The right BMW M4 depends on four decisions: which generation, which engine specification, which drivetrain and gearbox, and whether the individual car has the condition and records to justify its price. The first-generation F82 coupe and F83 convertible use BMW’s S55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. The second-generation G82 coupe and G83 convertible use the newer S58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. Neither is automatically the better buy for every driver.
For a new-car reference, BMW’s 2025 US coupe range shows how strongly trim changes the experience: the base M4 makes 473 hp with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive; the 503-hp Competition uses an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive; and the 523-hp Competition xDrive combines the automatic gearbox with all-wheel drive. Those figures apply to that US model-year lineup, not to every M4 sold worldwide.

Start with the generation: F82/F83 or G82/G83
BMW introduced the M4 name for the coupe and convertible branch when the related four-door sedan continued as the M3. In the United States, the first M4 arrived for 2015-model sales after its 2014 introduction. BMW’s second-generation M4 followed from 2020.

Understand what the S55 and S58 engines actually mean
F82/F83: S55 turbocharged inline-six
The S55 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six developed for the first M4 generation. BMW’s US launch material for the 2015 car quotes 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. BMW M’s historical overview presents a 431-to-500-hp range across F82/F83 variants in its own market and measurement context. Those numbers span different countries, trims and special models, so the 500-hp ceiling is not the output of every F82.
Choose an S55 car when the appeal is the original M4 format, a lower-generation entry point, or a specific gearbox and body combination that is no longer offered in the same way. The engine’s headline number matters less than the exact build: identify whether the car is manual or dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive, a convertible or coupe, and which factory performance version it represents.
G82/G83: S58 turbocharged inline-six
The S58 is the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six used by the second-generation M4. BMW’s US 2025 coupe specifications illustrate its broad spread of outputs: 473 hp in the base car, 503 hp in the rear-drive Competition and 523 hp in the Competition xDrive. Earlier G82/G83 model years and non-US markets can differ, so use the specification sheet for the VIN and build date under consideration.
The S58 choice is therefore inseparable from trim and drivetrain. A G82 base car is not simply a less powerful version of a Competition xDrive; it also changes the gearbox and driven wheels. Compare the complete configuration instead of comparing engine family names in isolation.
Read horsepower figures in context
The F82’s published numbers are not contradictory simply because one BMW document says 425 hp and another historical page says 431 hp. The US launch release and BMW M history page refer to different market and measurement contexts. BMW M’s 431-to-500-hp range also spans variants and special models. Use the number on the local specification sheet for the exact car, rather than combining figures from different countries or treating the highest number as typical.
The same caution applies to G82 and G83 cars. The 473-, 503- and 523-hp figures are specifically BMW’s 2025 US coupe lineup. They are useful for comparing those three trims, but they are not a universal output chart for every second-generation M4. Record the country of delivery, model year, production date and trim before comparing advertisements.
BMW M president Dr. Friedrich Nitschke summarized the engineering emphasis this way: “The engine is the heart of every M model.” For a buyer, that means the engine family is an important starting point, not the complete specification.

Use the 2025 US coupe lineup as a decision map
BMW’s 2025 US coupe range provides a clear example of how the same generation can serve different drivers.
| 2025 US coupe configuration | Power | Transmission | Driven wheels | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base M4 | 473 hp | Six-speed manual | Rear-wheel drive | Drivers who place involvement and control above maximum output |
| M4 Competition | 503 hp | Eight-speed M Steptronic automatic | Rear-wheel drive | Drivers wanting more power with rear-drive behavior and two-pedal convenience |
| M4 Competition xDrive | 523 hp | Eight-speed M Steptronic automatic | All-wheel drive | Drivers prioritizing traction and the highest listed 2025 US coupe output |
These are model-year- and market-specific specifications. Confirm the local ordering guide, window sticker or VIN build sheet before assuming a used car has one of these combinations.
Choose the gearbox and drivetrain before chasing horsepower
When a manual makes sense
The cited 2025 US base coupe is the manual option. It suits a driver who wants to manage each shift and accept the corresponding power and rear-drive configuration. Availability changes by market and model year, and used inventory is limited to cars that were actually ordered that way. Search by transmission first if a manual is essential.
When rear-wheel drive is the priority
Rear-wheel drive keeps the car’s behavior centered on throttle control and balance. The 2025 US range pairs it with both the 473-hp manual base car and the 503-hp automatic Competition. Decide whether you want the involvement of the manual or the faster, easier repeatability of the automatic before comparing examples.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen xDrive is the priority
The 523-hp Competition xDrive is the all-wheel-drive configuration in the cited 2025 US lineup. It is automatic-only in that range. Choose it when launching traction, wet-weather confidence or the highest listed output matters more than having a manual gearbox. Verify that the specific market and model year offer the same drivetrain, because the lineup is not universal.
Coupe versus convertible: make the body decision separately
The F82 and G82 are coupes; F83 and G83 are convertibles. Body style affects the ownership brief independently of engine family. A convertible may be the reason to choose a particular generation, but it should not be assumed to share every coupe specification, equipment package or production date.
- Confirm the body code in the VIN decoding and factory build sheet.
- Compare the exact engine output, gearbox and drivetrain for that body, not only the coupe brochure.
- Inspect roof operation, seals and warning messages on a convertible during the pre-purchase inspection.
- For either body, record the build date because equipment and running changes can occur within a named model year.
How to choose a used F82/F83
With an older M4, the individual car is more important than the badge on the trunk. BMW’s launch material describes track-oriented cooling and oil-supply design, but that engineering description does not prove that a particular used car was maintained correctly or driven gently.

