How to Choose Tires for an Audi RS 5

Audi RS 5 tire fitment varies by year, package, wheel setup and market. Start with the vehicle placard and manual, then match ratings and tire type to your climate.

Choose tires for an Audi RS 5 by matching the exact car’s tire placard and owner’s-manual specifications first, then selecting a tire type for your climate and driving. The required size, load index, speed rating and any Audi original-equipment marking can vary by model year, body style, package and market, so no single size or pressure is right for every RS 5. Audi’s service guidance directs owners to the manual for tire-pressure instructions.

What tires fit an Audi RS 5?

The correct fitment is the one specified for your particular car—not simply a size listed for an RS 5 with a similar year or wheel diameter. Before shopping, identify the model year, Coupe or Sportback body style, trim or package, wheel setup and sales market. Then check the tire placard on the vehicle, read the owner’s manual and compare those details with the tire currently fitted.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use the placard and manual as the primary references. A retailer’s vehicle selector can help narrow options, but a listing is not proof that a tire fits every version of the car. Michelin’s selector, for example, asks for a specific year and package and presents a particular tire application. Confirm that the selected configuration matches your vehicle and that the tire’s full specifications meet the car’s requirements. Michelin’s 2024 RS 5 competition-package listing is one example, not a universal RS 5 specification.

Record these details before comparing tires

  • Model year and body style.
  • Trim, package and wheel diameter.
  • Sales market, since specifications and available configurations can differ by region.
  • The complete tire size and ratings printed on the placard and sidewall.
  • Any Audi-specific original-equipment (OE) marking shown on the existing tire or required by the vehicle documentation.

Do not copy a size from another RS 5 merely because the year or body style looks similar. For instance, an Audi South Africa brochure for the 2023 model connects a 275/30 R20 tire with an optional 20-inch wheel and RS competition plus package. That is a market- and package-specific example, not a fitment rule for other RS 5s. Audi South Africa’s 2023 RS 5 brochure identifies that configuration.

Use the sidewall as a way to record what is fitted, not as the only authority for what should be fitted. If the current tires do not agree with the placard or manual, pause before ordering a replacement in the same size; have a qualified tire professional check the correct application. That extra check is especially useful when the car has a different wheel package, a seasonal setup, or tires installed by a previous owner.

Which specifications must match?

Matching the size alone is not enough. Compare the replacement tire’s complete size, load index and speed rating with the vehicle’s requirements. Also check whether the car’s documentation or the tire application calls for an Audi OE-marked tire. If any rating or marking differs, ask a qualified tire professional to confirm the proposed tire is suitable before buying or fitting it.

Size, load index and speed rating

The tire size identifies the tire’s dimensional and construction application, while the load index and speed rating identify important operating limits. Use the exact required values from the placard and manual rather than choosing a tire based on a partial size match or appearance. A tire that physically mounts to a wheel is not automatically an appropriate replacement.

Michelin’s U.S. selector for a 2024 RS 5 with the competition package lists a 275/30ZR20/XL (97Y) application. The full string matters: it is tied to that selected vehicle configuration, and its ratings should not be assumed for a different RS 5. See the selected 2024 application.

When you compare two candidates, compare every part of the specification rather than just the first numbers in the size. A listing may show a matching size but a different load or speed rating, or it may describe a separate vehicle package. Keep a copy of the placard information beside the product listing so you can check the complete application before checkout. If a selector offers more than one result, do not assume that the first result is correct simply because it is the same tire brand or model.

Audi OE markings

Audi identifies markings such as R0/RE0 and older AO-family marks as identifiers for Audi Original Tires. Audi says it recommends using tires carrying its specified markings: “Audi always recommends utilizing Audi Original Tires identified by a marking on the sidewall.” That recommendation is a useful selection criterion, but it does not replace checking the size and ratings required for your exact vehicle. Audi’s Original Tires guidance explains the markings.

