How to Choose the Right Compact Pickup for Your Commute, Cargo, and Towing in 2026

The Maverick favors fuel economy, bed utility, and payload; the Santa Cruz offers a more comfortable crossover cabin and higher turbo-model towing. Use exact payload and tow labels to choose safely.

For most shoppers choosing between the two main unibody compact pickups, the decision is straightforward: choose the Ford Maverick if low commuting fuel use, a conventional pickup layout, bed space, and payload matter most; choose the Hyundai Santa Cruz if a quieter crossover-like cabin, richer equipment, and the highest available tow rating matter more. The Maverick hybrid is the efficiency leader in the comparison data, while the turbo Santa Cruz has the larger maximum tow rating.

Your correct choice depends on the truck’s exact engine, drivetrain, tow equipment, payload sticker, and the loaded weight of what you plan to carry or tow. A model name alone does not establish a safe payload or towing limit.

Start with the job, not the badge

Compact pickups are no longer a single type of vehicle. The Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz use unibody construction and share a car-based approach that suits commuting, errands, light hauling, and occasional recreational towing. The Toyota Tacoma is a larger body-on-frame truck aimed at greater off-road and heavy-duty capability. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration distinguishes these small unibody pickups from that larger truck class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because a compact pickup can be easier to park and more comfortable in daily traffic than a traditional truck, but it is not automatically a substitute for a full-size or body-on-frame model. Before comparing trims, write down three numbers:

#1 Best Overall
Rough Country Slide-Out Truck Bed Cargo Tray - Organizer for 5'7"+ Beds, Heavy-Duty Polyethylene, UV-Protected, Easy Tailgate Access
  • Maximize Bed Storage: Optimize your truck bed's space with ample storage for tools, gear, golf clubs, and weekend adventure accessories while keeping your cargo area organized and secure.
  • Built to Last: Made from durable, high-density polyethylene, our weather resistant truck storage trays are designed to withstand the toughest conditions and UV protected to prevent fading.
  • Keeps Cargo Secure & Easy to Reach: Adjustable tie-down straps and built-in anchor points hold gear in place, while the slide-out tray makes loading and unloading easy.
  • At only 4" tall, this tray easiily fits under any bed cover and its 62" length is perfect for longer sized cargo like ladders, tools and golf bags.
  • Longer Truck Bed Fit: Measures 62.29"x23.6"x4" H and fits popular trucks equipped with a 5'7" or longer bed. Backed by Rough Country's 3-year warranty.
  • Your normal one-way commute and the share of that driving done in town.
  • The heaviest load you expect to place in the bed, including passengers and other items in the truck.
  • The loaded trailer weight you may tow, not the trailer’s empty brochure weight.

If your real use falls comfortably inside the Maverick’s limits, its efficiency and bed utility are compelling. If you regularly approach the upper end of compact-pickup towing or want a more polished cabin, the Santa Cruz deserves closer attention.

Maverick and Santa Cruz at a glance

Decision factor Ford Maverick Hyundai Santa Cruz
Vehicle character More conventional, work-truck-like pickup feel More crossover-like ride, cabin, and equipment
Best documented commute result About 38 mpg combined for the hybrid, according to the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison Up to 25 mpg combined for the non-hybrid configuration compared in the 2025 Edmunds/AP report
Bed cargo volume 33.3 cubic feet, Ford Motor Company specification for 2026 Useable organization includes documented T-slot utility tracks; a directly comparable volume figure was not stated
Bed length 4 feet 5 inches Configuration-specific; compare the actual bed and tailgate dimensions
Maximum payload Up to 1,500 pounds in specified configurations, Ford Motor Company 2026 specification 1,411 pounds for the tested configuration in the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison
Standard or base towing figure 2,000 pounds standard Configuration-dependent; confirm the vehicle’s equipment and rating
Maximum documented towing 4,000 pounds with the available 4K Tow Package Up to 5,000 pounds with the turbo engine, according to the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison
Useful equipment note The 4K Tow Package includes a trailer brake controller Hyundai documents Tow Mode and configuration-dependent towing equipment

These are not trim-independent promises. Ford’s payload and towing figures apply to specified configurations, and the Santa Cruz figures vary with engine and equipment. Confirm the door-jamb label, payload sticker, hitch rating, and owner documentation on the exact truck you are buying.

