Start with how and where you will drive
The first decision is not AXT versus LXT versus ZXT. It is whether you need a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration or a four-wheel-drive (4WD) one. Mahindra’s published launch range includes both, but not every engine, transmission and trim combination is available in both drivetrains.

- Mostly paved roads, with no regular need for four-wheel drive: Start by comparing the RWD configurations. They give you a way to select among the listed engines and transmissions without treating 4WD as an automatic upgrade.
- Regular rough-terrain use where you expect to need 4WD: Compare the available 4WD combinations first, then choose between the offered engine, gearbox and trim options. The launch table shows both manual and automatic 4WD versions for the D22 diesel and G20 petrol.
- Occasional trips off paved roads, but uncertain need for 4WD: Be specific about the terrain and how often you expect to encounter it. The launch announcement establishes which configurations are offered; it does not establish that every buyer benefits from 4WD or quantify how a particular configuration will perform in every condition.

Think about actual use rather than the image associated with a particular configuration. Note the roads you drive most weeks, how often your planned trips involve rough terrain, and whether you expect to need 4WD regularly or only occasionally. Which Mahindra Thar variant should I buy? There is no single best answer for every buyer. A buyer who wants the entry price and is comfortable with a manual RWD has the AXT D117 CRDe at the bottom of the listed price range. Someone who needs an automatic RWD can compare the listed D22 diesel and G20 petrol combinations in LXT and ZXT. A buyer seeking a listed 4WD configuration should compare the D22 or G20 versions in LXT and ZXT. These are starting points from the published configuration table, not recommendations about which engine is more economical or more capable.
Know which Thar this guide covers
This guide covers the three-door Thar OG, announced by Mahindra on September 22, 2026 as the successor to the three-door Thar unveiled in 2020. Its launch-announcement variant labels are AXT, LXT and ZXT. It does not cover the separate five-door Thar ROXX. Make sure a quote, brochure or online listing is for the Thar OG and the model year you intend to buy before comparing equipment or prices.
That distinction matters because equipment information for an earlier Thar lineup cannot safely be carried over to the new model. Mahindra’s October 2025 announcement and its 2025 brochure relate to the prior lineup; the 2026 launch announcement is the source for the Thar OG’s launch configurations and equipment claims described here. If a dealer, listing or older review uses a familiar trim name, check that its details refer to the three-door Thar OG rather than the earlier lineup or the Thar ROXX.

The following are Mahindra’s introductory ex-showroom prices, in lakh rupees, from its September 2026 launch announcement. The table is a dated comparison point, not a guaranteed transaction quote.

MT means manual transmission and AT means automatic transmission. The listed choices are configuration-specific: the D117 CRDe is shown only as a manual RWD, while the D22 mHawk and G20 TGDi mStallion have additional drivetrain and gearbox combinations. Do not assume a trim can be ordered with every powertrain or transmission.
The table also makes clear why it is useful to compare a complete configuration rather than just a trim label. LXT and ZXT each contain several combinations, with prices that depend on engine, drivetrain and transmission. For example, the listed LXT G20 petrol spans ₹14.77 lakh for RWD automatic to ₹17.23 lakh for 4WD automatic. The listed ZXT D22 diesel ranges from ₹17.49 lakh for RWD automatic or 4WD manual to ₹18.99 lakh for 4WD automatic. Those figures describe different configurations; they do not isolate the value of one feature or prove that one option is right for a particular driver.

Some comparisons are close in the launch table, while others differ more substantially. The LXT D22 4WD manual is listed at ₹16.43 lakh, slightly below the LXT D22 RWD automatic at ₹16.49 lakh. The two ZXT D22 entries for RWD automatic and 4WD manual are both listed at ₹17.49 lakh. Do not assume that drivetrain alone explains a price difference: engine, transmission and trim also vary across many rows. Use the exact figures as published and confirm the final price with the dealer.
Choose an engine and gearbox from the combinations offered
D117 CRDe diesel: manual RWD only in the launch table
The D117 CRDe is the entry point to the announced range by price: Mahindra lists it in AXT at ₹10.32 lakh, LXT at ₹12.99 lakh and ZXT at ₹13.99 lakh, each with RWD and a manual transmission. If you want this engine, the launch table does not list an automatic or a 4WD version. Your remaining configuration choice among these entries is the trim.
This makes the D117 a straightforward shortlist if your requirements are compatible with the one listed drivetrain and gearbox: manual RWD. Do not choose it on an assumption about fuel economy, running costs or performance, because the launch materials cited here do not provide those comparisons. Instead, confirm that the configuration itself suits your needs and compare the trim equipment and final quote.
D22 mHawk diesel: RWD automatic or 4WD manual/automatic
The D22 mHawk appears in LXT and ZXT. Both trims are listed with a 4WD manual and a 4WD automatic; the RWD configuration is listed with an automatic. Choose among these based on whether 4WD fits your intended use and whether you want the listed manual or automatic. The table does not show a D22 RWD manual.
If you are considering the D22, first rule out combinations that do not match your requirements. A buyer who wants RWD and an automatic can compare the LXT and ZXT entries. Someone who wants 4WD can compare manual and automatic versions within LXT or ZXT. Only after that should you compare the associated prices and equipment. The price list does not provide a technical or fuel-use comparison between the D22 and the other engine options.

The G20 petrol is also listed in LXT and ZXT, with RWD automatic and both manual and automatic 4WD configurations. There is no petrol RWD manual listed in the announcement. Compare its prices with the corresponding D22 entries only after deciding which fuel type and configuration suit you; the launch material does not provide comparative fuel economy or ownership-cost evidence.