Look for the marking on the sidewall and check the vehicle documentation or ask the tire professional whether it is required for the application you are considering. The Audi marking is one part of fitment verification; it does not make an otherwise mismatched size or rating suitable. Conversely, if you are considering a tire without the marking listed for your car, resolve that difference before purchase rather than treating the brand name or product category as a substitute.

When a winter tire has a lower speed rating

Do not treat a lower speed rating as equivalent to the original tire’s rating. Michelin’s Canadian listing for a 2024 RS 5 Sport package includes a winter tire in 275/30R20/XL 97V POR and warns that its speed rating is lower than the original-equipment tire specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Michelin says the vehicle’s maximum driving speed must be reduced to the winter tire’s speed rating. This is a specific listing and warning, not a blanket winter recommendation for every RS 5. Read Michelin Canada’s 2024 listing and speed-rating notice.

For any winter tire with a lower rating, take the restriction seriously for as long as that tire is fitted. Ask the installer to confirm the tire’s rating and the applicable maximum speed, and make sure every driver using the car understands the limitation. Do not assume that the vehicle’s performance capability or the rating of its summer tires carries over to the winter setup.

Should you choose summer, all-season or winter tires?

Choose the tire category around the conditions in which the RS 5 will actually be driven. Audi describes summer, all-season and winter tires as serving different needs; the category name alone does not establish that a tire is suitable for every climate or driving situation.

Tire type Best fit Trade-off or caution
High-performance summer Warm-weather driving and performance priorities. Audi says these tires are not suitable for cold, snowy or icy conditions.
High-performance all-season A year-round compromise where winter conditions are limited. Audi describes a balance of comfort, handling, quietness and tread life, with some snow traction. “All-season” is not a guarantee of suitability for severe winter conditions.
Winter Regular driving in cold, snowy or icy conditions. Confirm the size and required ratings, and check whether the chosen winter tire’s speed rating is lower than the car’s original requirement.

Audi’s current U.S. consumer guidance uses 45°F as a seasonal rule of thumb. This is Audi’s guidance, not a universal legal threshold, and it does not override the tire manufacturer’s instructions or the conditions you encounter. Audi’s tire guidance describes the categories and seasonal considerations.

Summer performance for warm conditions

Summer tires are the closest fit to warm-weather performance use, but Audi explicitly cautions against using high-performance summer tires in cold, snowy or icy weather. If your local climate regularly brings those conditions, select a tire setup intended for them rather than relying on the summer tire’s dry-road performance priorities.

All-season for limited winter conditions

A high-performance all-season tire can be a compromise if winters are generally mild and you want one tire category across the year. Audi describes all-season tires as balancing comfort, handling, tread life and some snow traction. That balance is not the same as winter capability in every severe condition; consider how often you encounter snow and ice when deciding whether the compromise is adequate.

Winter tires for cold, snow and ice

For regular winter driving, Audi says winter compounds are designed to remain pliable in cold weather and describes tread features intended to improve traction in snow and slush. Confirm that the winter tire meets the car’s required size and load needs, then compare its speed rating with the vehicle’s original specification. If that rating is lower, follow the tire maker’s stated speed limit rather than assuming the original vehicle maximum still applies.

If you plan to switch seasonally, confirm that a compatible winter tire and wheel arrangement is available for your exact RS 5 before buying. Audi offers seasonal wheel-and-tire packages, but package availability and fitment are not universal. Ask the dealer or tire professional to verify the configuration, ratings and current package terms for your vehicle and market.

How should you check tire pressure?

Set inflation pressure using the vehicle’s tire placard and owner’s manual, and follow the manual’s checking procedure. Do not use a generic RS 5 pressure figure from a website or another model year: pressures can vary with the vehicle application, and Michelin’s listings show more than one size or application with differing pressure entries. Audi also notes that temperature changes can affect tire pressure and TPMS results. Audi’s service information directs owners to the manual for tire-pressure instructions; Michelin’s selector illustrates why a listing should be checked against the specific vehicle. View the 2024 competition-package application.

