There is no universal jet size for a modified small engine. The correct choice depends first on the exact carburetor family and application, then on which metering circuit controls the throttle range where the problem occurs. Identify the carburetor, verify its factory or recommended baseline, make sure it is clean and undamaged, and change only a compatible jet while testing under controlled conditions.
A jet number cannot be transferred reliably between unrelated carburetors. Even when two jets carry similar stamped numbers, their physical dimensions, calibration and flow conventions may differ.

Why modified engines do not have one correct jet size
A carburetor jet meters fuel through a specific passage. Its number or code describes that part within a particular carburetor family; it is not a universal flow rating shared by every manufacturer. A modified engine may need different calibration after an intake, exhaust or other hardware change, but the modification does not identify the replacement jet by itself.
The starting point is the carburetor’s make, series, model and application chart. Mikuni’s catalog, for example, lists separate main-jet families, part numbers and fitments. Its large-hex 4/042 main jet is listed for VM and TM carburetors, while other carburetors use different jet families. That example is conditional: a 4/042 is not a generic “small-engine jet” and should not be installed unless the carburetor is the specified VM/TM type.

Walbro gives the same application-first warning in different terms: engine manufacturers fine-tune carburetors, so the engine service manual or manufacturer should supply the specific setting. If the engine or carburetor model is unknown, the responsible answer is to identify it before buying parts rather than guess from displacement, horsepower or a number copied from another machine.
Record the variables before touching a jet
Write down the information that determines fitment and test conditions. This prevents a jet change from being confused with a fuel, service or operating-condition problem.
- Engine make, exact model and, where available, specification or code.
- Carburetor make, series, model and any casting or body markings.
- Every installed jet marking, including main, pilot and needle-jet identifiers.
- Intake, air-filter, exhaust and fuel-system modifications.
- Fuel type and any fuel-system change made at the same time.
- Operating altitude and the conditions under which the symptom appears.
- The throttle opening at which the symptom occurs, not just the engine speed.
- Temperature, load and warm-up state during each comparison run.
Take clear photographs of the carburetor and the stamped parts before disassembly. Keep the original parts labeled so you can return to the known baseline.

Use the manufacturer’s parts information
Find the carburetor’s service manual, parts catalog or application chart. Confirm the exact jet type, thread or hex form, length, orifice style and size range listed for that carburetor. A jet that screws in can still be the wrong part if its metering geometry or calibration family differs.
Example: Mikuni VM/TM main jets
| Jet information | What is established | What remains application-specific |
|---|---|---|
| 4/042 large-hex main jet | Listed by Mikuni for VM/TM carburetors | The correct stamped size, needle system and engine application are not stated without the exact model and specification |
| Other Mikuni main-jet families | Mikuni lists separate families for different carburetors | Family names, dimensions and fitments must be checked against the particular carburetor |
| Jet from an unrelated carburetor | No reliable interchangeability can be assumed | Do not compare the numbers as though they share one scale |
This is why a generic assortment is a poor first purchase. Buy an exact replacement or a size range explicitly listed for your carburetor family.

Match the symptom to the metering circuit
Jet selection starts with the throttle range that produces the symptom. Throttle opening is the useful reference in the cited Mikuni RS guidance; engine RPM alone can be misleading because load and gearing change the airflow at a given speed.
| Throttle range in Mikuni RS guidance | Primary circuit | How to use this information |
|---|---|---|
| Closed to approximately one-eighth throttle | Pilot system | Investigate pilot calibration and pilot passages first when the fault is confined to this opening |
| Approximately one-eighth to three-quarter throttle | Needle and needle jet | Investigate the needle system when the engine responds poorly through the middle opening range |
| Approximately three-quarter to full throttle | Main jet | Investigate the main jet when the issue appears under high throttle and load |
These ranges overlap and belong to the RS carburetor design. They are not universal boundaries for every small-engine carburetor. On another design, consult that manufacturer’s manual before assigning a symptom to a circuit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the symptom spans every throttle position
A problem from idle through full throttle is not automatically a main-jet problem. Check fuel supply, tank venting, filter condition, float or diaphragm operation, air leaks, ignition, linkage and basic engine condition. A blocked passage or damaged component can mimic incorrect calibration.
Verify the baseline and service condition
Compare with the application specification
Before changing anything, compare the installed parts with the carburetor maker’s specification for the exact engine and application. Mikuni’s RS instructions direct the user to the specification chart before altering jets. A modified engine may legitimately need a different setting, but the original specification gives you a documented reference and reveals whether a previous owner already made an undocumented change.
Clean before recalibrating
Briggs & Stratton identifies dirt, varnish and gasoline deposits as common causes of blockage and describes cleaning the main fuel jet. Remove and inspect the relevant passage using the manufacturer’s procedure. Look for a blocked orifice, damaged threads, distorted sealing surfaces, a stuck float or diaphragm, and contamination in the bowl or fuel inlet.