For a petrol buyer, the launch table therefore offers a choice between RWD automatic and 4WD manual or automatic, in either LXT or ZXT. If a petrol manual RWD is a requirement, it is not among the listed choices. Verify the live selector and dealer order details rather than assuming a combination can be specially configured.
For any engine, verify that the precise trim, drivetrain and transmission combination is selectable for your location and delivery timing. Mahindra’s live selector is the appropriate place to check current listed choices, and a dealer can confirm availability for the specific vehicle being quoted.
Decide whether AXT, LXT or ZXT is worth the difference
Mahindra’s launch announcement names AXT, LXT and ZXT, but the information available in the announcement does not establish a complete, item-by-item equipment comparison among the three trims. The prices show how the variants are positioned, but they do not tell you which specific feature is worth paying for in your use.
- Make a shortlist from drivetrain and powertrain first. Eliminate versions that do not match your 4WD, fuel-type or gearbox requirements.
- Compare the current Thar OG equipment list for the shortlisted trims. Check the exact items that matter to you in Mahindra’s current specifications or at the dealer; do not use an older model-year list as a substitute.
- Put the price difference beside the equipment difference. Decide whether the added items in a higher trim are worth their additional cost to you, rather than assuming the top trim is automatically the best fit.
- Confirm the vehicle being quoted. Match the trim and every powertrain detail on the quote to the official selector and the dealer’s order details.
For a useful trim comparison, write down the features you actually expect to use and ask the dealer to identify where each appears in the current Thar OG range. Separate a confirmed equipment difference from a feature that is merely described for the model as a whole. Then compare the price of the exact combinations you would buy. This guards against paying for a trim name or assuming a model-wide feature is packaged identically across all variants.
Mahindra reports that the Thar OG has six airbags, four disc brakes, front parking sensors, an ESP 9.3 suite, terrain modes for mud, sand and snow, and an electronic locking differential. It also describes updated suspension and damping, electric power steering and an enhanced cabin. These are manufacturer-reported features and descriptions, not independent test findings. Ask which listed features apply to the exact configuration you are considering and how they are packaged across AXT, LXT and ZXT; the launch information cited here does not establish a full trim-by-trim feature matrix.
The feature list can help you form questions, but it is not a substitute for the missing trim-by-trim matrix. Confirm the airbag count and other safety equipment for the exact vehicle, as well as the availability of the terrain modes and electronic locking differential in the version being quoted. Mahindra’s announcement establishes these as Thar OG claims, but it does not provide an independent safety rating or comparative test results. Do not translate the equipment list into an unsupported claim that one trim has a superior independent crash rating.

Check seating, passenger and cargo needs before committing
A three-door lifestyle SUV may not fit every household’s routine. Mahindra’s 2025 brochure for the earlier Thar line specifies four seats, but the 2026 Thar OG launch information does not restate seating capacity. Confirm the current model’s seating and packaging on the vehicle or in its current specification sheet, then consider how often you will carry passengers and what cargo you need to bring. Do not treat the older brochure’s figure as confirmed for the Thar OG.

As part of that check, inspect how you would use the vehicle for your ordinary passenger and cargo routines rather than assuming a three-door format will work for everyone. Bring the people or representative luggage you need to accommodate, where practical, and ask the dealer to confirm current seat count and packaging from the current specification sheet. This is a fit check, not a claim about dimensions or capacity that the launch announcement does not state.

Mahindra says the introductory ex-showroom prices apply to deliveries until November 30, 2026, and that deliveries begin October 11, 2026. Since the launch window is date-limited, confirm whether the introductory price and the selected configuration still apply when you place the order and take delivery.
The manufacturer’s live variant selector says its prices are indicative and that prices and schemes at invoicing prevail; environmental charges may apply in limited locations. Ex-showroom figures are not a local on-road quote. Ask the dealer for a written quote for your exact configuration and location, including applicable local charges and any scheme being offered, and check its validity before relying on the total.
When checking the quote, verify the trim, engine, drivetrain and transmission against the selection you intended to make. Ask the dealer to distinguish the introductory ex-showroom figure from the final amount payable, identify applicable local charges, and state which scheme or price applies at invoicing. Confirm that the quoted delivery timing falls within the stated introductory-price period if you are relying on that offer. Environmental charges may apply in limited locations, so ask whether any apply to your location rather than assuming they will or will not.

A practical way to make the final choice
- Write down your regular use. Separate ordinary paved-road driving from the rough-terrain trips for which you believe you need 4WD.
- Set the drivetrain requirement. Compare RWD first if 4WD is not a regular need; otherwise focus on the announced 4WD configurations.
- Select only from real engine-and-gearbox combinations. The launch table lists D117 as manual RWD; D22 and G20 have additional choices in LXT and ZXT.
- Compare AXT, LXT and ZXT equipment using current Thar OG information. Confirm feature availability instead of importing details from the prior lineup.
- Check practical fit in person. Verify current seating and packaging, and consider your passenger and cargo needs.
- Get a current written local quote. Check the delivery date, introductory-price eligibility, dealer schemes, local charges and the exact variant shown on the order.
A useful final cross-check is to describe your shortlist in full, not just by trim: for example, “LXT, G20 petrol, 4WD, automatic.” Ask the dealer to repeat that configuration on the quote and order details. Then compare it with the official selector, verify the equipment for that precise version, and check whether its price and delivery timing remain valid. Mahindra’s September 2026 launch announcement attributes a count of more than 4 lakh customers to Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business. This is the company’s stated figure, not an independently audited measure; it provides brand context, not a technical reason to choose one Thar OG variant over another. Mahindra’s October 2025 announcement had said the brand had more than 3 lakh owners, an older figure superseded by the newer company statement. Neither customer count establishes the suitability, reliability or value of a particular configuration.