When a TPMS warning or reading changes with temperature, use the vehicle’s specified procedure to check pressure rather than assuming a generic number applies. The car’s placard and manual remain the references for the correct pressure and checking method.

Do not treat a pressure shown for a different size or application in an online selector as the correct setting for your car. First confirm the selector’s year, package, wheel and tire application; then follow the pressure instructions for the actual vehicle. If a tire professional has questions about a nonstandard or seasonal setup, have them reconcile it with the manufacturer’s vehicle-specific guidance rather than relying on a general RS 5 figure.

How to choose and verify a replacement

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Write down its model year, body style, trim or package, wheel diameter and market.
  2. Read the car’s own specifications. Check the tire placard and owner’s manual for the required size, load index, speed rating and pressure instructions.
  3. Check the current tire markings. Note the complete sidewall specification and any Audi OE marking. Do not assume the existing tire is correct if it conflicts with the vehicle documentation.
  4. Filter tire listings by the exact application. Use vehicle selectors as a starting point, then verify the selected year, package, size and ratings against your car.
  5. Choose the seasonal category. Match summer, all-season or winter capability to your local temperatures and the conditions in which you drive.
  6. Resolve rating or marking differences before purchase. If a candidate tire has a different load or speed rating, or lacks a marking called for by the application, get confirmation from a qualified tire professional.
  7. Confirm the final fitment with the installer. Have the tire professional verify compatibility for the vehicle and wheel setup before installation, especially when changing tire category or moving to a winter setup.

For a useful final check, ask the installer to repeat the vehicle application back to you: year, package, wheel setup, tire size and ratings. That simple confirmation can catch a selector set to the wrong package or market. If the quote involves a different specification from the placard, ask why it is being proposed and get professional confirmation of suitability before authorizing installation.

What should you compare once fitment is confirmed?

After filtering out tires that do not meet the vehicle’s requirements, compare the remaining options on factors that affect your own use. A tire that is attractive on one measure may be less suitable on another: Audi notes that high-performance tires can ride less comfortably, produce more road noise and wear more quickly.

  • Climate and season: whether the tire category suits local cold, snow, ice, rain and warm-weather conditions.
  • Wet- and dry-road priorities: decide which conditions matter most for your routine driving.
  • Comfort and noise: consider Audi’s caution that some high-performance tires trade comfort and quiet for performance priorities.
  • Expected wear and replacement cost: compare the options you are considering without assuming a tread-life figure that has not been established for your driving.
  • Winter setup availability: check that a compatible winter tire and wheel arrangement is available if you need seasonal tires.
  • Installation details: ask what mounting, balancing and alignment work is applicable to the selected setup.
  • Coverage terms: if a tire or wheel-and-tire package includes coverage, check the current exclusions and time or tread limits with the dealer rather than assuming all damage or wear is covered.

Audi describes seasonal wheel-and-tire packages and notes that package coverage has exclusions and time or tread limits. Verify current terms with the dealer before relying on that coverage. Audi’s Wheel & Tire Packages page provides its package information.

To compare cost fairly, request quotes for tires that all meet the same vehicle requirements and seasonal need. Ask what the quoted price includes, including professional mounting and balancing, any applicable alignment work, and any road-hazard or package coverage. Compare the coverage terms and exclusions rather than assuming that a package automatically covers every repair or replacement. No single tire price or expected wear figure applies to every RS 5 configuration or driver, so use current local quotes and the product terms for the candidates you have verified.

There is no need to trade away a required rating to chase a price or a familiar model name. First establish which candidates are suitable, then weigh their price, comfort, noise and seasonal usefulness. Audi notes that high-performance tires may wear more quickly and be less comfortable or noisier; those are relevant ownership trade-offs to consider alongside purchase cost, not a basis for assuming a specific tire will last a particular number of miles.

