Start with the tire size, load index, speed rating and cold-pressure specification on your Subaru’s door-jamb placard and in its owner’s manual. Without the wagon’s year, trim, market, wheels and modifications, there is no responsible one-size-fits-all tire model or size recommendation. For a different tire brand, Subaru strongly recommends keeping the originally equipped size and style.
Find the wagon’s approved tire specifications first
Read the placard on the specific vehicle and check its owner’s manual before comparing tires. The placard identifies the required size and load index; verify the speed rating and other vehicle-specific requirements in the manual or with a qualified tire professional. Michelin’s guide explains where to find the size and load information: How to Choose the Right Tires.

Record the model year, trim, market, wheel size, current tire markings and placard specifications. Note any non-original wheels or suspension changes, too. A listing for a different older Subaru—even one with the same body style—does not establish fitment for yours. Tire Rack’s 1997 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon tire listing illustrates how fitment is vehicle-specific; it is not a recommendation for every older Subaru wagon.
Use Subaru’s recommendation as the baseline
Subaru Customer Self-Service says: “We recommend that you replace your Subaru vehicle’s tires with the same tires as originally equipped, as they were chosen specifically for your vehicle. If you are going to put on a different brand tire, we strongly recommend that you use the same size/style as originally equipped.” The answer also directs owners to the manual and an authorized Subaru retailer for additional questions: Subaru tire replacement recommendations.

Decide how demanding your gravel and dirt use really is
“Gravel and dirt” can mean an occasional, maintained road or frequent travel over rough, loose surfaces. Those uses do not automatically call for the same tire. Consider how often and how roughly you drive off pavement, alongside your rain, snow and ice exposure, highway mileage, noise tolerance and tread-life priorities.
Mostly pavement, occasional maintained roads
Compare road-oriented tires that meet the wagon’s original specifications. Give particular weight to paved-road wet and winter performance, highway comfort and expected noise. Occasional use on maintained gravel alone does not establish a need for a more aggressive tread.

Frequent or rough unpaved driving
Compare suitable all-terrain tires with road-oriented alternatives, but treat the category label as a starting point rather than proof of how a particular tire will perform on your Subaru. Bridgestone describes its all-terrain category as emphasizing grip, handling, wet and snow control, wear and year-round performance; those category claims are not a tested comparison for your wagon. See Bridgestone’s all-terrain tire overview.

Compare candidates on the details that affect your use
- Fit and ratings: Confirm the exact approved size and required load and speed ratings. Have a tire professional verify any proposed deviation before buying.
- Weather and pavement: Weigh wet-road and winter needs against how much highway driving you do.
- Unpaved conditions: Consider the frequency and roughness of your gravel and dirt routes, not just whether you drive on them at all.
- Comfort and ownership: Compare expected road noise, tread life, cost and availability in the required size.
- Vehicle changes: If the wheels or suspension are not original, ask a qualified tire seller or Subaru retailer to confirm fitment.
- Four-tire consistency: Follow the owner’s manual or ask a Subaru retailer about replacement requirements, especially if damage affects only one tire.
Set pressure using the vehicle’s instructions
Check pressure with a gauge when the tires are cold, and use the vehicle-specific figure on the placard or in the manual. Subaru’s How to Check Tire Pressure explains the check. The sources cited here do not establish a gravel-specific pressure for an unspecified older Subaru wagon, so do not substitute a generic off-road setting for the vehicle’s instructions.

A practical shortlist process
- Record the wagon’s year, model, trim, market, wheel size, current tire markings, placard size and ratings, plus any wheel or suspension changes.
- Classify your routes as occasional and maintained or frequent and rough; note local rain, snow and ice and how much highway driving you do.
- Shortlist tire types and specific candidates only within the vehicle’s permissible fitment. Compare dimensions and load and speed ratings, then have a tire professional verify any proposed deviation.
- Confirm the replacement plan for all four tires against the manual or with a Subaru retailer, particularly when replacing fewer than four.
- Check and adjust pressure cold to the placard or manual value.
