Choose a riding mower by matching the area you actually mow to its slopes, obstacles, access width, storage space, and any chores beyond cutting grass. A lawn tractor is a familiar, versatile choice for open ground; a zero-turn can save maneuvering around obstacles on suitable terrain; and a compact rear-engine rider may fit a smaller yard or tight storage space. Acreage charts are only starting points. For hills, the specific mower’s manual and slope limits take priority over speed or deck size.
Start with the lawn you actually mow
Lot size can mislead: subtract the house, driveway, gardens, woods, and other areas you do not routinely cut. The remaining mowable area is a better basis for estimating mowing time and choosing a machine.

Manufacturers do not use one universal acreage cutoff. Husqvarna says riding and zero-turn mowers suit yards of up to two acres or more, while Troy-Bilt describes lawn tractors for large yards ranging from under one acre to two acres. Those are broad category guides, not guarantees that a particular mower will suit every yard of that size. ( Troy-Bilt; Husqvarna )

Lawn tractor: familiar steering and useful versatility
A lawn tractor has a steering wheel and steerable front wheels, which may feel more familiar than separate drive levers. It is a practical option for open, straightforward mowing and may support compatible attachments for other yard work. Troy-Bilt describes lawn tractors as suitable for flat ground and hills or slight inclines; Toro emphasizes open, flat lawns. These category descriptions do not establish a safe slope limit for an individual machine. (Troy-Bilt; Toro)
#1 Best Overall
- PEAK POWER TECHNOLOGY: Combines power of up to six EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries to deliver up to 20,000 watts of power, equivalent to a 21-horsepower gas engine.
- LONG RUNTIME: Cordless tractor cuts up to 1.5 acres on a single charge with six included 6.0Ah batteries.
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR RIDE: Digital LCD display includes three blade settings, three drive speeds, and cruise control. Mows at up to 6 MPH.
- TWELVE CUTTING HEIGHT POSITIONS: Easily adjust the cutting deck on the electric riding mower to get the grass height you want, anywhere from 1.5 to 4.5 inches.
- REAR TOW HITCH: Haul loads around your property with Power Beyond Belief.
Zero-turn mower: efficient maneuvering around obstacles
Separate drive controls allow a zero-turn to make tight turns around trees and landscaping. That maneuverability can help on a larger, relatively open lawn with frequent obstacles, but does not make the mower suitable for every hill. Troy-Bilt describes zero-turns for larger, flat to slightly hilly layouts, and Husqvarna cautions about steeper grades. Confirm the exact model’s operating instructions before considering one for sloped ground. (Troy-Bilt; Husqvarna)
Compact rear-engine rider: a fit for tighter spaces
A rear-engine rider may be worth considering when the property is smaller or storage is limited. Toro characterizes this category as compact. Check the dimensions and turning space of the actual model: a compact category label does not guarantee that it will pass through your gate or fit your shed.

Electric or gas: compare the specific machine and mowing session
Toro describes electric riding mowers as quieter and simpler to maintain, while gas machines are commonly used for longer sessions. Treat these as category-level tradeoffs, not a substitute for checking the model’s runtime or refueling needs, charging arrangements, and service requirements. Consider how long a typical mowing session lasts and whether the machine’s controls and seat will remain comfortable for it. (Toro)

A wider deck covers more ground with each pass, which can be useful on an open lawn. A narrower deck may be easier to maneuver around landscaping, fit through a passage, or store. Measure the narrowest gate and storage entrance, and allow for turning room as well as the deck’s stated width.

| Guide | Approximate deck-width advice | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Troy-Bilt | 34- or 42-inch decks for under an acre; 50- or 54-inch decks for yards of several acres. | Use as an example of that manufacturer’s guidance, not a rule for every yard or model. |
| Briggs & Stratton | 30–40 inches for up to 1½ acres; 40–48 inches for 1½–3 acres; 48–61 inches for 3 acres or more. | These acreage bands differ from Troy-Bilt’s, illustrating why deck charts are starting points. |

Make slope safety the deciding factor on hills
Do not assume that a riding mower is appropriate for a slope simply because it can climb it. The operator’s manual and the model’s stated slope limits are the controlling references for that mower and conditions. UGA Extension Forsyth County’s general guidance, published March 28, 2025, says riding mowers are unsafe on slopes greater than 27 percent. That is not a universal model specification or a replacement for the manual. UGA explains slope as rise divided by run; if you cannot confidently assess the ground or control the mower, use another method. (UGA Extension Forsyth County)

- Cleaner, more even cuts than gas with constant 17K ft/min blade speed
- Out-cut traditional gas-powered mowers and conquer 2.5 acres with an industry-leading 8mph mowing speed
- 4X quieter than gas with LED Lights for early morning and late evening mowing
- Industry's only rear storage bin with universal front and rear attachment capability
- Removable battery isn't limited to just the mower—it's compatible with over 75 other Greenworks 60v tools
- On slopes the mower’s manual considers safe, UGA advises mowing up and down, and turning on level ground at the top or bottom rather than making a turn on the slope.
- The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation, advises mowing vertically rather than across a slope and avoiding stopping, starting, shifting, or turning there where possible.
- Use a walk-behind mower or string trimmer near edges where a riding mower could go over or lose support, as the Texas safety fact sheet advises.
- For steep areas unsuitable for mowing, University of Minnesota Extension identifies alternative groundcovers or no-mow grassed slopes as options.

UGA’s article also reports a historical estimate of more than 91,800 people treated in U.S. emergency rooms or hospitals for mower-related injuries, based on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2018 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System estimate and data from 96 hospitals. It is not a current annual injury count.

A lawn tractor may support lightweight attachments such as a bagger, cart, spreader, or snow plow. Garden tractors are designed for heavier tools such as tillers. Briggs & Stratton also lists sweepers, aerators, snow blowers, and tire chains among possible add-ons. Attachment availability and capacity vary: before buying, verify compatibility with the exact mower, towing limits, setup requirements, and instructions in the manual. (Troy-Bilt; Briggs & Stratton)
Use this checklist to compare actual models
- Mowable area and time: How much lawn will you cut regularly, and how long does a typical session take?
- Terrain and traction: Are there slopes, uneven patches, or areas where the manual rules out riding use?
- Obstacles and turning: Will steering-wheel controls or zero-turn controls suit the yard’s trees, beds, and tight corners?
- Access and storage: Does the deck fit through every gate and into the storage space, with room to turn?
- Controls and comfort: Can you operate the controls confidently and sit comfortably for the full session?
- Power and upkeep: Does the model’s runtime or refueling arrangement suit your mowing schedule, and are you prepared for its service needs?
- Other chores: Are the attachments you want approved for that model and within its limits?
Manufacturers’ comparisons can help narrow the category, but the final decision depends on the individual yard and model. Toro’s FAQ frames the central comparison plainly: a zero-turn is not automatically better than a lawn tractor; each suits different layouts and priorities. (Toro)
