Choose off-road tires by starting with the terrain you drive most and how often you use pavement, then verify that the tire’s size and load suitability match your vehicle and expected load. For mixed road and trail use, compare all-terrain tires first; consider mud-terrain tires when difficult mud or rugged surfaces are a major part of the job. Neither category is automatically right for every driver, and there is no single off-road tire size, load rating, or pressure that suits every vehicle and terrain.
Start with your terrain and road use
Before comparing tread patterns, write down where the vehicle actually goes and how much of its use is on pavement. A tire that is well suited to a trail may be an inconvenient compromise for a vehicle that spends most of its time on roads; a road-oriented choice may not suit regular trips through difficult terrain. The useful question is not which tire looks most aggressive, but which category fits the vehicle’s real use.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describes all-terrain tires as mainly used on four-wheel-drive vehicles and as a compromise between on-road driving and off-road capability. That makes all-terrain a sensible category to compare first for mixed use, not a universal recommendation. BFGoodrich’s selection guidance likewise frames the choice between all-terrain and mud-terrain tires around terrain and vehicle use rather than appearance alone.

- Estimate the balance between pavement and off-road use. A substantial amount of road use is a reason to weigh the all-terrain compromise carefully.
- Include the vehicle’s setup and expected load in the decision. A tire’s appearance does not establish that it is suitable for the load your vehicle will carry.
- Check the vehicle maker’s approved fitment and tire-maker guidance before buying or changing pressure.
These questions help narrow the category. They do not replace checking a specific tire’s fitment or establish that a particular model has been tested against another: the cited sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head ranking of tire models.

Make the terrain list concrete. Separate the conditions you encounter routinely from those you may meet only on a rare trip, and note whether the vehicle must also cover ordinary pavement miles before and after reaching a trail. This avoids letting one dramatic but infrequent outing dictate every purchase decision. If you regularly use more than one kind of surface, record that mix rather than trying to label the whole vehicle as a “trail” or “road” vehicle.
Then ask what you want the tires to do for the vehicle’s actual job. If pavement and trails both matter, the all-terrain compromise deserves a close look. If difficult mud or rugged surfaces are a major part of regular use, compare mud-terrain options as well. These are starting points for a product search, not promises about how a particular tire will perform on every surface. The sources do not establish that one category is the right answer for every owner, or that an aggressive appearance alone predicts suitability.
Compare all-terrain and mud-terrain tires
| Category | When to compare it | What the available guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| All-terrain | When the vehicle is used on both pavement and trails. | NHTSA characterizes the category as a compromise between on-road driving and off-road capability, and says it is mainly used on four-wheel-drive vehicles. |
| Mud-terrain | When difficult mud or rugged surfaces are a major part of the vehicle’s use. | BFGoodrich’s guidance treats the choice between mud-terrain and all-terrain as dependent on terrain and vehicle use; an aggressive-looking tread alone does not prove it is the better choice. |
Use those descriptions to decide which category deserves a closer fitment check, not as a guarantee of performance on every surface. The guidance does not establish exact performance figures or a winner across all conditions. Compare the tire options against your usual terrain, share of road driving, vehicle-approved size, expected load, and the tire maker’s instructions for use and inflation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When comparing products, keep the questions consistent. First ask whether the category makes sense for the surfaces and road use you listed. Next, confirm the tire is available in a size recommended for your vehicle and is suitable for the load you expect to carry. Finally, review the tire maker’s directions for the actual tire and intended use, including inflation. A comparison that starts and ends with tread appearance skips the fitment and load checks that determine whether a candidate is appropriate for your vehicle.
There is no supported universal winner to name here. The cited guidance does not provide a controlled test ranking all-terrain and mud-terrain models, nor does it supply performance numbers that would justify saying one model is best overall. If you are comparing two specific tires, use the manufacturers’ specifications and application guidance for those products rather than treating a broad category description as a model-by-model test result.
When the vehicle has a specialized use
Extreme rock crawling and racing are distinct use cases, but the available guidance does not establish a particular specialized design or model to recommend for either. For a specialized build, consult vehicle and tire manufacturers’ instructions for the actual vehicle, tire, load, and intended use instead of assuming that a general all-terrain or mud-terrain comparison settles the choice.