Cleaning is maintenance, not a substitute for calibration. If the engine returns to normal after a blockage is removed, installing a different jet would only create a new error. Conversely, a clean carburetor can still require a different setting after a genuine hardware change.
A controlled jet-selection procedure
- Identify the hardware. Record the engine and carburetor models, part markings and all modifications. Do not proceed on a displacement-only description.
- Find the documented baseline. Use the carburetor or engine service manual and application chart to identify the specified jet family and starting size.
- Inspect and service the carburetor. Correct contamination, damaged parts, fuel-delivery faults and air leaks before interpreting a calibration test.
- Map the symptom to throttle opening. Hold the engine at the opening where the fault occurs and determine whether it is near closed throttle, in the middle range or near full throttle. Use the circuit ranges only as guidance for the identified carburetor family.
- Select a compatible candidate. Choose a jet from the correct physical family and the size range listed for that carburetor. Do not substitute a similarly numbered part from another family.
- Change one variable. Install one jet or make one metering adjustment at a time. Record the part number, size, date and operating conditions.
- Warm the engine as directed. Follow the manufacturer’s warm-up and operating instructions so that cold-enrichment behavior is not mistaken for the final calibration.
- Test at a repeatable load and throttle opening. Use the same fuel, engine temperature, load and route or test equipment for each comparison. Avoid drawing conclusions from a single transient blip.
- Evaluate the result. Record starting, acceleration, steady running, high-load response and any overheating or fuel-delivery symptom. Keep the baseline jet available for comparison.
- Make the next change only after the result is clear. If the test is inconclusive, restore the baseline and correct the test condition or service fault rather than stacking multiple changes.
- Secure the final configuration. Recheck fasteners, seals, throttle operation and fuel leaks, then document the final jet and conditions for future service.
How to decide whether a size change helped
Do not assume that a larger jet is automatically safer or that a smaller jet automatically makes more power. The useful comparison is the engine’s repeatable response in the circuit being tested, under the same conditions, with a compatible part.
For the main circuit, Mikuni’s HSR42-48 tuning manual describes dyno testing as a quick and safe way to select a main jet. It says to choose the jet that delivers the most power; when two jets produce the same power, it recommends the smaller one. The statement applies to the HSR carburetor family and its test method, not to every small-engine carburetor. It also warns that an overheated engine can lead to an incorrect selection.
If you do not have controlled instrumentation, use the manufacturer’s service procedure and a qualified operator rather than treating a subjective road impression as proof. A change that improves one throttle range while creating a fault in another is not a successful final setting.
Testing safely
Prefer controlled equipment
A dynamometer or other controlled test setup keeps speed, load and throttle repeatable and allows the operator to stop when temperature or fuel-system behavior becomes unsafe. The operator should be competent with the specific engine and carburetor.

Do not turn public-road testing into a tuning plan
The Mikuni HSR manual discusses full-throttle road methods but explicitly warns that they can be dangerous. Do not reproduce those procedures as casual street advice. Use a closed, lawful test area or professional equipment appropriate to the machine, with protective equipment and an emergency shutoff.
Stop when the engine is overheating or the fuel system is unsafe
An overheated engine can invalidate a jet comparison and may cause damage. Stop for fuel leaks, unstable fuel delivery, loss of throttle control, abnormal noises, smoke or rapidly rising temperature. Correct the mechanical problem before continuing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Altitude and emissions requirements
High altitude is manufacturer-specific
Briggs & Stratton’s installation guidance calls for a high-altitude compensating jet on its gasoline engines operated above 3,000 feet and directs the owner to an authorized dealer for the proper part. That threshold and procedure apply to the specified Briggs & Stratton engines; they are not a universal rule for every manufacturer or carburetor.
For another engine, use its own altitude chart or service manual. Record the elevation at which the engine will actually operate, because a setting selected at one altitude may not represent the manufacturer’s recommendation elsewhere.
Keep regulated engines compliant
Briggs & Stratton warns against tampering with engines designed to meet EPA standards, including disabling emissions controls, and notes that installing a different part on a regulated engine may carry tampering penalties. Routine service, rebuilding and approved high-altitude jet replacement can be permitted, but the exact rules depend on the engine, jurisdiction and use.