1. Verify the production identity
- Obtain the VIN and decode it through BMW documentation or a reputable VIN service.
- Record the production month and year, body code, engine family, transmission and drivetrain.
- Match the seller’s claimed trim and power figure to the factory build sheet and the original window sticker when available.
2. Build a complete service history
Ask for invoices, scheduled-maintenance records and evidence of repairs rather than accepting a verbal “mechanically perfect” description. A specialist inspection should check for leaks, cooling-system condition, underbody damage, warning lights, tire wear, brake condition and signs of previous collision or track use. The inspection does not replace a VIN-based recall and campaign check.
3. Treat production-date claims as verification leads
Secondary buyer guides sometimes associate particular F82 production periods with revisions, recalls or complaint totals. Those claims should be checked against the vehicle’s VIN, BMW service records and original recall data before they influence a purchase. Do not reject or favor every car built in a broad date range without verifying the actual campaign and repair status.
4. Ask directly about use
- Was the car used for driver education, timed laps or competitive events?
- Which fluids, brakes and tires were fitted, and at what intervals?
- Were modifications installed, and are the original parts included?
- Are there cold-start, overheating, drivetrain or clutch symptoms that appear only after the car is warm?
A documented, unmodified example with consistent maintenance can be a better purchase than a lower-mileage car with gaps in its history. The available evidence does not establish a universal F82 reliability ranking or a dependable ownership-cost average.
How to choose a used or new G82/G83
Match the trim to your actual driving
Start with the 2025 US configurations as a checklist, then verify the year and country. If you require three pedals, the base manual is the relevant starting point. If you want rear-drive power with an automatic, the 503-hp Competition is the appropriate configuration in that lineup. If traction and maximum listed output are the priorities, inspect Competition xDrive examples.
Check equipment by VIN, not by photographs
Options, packages and software can vary by market and model year. Request the build sheet and confirm the transmission, driven wheels, seats, brakes, driver-assistance equipment and wheel-and-tire specification. A photograph of the dashboard or a generic online listing cannot establish the full factory configuration.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchInspect condition even on a newer car
Confirm tire matching and tread depth, brake wear, wheel damage, underbody contact, paint-meter consistency and all dashboard warnings. For a performance car, look for evidence of repeated hard launches, track use or curb strikes. Remaining factory warranty, if any, should be checked by VIN and date rather than assumed from the registration year.
Budget for verification and ownership risk
No independently verified average maintenance, repair or ownership-cost figure establishes one generation as cheaper. Costs depend on mileage, condition, market, specification, tires, brakes, fluids, previous modifications and whether the car has been used on track. Treat a specialist pre-purchase inspection and a service-history review as optional but sensible expenses when evaluating a used example; they can reveal issues that an attractive asking price does not show.

