Depending on the make, model year, market, trim and software, you may adjust regenerative braking in a screen menu, with steering-wheel paddles, through a drive mode, or with more than one control. Park safely, find the manual for your exact vehicle, and use the brake pedal whenever you need prompt deceleration or a stop. Treat the examples below as model-specific illustrations, not universal instructions.
Regenerative braking and one-pedal driving are related, but not identical
Regenerative braking uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle and can return some energy to the battery. Chevrolet describes its One-Pedal Driving feature as using the motor both to slow the vehicle and charge the battery. The amount of deceleration, available settings and behavior at a stop depend on the vehicle and conditions. Chevrolet’s explanation of One-Pedal Driving and Regen On Demand describes its system.

One-pedal driving changes what happens when you lift your foot from the accelerator. In a suitable setting, the SUV may slow substantially and may come to a stop without you pressing the brake. That is not a guarantee: some vehicles or conditions may prevent the system from slowing or stopping the SUV as expected. The brake pedal remains necessary whenever you need more deceleration or an immediate stop.

In practice, an SUV may let you adjust how strongly it slows when you release the accelerator, choose a mode that changes that response, or engage a one-pedal feature separately. Do not assume that a control called “regen,” “deceleration,” or “i-Pedal” works the same way across manufacturers.

It helps to think of the accelerator as controlling two things in a one-pedal mode: acceleration when you press it and, depending on the system, some amount of deceleration when you ease off. That does not mean the accelerator becomes a brake pedal. The vehicle’s response is defined by its particular system, and the driver still needs to use the brake pedal when lift-off deceleration is insufficient, when a prompt stop is needed, or when the vehicle does not stop where intended.
Regenerative braking settings are not necessarily a simple choice between “on” and “off.” Some vehicles offer a choice of braking strength; some pair a one-pedal feature with a separate adjustment; and some use controls that differ from a display menu. The labels and resulting behavior are not standardized across brands. Read the explanation in your own manual rather than inferring what a setting will do from its name.
Find the correct control for your electric SUV
- Park safely before exploring. Do not search through unfamiliar menus while driving.
- Identify the exact vehicle. Note its make, model, model year and market; trim and software can also affect the controls and behavior.
- Open the matching owner’s manual. Search its index or contents for “regenerative braking,” “deceleration,” “one-pedal driving,” “i-Pedal,” or the name of the feature shown in the vehicle.
- Confirm how adjustment works. The manual should establish whether your SUV uses a display menu, steering-wheel paddles, a drive-mode control, or a combination, and whether adjustment is allowed while moving.
- Make a modest change and learn the response. If the manual permits adjustment while driving, do so only when road and traffic conditions leave your attention on driving. If you are unfamiliar with the setting, start with a less aggressive response and practice in a safe, familiar place.
- Keep ready to brake. Use the brake pedal if the SUV is not slowing enough, if you need to stop, or if the situation changes unexpectedly.
Controls can differ even between vehicles from the same maker. A manual for another model, year, trim or market is not a reliable substitute for the one matching your SUV.
Before changing anything, use the manual to distinguish between a setting for regenerative-braking strength and a setting that enables a particular driving feature. Also check whether the control is available in the current drive mode and whether the manual permits changing it while underway. If the procedure involves paddles, find out which paddle or action does what before setting off; if it involves a display, learn the menu path while parked.
After choosing a setting, allow yourself time to get used to the lift-off response in a familiar, low-pressure environment. Ease off the accelerator deliberately and notice how the vehicle slows, rather than assuming it will behave like another EV you have driven. Keep appropriate space from other road users and use the brake pedal to complete a stop or adjust speed when needed. This is not a test of how far you can travel without braking; it is practice in understanding the vehicle’s response while remaining ready to use the brakes.