Troubleshooting branches
| Observed pattern | First investigation | Why a jet swap may be premature |
|---|---|---|
| Fault only near closed throttle | Pilot system, idle passages, enrichment operation and air leaks | The Mikuni RS assigns this range primarily to the pilot system, not the main jet |
| Fault through the middle opening | Needle, needle jet and their installation | The RS guidance assigns approximately one-eighth to three-quarter throttle mainly to the needle system |
| Fault only at high throttle and load | Main-jet family, baseline size, fuel delivery and operating temperature | The main jet governs the cited RS range, but blocked passages and overheating can imitate a wrong size |
| Fault at all openings | Fuel supply, venting, filter, float or diaphragm, ignition, linkage and engine condition | A single main-jet change cannot correct a system-wide mechanical fault |
| Different result on different days | Repeat fuel, temperature, altitude, load and warm-up conditions | Changing more than one variable makes the comparison impossible to interpret |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by engine displacement alone: displacement does not identify the carburetor’s jet family or application setting.
- Copying a number from another machine: numbers are not portable across unrelated designs.
- Ignoring the pilot and needle circuits: a main jet cannot fix a fault that occurs only at low or mid throttle.
- Jetting around a blockage: clean and inspect the carburetor before altering calibration.
- Changing several parts at once: you lose the ability to identify which change produced the result.
- Testing a cold or overheated engine: either condition can produce misleading behavior; use the manufacturer’s operating procedure.
- Using an unsafe road test: high-throttle testing requires a controlled environment and a qualified operator.
- Drilling or enlarging a jet without a documented method: use identifiable, compatible replacement parts so the calibration can be repeated or reversed.
- Discarding the original parts: retain the baseline as a reference and emergency fallback.
What to buy after the diagnosis
Once fitment and circuit are established, the appropriate purchase may be an exact replacement main jet, another size within the carburetor maker’s listed range, a pilot or needle-system part, or a model-specific service component. If inspection found contamination, buy the correct service parts and use the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure.
A generic jet assortment is not a sound substitute for identifying the carburetor family. Compare candidate parts by series, physical type, stamped size and application-chart baseline, then compare their observed response under identical test conditions. Never rank different manufacturers’ size numbers as if they shared one scale.
Worked decision examples
Example 1: A VM/TM carburetor with a high-throttle change
Suppose the carburetor is positively identified as a Mikuni VM or TM and the problem appears only from approximately three-quarter to full throttle. The documented path is to verify the VM/TM main-jet family, check the application baseline, inspect the main passage and fuel delivery, then test a compatible main-jet size under repeatable load. A 4/042 large-hex part may be physically relevant because Mikuni lists that family for VM/TM, but the correct stamped size still requires the exact application chart and test result.
Example 2: A low-throttle stumble after storage
If the engine sat with fuel and now stumbles near closed throttle, inspect the pilot passage and contamination before touching the main jet. Briggs & Stratton’s cleaning guidance supports treating deposits and varnish as a service fault. Only after the carburetor is clean and the baseline is verified should pilot calibration be considered.
Example 3: A Briggs & Stratton engine used above 3,000 feet
For a Briggs & Stratton gasoline engine operated above 3,000 feet, follow that manufacturer’s high-altitude guidance and obtain the specified compensating jet through an authorized dealer. Do not transfer the 3,000-foot threshold to another engine brand, and do not disable emissions equipment to solve a drivability complaint.
When to stop and obtain specialist help
Have a qualified technician identify the carburetor and test the engine when the model markings are missing, the engine is regulated, the test requires sustained full load, fuel delivery is unstable, or temperature rises unexpectedly. Professional help is also appropriate when several circuits appear wrong at once, because the underlying problem may be an air leak, ignition fault, valve issue or fuel-system restriction rather than jet size.

The most defensible final setting is the one tied to a documented carburetor application, a serviceable fuel system, a repeatable test and a legal operating configuration. Without those four elements, a jet number is only a guess.
