Record the specified front and rear sizes, then choose a tire category suited to the coldest, wettest, or otherwise most demanding conditions you expect to drive in. Keep the factory staggered setup unless the manufacturer approves an alternative: a wider rear tire is not automatically an upgrade, and a size change can affect vehicle systems as well as fitment.
How do you find the right sizes for your car?
Identify the car’s year, make, model, trim, wheel size, and whether it still has its original wheel package. Then check the driver-side door-jamb placard and owner’s manual. Record the front and rear tire sizes separately, along with the recommended pressures, load index, speed rating, and any manufacturer-approved alternate sizes.

Michelin calls the placard the most reliable reference for the manufacturer’s recommended tire size and inflation pressure in its guide to choosing tire size. A used car’s existing tires are not proof of correct fitment; they may differ from the original or approved package.
Why might a rear-wheel-drive performance car have different tires front and rear?
A staggered setup—different sizes front and rear, often with wider tires at the rear—can be specified by the manufacturer. Treat the two axles as a matched package, not as an invitation to choose a wider rear tire for appearance or presumed grip. Keep the specified setup unless the vehicle maker confirms an alternate fitment for the exact trim and wheel package.

Staggering usually prevents direct front-to-rear rotation because the tires are different sizes. Directional tread can limit rotation options further. That affects how you manage wear and may mean planning for axle-specific replacements rather than assuming all four tires can be moved around.
Should you use the factory size or an alternate?
The factory size is the straightforward choice. If you are considering a different size or wheel, have the complete fitment checked for the exact car before buying. The relevant questions include whether the tire fits the wheel width, maintains adequate load-carrying capacity, and has a suitable overall diameter.

Changing tire or wheel diameter can affect gearing, traction and stability-control systems, braking, and speedometer readings. Do not reduce the specified load capacity, and do not assume that a tire that physically clears the body is compatible with the vehicle. Michelin’s tire-size guidance and Tire Rack’s plus-sizing overview explain why size changes involve more than width or appearance.

Choose for the worst conditions the car will encounter, not just the dry, warm roads on which a performance tire may feel most at home. A car driven year-round needs a different compromise from one stored in winter or used only in warm weather. Consider these trade-offs when comparing tires in a category suitable for your climate:

| Factor | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Season and temperature | Summer, all-season, and winter tires are intended for different conditions. Some performance tires are less capable in cold weather; choose for the cold and snow the car is likely to face. |
| Wet and dry behavior | Compare wet grip as well as dry response. A tire chosen only for dry-road feel may not suit frequent rain. |
| Grip and tread life | Performance-oriented grip can come with shorter tread life and lower fuel efficiency. Decide which trade-off matches your use. |
| Comfort and noise | Ride comfort and road noise matter on a street car, even when sharp response is a priority. |
| Street or track use | For occasional track sessions, check that the tire is suitable for the conditions and demands involved; do not assume a street performance tire is the right choice for every track use. |
There is no universally best performance tire without the vehicle’s exact fitment, climate, and intended use. Compare candidates within the appropriate seasonal category on wet grip, dry response, cold suitability, comfort, noise, and expected tread life. Michelin’s overview of tire types, Tire Rack’s tire-selection guide, and Michelin’s seasonal tire guidance describe the main category trade-offs.

First check the vehicle and tire manufacturers’ instructions, and confirm that the replacement pair matches the car’s fitment requirements. Tire Rack recommends putting new tires on the rear axle when replacing a pair on a square setup—the same size at all four corners—because that placement helps wet-weather stability. Its advice should not be applied automatically to a staggered car, where axle sizes and manufacturer guidance control the replacement plan.

For a staggered setup, confirm which tire size belongs on each axle and whether the tires can be rotated at all. If wear differs between axles, use the car’s instructions and a qualified fitment check rather than moving an incompatible pair front to rear.
