Confirm the same size on the existing tire sidewall, then choose a replacement with at least the original load capacity and an equal-or-higher speed capability. For reference only, a Goodyear fitment page lists 285/70R17 for the 2025 Power Wagon; that size is not a universal answer for every model year or configuration.
Your use determines the appropriate tread type, but no tire can be selected safely until size, load rating, speed rating, pressure and vehicle clearance are verified. A different size can alter steering, handling, braking, suspension behavior and speedometer or odometer readings. Have a qualified tire or Ram dealer confirm any alternate-size proposal before you buy.

What to verify before shopping
The most reliable specification is the label fitted to your truck. On a Ram 2500 Power Wagon, look on the driver-side door jamb or door area for the Tire and Loading Information placard. The 2025 Ram owner’s manual describes this placard as the source for the vehicle’s tire size, cold inflation pressure and loading information.

Write down the complete designation printed on each tire, including any LT prefix, load-range letter, load index and speed symbol. A designation such as LT285/70R17 describes a light-truck tire 285 millimeters wide, with a sidewall height equal to 70 percent of that width, radial construction and a 17-inch wheel diameter. The numbers alone do not tell you whether two tires have the same load capacity; the load index or load range must also match the truck’s requirement.

Confirm the model year and configuration
Power Wagon fitment has to be checked by year, wheel package and configuration. Goodyear’s 2025 Ram 2500 Power Wagon listing shows 285/70R17, while Ram’s detailed snow-traction table in the 2022 owner’s manual includes several sizes. Those references demonstrate why a listing for one year cannot be copied to another truck. If the placard and an online catalog disagree, pause the purchase and ask a qualified tire professional or Ram dealer to reconcile the difference.
Understand the size code and the ratings
Size is more than width
The first number is nominal section width in millimeters. The aspect-ratio number describes sidewall height as a percentage of width. R indicates radial construction, and the final number is the wheel diameter in inches. Changing any of these dimensions changes the tire’s outside diameter, section width, sidewall flex and relationship to the wheel well.
Two tires that both appear to be “17-inch” tires can still differ in overall diameter, width, load capacity and clearance. The replacement must physically fit the wheel and suspension, clear steering components through their full range of motion and remain within the vehicle’s approved capability.
Load index and load range
The load index is a numerical capacity code; the load-range letter is a separate designation used on many light-truck tires. Use the placard and the original tire as the baseline. Ram’s owner’s manual states: Never use a tire with a smaller load index or capacity, other than what was originally equipped on your vehicle.
In practical terms, a tire with a lower load index is not an acceptable substitute simply because its dimensions look correct.
Choose a tire capable of the truck’s loaded weight, including passengers, cargo, trailer tongue weight and any equipment mounted on the vehicle. Do not infer required capacity from the Power Wagon name or from another owner’s setup; use the truck’s own loading information.
Speed capability
Ram also calls for adequate speed capability. Select a speed rating at least equal to the original or to the approved specification for your truck. The rating is not permission to drive at that speed; it is a compatibility requirement for the tire’s construction and the vehicle’s operating envelope.

Use the placard pressure, not a generic chart
Inflate the tires cold to the pressure printed on your truck’s placard. “Cold” means the vehicle has been parked long enough for the tires to return to ambient temperature, rather than being measured immediately after driving. Front and rear pressures can differ, so read each position on the label.

Do not copy a pressure from another Power Wagon, a tire-maker’s generic lookup page or an internet forum. A Michelin vehicle lookup, for example, can display LT285/70R17/D options and pressure figures without clearly establishing which model years those values apply to; it also warns that displayed ratings may differ from the vehicle label. Those figures cannot replace your truck’s placard.
Check pressure with a reliable gauge when the tires are cold and recheck after installation. If the placard is missing or unreadable, obtain the correct information from a Ram dealer or qualified tire professional using the vehicle identification details before setting pressures or carrying a load.
Match the tire to how you drive
The sources establish the fitment and safety constraints, but they do not provide comparative tests proving that one tread design is quieter, lasts longer, saves fuel or performs better off-road than another. Treat category labels as a way to describe priorities, not as a universal ranking.
Mostly pavement and commuting
For a Power Wagon used primarily on paved roads, look for a tire whose manufacturer documentation lists the placard size, required load capacity and adequate speed capability. Review the tread pattern and service description for your expected conditions, then compare independent warranties and documented specifications. Avoid choosing a lower-capacity tire merely to obtain a particular appearance or price.
Frequent trails and rocky terrain
For regular off-road use, prioritize a tire explicitly approved in the placard size and load requirement, with construction and sidewall protection suited to the terrain you actually encounter. Confirm that the tread and sidewall design do not create clearance problems at full steering lock or suspension movement. A more aggressive-looking tire is not automatically approved for the vehicle or adequate for its loaded weight.

