How to Choose Tires for a 250cc Scrambler for On- and Off-Road Riding

A 250cc engine does not determine tire size. Verify your scrambler’s approved front and rear dimensions, ratings, construction, pressure guidance, and local road approval, then match the tread to your real mix of pavement, gravel, dirt, sand, and mud.

Start with the motorcycle’s approved front and rear tire dimensions, load indices, speed ratings, construction, and road-use approval. A 250cc engine does not determine tire fitment: wheel diameter, rim width, chassis clearance, model year, and the manufacturer’s homologation do. Once those details are confirmed, select a road-priority, balanced dual-sport, or dirt-priority pattern according to the surfaces you actually ride. Michelin’s guidance is to respect the motorcycle’s homologated dimensions for road use; its pressure guidance also distinguishes sealed-road pressures from off-road settings. Pirelli’s SCORPION RALLY STR and MT 60 illustrate two different mixed-use approaches, but either is only a candidate until the exact motorcycle and jurisdiction are checked.

What “250cc scrambler” does—and does not—tell you

Engine displacement is a poor shortcut for tire selection. Two motorcycles with 250cc engines can use different front and rear wheel diameters, rim widths, tire constructions, load indices, speed ratings, and tube arrangements. Even different model years of the same motorcycle may have different approved dimensions. A tire that appears physically close can alter steering, suspension clearance, braking behavior, or the accuracy of the speedometer.

For road riding, Michelin says to respect the motorcycle’s homologated dimensions. Read the owner’s manual, the certification label, and the markings on the tires currently fitted. Treat the motorcycle manufacturer’s specification as the controlling reference, not a generic “250cc scrambler” size chart. Michelin’s selection guide explains that intended use and dimensions are key criteria: How to choose the right tyres for your motorcycle.

Step 1: Build a precise fitment record before shopping

Write down the complete specification for both wheels. Do not assume the front and rear use the same construction or rating, and do not replace a tube-type arrangement with a tubeless setup unless the motorcycle and wheel manufacturer explicitly permit it.

  • Front and rear size: copy every part of the marking, including width, aspect ratio, rim diameter, and any special suffix.
  • Load index: the number associated with the maximum permitted load for that tire. The replacement must meet or exceed the motorcycle manufacturer’s requirement.
  • Speed rating: the letter or letter-and-number code. Do not reduce it below the approved rating without written manufacturer or legal guidance.
  • Construction: note bias-ply, belted, or radial designation when shown.
  • Tube requirement: identify whether the rim is approved for tubeless use or requires a tube. A tubeless tire on a tube-type rim is not automatically a safe conversion.
  • Wheel and clearance details: record rim width, fender and swingarm clearance, and whether accessories such as a high front mudguard leave adequate space for the intended tread.
  • Jurisdiction: check the road-use marking and local approval rules where the motorcycle is registered and ridden.

Use the sidewall as a cross-check, not as the sole authority. A previous owner may have installed a non-approved size. If the manual, certification label, and current tire disagree, pause the purchase and ask an authorized dealer or the motorcycle manufacturer to resolve the discrepancy.

How to read a tire marking

A marking such as 110/80-19 59H is an illustration of the information encoded on a sidewall, not a recommendation for any particular scrambler. The first number is nominal width in millimetres, the second is aspect ratio as a percentage of width, the number after the hyphen identifies rim diameter in inches, and the final number-and-letter combination represents load index and speed rating. Some markings add tube-type or tubeless indicators, reinforced construction, or other manufacturer-specific symbols. Copy the complete marking exactly before comparing products.

Match the tire category to your actual surfaces

“On and off road” covers everything from occasional hard-packed gravel to sustained mud and loose rocky trails. A tire that feels secure on pavement can be difficult in mud; an open, flexible tread that finds grip in dirt can feel noisy, vague, or quick to wear on asphalt. Choose the category by the most demanding surface you ride regularly while preserving enough road capability for the distance and speed required to reach it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Riding pattern What to prioritize Trade-offs to expect
Mostly pavement, occasional maintained gravel Continuous or closely spaced center tread, stable road casing, predictable wet-road behavior, and the approved road rating Less bite in loose soil, deep ruts, or mud
Regular pavement and mixed gravel, dirt roads, and light trails A balanced dual-sport tread with enough void to clear dirt while retaining a stable center and shoulder transition More noise and vibration than a street tire; less ultimate pavement grip than a road-focused pattern
Frequent rocky, sandy, or loose-surface trails with connecting roads More open blocks, reinforced off-road-oriented construction, and a pattern designed to drive and brake on loose ground Shorter or less predictable road life, increased noise, and more careful pressure management on sealed roads
Regular mud or deep sand Self-cleaning, widely spaced tread and a casing suited to low-speed off-road control Compromised high-speed road manners; legal and road-approval limits may be significant

Weather changes the choice. Frequent rain and cold pavement favor a design with dependable road contact and a compound intended for sealed surfaces. Dry, loose terrain rewards void between blocks and edges that can penetrate the surface. If your route includes long highway sections before a short trail, treat those highway miles as a major design requirement rather than an afterthought.

