Maintain a riding mower by checking its oil, air filter, blades and safety equipment before use; completing the oil, filter, lubrication and wear-item service specified for its hours or season; and cleaning and preparing it properly before storage. The exact interval, oil, parts, torque values and storage steps depend on the mower and engine, so use both operator’s manuals rather than treating any one schedule as universal.
Start with the right manual and a safe setup
Find the operator’s manual for the exact mower and the manual for its engine. The mower manual governs machine-specific checks, compatible parts and procedures; the engine manual supplies engine-specific fluid and service requirements. Troy-Bilt directs owners to its model manual for detailed maintenance, and Briggs & Stratton likewise recommends starting with the engine manual. Manufacturer schedules differ, so use the hour meter and the schedule for your model, not a generic calendar interval. Troy-Bilt’s riding mower maintenance guidance and Briggs & Stratton’s tune-up guide both emphasize model-specific instructions.

Before inspecting or servicing the mower, park it on a level surface, shut the engine off and let hot parts cool. Remove the key, disengage the PTO, set the parking brake and chock the wheels if the procedure calls for it. Follow the manual’s directions for isolating ignition or battery components, and use the protective equipment it specifies. If a job exceeds your tools or experience, have a dealer handle it.

- Check engine oil. Use the manual’s method to check the level and look for leaks. Use only the specified oil and avoid both underfilling and overfilling, which can damage the engine.
- Look over the air filter. Check that the filter element and cover are present and fitted correctly. Clean or replace the element only as the manual directs; servicing methods vary by filter and engine.
- Inspect blades and safety components. Look for visible blade damage and check that blades and mounting hardware appear secure. Inspect guards, discharge parts and any fitted catcher components. Do not mow with a damaged or missing protective component. Use the blade type specified for the mower.
- Check tires, controls and the mowing area. Follow your manual for tire pressure and control checks. Remove obstacles from the work area and confirm the machine is in suitable condition before starting.
Troy-Bilt’s schedule includes oil and air-filter checks before each use and inspection of blades and safety components. The precise check method and any adjustment or repair remain model-specific. See its maintenance schedule and tips.

During the season: service by hours and condition
Use the mower’s hour meter, maintenance chart and observed condition together. One manufacturer’s interval is not a universal interval for another mower. For example, Troy-Bilt separates tasks into before-each-use and 10-, 25-, 50- and 100-hour entries, as well as prior-to-storage items; those intervals apply to the schedule it publishes, not every riding mower.
Oil, filters and ignition parts
Change engine oil and the oil filter, service the air filter, and inspect or replace the spark plug when the applicable schedule calls for it. Check whether the fuel filter is due as well. Confirm the correct oil specification and replacement parts by mower model and engine; do not assume a part that fits a similar-looking machine is compatible.

Blades, belts, tires and lubrication
Inspect blades for damage and wear, and have them sharpened, balanced or replaced as the manual directs. Check belts and pulleys for wear, condition and tension where specified. Lubricate the fittings and moving parts identified by the manufacturer, and check tire pressure against the manual’s value.

Debris, cooling and battery
Clear grass and debris from the machine, including cooling areas when the manual calls for it. Keep battery terminals clean as directed, and follow the machine’s instructions for battery disconnection and reconnection during service. Briggs & Stratton’s tune-up guidance also covers debris removal, belt checks, lubrication, blades, oil and tire pressure; Husqvarna’s annual service guidance includes spark plugs, air filters, oil and filter, grease fittings, tires, belts, pulleys and blades. These are examples of common service items, not a substitute for your model’s interval chart. Husqvarna’s service overview

Before putting the mower away
- Secure the machine. Park on level ground, shut off the engine, let it cool, remove the key, disengage the PTO and set the parking brake. Chock the wheels if the manual’s procedure requires it. Isolate the ignition or battery only as instructed for your machine.
- Clean and inspect. Remove grass and debris from the mower and deck. Inspect blades, belts, covers, chute, deck wheels, tires and other wear items. Replace damaged parts with parts specified for the exact model.
- Complete due maintenance. Follow the manual for oil and filter changes, air-filter and spark-plug service, and other tasks due before storage. A siphon or oil-extractor pump can be useful for a procedure that calls for oil extraction, but verify it fits the engine and service method; Troy-Bilt includes a siphon pump in its own off-season procedure.
- Prepare fuel and battery as directed. Storage requirements vary by engine and mower. Follow the manual’s instructions for fuel, including whether and how to use stabilizer, and for battery care. Do not treat another brand’s steps as the correct procedure for your mower.
Troy-Bilt’s storage instructions include cleaning, inspection, oil service and fuel stabilizer as part of its procedure. Those are brand-specific directions; confirm the appropriate method in your own manual. Troy-Bilt’s off-season storage guidance

Routine visual checks and manual-directed upkeep may be within an owner’s ability, but blade removal, sharpening and balancing can require tools and safe handling. Husqvarna’s Ireland ride-on maintenance guide identifies dealer service at 200 hours or when the operator is unsure; that is guidance for the machines and context covered by that page, not a universal threshold. For a battery-powered ride-on, use its separate powertrain-specific list rather than applying gasoline-engine service steps. Husqvarna’s ride-on maintenance guide