Choose for your commute

When the Maverick hybrid makes the most sense

The 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison reports about 38 mpg combined for the Maverick hybrid. That figure is a comparison result for the hybrid configuration, not a guarantee for every Maverick, and actual fuel use changes with weather, speed, traffic, tires, payload, and driving style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you drive mostly in town, cover a long weekly distance, and rarely tow, the hybrid can reduce the fuel penalty traditionally associated with owning a pickup. It also keeps the basic pickup layout: an open bed, a separate tailgate, and a driving position that feels more truck-like than the Santa Cruz. The trade-off is that the Maverick’s cabin and ride can feel less polished than the Hyundai’s.

When the Santa Cruz is worth the efficiency trade-off

The same comparison describes the Santa Cruz as more comfortable and crossover-like, with a quieter, more finished cabin and available driver-assistance features. Its compared non-hybrid configuration reached up to 25 mpg combined. For a driver who spends hours on the highway, carries family members often, or places a high value on interior presentation and ride comfort, those advantages may outweigh the lower fuel-economy figure.

Do not choose based on a single advertised mpg number. Drive both vehicles on the roads you actually use. Pay attention to seat support, steering effort, visibility at intersections, road noise, parking-camera clarity, and how easily you can enter and exit. A truck that is theoretically efficient but unpleasant for your commute can be a poor real-world choice.

A simple commute calculation

  1. Estimate your annual miles from your weekly commute, errands, and trips.
  2. Separate city-heavy use from mostly highway use.
  3. Use the EPA label on the exact engine and drivetrain rather than a different trim’s number.
  4. Compare the expected fuel expense with the value you place on the Santa Cruz’s comfort and equipment.

This calculation should guide the decision, not replace a test drive. The published comparison provides a useful directional difference—about 38 mpg combined for the Maverick hybrid versus up to 25 mpg combined for the compared Santa Cruz configuration—but it does not predict your personal fuel bill.

Match the bed to the cargo you actually carry

Maverick bed capacity and layout

Ford lists 33.3 cubic feet of bed cargo volume and a 4-foot-5-inch bed for the 2026 Maverick. Those figures make the Maverick a practical choice for home-improvement supplies, camping equipment, bicycles, yard materials, and other loads that are awkward to place inside an SUV.

Volume is only part of the answer. Measure the longest item you carry, check whether the wheel wells intrude into its usable width, and decide whether you need the tailgate open or closed. A bed can have impressive published volume yet be inconvenient for a specific sheet, tool case, cooler, or motorcycle. Check tie-down locations and the compatibility of a bed mat, cover, rack, or divider with the exact bed configuration before ordering accessories.

Santa Cruz bed organization

The Santa Cruz documents T-slot utility tracks that support tie-down and cargo-management accessories. Those tracks can be valuable when you carry changing loads and want a more organized way to secure them. Compare the actual bed floor, wheel-well width, tailgate length, and accessory system rather than treating bed volume as the only measure of usefulness.

Take the items you carry most often to a dealer if practical. A tape measure can answer questions that a specification sheet cannot: whether a cooler fits between the wheel wells, whether a folded stroller clears the tailgate, or whether a toolbox leaves room for tie-down access.

Understand payload before you load the bed

Payload is the truck’s total allowable weight of occupants, fuel, cargo, and trailer tongue weight. It is not simply the amount of material you can place between the bed rails.

Ford lists up to 1,500 pounds of maximum payload for specified Maverick configurations. The 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison reported 1,500 pounds for the tested Maverick versus 1,411 pounds for the tested Santa Cruz configuration. Because these are configuration-specific figures, use the payload sticker on the individual truck rather than applying the highest number to every trim.

Payload calculation example

Start with the payload number printed on the truck’s certification label. Subtract the weight of every person who will ride in the vehicle, fuel and permanently carried tools or accessories, and the trailer tongue weight if you are towing. The remainder is the weight available for bed cargo and anything else added to the vehicle.