| Vehicle example | Documented control or behavior | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet One-Pedal Driving | Chevrolet describes the screen path as Vehicle Controls > Drive and Park for turning One-Pedal Driving on or off and customizing its braking level. With the feature engaged, accelerator position controls acceleration and deceleration. | Availability and behavior are vehicle-specific. Check the support information and owner’s manual for your model. Chevrolet: One-Pedal Driving and Regen On Demand |
| Tesla Model Y | The cited Model Y manual gives the path Controls > Dynamics > Deceleration Mode and describes Reduced and Standard modes. | Confirm the current instructions for the Model Y’s year and software. For snow or ice, the cited manual recommends Low regen. Tesla Model Y Owner’s Manual: Braking and Stopping |
| Hyundai, cited 2025 US manual | The manual describes changing regenerative braking with steering-wheel paddles and engaging one-pedal operation by holding the left paddle while coasting. | The manual also lists conditions in which paddle adjustment is unavailable and cautions that the vehicle may not stop even with one-pedal driving active, depending on vehicle and road conditions. Verify the manual matches your SUV. Hyundai 2025 US manual: regenerative-braking limitations and Hyundai 2025 US manual: One Pedal Driving |
| Kia EV9, cited owner-manual page | The manual describes engaging one-pedal driving by pulling and holding the left paddle while coasting. | It lists situations in which one-pedal driving is unavailable, including steep grades, Snow mode, high battery charge and trailer use. Confirm the instructions apply to your market and model year. Kia EV9 owner manual: One pedal driving |
The examples demonstrate four different types of interface and feature behavior, not four interchangeable sets of instructions. Chevrolet’s support page describes both switching its feature on or off and customizing braking level. The Tesla Model Y manual names a Deceleration Mode menu with two choices. The cited Hyundai and Kia manuals describe paddle-based controls, including holding the left paddle while coasting to engage one-pedal operation. Do not try one manufacturer’s sequence in a different vehicle.
The Hyundai reference is specifically the 2025 US manual. The Kia page is an EV9 owner-manual page for a particular market; its applicability should be checked for your own market and model year. Tesla’s instructions are for Model Y, and Chevrolet’s availability and behavior vary by vehicle. These limits matter: even a correct description of one model does not confirm that the same control exists in another trim, software version, or regional specification.
For an exact procedure, locate the appropriate manual for your vehicle and follow its terminology and sequence. If the screen or control names have changed, use the manual and the vehicle’s current display rather than treating an example menu path as definitive. Manufacturer documentation is the authority for whether the feature is available, how it is adjusted, and under what conditions it may be restricted.
Choose a setting by the way you want the SUV to respond
When comparing the options in your SUV’s manual, focus on the effects that matter in daily driving rather than assuming that a particular label means the same thing everywhere.
- Lift-off deceleration: How strongly does the SUV slow when you release the accelerator? A stronger response may suit drivers who want to modulate speed with the accelerator, but it can feel unfamiliar at first.
- Behavior near a stop: Can the setting bring the SUV to a complete stop, or does it only slow it? If it can stop, check the manual for how the vehicle behaves once stationary.
- How you change it: A screen menu, paddles and a drive-mode control are different interfaces. Learn the correct control before setting off, and verify whether the manufacturer permits changes on the move.
- Conditions that affect availability or response: Check the manual for limits involving battery charge, temperature, road grade, drive mode, snow or ice, and trailer use. These vary by vehicle.
These comparison points help you assess a real difference without ranking one system as universally better. A driver who wants more deceleration when easing off the accelerator may prefer a stronger response, while a less aggressive setting may feel more familiar to someone new to one-pedal driving. The important question is what the chosen mode does in your SUV and whether you are comfortable anticipating that response.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Stopping behavior deserves particular attention. A system that slows the SUV substantially may still not bring it to a full stop in every situation. Even if a feature can stop the vehicle under some conditions, the cited manufacturer material does not support treating that behavior as guaranteed across vehicles or circumstances. Read the manual for how your SUV behaves at low speed and once stationary, and be prepared to apply the brake pedal rather than relying on the mode to stop or hold the vehicle.

Convenience is another practical comparison. A display menu may require navigating a screen, while paddles provide a different way to make an adjustment; the sources document both approaches but do not establish that one is easier for every driver. Learn the interface before driving and avoid looking away from the road to make an unfamiliar change. If you cannot confirm whether a control can be changed while moving, wait until safely parked.
Do not assume that your preferred setting carries over between trips or remains active after changing drive modes; the cited material does not establish a general persistence rule. Check the manual or vehicle display for your SUV’s behavior.
Use the brake pedal when one-pedal deceleration is not enough
One-pedal driving is a driving mode, not a replacement for the brake pedal. Chevrolet explicitly directs drivers to use the brake pedal in an emergency or whenever needed to slow or stop. Do not rely on regenerative deceleration alone to avoid a collision, stop at a precise point, or hold the vehicle on a grade. Chevrolet’s One-Pedal Driving guidance explains these limits.

If you are still learning the setting, practice accelerator release and stopping in a safe, familiar location rather than testing it in traffic.
The key safety distinction is between using lift-off deceleration to manage ordinary speed and relying on it to guarantee a stop. The feature can change how the vehicle slows, but it does not remove the driver’s responsibility to brake when needed. For a sudden hazard, an unexpectedly weak response, or a stop at a specific point, use the brake pedal. Keep your attention on the driving task and do not wait to find out whether the vehicle’s regenerative response will be enough.
Likewise, do not treat one-pedal driving as a parking or hill-holding feature. The Chevrolet guidance warns against relying on it to hold the vehicle on a grade. Follow your owner’s manual for how to secure the SUV when stopped or parked and for any grade-related limits on regenerative braking.

