and rear sizes can differ as well. Confirm the specification for the motorcycle’s market and equipment rather than relying on a tire listing that says only “fits Harley touring models.”

Step 1: Identify the exact motorcycle and position
Record the information before shopping
Write down these details from the motorcycle and its current documentation:
- Model name and model year, including any trim or special version.
- Front or rear position. Front and rear tires are not interchangeable simply because their diameters look similar.
- Wheel diameter and the complete size marking.
- Required tire construction, such as the construction designation shown in the manual and on the sidewall.
- Minimum load rating and speed rating.
- Market or regional version, if the motorcycle was imported or has documentation from another country.
Use the current owner’s manual for the exact motorcycle. Harley-Davidson’s indexed 2025 manual material corroborates the need to check the applicable manual, but an indexed excerpt is not a substitute for the complete manual page or the specification label on your motorcycle.
Do not infer fitment from the word “touring”
Harley-Davidson’s touring specification material lists different combinations of front and rear sizes. A tire approved for one model group may not be approved for another, even when both motorcycles are large touring machines. The 2019 replacement guide also lists model-year-specific applications and cautions against non-approved tires or mixing approved tires from different manufacturers on one motorcycle.
How to read the tire sidewall
The sidewall is a second check against an ordering mistake. It carries the tire size, wheel diameter, load rating and manufacture-date information. Compare every marking with the owner’s manual and with the tire currently installed.
Size and wheel diameter
A marking such as 130/80B17 identifies a nominal width, aspect ratio, construction designation and 17-inch wheel diameter. The exact interpretation of each character is less important at the counter than matching the complete marking required for your position. Do not substitute a nearby size because it is available or because its overall diameter appears close.

Load and speed ratings
In the example 65H, the number is the load index and the letter is the speed symbol. The motorcycle manufacturer’s specified ratings are the minimum reference for a replacement. A tire with a lower rating is not an acceptable way to save money or obtain a different tread. If a proposed replacement has a different marking, ask an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer to verify it against the current specification before purchase.
Construction
Harley-Davidson specifically includes construction in its original-equipment recommendation. A tire with the correct dimensions but a different construction designation is not automatically equivalent. Treat construction as a fitment requirement, not a styling or preference choice.

Model-specific fitment examples
The following entries come from Harley-Davidson touring specifications and illustrate why the exact model and position matter. They are document-specific examples, not universal recommendations for every Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle. Confirm year, trim, market and wheel position in the current manual before ordering.
| Position | Example tire specification | Cold pressure in cited table | Listed model groups |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front | Dunlop D408F 130/80B17 65H BW | 36 psi | FLHT, FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTKL, FLTRU and FLHR |
| Rear | Dunlop D407T 180/65B16 81H BW | 40 psi | Several model groups listed in the same touring specification |
| Other applications | Different front and rear sizes, including 19-inch front or 18-inch rear examples | Not stated for every model in this summary | Use the exact model-year entry in the current manual |
The table’s 36-psi front and 40-psi rear values are examples from the cited specification, not a universal setting. A different year, trim, tire or market can have a different requirement.
Step 2: Match capacity to the motorcycle’s total load
Use GVWR and axle limits, not the tire marking alone
Harley-Davidson says the motorcycle’s maximum added weight includes the rider, passenger, accessories, cargo and riding gear. The tire’s load index does not authorize exceeding the motorcycle’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or either axle’s rating. The lower limit among the motorcycle, axle, wheel and tire specifications controls.

As historical examples, Harley-Davidson’s 2019 touring service specification lists a 1,360 lb GVWR and a 927 lb rear GAWR for the model groups covered there. The same table lists a 937 lb running weight for the FLTRU. Those figures apply to the listed model groups and year, not to every touring Harley-Davidson.
Make a load worksheet
- Find the motorcycle’s running or curb weight in the applicable specification.
- Subtract that weight from the motorcycle’s GVWR to determine the maximum added weight.
- Add the rider, passenger, helmets and other riding gear.
- Add luggage, tools, camping equipment and any accessories or modifications.
- Check front and rear distribution against the applicable axle ratings; total weight alone is not enough.
- Stop if the proposed load exceeds any listed limit. A higher tire load index cannot raise the motorcycle’s GVWR or axle rating.
Step 3: Set the correct cold pressure
Use the cold-pressure value in the owner’s manual for your motorcycle and tire application. Harley-Davidson’s guidance says to check pressure when the motorcycle has not been ridden for two hours. A pressure gauge intended for motorcycle tires is useful because a small error matters when a heavy motorcycle is carrying a passenger and luggage.
What “cold” means in practice
- Park the motorcycle away from direct heat when possible.
- Leave it unridden for at least two hours, as Harley-Davidson specifies.
- Remove the valve cap and measure the front and rear tires separately.
- Adjust to the manual’s specified cold pressure, then replace the caps securely.
- Record the reading if you are diagnosing a slow leak or pressure loss.
Do not use a pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the motorcycle’s normal setting. A sidewall pressure is a tire limit or reference established by the tire maker; the motorcycle manufacturer’s cold-pressure specification is the setting for the motorcycle’s intended load and handling.
Pressure symptoms that require investigation
- Repeated low pressure: inspect the valve, bead area, tread and rim for a leak before riding far.
- Pressure that rises after a ride: measure only when cold; hot pressure is expected to be higher.
- Uneven wear with correct pressure: verify fitment, wheel alignment, suspension condition and load distribution rather than changing pressure arbitrarily.
- Handling change after installation: stop and recheck size, direction, seating, pressure and the tire’s approval for that position.
How to compare approved options
Only compare products after confirming that each one is approved for the exact motorcycle and position. If the manual lists one fitment, there is no meaningful “best tire” comparison among products that do not meet it.
| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fitment | Model year, model, position, complete size, rim diameter and construction | Prevents a physical fit from being mistaken for an approved fit |
| Capability markings | Load index and speed symbol at least meeting the motorcycle specification | Maintains the required capacity and speed capability |
| Approved tire type | Type, tread family and sidewall style where the manual or approved list offers alternatives | Keeps the choice within the manufacturer’s validated applications |
| Practical factors | Current availability, price and dealer installation | These affect convenience but cannot override fitment |
There is no independent comparative test, mileage result or wet-weather ranking established in the cited Harley-Davidson material. Therefore, a tread cannot be presented as a proven performance winner on that evidence alone. Choose among approved options using the manufacturer’s specification first, then availability, cost and the quality of the installer.