Use manufacturer descriptions as a starting comparison

Pirelli’s catalogs cover on-road, off-road, trail-road, adventure, and scrambler applications. The descriptions below show how two mixed-use products can occupy different positions; they do not establish fitment for an unidentified 250cc motorcycle.

Example Manufacturer’s positioning What that means for your decision What remains to be verified
SCORPION RALLY STR Pirelli describes it as combining off-road capability with road performance for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles. Investigate it when you need a deliberate balance between pavement travel and off-road function rather than a purely street pattern. Exact front and rear dimensions, load and speed ratings, construction, tube compatibility, and road approval for your motorcycle and country.
MT 60 Pirelli describes it as a road-oriented knobby tire for lighter trail bikes with dirt-road capability. Investigate it when road manners are the priority but you still ride unpaved roads and light trails. Exact fitment, ratings, construction, tube requirements, and legal approval for the specific motorcycle and jurisdiction.

See Pirelli’s enduro motorcycle tire catalog and its motorcycle catalog. Catalog positioning is not a substitute for a fitment listing. If the approved size is absent, do not force a substitution simply because the tread looks appropriate.

Choose the front and rear as a working pair

Front and rear tires perform different jobs. The front establishes steering precision, braking feel, and resistance to deflection in ruts. The rear supplies drive and must carry the combined motorcycle, rider, passenger, and luggage load. A matching model is not mandatory in every application, but the pair should have compatible intended use and approved ratings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Road-priority front with a very aggressive rear: can produce an uneven transition between steering and drive grip, especially on wet pavement or hard-packed dirt.
  • Aggressive front with a road-biased rear: may give confident turn-in while the rear spins or steps out when climbing loose ground.
  • Mixed models: use only when both manufacturers or a qualified tire specialist identify the combination as suitable for the motorcycle. Confirm rotation arrows and front/rear designation independently.

Keep the approved front and rear dimensions even when changing brands. Never mount a front-designated tire on the rear or reverse a rotation arrow to make a pattern fit.

Ratings, construction, and wheel compatibility

Load and speed ratings

The load index must cover the motorcycle’s maximum permitted load, including rider, passenger, fuel, luggage, and accessories. The speed rating must meet the motorcycle manufacturer’s requirement and the law where you ride. A tire’s advertised off-road character does not waive those requirements. If a catalog lists several variants of the same nominal size, compare the complete rating string rather than selecting by width alone.

Bias-ply, belted, and radial construction

Construction affects casing flex, heat management, steering response, and the way the tire works with the rim. Use the construction approved for your wheel and motorcycle. A different construction can change the tire’s profile even when the nominal size appears identical, so clearance and handling approval still matter.

Tube-type and tubeless systems

Confirm the rim’s design before ordering. A tube-type tire may require a tube even when a similar tubeless version exists; a tubeless tire does not make a tube-type rim tubeless. Use the tube size and valve arrangement specified for the wheel, and replace a damaged or aged tube rather than fitting it to a new tire by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set pressure for the motorcycle, load, and surface

Begin with the motorcycle manufacturer’s pressure recommendation for the load you are carrying. Check pressure with the tires cold, before riding has warmed them. Michelin’s motorcycle tyre pressure guide, updated February 10, 2025, explains that off-road pressure recommendations are constrained by duration, speed, and load when the motorcycle must use sealed high-speed roads. Michelin advises increasing pressure for unavoidable road use and avoiding prolonged road riding at off-road settings.

  • ✅【360° FREE ROTATION】 - With an adjustable swivel ball joint, you can rotate your smartphone or device at your own will, providing the best viewing angle. Quickly pick and place with one hand, free your hands and make calls and GPS navigation more convenient
  • Road sections: use the motorcycle maker’s road pressure for the actual load. Do not lower pressure merely to make a knobby tire feel softer.
  • Low-speed dirt: any adjustment should remain within the tire and motorcycle manufacturers’ guidance and should account for rocks, rim strikes, heat, and the distance back to pavement.
  • Highway after a trail: restore the road setting before sustained or fast sealed-road travel. Off-road pressure is not a highway setting.
  • Inspection: check for cuts, exposed cords, bent rims, bead damage, and embedded objects whenever pressure is changed.

Carry a reliable pressure gauge and a way to reinflate the tires if your route requires a temporary adjustment. Do not infer a universal pressure number from tire size or engine displacement; the correct value depends on the motorcycle, tire, load, speed, and surface.

Verify road legality and availability before paying

Road approval varies by country and sometimes by tire variant. Confirm that the exact front and rear versions are approved for public-road use where the motorcycle is registered. Look for the required approval markings and consult the local regulator or an authorized dealer when the catalog language is unclear. “Enduro,” “knobby,” or “scrambler” in a product name does not by itself establish legal road use.

