For U.S. shoppers choosing a 2026 compact SUV, the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 suit different priorities rather than producing one universal winner. The CR-V offers a choice between a turbocharged gasoline engine and a conventional hybrid; Toyota describes the 2026 RAV4 lineup as hybrid and plug-in hybrid, with drivetrain availability varying by grade. The entry-trim prices are close, but fuel economy, space, towing, equipment and actual purchase cost must be compared on the exact trims you would buy.
What the 2026 comparison shows at a glance
The table is a starting point, not a trim-for-trim verdict: the figures come from different configurations and are not all directly comparable. Honda’s figures below describe the CR-V’s entry price and powertrain outputs; Toyota’s economy, cargo and towing figures are maximum published values that can vary by configuration.

| Item | 2026 Honda CR-V | 2026 Toyota RAV4 |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. entry-trim starting MSRP | $30,920 for the LX, listed by American Honda. | $31,900 for the LE, listed by Toyota. |
| Powertrain choices described | Turbocharged gasoline engine and two-motor hybrid system. | Hybrid and plug-in hybrid lineup; drivetrain availability depends on grade. |
| Published power figure | 190 hp for the turbo engine; 204 hp for the two-motor hybrid system, according to American Honda. | Not stated here as a directly comparable lineup-wide figure; see the RAV4 specifications for configuration-specific details. |
| Fuel economy | A matching trim-specific EPA figure is not established here; check the exact vehicle’s EPA label. | Up to 47 city/40 highway MPG, a Toyota manufacturer estimate that varies by trim and drivetrain; check the exact configuration. |
| Maximum published cargo capacity | A comparable figure and measurement basis are not established here. | Up to 37.8 cubic feet, according to Toyota; the cited maximum is not a trim-matched comparison. |
| Maximum published towing capacity | A comparable rating and configuration limits are not established here. | Up to 3,500 pounds, according to Toyota; confirm the rating for the specific grade and configuration. |
| Driver-assistance suite named by manufacturer | Honda Sensing; the CR-V page also describes blind-spot information and cross-traffic monitoring. Availability can vary by trim. | Toyota Safety Sense 4.0; verify equipment for the specific grade. |
Manufacturer-listed specifications are useful for building a shortlist, but they do not substitute for an EPA label, an equivalent equipment list, or a hands-on fit check. Neither a maximum figure nor a feature-suite name establishes that one vehicle is better in every configuration.
One reason to read the specifications by grade is that model-line summaries can combine figures that do not belong to the same vehicle. Toyota’s highest published MPG, cargo volume and towing capacity should not be read as a package available on one specific RAV4 unless Toyota’s trim-level information confirms that. Similarly, Honda’s 190-hp gasoline-engine and 204-hp hybrid-system figures describe different CR-V powertrains, not a direct measure of which one will feel quicker or cost less to run.

How close are their prices?
As listed by the manufacturers for the 2026 U.S. lineup, the CR-V LX starts at $30,920 and the RAV4 LE at $31,900. These are entry-trim starting MSRPs, not out-the-door quotes or a guarantee that the two trims include equivalent equipment. The prices may also differ from what a buyer ultimately pays.
The difference between those listed starting prices is $980, with the CR-V’s published entry price lower. That is a useful first comparison, not proof that the CR-V is cheaper for every shopper. A buyer comparing a hybrid CR-V with a RAV4 plug-in hybrid, for example, is not comparing the two entry trims in the table. The powertrain and grade selected can change the price substantially, and no complete trim-by-trim price comparison is established by the two base MSRPs alone.
Compare equipment, not just badges
Before treating either figure as the cheaper choice, build a pair of trim configurations with the features you actually want. Check items such as the powertrain, drive layout, driver-assistance equipment and convenience features on each manufacturer’s current trim information. If the equipment you want requires moving up a grade on one model but not the other, compare those grades instead of assuming the base trims are equivalent.
Make a short list before requesting quotes: required powertrain, front- or all-wheel-drive configuration if offered on the grades you’re considering, safety and convenience features, and any accessories you expect to need. Then ask dealers to price the vehicles that actually match that list. This reduces the chance of comparing a sparsely equipped version of one SUV with a better-equipped version of the other.
The useful comparison is the full local quote for each chosen configuration. Ask the dealer to itemize the vehicle price, delivery, taxes, dealer-installed accessories and any regional incentives. If financing, a trade-in or a lease is part of the decision, compare those terms separately rather than allowing a monthly payment to conceal differences in price, fees or loan length. MSRP is a reference point; it does not predict an individual transaction price.
For financing, compare the amount financed, interest rate, loan term and any required down payment on the same basis. For a lease, compare the due-at-signing amount, term, mileage allowance and other quoted conditions, rather than looking only at the monthly figure. If you have a trade-in, ask for its value separately so you can see the vehicle price and trade value independently. Local incentives may depend on location, timing, trim or eligibility, so confirm their terms in the actual offer instead of assuming a national advertised price applies to you.
Which powertrain fits your driving?
Choose the CR-V turbo gasoline option if you want a non-hybrid choice
The CR-V gives shoppers a turbocharged gasoline engine listed at 190 hp. That makes it the relevant CR-V configuration to consider if you do not want a hybrid system. The figure is manufacturer-listed engine output, not an independent performance test, and it does not by itself predict acceleration, refinement or fuel costs in daily driving.
When you test-drive this version, pay attention to how it behaves in the situations you encounter: joining a busy highway, accelerating from a stop, merging with passengers aboard, and driving at the speeds common on your route. Compare the same sorts of conditions in the other powertrain you are considering. A horsepower figure alone cannot tell you which vehicle’s response, noise level or driving character you will prefer.
Choose a conventional hybrid if you want electrification without plugging in
Honda lists a two-motor CR-V hybrid system at 204 hp. Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 range also includes hybrid models. A conventional hybrid does not require the owner to charge it from an external power source, so it is the relevant comparison for a shopper who wants a hybrid but does not plan to plug in. Compare the exact grades and their EPA labels rather than assuming that all hybrids return the same economy.