For example, a truck with a 1,500-pound label does not still have 1,500 pounds available after four adults, luggage, a bed cover, and a trailer are added. The calculation must be made for the actual trip, because a load that is acceptable with one occupant may exceed the limit with a full cabin and trailer.

Payload checks at the dealer

  • Read the yellow-and-white payload label on the specific vehicle.
  • Confirm whether dealer-installed accessories add weight.
  • Ask for the front and rear axle ratings if your load is dense or unevenly distributed.
  • Check that the planned cargo can be tied down without obstructing lights or the tailgate latch.
  • Recalculate when passengers, tools, or trailer equipment change.

Choose towing capacity by loaded trailer weight

Use the trailer’s loaded, ready-to-travel weight rather than its empty brochure or dry weight. Water, propane, batteries, food, clothing, cookware, tools, and recreational equipment can add substantial mass before the trailer is attached.

Ford Maverick towing choices

Ford lists 2,000 pounds as the Maverick’s standard tow rating. The available 4K Tow Package raises the listed rating to 4,000 pounds in eligible configurations and includes a trailer brake controller. That controller is an important part of the package for a buyer whose trailer requires electrically operated brakes; it is not merely an engine-output upgrade.

When shopping, ask the salesperson to identify the 4K Tow Package on the build sheet and verify that the truck has the required hitch and wiring. Search terms such as Ford Maverick trailer brake controller may identify compatible physical products, but compatibility must be confirmed for the model year, drivetrain, and factory wiring. Do not assume an aftermarket controller or hitch creates the factory-rated capacity.

Santa Cruz towing choices

The 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison reports up to 5,000 pounds of towing for the turbo-engine Santa Cruz. Hyundai documents Tow Mode and configuration-dependent towing equipment. The 5,000-pound figure therefore applies to the appropriate turbo configuration, not automatically to every Santa Cruz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for the exact engine, drivetrain, hitch, cooling equipment, wiring, and brake requirements. Confirm the trailer’s loaded weight and the truck’s remaining payload after passengers and tongue weight are included. A higher maximum tow number is useful only when the complete vehicle-and-trailer combination satisfies every limit.

Before you sign a towing order

  1. Write down the trailer’s expected loaded weight from its manufacturer data and your own cargo list.
  2. Check the truck’s maximum rating for the exact engine and drivetrain.
  3. Confirm the hitch receiver and ball mount are rated for the load.
  4. Verify trailer-brake requirements and whether a controller is factory-installed.
  5. Check the payload label after accounting for passengers, cargo, accessories, and tongue weight.
  6. Confirm that the trailer lights, safety chains, and breakaway system can connect to the truck.
  7. Take a test tow only after the dealer verifies the equipment and rating.

Do you need the Maverick 4K Tow Package?

You need to evaluate the package against your trailer, not against a generic idea of towing. The standard Maverick rating is 2,000 pounds; the available package raises the listed rating to 4,000 pounds and adds a trailer brake controller. If your loaded trailer is comfortably below 2,000 pounds and does not require the package’s equipment, the standard setup may meet your use. If the trailer approaches or exceeds that threshold, the 4K package provides the stated capacity in eligible configurations.

The package does not increase the truck’s payload. Tongue weight still counts against payload, and passengers, fuel, tools, and accessories still consume the available allowance. A trailer within the 4,000-pound tow rating can still create an overload if the truck is filled with people and cargo.

Compare the exact configurations, not just model names

Item to verify Why it changes the decision Where to confirm it
Engine Determines fuel economy and, for the Santa Cruz, whether the highest towing figure is available Window sticker and build sheet
Drivetrain Can change rating, traction, and efficiency Vehicle identification and owner documentation
Payload Limits people, bed cargo, accessories, and tongue weight together Vehicle-specific payload label
Tow package May change rating and add required equipment Factory options list and build sheet
Trailer-brake controller Provides the control equipment required by some braked trailers Cab controls, wiring, and package documentation
Hitch rating Sets a limit independent of the engine’s headline tow number Hitch label and manufacturer documentation
Bed dimensions Determine whether your real cargo fits and can be secured Physical measurement of the truck
Accessory compatibility Bed mats, covers, racks, and tie-down systems may be model- and year-specific Accessory manufacturer fitment and dealer confirmation