The same caution applies if your use does not fit neatly into either broad category. Do not select a specialized tire merely because the vehicle is modified or because the tread looks suited to a particular challenge. First identify the actual use, then ask the vehicle and tire makers which fitments and operating instructions apply. The sources here do not provide a basis for naming a specialized tire design or model for rock crawling or racing.

Verify size and load suitability before buying
Start with the vehicle’s owner’s manual or tire and loading information label. NHTSA advises buying the original tire size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Its guidance states: “To maintain tire safety, purchase new tires that are the same size as the vehicle’s original tires or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.” See NHTSA TireWise tire safety guidance.
- Find the vehicle’s approved size information. Check the owner’s manual or the tire and loading information label before shopping.
- Keep the size within the vehicle maker’s recommendation. Choose the original size or another size the manufacturer recommends; do not assume that a tire is appropriate just because it appears to fit.
- Account for the load you expect to carry. Check that the selected tire is suitable for the vehicle and its expected load. Nissan’s guidance on choosing off-road tires also identifies expected load as a factor to consider.
- Confirm the specific tire and fitment. Check the tire maker’s guidance and the vehicle’s requirements for the tire you intend to buy. Tread appearance is not a substitute for verifying size and load suitability.
The cited guidance does not provide one load rating or replacement size that works for every vehicle. If you are considering a size beyond what your vehicle maker recommends, the sources here do not establish that it is safe or appropriate for your particular vehicle; get vehicle- and tire-specific guidance before proceeding.
Do the fitment check before comparing prices or placing an order. Start with the size information for your vehicle, then use it to screen the tires you are considering. A retailer’s fitment lookup can be a useful shopping aid, but it should not replace the vehicle owner’s manual, tire and loading information label, or manufacturer guidance. Confirm that the exact tire under consideration—not just a similar-looking tire in the same category—matches the requirements for the vehicle.
Size and load are separate questions. A size that appears to fit physically does not by itself show that the tire is appropriate for the vehicle or the load it will carry. Similarly, an aggressive tread pattern says nothing conclusive about load suitability. Consider the expected load as part of the decision, and verify the specific tire against vehicle and tire-maker information instead of inferring suitability from its appearance.

Do not assume that a popular upgrade size is approved for your vehicle because another owner uses it. NHTSA’s advice is to buy the original size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The sources here do not establish blanket approval for larger, smaller, or otherwise altered fitments. If you are considering a size not listed in the vehicle’s guidance, seek advice that is specific to your vehicle and the tire before buying.

Set pressure differently for pavement and off-road use
For ordinary on-road driving, use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold tire pressure from the vehicle label or owner’s manual. NHTSA says that recommendation—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire—is the appropriate on-road pressure. Check pressure when the tires are cold so the reading is comparable. See NHTSA’s tire pressure guidance.
Off-road pressure depends on the actual tire size, vehicle, load, terrain, and setup. The cited sources do not establish a single safe PSI figure for all off-road combinations. Ask the tire maker for instructions that apply to your specific tire and use; do not treat a figure from another vehicle or terrain as a universal setting.
Keep on-road and off-road guidance distinct. The vehicle maker’s cold-pressure recommendation is the reference for ordinary pavement driving. An off-road adjustment is not a replacement for that recommendation once the vehicle returns to pavement. Because tire size, vehicle, load, terrain, and setup differ, advice that applies to one combination may not transfer safely to another. Do not select a universal number from a general rule of thumb when the relevant maker instructions are available.
Also distinguish the vehicle’s recommended pressure from the maximum pressure printed on a tire. NHTSA says the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure is the appropriate on-road pressure; the tire’s maximum printed pressure is not a substitute. Read the recommendation from the label or manual, and check the tires when cold for a comparable reading. If you are uncertain how a particular off-road setup changes the instructions, ask the tire maker rather than guessing.
If you air down for soft sand or rough terrain
The National Park Service’s Mojave National Preserve guidance describes lowering pressure for soft sand and filling back to the recommended pressure when returning to pavement. Follow vehicle and tire maker instructions for the specific setup, and make reinflation part of the plan before leaving pavement. See NPS guidance for 4WD vehicles and off-pavement travel.
- Do not assume that one off-road pressure applies to every tire, vehicle, load, and surface.
- Do not use the tire’s maximum printed pressure as the vehicle’s normal on-road recommendation.
- Before returning to pavement after airing down, reinflate to the vehicle maker’s recommended pressure, following applicable tire and vehicle instructions.
Think about reinflation before you leave pavement, not only after reaching the end of a trail. If your plan involves lowering pressure for soft sand or rough terrain, make sure returning to the recommended pressure is part of the route and equipment plan. The NPS guidance specifically describes filling back to recommended pressure when returning to pavement. The sources do not specify a universal reinflation method or pressure for all vehicles, so follow the instructions applicable to your tire and vehicle.