Adjust for weather, grade and battery conditions using your manual
Regenerative braking and one-pedal behavior can be limited or unavailable in particular conditions. Manufacturer documentation identifies examples such as a high battery charge, cold weather, steep grades, selected drive modes and trailer use, but the applicable list depends on the vehicle. A setting that feels familiar in ordinary conditions may not produce the same deceleration in every situation.
Chevrolet says One-Pedal Driving behavior may be limited in cold weather, on a steep hill, or with a full battery, and recommends switching the feature off on slippery roads. Kia’s cited EV9 manual lists steep grades, Snow mode, high battery charge and trailer use among situations where one-pedal driving is unavailable. Hyundai’s cited 2025 US manual also describes circumstances in which paddle adjustment is unavailable. These examples are not a combined checklist for every electric SUV: consult the exact manual for the limits that apply to your vehicle.
There is no sound cross-model rule to always maximize regeneration or always switch it off in winter. The cited advice differs: the Tesla Model Y manual recommends Low regen in snow or ice, while Chevrolet recommends turning One-Pedal Driving off on slippery roads. Follow the instruction for your exact vehicle and market, and drive to the road conditions.
When a warning, display message or change in response indicates that regeneration is limited, do not assume you can restore the usual behavior by repeatedly changing modes. The sources establish that conditions can affect availability and response, but the specific indication and remedy are vehicle-dependent. Check the owner’s manual and use the brake pedal as needed. If the manual does not explain what you are seeing, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Also check the manual before using one-pedal features with a trailer or on a significant grade. The Kia EV9 example specifically names trailer use and steep grades among availability limits, while Chevrolet notes that steep hills may limit behavior. Do not generalize those exact restrictions to every make, but do not ignore a restriction in your own manual.

- You cannot find the menu: Check the manual for your exact model year and market, and search for alternative terms such as “deceleration,” “regen,” or “one-pedal driving.” The control may be a paddle or drive-mode setting rather than a screen option.
- A paddle does not change the setting: Consult the limitations section of the manual. Hyundai’s cited 2025 US manual documents circumstances when paddle adjustment is unavailable; do not assume the same list applies to another SUV.
- The SUV does not come to a stop: Do not treat this as proof that the mode is malfunctioning. One-pedal driving may not stop the vehicle in some vehicle or road conditions. Use the brake pedal to stop and consult the manual for the documented limitations.
- Deceleration feels different from usual: Check whether the selected mode or conditions affect regenerative braking. The cited manuals identify limits related to charge, temperature, grades and drive modes, among other vehicle-specific factors.
- You are driving on a slippery road or steep grade: Use the model-specific guidance rather than experimenting with settings. The recommendations and restrictions are not identical across manufacturers.
When troubleshooting, first confirm which setting is selected and whether the manual says it should be available under the current conditions. Check the vehicle’s display for its own instructions or alerts, but do not try to diagnose a safety-critical issue by repeatedly toggling settings while driving. If the response is not adequate for the situation, brake. If the manual does not explain a missing control or unexpected behavior, contact the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than relying on instructions for a different model.

Do not assume that an unavailable paddle or a weaker-than-expected response has the same cause in every SUV. Battery charge, temperature, grade, drive mode and other model-specific conditions may affect regenerative braking, and the documented restrictions differ. The manual for the exact vehicle is the place to check which conditions apply and whether there is a prescribed action.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I adjust regenerative braking or one-pedal driving in my electric SUV?
There is no universal procedure. Find the owner’s manual for your exact make, model year and market, then look for regenerative braking, deceleration, one-pedal driving or i-Pedal. The control may be in a display menu, on steering-wheel paddles, or tied to a drive mode. Park safely while learning the controls, and adjust only while moving if the manual permits it and conditions allow.
Does one-pedal driving mean I do not need to use the brake pedal?
No. It changes how the SUV responds when you lift off the accelerator and may slow the vehicle substantially or bring it to a stop, but it is not a guaranteed stop in every vehicle or condition. Use the brake pedal whenever you need more deceleration, an immediate stop, or a stop at a precise point.
Why might my EV SUV’s regenerative braking feel weaker or be unavailable?
The applicable limits vary by vehicle. Manufacturer manuals identify examples including high battery charge, cold weather, steep grades, selected drive modes and trailer use. Check your vehicle’s manual for its specific restrictions and use the brake pedal if the SUV is not slowing enough.
Should I turn regenerative braking off in snow or ice?
Follow your vehicle’s own instructions rather than a general rule. The cited Tesla Model Y manual recommends Low regen in snow or ice, while Chevrolet recommends turning One-Pedal Driving off on slippery roads. These are model-specific examples, not a universal winter setting.
Why won’t my electric SUV stop completely in one-pedal mode?
One-pedal driving may not bring the vehicle to a stop under some vehicle or road conditions. That alone does not establish a malfunction. Apply the brake pedal to stop and check the manual for the feature’s limitations; contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the manual does not explain the behavior.
Will my preferred regenerative-braking setting stay selected between trips?
There is no general persistence rule that applies to every electric SUV. Check your owner’s manual or vehicle display to find out whether your model retains the setting or requires you to select it again.
The Bottom Line
Use your exact SUV’s owner’s manual to find and understand its regen or one-pedal control: menus, paddles and operating limits vary by model. Learn the response in a safe place, follow model-specific advice for weather, grades and other conditions, and use the brake pedal whenever you need to slow or stop.