For a conventional hybrid comparison, first make sure the vehicles are both conventional hybrids, then match drive layout and equipment as closely as possible. Look up the EPA city, highway and combined estimates for the specific versions. If one is available only in a different grade or drivetrain than the other, note that difference rather than treating their headline numbers as like-for-like. Both manufacturers’ estimates are standardized ratings; actual results vary with driving conditions and individual use.
Also decide what you want from the powertrain beyond the fuel-economy label. If you mostly make short trips, regularly drive on highways, carry a full cabin, or encounter steep grades, test the vehicle in conditions that resemble your routine where possible. This is not a substitute for the EPA comparison, but it helps answer a separate question: whether you like the way the actual configuration drives.

Consider the RAV4 plug-in hybrid only if charging fits your routine
Toyota describes the 2026 RAV4 lineup as including plug-in hybrid versions. A plug-in hybrid adds a charging decision to the purchase: consider where and how regularly you can charge, and compare the exact vehicle’s specifications and EPA information with the conventional hybrid you are also considering. The available figures here do not establish a comparable CR-V plug-in hybrid, nor do they support a direct electric-range or running-cost comparison.
Think through the practical details before paying for a plug-in model: whether you can charge at home or at another regular location, how often that access is available, and whether your typical routine makes charging convenient. A plug-in hybrid and a conventional hybrid are not interchangeable choices if you do not expect to plug in. Check Toyota’s exact grade specifications and EPA information for the vehicle being quoted; do not infer electric range or savings from the general label “plug-in hybrid.”
Do not decide from a maximum MPG figure
Toyota publishes a maximum RAV4 estimate of 47 city/40 highway MPG, but says figures vary with trim and drivetrain. That maximum should not be treated as the rating for every RAV4 or as proof of a fuel-economy win over the CR-V. Get the EPA figure for each specific trim and drivetrain under consideration, then compare the same kind of rating for both vehicles. A city figure should be compared with a city figure, and a combined figure with a combined figure.
For a more personal estimate, use the exact EPA figures alongside your expected annual mileage and local fuel prices. Your result will depend on the configuration and your driving; a manufacturer’s maximum estimate is not a promise of what an individual owner will achieve.
A simple annual fuel-cost estimate can make the comparison more concrete without pretending to predict exact real-world results. Divide the miles you expect to drive in a year by each vehicle’s relevant MPG estimate to approximate gallons used, then multiply by a local price per gallon. Use comparable EPA ratings and the same mileage and fuel-price assumptions for both vehicles. This calculation is only an estimate: it does not account for changes in fuel prices, driving style, weather, load or route, and it should not be confused with a guaranteed saving.
If you’re considering the plug-in RAV4, keep charging electricity and gasoline as separate inputs in your ownership estimate and rely on the exact vehicle’s EPA figures. The maximum conventional RAV4 MPG figure is not a substitute for the plug-in model’s own information. Likewise, do not assign the CR-V a fuel-economy figure based on another grade or powertrain. The exact window label is the right place to start.
Which one has more room for passengers and cargo?
The available comparable cargo measurements do not establish which model has more usable space. Toyota lists a maximum RAV4 cargo capacity of 37.8 cubic feet, but a matching CR-V value and the measurement conditions needed for a fair comparison are not established here. Do not infer an overall roominess winner from that one maximum.

