First, decide which update you mean
The key year depends on whether you are asking about the redesigned generation or a later model-year change:

If your question is “What year did the new Super Duty body style start?” the answer is the 2023 model year. If you are trying to confirm whether a specific truck has a feature Ford added later, identify the relevant year and feature separately. A 2023 truck can be part of the redesigned generation without having a 2025-specific item; a newer package announcement does not change the generation’s starting year.
How to check your truck’s model year and trim
1. Start with the vehicle documents
Check the registration, title, original purchase paperwork, or other vehicle records for the model year. Do not rely on the date the truck was built, first sold, or registered as a substitute: those dates can differ from its model year. A truck built or sold around a model-year transition can therefore be mistaken for a different year if you go by the calendar date alone.
Use the model year recorded for the particular vehicle as your starting point, then verify it if records conflict. Record the trim—such as XL, Lariat, or Platinum—and, if available, the cab, bed, engine, and package information. These details help you make a like-for-like comparison. A feature may be standard on one trim, optional in a package, or unavailable on another. Configurations also matter when you are comparing package availability or a specific piece of equipment.
Do not compare an XL cabin directly with a higher-trim cabin and assume that a difference proves a different generation. Ford’s 2023 announcement, for example, lists an 8-inch center display as standard on XL and a 12-inch center display as standard on higher trims. The truck’s trim changes what you should expect to see. When a feature seems absent, check whether it was standard, optional, or listed for that particular trim and year before treating the absence as evidence.
3. Verify uncertain records with Ford or a dealer
If the paperwork is missing, inconsistent, or unclear, ask Ford or a Ford dealer to confirm the model year and equipment from the vehicle’s records. The Ford announcements cited here do not establish one VIN-character rule that works universally across relevant markets and configurations. A VIN can be useful when requesting a vehicle-specific lookup, but do not treat a single character as conclusive without confirmation for that truck.

This step is especially useful when the truck has been modified, has equipment from more than one package, or is being described in a sale listing using broad terms such as “new body style.” A vehicle-specific record can help resolve what the truck was built or equipped with; visible parts alone may not establish the original model year or specification. If you are buying, compare the seller’s description with the documents and the confirmed trim and configuration before relying on a feature claim.
What identifies the 2023 redesigned Super Duty?
Ford’s September 27, 2022 announcement identifies the 2023 model as the all-new Super Duty. Ford said it was “Redesigned inside and out” and described an all-new exterior with seven grille designs, signature “C-clamp” lighting, functional long side vents, and a revised interior and technology offering. These are cross-checks, not a universal visual checklist: Ford’s announcement describes variation by trim, and one truck will not necessarily show every listed feature.
Use several clues together. Look at the overall exterior styling, then check the lighting, grille treatment, long side vents, and cabin against material for the truck’s stated year and trim. The point is not to find one magic part that appears on every redesigned truck. Ford documented multiple grille designs and trim-dependent equipment, so a valid comparison needs to allow for those differences.
Use the cabin as a supporting clue
Ford announced an 8-inch center display as standard on XL and a 12-inch center display as standard on higher trims, along with a customizable 12-inch digital instrument cluster. Compare the display and other cabin equipment with the documentation for the truck’s exact trim and model year. A screen size alone cannot establish the generation, since trim and equipment matter.
The cabin is valuable as a second line of comparison because the 2023 changes were not limited to the body. Ford described a revised interior and technology offering alongside the exterior redesign. Still, do not make the screen your sole test: a particular display expectation depends on trim, and Ford’s public description does not turn one display size into a universal marker for every truck.
Ford also described new camera views and towing-related technology as part of the 2023 offering. Do not identify the generation from one exterior detail
A grille design, lighting signature, or side vent can help you compare a truck with Ford’s 2023 material, but none should stand alone as proof. Ford listed seven new grille designs, so the redesigned generation does not have just one grille appearance. Packages and trim differences also affect what a specific vehicle looks like.
The same caution applies to photographs. A close-up of a grille or headlamp may omit the cabin, trim, and configuration details needed to make a fair comparison. A photo can point you toward the right questions, but a listing image alone may not establish model year. If exterior cues appear to conflict with a seller’s stated year, verify the truck’s paperwork and records instead of choosing whichever clue looks more convincing.
How the 2025 and 2027 changes differ from the redesign
2025: later model-year changes
Ford’s September 24, 2024 announcement listed new exterior colors, black-painted tow hooks, and a fixed rear window with defrost and privacy glass standard on Lariat. It also listed changed Lariat seat material and steering wheel, revised engine availability, and a new Platinum Plus package. These are changes associated with 2025, not the definition of the 2023 redesign. Some are trim-specific or equipment-related, so their presence or absence cannot by itself prove a truck’s generation.
These details are useful if the question is specifically whether a Super Duty matches the 2025 specification. For that check, confirm the model year first, then compare the relevant feature with Ford’s 2025 information and the truck’s trim. For example, Ford identified the fixed rear window with defrost and privacy glass as standard on Lariat; that is not a claim that every 2025 trim has the same rear-window specification. Those announcements concern later-year choices. Use the 2027 model-year information if you are checking one of those packages or configurations; do not use them as a test for whether a Super Duty belongs to the 2023 redesigned generation.

Availability can depend on configuration. Ford specifically described Platinum trim availability on certain chassis cabs, so do not assume the same package or trim choices apply to every body style. The 2027 changes are useful as a reminder to make a year-specific comparison, not as evidence that every later Super Duty received one identical body or equipment update.

If you are looking at a truck in person or comparing two Super Duties, work through these checks in order:
- Write down the model year. Use the vehicle paperwork or a Ford/dealer record, not appearance alone. Keep the build, sale, or registration date separate from the model-year question.
- Write down the trim and configuration. Include the cab, bed, engine, and package details when known. These determine which Ford features and choices are relevant.
- State the question precisely. Decide whether you mean the 2023 redesigned generation, a 2025 change, or a 2027 package or availability item. This prevents a later-year feature from being mistaken for the start of the generation.
- Choose the right year’s Ford material. Use 2023 information to check the redesigned generation, 2025 information for that year’s changes, or 2027 information for announced packages and availability.
- Compare several details. Check the exterior styling and cabin against the correct year and trim, then review listed equipment. Treat grille, lighting, vents, and display details as supporting clues.

For a two-truck comparison, use the same sequence for each vehicle. First establish both model years and trims. If the trucks differ in cab, bed, engine, or package, keep those distinctions visible in your notes. Appearance is useful for narrowing down what to verify. A truck that matches the 2023 styling cues may be consistent with the redesigned generation, while a listed 2025 feature may point to a later-year specification. But visual cues alone do not reliably settle the question when trims, packages, or configurations differ. A missing feature does not automatically rule out the 2023 redesign, and a familiar-looking feature does not prove a model year.
Do not treat capability figures as design identifiers, either. Ford’s 2024 announcement gave maximum available horsepower, torque, payload, and towing figures for specified configurations, but those numbers concern capability and depend on equipment and configuration. They do not show whether a truck has the 2023 design. If capability is part of your buying comparison, check the configuration and applicable Ford specifications separately from the design-generation check.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Equating “latest” with “redesigned.” The 2023 model year is the key marker for the all-new generation. 2025 and 2027 announcements cover later updates and choices.