Test-drive plan for a commuter who also hauls

Evaluate the cabin first

Drive each truck through stop-and-go traffic, a rough side street, and a sustained highway stretch. Note seat comfort after at least 20 minutes, steering response, mirror coverage, blind spots, cabin noise, climate-control access, and the ease of pairing your phone. The Santa Cruz’s crossover-like character may suit a family commute; the Maverick’s more basic work-truck feel may be preferable if you prioritize straightforward controls and pickup utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then test the practical details

  • Open the tailgate and measure the usable floor length and width.
  • Inspect tie-down points and the T-slot system where fitted.
  • Check whether the rear seats and cabin storage accommodate your regular gear.
  • Locate the trailer-brake controller and verify how Tow Mode is selected where applicable.
  • Look at the payload label before negotiating, not after delivery.

Use your own numbers

Bring a written cargo list and trailer specification. Ask the dealer to place the exact truck on the worksheet with its engine, drivetrain, tow package, payload rating, and installed accessories. If any answer is described only as “up to,” request the rating for that vehicle identification number or build configuration.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying the highest advertised tow rating

A maximum figure generally belongs to a particular engine and equipment combination. Avoid applying the Santa Cruz turbo figure to a different engine or the Maverick 4,000-pound figure to a truck without the 4K package.

Confusing payload with bed capacity

The bed can physically hold an item that the truck cannot legally carry within its payload limit. Count people, fuel, cargo, accessories, and tongue weight together.

Using dry trailer weight

Dry weight omits the belongings and fluids you add for a trip. Use the loaded weight you expect at the scale or the manufacturer’s loaded rating, whichever is appropriate for the trailer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a brake controller is universal

The Maverick 4K Tow Package includes a trailer brake controller. A truck without that package may need different equipment, and the correct solution depends on the trailer and vehicle wiring. Verify the system before towing a braked trailer.

Ignoring bed shape

Published cubic feet do not tell you whether your longest or widest item fits. Measure the bed, wheel-well spacing, and tailgate opening, and confirm the tie-down strategy.

Which compact pickup fits each buyer?

Your priority Better starting point Reason
Lowest commuting fuel use and mostly urban driving Maverick hybrid About 38 mpg combined was reported for the hybrid in the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison
Conventional pickup feel and a 33.3-cubic-foot bed Maverick Ford lists the stated bed volume and 4-foot-5-inch bed
Maximum compact-pickup towing Turbo Santa Cruz Up to 5,000 pounds was reported for the turbo configuration in the 2025 Edmunds/AP comparison
Comfort-focused daily driving Santa Cruz The comparison characterizes it as more crossover-like and comfortable
Frequent loads near the upper payload range Compare the exact truck labels Reported figures are configuration-specific: up to 1,500 pounds for specified Mavericks and 1,411 pounds for the tested Santa Cruz
Trailer braking equipment included from the factory Maverick with 4K Tow Package Ford lists a trailer brake controller as part of that package

Final purchase checklist

  1. Choose the primary use: commute, cargo, towing, or an intentional balance.
  2. Record annual miles and compare the exact hybrid, turbo, and drivetrain configurations under consideration.
  3. Measure your regular cargo and compare the physical bed, tailgate, and tie-down layout.
  4. Read the payload label on each truck.
  5. Calculate loaded trailer weight and tongue weight.
  6. Verify tow rating, hitch rating, trailer brakes, wiring, and controller.
  7. Check that accessories fit the specific model year and bed configuration.
  8. Test-drive both trucks on your real commuting routes before deciding.

The Maverick is the stronger all-round answer when efficiency, payload, and straightforward bed utility lead your priorities. The Santa Cruz is the better fit when comfort, crossover manners, and the turbo model’s higher tow ceiling justify its lower reported fuel economy. In either case, the exact label and equipment list—not the badge or the best-case advertisement—determines what your truck can safely carry and tow.