Published capacity is one part of the question, but the shape and accessibility of the space may matter more for a particular household. A boxy item may not fit through an opening even if the stated volume seems ample; a tall lift-over can make frequent loading less convenient; and the cargo floor’s shape can affect how easily luggage or a stroller sits in place. Check whether the rear seats fold in the way you need and how much usable space remains for passengers and cargo together.

Bring the items that shape your decision to a dealership, if practical. A stroller, suitcase, sports equipment or mobility aid can reveal differences that a published volume alone cannot: the cargo floor’s shape, the opening, the lift-over height and how easily the items fit. Check whether your usual load can be arranged without blocking visibility or requiring you to remove other equipment.
If a regular load includes several people and luggage, test that combination instead of evaluating an empty cargo bay. Have passengers sit where they normally would, then arrange the bags, stroller or other gear you would take on an ordinary trip. This provides a direct fit check without relying on a capacity number measured under conditions that may not match your needs.
If you use child seats, install the seats you own or expect to buy in the actual vehicle. Check access to the rear seats, room for the front passenger with the child seat installed, and whether buckles and anchors are easy for your household to use. A family’s day-to-day fit is more useful than a general statement that one cabin is roomier.
What should you know about towing?
Toyota lists up to 3,500 pounds of RAV4 towing capacity. That is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a rating established for every RAV4 grade. The comparable CR-V towing rating and configuration limits have not been established here, so the available evidence does not support naming an overall towing winner.
Recommended Free Tools
If towing matters, verify the exact vehicle’s rating and equipment in its current manufacturer specifications and owner documentation before purchase. Match the vehicle to the trailer and load you intend to tow; do not assume that a model-wide maximum applies to every powertrain or grade. If the CR-V is on your shortlist, obtain its configuration-specific rating from Honda rather than treating missing comparative data as zero capacity.
Before making a decision, identify the trailer’s loaded weight rather than relying only on its empty weight, and account for the cargo and passengers that will be in the vehicle. Confirm the relevant limits and required equipment in the documentation for the precise vehicle. If the numbers or instructions are unclear, ask the manufacturer or dealer to clarify them in writing. The RAV4’s published maximum is a starting specification to verify, not permission to tow that amount with every configuration.
How should you compare safety and driver assistance?
Honda describes Honda Sensing on the CR-V page and identifies features including blind-spot information and cross-traffic monitoring. Toyota lists Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 for the 2026 RAV4. Feature availability may differ by trim, so compare the equipment list for each exact configuration rather than assuming that every vehicle in a model line has the same systems.
When comparing equipment, write down the features you care about and verify their presence on the individual grade. A suite name is not a complete inventory of what is included on a particular vehicle. Ask whether the specific quoted vehicle has the features you expect, and confirm the description in the current manufacturer information rather than relying on a general model-family overview.

A suite name or feature count is not an independent crash-test result. Current independent head-to-head ratings for both 2026 models are not established here, so this comparison cannot support a claim that one is safer overall. If crash-test performance is central to your choice, consult current ratings from the relevant independent testing organizations once ratings for the exact model year and vehicles are available, and keep those results separate from the manufacturers’ feature descriptions.
There are two different questions to keep distinct: which driver-assistance features a vehicle includes, and how it performs in independent crash testing. Manufacturer pages can help answer the first when checked by grade; they do not settle the second. Do not turn the presence of a named system or an individual feature into a blanket safety ranking.
Small ownership details can matter, too
Equipment and accessories can influence what you pay and how well a vehicle fits your routine. Toyota’s 2026 brochure lists all-weather floor mats among the Woodland grade equipment. If floor protection is important, check what is included on the specific RAV4 grade you are pricing and whether the corresponding CR-V configuration has the accessory you want. Do not assume that an accessory is standard across a model line just because it appears in one grade’s brochure listing.
For floor mats or other vehicle-specific accessories, confirm model year, grade and fitment before buying. A listing or accessory description should match the precise vehicle, and availability can vary. Include accessories you need in the quote comparison so that one vehicle is not made to look less expensive simply because required items are priced separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to choose between them without guessing
- Pick the powertrain category first. Decide whether you want the CR-V’s turbo gasoline option, a conventional hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid. If considering a plug-in model, include charging access and habits in the decision.
- Select the actual grades. Identify the trims and drive layouts you would buy on both sides. A comparison of entry-level prices is useful for orientation, but a recommendation should use vehicles with comparable equipment.
- Check configuration-specific numbers. Use each vehicle’s EPA label for fuel economy. Confirm towing ratings, driver-assistance equipment and the other specifications that matter on the exact grade rather than applying a model-line maximum to every version.
- Make a physical fit check. Sit in both vehicles, test the rear-seat arrangement, install child seats if relevant, and load representative cargo. Pay attention to floor shape, lift-over height, access and visibility, not just a capacity number.
- Get itemized local quotes. Request the full price for each chosen vehicle, including delivery, taxes, dealer-installed accessories and any applicable incentives. Compare financing or lease terms on the same basis.
- Test-drive the trims you would actually buy. Try them on familiar roads and in the conditions that matter to you. A drive in a different powertrain or grade may not represent the vehicle you are pricing.
These steps help prevent a few common comparison mistakes. Do not compare a RAV4’s maximum MPG with an unspecified CR-V rating, use a model-wide towing maximum as if it covered every grade, or conclude that one SUV has more usable space from a single manufacturer capacity figure. Do not treat base MSRPs as final prices or assume similarly named safety suites contain identical equipment. Each shortcut can make a quick answer look decisive without answering the question for the vehicle you would actually own.
Keep a small comparison sheet for the two specific vehicles. Record the grade and powertrain, the EPA city/highway/combined figures, the features included, the relevant cargo or towing details, accessories, and itemized quote. Any blank is a prompt to verify a detail, not a reason to assume the vehicles are equivalent. Once the important facts are filled in, the choice usually becomes a clearer match to your priorities rather than a contest based on isolated headline numbers.
Conditional recommendations
The CR-V is a sensible shortlist choice if you want a gasoline alternative
If having a turbocharged gasoline option alongside a conventional hybrid matters, the CR-V gives you that choice. Its entry MSRP is close to the RAV4’s entry price, so decide using the equipment and final quotes for your selected grades rather than the small difference between the two starting figures.
The CR-V may also make sense if you have already decided against plugging in but want to compare a conventional hybrid with a non-hybrid gasoline version within one model lineup. That is a powertrain-choice advantage, not a conclusion about fuel costs or performance. Compare the grades, EPA labels and test drives that correspond to the way you intend to use the vehicle.