Before making an offer, leave room in the budget for the inspection, immediate maintenance and any unresolved diagnostic work. A car with missing invoices, warning lights or uncertain modifications should be priced as an unresolved mechanical risk until a BMW M specialist identifies the cause. Do not use a generic maintenance package, scanner or consumable recommendation without confirming compatibility with the exact VIN and engine, transmission and brake specification.
What the 2026 M Ignite update changes
BMW M announced “M Ignite,” a pre-chamber ignition system for S58 engines on 7 May 2026. BMW says series production begins in July 2026 for M3 and M4 variants in countries subject to EU7 emissions regulations, while displacement and power outputs remain unchanged.
This is a geographically limited production update, not a universal change to every 2026 M4. If you are shopping a 2026 car, verify the production specification and local availability from the VIN or build sheet. Do not infer that an EU7-market car has the same engine hardware as a car delivered elsewhere.
A practical buying process
- Define the non-negotiables. Write down body style, manual versus automatic, rear-wheel drive versus xDrive, minimum power and budget before looking at listings.
- Choose the generation that offers those features. Use F82/F83 for the S55-era car and G82/G83 for the S58-era car, then narrow by body code.
- Check market and model year. Record the country of delivery and production date; do not transfer US figures to another market without confirmation.
- Verify the factory configuration. Match VIN, build sheet, engine, trim, transmission, drivetrain and equipment.
- Separate specification from condition. Compare service records, accident history, modifications, track use and inspection results before deciding between two cars.
- Price the risk, not just the purchase. A car with missing records or unresolved warning lights needs a specialist diagnosis before you commit, even if its advertised horsepower and options look attractive.
- Get an independent inspection. Use a BMW M specialist who can inspect the engine, cooling and lubrication systems, driveline, suspension, brakes, electronics and body structure.
- Recheck recalls and campaigns. Confirm completion by VIN with BMW records or the relevant national recall authority.
Common decision mistakes
- Comparing headline horsepower across markets: BMW’s 425-hp US launch figure, 431-hp historical reference and 2025 US figures describe different specifications and measurement contexts.
- Assuming every F82 is a 500-hp car: BMW M’s 431-to-500-hp range covers variants; it is not a single output for all first-generation M4s.
- Calling every G82 an xDrive: The 2025 US range includes a manual rear-drive base car and a rear-drive Competition alongside Competition xDrive.
- Using model year as a substitute for build date: Running changes and campaigns are tied to specific production and VIN information.
- Treating manufacturer track engineering as a maintenance guarantee: Cooling and oil-supply design help explain the car’s intended use, but only records and inspection reveal how a used example was treated.
- Assuming M Ignite is fitted everywhere in 2026: BMW limits the announced production application to EU7-regulated countries.
- Buying from a photo or badge alone: Online images rarely confirm the body code, transmission, driven wheels, options, accident repairs or warning-light history.
Which BMW M4 should you buy?
Choose an F82/F83 when the first-generation character, S55 engine, a particular manual or dual-clutch configuration, or the available used-car budget is the priority—and only after validating the individual car’s build date and records. Choose a G82/G83 when you want the newer S58 platform and the ability to select among the 2025-style manual rear-drive base car, rear-drive Competition or all-wheel-drive Competition xDrive, subject to the market and year.
The final choice should be made at the configuration level: body code, engine, output, gearbox, driven wheels, equipment, production date and condition. BMW’s published specifications establish what each version was built to deliver; they do not establish one objectively best generation, reliability winner or ownership cost for every buyer.

Which BMW M4 has a manual transmission?
Availability depends on market and model year. In BMW’s 2025 US coupe lineup, the 473-hp base M4 is the six-speed manual, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Confirm a used car’s transmission from its VIN build sheet.
Is every G82 M4 an xDrive?

Should I choose the F82 or G82 for reliability?
There is no independently verified statistic here that ranks one generation universally or supplies a dependable average ownership cost. Judge the individual car by production date, VIN-based campaign history, service records, modifications and an independent inspection.
What is BMW M Ignite on a 2026 M4?
M Ignite is a pre-chamber ignition system BMW M says enters S58 series production in July 2026 for M3 and M4 variants in countries subject to EU7 regulations. BMW says displacement and power outputs remain unchanged. It is not automatically fitted to every 2026 car worldwide.
What should a used M4 inspection cover?
Have a BMW M specialist verify the VIN and build sheet, inspect cooling and lubrication systems, driveline, suspension, brakes, tires, electronics and body structure, and look for leaks, warning lights, underbody damage, collision repairs, track use and modifications. Separately confirm recalls and campaigns by VIN.
The Bottom Line
There is no single best M4 generation. Pick the F82/F83 for the S55-era character and the exact manual, dual-clutch or body combination you want; pick the G82/G83 for the newer S58 platform and its trim-specific manual, rear-drive Competition and xDrive choices. In either case, verify the VIN, market, build date, factory equipment, service history and condition before paying for horsepower on a listing.