Do not copy an aired-down pressure from a different vehicle, tire size, load, or terrain and assume it will be suitable for yours. An off-road number without the relevant setup details cannot answer what is appropriate for your vehicle. Use the vehicle and tire makers’ directions, and keep the pavement recommendation in view for the drive back on roads.
Use safety guidance as part of the decision
Tire selection is only one part of safe use: correct fitment and pressure matter too. NHTSA reports 511 fatalities in 2024 in tire-related motor vehicle crashes. That is broad tire-related crash context, not an off-road-specific statistic and not evidence that one tire category prevents crashes. It reinforces why size and pressure should be checked against the vehicle maker’s guidance rather than chosen by appearance alone. The figure and guidance are on NHTSA TireWise.
Use that statistic carefully: it describes tire-related crashes broadly, not off-road driving specifically, and does not prove that choosing all-terrain rather than mud-terrain tires prevents a crash. The practical takeaway is narrower and more useful: take the vehicle’s fitment and pressure instructions seriously, verify load suitability, and do not assume that a tire’s visual style answers those questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical order for making the choice
- Describe the regular use. Identify the terrain the vehicle sees most and how much pavement driving it does.
- Choose a category to investigate. Compare all-terrain for mixed pavement and trail use; compare mud-terrain when difficult mud or rugged surfaces are a major part of the use.
- Check vehicle-approved size. Use the owner’s manual or tire and loading information label, and stay with the original size or another size the vehicle manufacturer recommends.
- Check suitability for expected load. Verify the specific tire is appropriate for the vehicle and the load it will carry.
- Set a pressure plan. Use the vehicle maker’s cold-pressure recommendation on pavement. For off-road use, follow tire- and vehicle-specific guidance rather than applying a universal pressure.
- Plan the return to pavement. If your off-road plan involves lowering pressure, arrange to reinflate to the recommended pressure before driving back on pavement.
Before purchasing, you can turn those steps into a short checklist: your regular terrain and road-use mix; the vehicle’s approved tire size; the load you expect the tire to carry; the specific tire’s manufacturer guidance; and the pressure instructions for both off-road use and the return to pavement. If one of those items is unclear, pause the purchase and resolve that specific question with vehicle- or tire-maker information rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
This order also prevents a common shopping mistake: choosing a tire based on its category first and discovering later that the size or load suitability is not established for the vehicle. Category narrows the field, but approved fitment, expected load, and operating instructions still have to be checked for the individual tire. Treat all-terrain and mud-terrain as options to investigate, not as a substitute for those checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which type of tire should I choose for mixed pavement and trail driving?
Compare all-terrain tires first. NHTSA describes them as a compromise between on-road driving and off-road capability, and says they are mainly used on four-wheel-drive vehicles. That makes them a category to investigate for mixed use, not a universal answer; verify the specific tire’s approved size and load suitability.

Are mud-terrain tires always better because they look more aggressive?
No. BFGoodrich’s selection guidance frames the all-terrain versus mud-terrain choice around terrain and vehicle use. Consider mud-terrain when difficult mud or rugged surfaces are a major part of the use, but tread appearance alone does not establish that a tire is the best choice for your vehicle.
Can I choose a different tire size for off-road driving?
Start with the size in the owner’s manual or tire and loading information label. NHTSA advises buying the original size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The sources do not establish blanket approval for a different size; get vehicle- and tire-specific guidance before choosing a size outside the maker’s recommendations.
How do I know whether a tire can handle my vehicle’s load?
Account for the load you expect to carry and check whether the specific tire is appropriate for the vehicle and that load. Nissan’s off-road tire guidance also identifies expected load as a selection factor. Do not infer a suitable load rating from tread appearance; consult the relevant vehicle and tire-maker information.