Availability is part of fitment. A model may exist in one wheel diameter but not the other, or in a size with a lower rating than your motorcycle requires. Check the manufacturer’s current size list for both wheels, then compare the complete designation with your fitment record. Do not accept a seller’s substitution that drops a load or speed rating, changes tube compatibility, or alters the approved rim width without documented approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A purchase workflow that prevents expensive mistakes

  1. Identify the motorcycle precisely. Record make, model, year, market, wheel sizes, and whether the wheels are spoke, cast, tube-type, or tubeless.
  2. Copy the approved front and rear markings. Include dimensions, load indices, speed ratings, construction, and any special suffixes.
  3. Describe your route. Note the proportion of pavement, gravel, hard-packed dirt, rocks, sand, and mud; include typical weather, highway distance, passenger use, and luggage.
  4. Choose a category. Select road-priority, balanced dual-sport, or dirt-priority behavior based on the most demanding surface and the amount of sealed-road travel.
  5. Shortlist catalog models. Use manufacturer descriptions such as Pirelli’s SCORPION RALLY STR and MT 60 only to understand intended use.
  6. Check both ends of the bike. Verify that the same model or planned pair is offered in the approved front and rear sizes and ratings.
  7. Confirm construction and legality. Check tube or tubeless compatibility, rim-width requirements, approval markings, and local road rules for the exact variant.
  8. Confirm pressure guidance. Read the tire maker’s instructions and retain the motorcycle manufacturer’s road-pressure specification for your load.
  9. Have the tires installed correctly. Follow rotation arrows, use the specified tube where required, protect the bead, balance the assembly, and inspect valve and rim condition.
  10. Recheck after installation. Verify cold pressure, bead seating, clearance, and that nothing contacts the fender, fork, swingarm, chain, or brake components through the suspension’s movement.

Mounting, first rides, and ongoing checks

Use a technician familiar with motorcycle tires, especially for spoked wheels, tubes, or unusual scrambler conversions. The installer should confirm the rim is undamaged, clean the bead seat, fit the correct tube if required, balance the wheel, and torque fasteners to the motorcycle manufacturer’s specification. Do not use a tire with a damaged bead, visible casing injury, or unclear history.

For the first rides, use conservative speeds and progressively sample the surfaces you intend to ride. Pay attention to straight-line stability, steering effort, braking feel, drive traction, vibration, and whether the tire tracks grooves or ruts. A different tread profile can make the motorcycle turn more quickly or more slowly even when the nominal dimensions match. Stop and investigate rubbing, sudden pressure loss, unusual wobble, or a repeating thump.

Inspect before every significant trip and after rocky or muddy sections. Remove stones and other objects from the tread, look for cuts or missing blocks, and check cold pressure. Uneven wear can indicate incorrect pressure, wheel alignment, worn bearings, suspension problems, overloading, or a riding surface outside the tire’s intended use. Replace the tire when the wear indicator, damage, age guidance, or local regulation requires it; do not wait for a puncture on a remote trail.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by engine size alone

Problem: buying a commonly advertised “250cc” size without checking the motorcycle’s homologation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: return to the manual, certification label, and complete front/rear markings. Treat displacement only as a broad description of the engine, never as a tire specification.

Maximizing dirt tread while ignoring road distance

Problem: selecting the most open pattern for a short trail and then riding long, fast sealed-road sections at an unsuitable pressure or speed.

Correction: include every connecting road in the use case. Choose a tire with the required road approval and use the road pressure recommended for the motorcycle and load.

Assuming a knobby tire is automatically better off road

Problem: treating appearance as proof of performance in every soil type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: match void, block shape, casing, and pressure guidance to the actual terrain. A road-oriented knobby can be appropriate for dirt roads but not for sustained mud or deep sand.

Mixing incompatible variants

Problem: pairing tires with different ratings, constructions, intended uses, or tube requirements because they share a nominal width.

Correction: verify the complete designation at both ends and obtain qualified advice before mixing models. Keep the front and rear roles coherent.

Lowering pressure without a plan

Problem: using an off-road setting on pavement, carrying heavy luggage at a low setting, or forgetting to reinflate before highway travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: follow the motorcycle and tire makers’ guidance, check cold pressure, account for load and speed, and restore the road setting before sustained sealed-road riding.

A decision checklist for your final shortlist

  • Does the exact tire exist in the motorcycle’s approved front and rear dimensions?
  • Do both tires meet or exceed the required load indices and speed ratings?
  • Are construction, rim width, tube or tubeless arrangement, and clearance compatible?
  • Does the tread suit your most demanding regular surface without sacrificing the road distance you must cover?
  • Is the exact variant approved for public-road use in your jurisdiction?
  • Are the manufacturer’s pressure instructions consistent with the motorcycle’s road specification and your expected load?
  • Can you obtain both tires, the correct tube or valve parts, and a reliable way to check or restore pressure?
  • Have you planned how you will inspect, repair, or replace the tires away from home?

If any answer is unknown, the purchase is not ready. Obtain the motorcycle’s make, model, year, current tire markings, and riding jurisdiction before asking for a size or legal-approval recommendation.
