There is no single engine or trim that suits every UK buyer. A well-documented, correctly specified car is a safer choice than a higher trim with missing records or neglected maintenance.
Use the registration and VIN to identify the car, then check the UK brochure for that year. Engine names, gearboxes and standard equipment changed between generations, model years and markets. Treat manufacturer specifications as a description of what was offered, not proof of what a particular used car has.

Start with the Clio generation and model year
Generation is the first filter because an engine or trim name can mean different equipment in different years. Renault says UK sales of the fifth-generation Clio began in autumn 2019. Earlier cars belong to different specification eras, even when an advert uses a familiar badge.
Renault’s global media page dated 8 September 2025 describes six Clio generations since 1990, sales in 120 countries and nearly 17 million cars sold. Those are Renault’s worldwide promotional figures, not a measure of the reliability or value of any UK used example.

How to identify the exact car
- Read the registration document and confirm the first-registration date.
- Match the VIN and registration to the seller’s advert, service invoices and MOT record.
- Record the engine designation, fuel type, gearbox and trim as shown on the car’s paperwork.
- Use a Renault UK brochure from the same model year and market to check standard and optional equipment.
Do not transfer a fifth-generation specification to a 2017 or 2018 car, or assume that a trim badge has the same equipment throughout the generation.
What the available Clio engines tell you
The sources establish specifications for particular launch articles and brochures, not a complete UK engine list for every year. The table separates confirmed figures from buyer decisions that still require checking on the car.

Choose by journey, not by the badge
For short urban trips, consider fuel type, cold-start behaviour, low-speed drivability and whether an automatic would reduce workload. For frequent motorway travel, consider the engine’s output, noise at cruising speed, gearing and the condition of the particular car. For mixed driving, annual mileage and fuel availability may matter more than a small difference in quoted power.
These are decision criteria, not universal rankings. The available evidence does not establish one Clio engine as the best choice for every route, mileage or budget. Compare two actual cars of the same generation, including their service records and asking prices, rather than comparing engine names in isolation.

When an automatic matters
Decide whether you require an automatic before narrowing the engine list. Renault’s 2019 launch material mentions a five-speed manual and an automatic X-TRONIC option for launch versions, but availability varied by year and trim. Test the actual gearbox from cold and at normal road speeds; do not assume that an advertised automatic uses the same transmission as another generation.
How to assess the gearbox
Manual gearbox
During a cold start and road test, select every gear, including reverse. Look for baulking, crunching, clutch slip, a high bite point, vibration or noises that change when the clutch pedal is pressed. Ask whether clutch or gearbox work is documented. A smooth shift on a short drive is useful evidence, but it does not replace maintenance records.
X-TRONIC or other continuously variable automatic
Check that the car engages drive and reverse promptly, moves away without a warning message and responds consistently in traffic and on an incline. Listen for unusual whining and check for leaks. Confirm the transmission type from the VIN or brochure because an automatic badge alone does not identify the unit.
Clio IV EDC reports
CarAdvertCheck’s guide reports judder and control-module complaints for some Clio IV EDC automatics. These are owner-report prompts, not failure rates. On an EDC car, pay particular attention to shudder when pulling away, hesitation during low-speed shifts, warning lights and evidence of diagnostic or module work. Have a specialist inspect symptoms before committing to a purchase.

Trim: verify equipment instead of trusting the badge
Trim names changed across years and markets. Renault’s 2019 UK launch release highlighted LED headlights across the range, a large portrait multimedia screen and sportier styling for the new R.S. Line. Those launch-era statements do not prove that every earlier or later Clio has the same equipment.

A trim badge is not adequate proof. An option pack, a previous owner’s retrofit or a market-specific specification can make two cars with the same badge materially different.
A practical shortlist method
- Set non-negotiables. Write down automatic or manual, fuel type, maximum mileage, body condition and equipment you will genuinely use.
- Limit the generation. Decide whether you are comparing pre-2019 cars, fifth-generation cars from autumn 2019 onward, or a specific year range.
- Collect matching specifications. Download or obtain the UK brochure for each shortlisted year and record the engine, gearbox and standard equipment.
- Compare complete cars. Put asking price, mileage, owners, service invoices, MOT advisories, tyres and upcoming maintenance beside the specification.
- Reject unverified claims. Treat “full history”, “top spec” and “recently serviced” as claims requiring invoices or inspection.
- Arrange a cold viewing. Ask the seller not to warm the engine before you arrive, where practical.
- Check recalls and diagnostics. Ask a Renault dealer to confirm open or completed recall work for the VIN.
- Use an independent inspection. This is particularly valuable when records are missing, the gearbox shows symptoms or the car has warning lights.
Used-Clio inspection checklist
Documents and maintenance
- Match the registration, VIN, engine, gearbox and trim to the car being sold.
- Request dated invoices, not just a stamped service book.
- Check both mileage-based and time-based maintenance against the exact engine’s Renault schedule.
- For a Clio IV 1.2 16v, ask specifically for evidence of timing-belt replacement where the schedule requires it.
- For diesel cars, verify belt maintenance against the engine-specific schedule rather than relying on a generic interval.
MOT history
Read the official MOT history and investigate repeated advisories, especially those concerning tyres, brakes, suspension, steering or corrosion. A single repaired advisory is different from the same issue appearing year after year. Ask the seller to explain recurring items and produce invoices where work is claimed.