Examples of RS 5 tire listings—and their limits

Listings illustrate how choices vary by selected vehicle; they should not be read as a universal shopping list. For a 2024 RS 5 with the competition package, Michelin’s U.S. selector lists the Pilot Sport 4 S and Pilot Sport All-Season 4 in 275/30ZR20/XL (97Y). Those examples show summer and all-season options for that selected configuration only. Check your own vehicle label and current fitment before buying. See the U.S. selector result.

For a 2024 RS 5 Sport package, Michelin Canada lists a Pilot Alpin PA4 winter tire in 275/30R20/XL 97V POR and warns about its lower speed rating relative to the vehicle’s original-equipment tire. That example is specific to the listed Canadian application; confirm your own required fitment and observe the speed limit associated with any lower-rated tire. See the Canadian winter listing.

Together, these listings illustrate why the tire category and vehicle fitment need to be checked separately. A summer and all-season choice may appear for one selected U.S. configuration, while a Canadian winter listing for a different package carries a speed-rating warning. Neither example establishes what fits another year, body style, package or market. Use them to understand the kinds of options a selector may show, then return to the tire placard and manual for the car in front of you.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Does the selected listing match your RS 5’s year, body style, package, wheel setup and market?
  • Does the full tire size match the vehicle specification?
  • Do the load index and speed rating meet the vehicle’s requirements?
  • Have you checked the required or preferred Audi OE marking?
  • Does the tire category match the climate and conditions you drive in?
  • If the winter tire has a lower speed rating, have you accounted for its stated maximum speed?
  • Will you use the vehicle’s placard and manual for pressure rather than a generic figure?
  • Have the installer or dealer confirmed fitment and any package coverage terms?
  • Does your quote make clear what professional installation work and coverage are included?

The safest buying decision is the one that satisfies the exact vehicle specification before comparing performance preferences. Once the fitment is verified, choose the season and comfort-versus-performance balance that suits your driving; do not let a familiar model name or a selector result substitute for the RS 5’s own placard and manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tires fit an Audi RS 5?

The correct tires depend on the RS 5’s model year, body style, package, wheel setup and market. Start with the vehicle’s tire placard and owner’s manual, then match the full tire size, load index, speed rating and any applicable Audi OE marking. Online selectors are useful starting points, not universal fitment authority.

Can I use all-season tires on an Audi RS 5?

A high-performance all-season tire may be a compromise where winter conditions are limited. Audi describes these tires as balancing comfort, handling, quietness and tread life while helping maintain some snow traction. That does not guarantee suitability for severe winter conditions; choose based on the climate and conditions you regularly encounter.

Which tires are best for an RS 5 in winter?

For regular cold, snowy or icy driving, consider a winter tire intended for those conditions, then verify its size, load index, speed rating and OE marking against your car. Some winter listings may have a lower speed rating than the original tire. Michelin warns that the vehicle’s maximum driving speed must then be reduced to the winter tire’s rating.

What tire pressure should I use in an Audi RS 5?

Use the pressure and checking procedure specified on your vehicle’s tire placard and in its owner’s manual. Pressure can vary by application, and temperature changes can affect pressure and TPMS results. Do not copy a generic figure from a different RS 5 or an online listing for another configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Audi RS 5 use 275/30 R20 tires?

No single size should be treated as universal. For example, Audi South Africa’s 2023 brochure associates 275/30 R20 with an optional 20-inch wheel and RS competition plus package, while Michelin’s 2024 U.S. selector shows a 275/30ZR20/XL (97Y) application for a selected competition-package car. Check your own placard and manual.

Should I look for an Audi Original Tire marking?

Audi recommends Audi Original Tires identified by sidewall markings such as R0/RE0 and older AO-family marks. Check whether the marking is specified or preferred for your application, but still verify size, load and speed ratings. An OE marking does not make a mismatched tire suitable.

The Bottom Line

Start with the RS 5’s own placard and manual, not a generic size or pressure chart. Match the full size, load and speed ratings, check Audi OE markings, and choose summer, all-season or winter tires for the conditions you actually drive in. Verify any lower-rated winter tire’s speed restriction and have the final fitment confirmed before installation.