The plug-in option is most relevant if charging is practical for you and you want to evaluate that type of powertrain. The published maximum towing or cargo figure may also put a particular RAV4 grade on your shortlist, but confirm the exact configuration and make a hands-on fit check before treating either as decisive.
Choose neither on a claimed safety or space win without checking the evidence
If the deciding factor is crash performance, usable cargo room or towing, verify the exact configuration and the relevant independent or manufacturer information before committing. The figures available here do not establish a definitive CR-V-versus-RAV4 winner in those categories.
Sources and model-year scope
This is a U.S.-market comparison of the 2026 model year. Honda’s model information is available on its 2026 CR-V page. Toyota’s RAV4 information appears on its 2026 RAV4 product page, full specifications page and 2026 RAV4 brochure. Toyota Motor North America also published a 2026 RAV4 announcement dated October 22, 2025. Manufacturer specifications and estimates should be checked against the exact vehicle being quoted, since trim, drivetrain and equipment affect the comparison.

Which gets better gas mileage, the 2026 CR-V or RAV4?
The available figures do not establish a direct winner. Toyota publishes up to 47 city/40 highway MPG for the 2026 RAV4, but that manufacturer estimate varies by trim and drivetrain. Compare the EPA labels for the exact CR-V and RAV4 configurations you are considering, using city with city, highway with highway, and combined with combined.
Is the 2026 Honda CR-V cheaper than the Toyota RAV4?
The listed entry-trim starting MSRP is $30,920 for the CR-V LX and $31,900 for the RAV4 LE, so the CR-V’s starting price is $980 lower. These are not out-the-door quotes or proof that equivalent equipment costs less. Compare the actual grades and itemized local prices, including delivery, taxes, accessories and incentives.
Which has more cargo space?
Toyota lists up to 37.8 cubic feet of RAV4 cargo capacity. A matching CR-V figure and measurement basis are not established here, so that number alone cannot identify the roomier SUV. Try your usual cargo in both vehicles and check the opening, floor shape and lift-over height.
Does the 2026 RAV4 come as a plug-in hybrid?
Toyota describes the 2026 RAV4 range as including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, with drivetrain availability depending on grade. Check the specifications for the exact trim and consider whether regular charging fits your routine. The comparison here does not establish a comparable CR-V plug-in hybrid.

Which SUV is safer?
The manufacturers name Honda Sensing for the CR-V and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 for the RAV4, but feature availability can vary by trim. Those suite names are not crash-test results, and the information here does not establish an independent safety winner for the two 2026 models. Check equipment by grade and consult current independent ratings for the exact model year.
The Bottom Line
The 2026 CR-V and RAV4 have close entry prices but different powertrain choices: Honda offers turbo gasoline and conventional hybrid CR-Vs, while Toyota describes hybrid and plug-in hybrid RAV4s. Choose the powertrain and grades that fit your routine, then compare exact EPA labels, equipment, physical space and itemized local quotes. Toyota’s published MPG, cargo and towing maximums are useful specifications to investigate, not proof of a universal win.