Snow and ice
Choose a tire whose manufacturer identifies it for the winter conditions in your region, while retaining the original size and capacity unless an approved alternative has been confirmed. Dedicated winter tires, all-terrain tires with a winter designation and other options involve different compromises in dry-road behavior, noise and seasonal storage; the correct choice depends on your climate and use. The vehicle placard and owner’s manual still control size and pressure.
Towing, payload and work use
When the truck regularly carries heavy cargo or tows, capacity takes priority over cosmetic changes. Verify the tire’s load index and any applicable load-range information against the placard, and account for the heaviest axle loading you expect. A tire that fits the wheel but has less capacity than the original fails the basic replacement requirement.
When an alternate size is being considered
Changing size can be appropriate only after the complete vehicle-and-wheel combination has been checked. Ram warns that replacing the original tires with a different size may produce false speedometer and odometer readings. The change can also affect steering, handling, braking and suspension behavior.

- Does the proposed size meet or exceed the original load index or capacity?
- Is its speed capability adequate for the vehicle?
- Does it fit the wheel width and retain safe bead seating?
- Is there clearance at full left and right steering lock, through suspension compression and around brake and suspension components?
- Will the resulting diameter change the speedometer and odometer readings?
- Does the vehicle maker approve the size for this model year and configuration?
Do not treat a catalog’s “fits Power Wagon” result as proof that it fits every year. Ask the tire shop to document the exact year, wheel size, proposed tire designation, load index and clearance assessment on the estimate.
Snow chains and other traction devices
Traction devices require a separate fitment check. Ram’s 2022 owner’s manual says clearance is limited, the device must be the proper size for the installed tire and no other tire sizes are recommended for the listed device use. Its Power Wagon table lists:

- Read the owner’s manual for your exact model year and configuration.
- Identify the tire’s complete sidewall designation, including load-range information.
- Check the device manufacturer’s fitment chart for that exact designation.
- Confirm the manual’s clearance restrictions and any axle-position instructions.
- Install the device on a dry, safe surface before an emergency and verify that it does not contact suspension, brake or body components.
If the manual and device chart do not agree, do not improvise with a different size or a thicker device. Obtain a direct fitment decision from the vehicle or tire manufacturer.
A step-by-step tire-buying process
- Record the vehicle identity. Note the model year, Power Wagon configuration, wheel diameter and whether the truck has factory or non-factory wheels.
- Photograph the placard. Capture the tire size, front and rear cold pressures and loading information on the driver-side door area.
- Read every sidewall code. Record the complete size, load index, load-range letter and speed symbol from the current tires.
- Decide the primary use. Rank pavement driving, trail work, winter conditions and heavy loading rather than trying to optimize an unknown “best” tire.
- Filter by approved size first. Eliminate any model that does not match the placard or an alternate size specifically approved for your year and configuration.
- Check capacity and speed. Confirm that the candidate’s load index or capacity is not lower than the original and that its speed capability is adequate.
- Check physical clearance. Have a qualified installer verify wheel, brake, suspension and body clearance, particularly if the size or wheel is not original.
- Compare documented specifications. Review the tire maker’s service description, winter markings where relevant, warranty terms and any restrictions for towing or commercial use. Do not treat marketing adjectives as test results.
- Get a written quote. Include four tires, mounting, balancing, valve or sensor service if required, disposal and any alignment or clearance work that the inspection actually identifies. Prices are location- and tire-specific, so there is no single defensible total for every Power Wagon.
- Set the cold pressures after installation. Use the truck’s placard values, not the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall and not a generic online table.
- Recheck before carrying weight. Inspect for leaks, confirm that all tires are at the prescribed cold pressure and drive slowly at first while listening for contact or vibration.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying the size shown for a different year
Problem: A listing displays 285/70R17 for a 2025 Power Wagon, so the buyer assumes every Power Wagon uses it.
Correction: Verify the placard and sidewall on the actual truck. The 2025 listing is a model-year reference only.
Choosing a lower-capacity tire because it is cheaper
Problem: The dimensions match, but the load index is lower.
Correction: Reject it. Ram specifically prohibits using a tire with a smaller load index or capacity than originally equipped.
Setting pressure from the tire sidewall or a web table
Problem: The tire’s molded maximum or another vehicle’s setting is used as the operating pressure.

Correction: Set cold pressure to the vehicle placard. If the label is missing, obtain the vehicle-specific value before driving with a load.
Assuming a larger tire is automatically better off-road
Problem: A larger or more aggressive tire is installed without checking readings, clearance or capacity.
Correction: Have the alternate size evaluated for the complete vehicle. Account for speedometer and odometer error, steering and suspension effects, braking behavior and physical clearance.

Buying chains first and checking fit later
Problem: The device fits the nominal wheel diameter but not the actual tire or available clearance.
Correction: Match the exact tire designation to both the applicable owner’s manual and the device maker’s chart. Ram’s 2022 table cannot be assumed to govern another year.

What the available model-year references establish
For the 2025 truck, Goodyear’s fitment page identifies 285/70R17 and directs owners to the tire sidewall or the inside of the driver-side door jamb to find their size. Ram’s 2025 manual identifies the Tire and Loading Information placard as the authority for size, cold pressure and loading information.
Ram’s 2022 manual provides the detailed replacement-tire warning and the snow-traction table quoted above. Because the article topic does not specify a year, those 2022 details must remain tied to that manual. They are useful examples of the checks required, not proof that the same device sizes or approvals apply to a 2025 or earlier truck.