- Start the engine from cold if possible and watch for warning lights that remain illuminated.
- Listen for abnormal rattle or grinding from a TCe petrol engine.
- Look for smoke, fluid leaks, irregular idle and evidence of low oil level.
- Ask about oil top-ups and any history of chain, tensioner or engine work.
Road test
- Drive at low speed, through a normal urban route and at higher road speed where legal.
- Test clutch take-up or automatic engagement, every gear, steering assistance and braking.
- Check for pulling, vibration, judder, suspension knocks and warning messages.
- Use the infotainment, parking aids, climate controls, lights and every advertised convenience feature.
Recall confirmation
What Car?’s used review, updated 12 March 2026, reports a power-steering problem affecting a small number of cars made during a stated 2019 production period. Renault dealers handled steering-column replacement without charge under recall. This does not mean every 2019 Clio is affected. Give the dealer the individual VIN and obtain confirmation that any applicable campaign is complete.

Reported engine issues: how to use them responsibly
CarAdvertCheck’s guide covers Clio II, III, IV and the model launched in 2019. It reports chain-tensioner concerns on some 0.9 TCe examples, oil-consumption and chain-stretch reports for the 1.2 TCe, and the EDC symptoms described above. The guide also notes sparse reports for some engines and for the newer generation.
These reports are useful because they sharpen your questions, but they are not population-level failure rates and do not prove that every example is defective. A quiet cold start, clean history and a professional inspection are more informative than an engine label alone.
Infotainment and software checks
What Car? advises checking that the infotainment system has received software updates. Test the screen repeatedly, not just once: start the car, pair a phone, use navigation if fitted, adjust volume, reverse and switch between menus. Record any freezing, failed connections, dead pixels or rebooting and price the repair before buying.
Running costs and the limits of published comparisons
The available sources do not provide a consistent, directly comparable current UK dataset for real-world fuel economy, insurance, servicing or repair costs across every Clio engine and trim. Do not declare a universal running-cost winner from a quoted economy figure or a small owner-reported sample.

Instead, calculate the likely cost for each actual car using its fuel type, annual mileage, insurance quote, road tax where applicable, service needs, tyres and any overdue belt or clutch work. A cheaper purchase price can disappear quickly if a missing service item must be completed immediately.
Three buyer profiles, three ways to decide
Mostly urban driver who wants an automatic
Prioritise a documented automatic with smooth cold engagement, no judder and a verified recall and service record. Confirm that the gearbox offered in the target year is the one you want; do not infer this from a later brochure.
Mixed-use driver comparing TCe petrol cars
Compare the TCe 90 and TCe 100 only after confirming the model year and specification. The launch figures show 90 hp and 140 Nm for the earlier TCe 90 and 100 hp and 160 Nm for the TCe 100, but the condition, maintenance and equipment of the actual cars should decide between otherwise similar examples.

Verify that the car is the full-hybrid E-Tech 145 listed in Renault UK’s October 2026 brochure, rather than assuming every newer-looking Clio is a hybrid. Check the original specification, hybrid-system records and the equipment fitted to that trim.
When to walk away
- The seller will not provide the VIN or allow a cold start.
- The registration, engine or gearbox differs between the advert and the paperwork.
- Warning lights remain on, the steering feels abnormal or the gearbox judders.
- Repeated MOT advisories have no repair evidence.
- Important maintenance is claimed but unsupported by invoices.
- Infotainment or safety equipment advertised as standard is missing or inoperative.
- A recall cannot be confirmed and the seller refuses a dealer check.
Final buying decision
Choose the Clio that best matches your journeys only after narrowing the generation and year. Then verify the engine and gearbox from the matching UK brochure, inspect the equipment rather than trusting the trim badge, and compare records and condition car by car. Reported faults should guide a cold-start inspection, MOT review, diagnostic check and recall confirmation—not replace them.