Buying an exact replacement
Use the complete product description
Search by the full specification, not only by the motorcycle name. For an applicable rear fitment, that could mean searching for Dunlop D407T 180/65B16 81H; for an applicable front fitment, it could mean Dunlop D408F 130/80B17 65H. Neither example fits every Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle. Confirm the model-year application before placing an order.
Ask the seller or dealer these questions
- Is this exact size and construction approved for my model year and position?
- Does the load index and speed symbol meet the owner’s manual?
- What is the tire’s manufacture date, and is the tire supplied as the correct front or rear version?
- Will the installer balance the wheel and verify seating, rotation direction and valve condition?
- Can the dealer confirm the current fitment if the listing cites an older guide?
Harley-Davidson’s August 2019 replacement guide remains useful for identifying historical applications, but it is dated. Product availability and current fitment can change, so use it as a reference and confirm against the current manual and an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Installation checks for a heavy touring motorcycle
- Before removal, photograph the existing sidewall markings and note front or rear position.
- Confirm that the replacement’s complete marking matches the approved specification.
- Have the installer inspect the rim, valve stem, bead seat and wheel for damage or corrosion.
- Verify the tire’s rotation arrow, position designation and seating around the entire bead.
- Balance the wheel and reinstall it according to the motorcycle’s service procedure.
- Set cold pressure to the owner’s manual value after installation.
- Check that the tire does not contact the fender, belt, chain, swingarm or other components through the available suspension travel.
- Recheck pressure and visible seating before carrying a passenger or a full touring load.
If the installer cannot verify a tire’s approval, do not accept “it fits” as the answer. Obtain confirmation from an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer or use a tire listed for the exact motorcycle application.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Shopping by motorcycle category
Mistake: selecting any tire labeled for a touring Harley. Correction: begin with model year, trim, position, size, construction, load and speed ratings from the manual.
Using the sidewall maximum as the operating pressure
Mistake: inflating to the highest number molded on the tire. Correction: use the motorcycle manufacturer’s cold-pressure specification and measure after two hours without riding.

Ignoring the passenger and luggage
Mistake: checking only the rider’s weight. Correction: add passenger, gear, accessories and cargo, then compare the total with GVWR and axle limits.
Mixing unapproved manufacturers or applications
Mistake: combining tires that are individually approved somewhere in the Harley range. Correction: follow the 2019 replacement guide’s warning against mixing approved tires from different manufacturers on one motorcycle unless the current manufacturer documentation specifically permits the combination.
Assuming an old guide is current
Mistake: treating a 2019 table as the specification for a later motorcycle. Correction: use the current owner’s manual for the exact year and market, and treat historical tables only as examples.
A practical decision sequence
- Open the manual: locate the tire and wheel specification for the exact model year and trim.
- Separate positions: record front and rear requirements independently.
- Decode the markings: match complete size, wheel diameter, construction, load index and speed symbol.
- Calculate the touring load: include rider, passenger, gear, luggage and accessories and check GVWR and axle limits.
- Shortlist only approved products: remove any tire without exact fitment confirmation.
- Compare practical factors: among valid options, consider current availability, price and qualified installation.
- Install and set pressure: verify seating, rotation, balance and cold pressure.
- Recheck before loading: measure pressure cold and inspect for interference or leaks before a long trip.
What to keep with the motorcycle
- The current owner’s manual or a readily available copy of the applicable tire page.
- A reliable motorcycle tire-pressure gauge.
- The exact front and rear size, load and speed markings written in your maintenance records.
- The motorcycle’s GVWR and axle ratings for planning passenger and luggage loads.
- The installer’s invoice showing the tire model, size, position and date fitted.
Final verdict
For a heavy Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle, “best” means correctly specified before it means any tread preference. Match the current manual’s model-specific front and rear fitments, retain the required original-equipment size, construction, load rating and speed rating, keep the complete touring load within GVWR and axle limits, and use the specified cold pressure. The Dunlop D408F 130/80B17 65H BW front and D407T 180/65B16 81H BW rear are useful examples for listed applications, not universal recommendations. When a listing, old guide or salesperson conflicts with the current manual, verify the application with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer before buying or riding.
