How to Choose Between the Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black (Not a 350)

The announced smaller Bonneville models are the 400cc T40 and T40 Black, not a confirmed 350. This guide compares their finishes, shared technology, fit, accessories, timing and what remains unknown.

There is no confirmed Triumph Bonneville 350 variant in the current official information. Triumph’s 2026 announcement and Bonneville lineup identify the smaller models as the Bonneville T40 and Bonneville T40 Black, both using a 400cc TR Series engine. The practical choice is therefore between two T40 finishes, not between 350cc versions.

The published material describes the pair as sharing their engine tune, chassis, rider technology and ergonomics. Choose the T40 for chrome and brushed-metal detailing, or the T40 Black for its darker painted, powder-coated and blacked-out treatment. Triumph has not published a variant-specific power or handling advantage, and prices are not due until early 2027.

Triumph’s Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent says the aim was “not simply to create a smaller Bonneville,” but a motorcycle offering the style, character and ownership experience expected from a genuine Bonneville. That positioning explains why the decision is primarily about finish, fit and ownership priorities rather than a documented mechanical upgrade.

What happened to the “Bonneville 350” name?

As of Triumph’s 2026 product announcement, the company has not established a Bonneville with a 350cc engine. The announced small Bonneville models are named T40 and T40 Black. Both use a dedicated tune of Triumph’s liquid-cooled 400cc TR Series single-cylinder engine.

  • Great Design: These bolts have a knurled head for easy hand tightening without tools. The long, threaded body keeps the seat secure while allowing quick removal.
  • Note: Please verify your vehicle model before buying to ensure a great fit. You can use a hex wrench if you need to tighten it or remove it more easily (if necessary).

That distinction matters when searching dealer sites, registration databases or social media. A listing described as a “Bonneville 350” may be an error, an unconfirmed claim or confusion with another motorcycle. Treat the T40 designation and Triumph’s own model information as the reference point until the company publishes different specifications.

The T40 name also does not indicate a 40cc engine. It is the model designation for this new, smaller Bonneville family. Triumph’s announcement gives the capacity as 400cc, so a buyer should not use “350” when checking insurance quotes, licensing requirements or parts compatibility.

Capacity can affect learner or restricted-licence rules, registration categories and insurance rating, so verify the figure on the vehicle identification and market-specific specification sheet. Do not assume a search result, imported listing or social-media post has the correct engine capacity.

The finish descriptions are manufacturer specifications. They do not constitute an independent comparison of durability, corrosion resistance or cleaning effort. A black finish may look different under sunlight, showroom lights and road grime, but Triumph has not published a maintenance or longevity comparison.

What both T40 models are confirmed to include

400cc TR Series engine

Triumph describes a new iteration of its 400cc TR Series engine with a dedicated tune for the T40 range. The announcement does not provide a published horsepower, torque figure, top speed, fuel-consumption result or acceleration time for either finish. Do not infer a performance difference from the paint or metal treatments.

Rider modes and electronic aids

Both variants are announced with five riding modes, cruise control, lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control. These are company-published equipment claims; no independent test data establishes how the modes differ in real-world conditions or how intervention feels on the road.

Ask the dealer to identify how the modes are selected, whether cruise control is available in every gear or market configuration, and whether the rider aids can be adjusted. Those operating details are not specified in the announcement and should not be guessed from photographs or from another Triumph model.

Display and smartphone functions

A 4-inch circular TFT is listed for the pair. Triumph says it supports smartphone navigation plus phone and music control. Before purchase, ask the dealer which phone operating systems, applications and mounting or headset hardware are required in your market. The announcement does not specify compatibility lists or subscription requirements.

Chassis and riding position

Triumph presents the T40 models with a classic Bonneville silhouette, relaxed ergonomics and lightweight aluminium rims. The company describes these characteristics jointly, so the reviewed information does not support a claim that the Black version rides, steers or brakes differently.

How the finishes differ in everyday ownership

Choose the T40 for traditional brightwork

The standard T40 uses chrome-finished mirrors and grab hoop, brushed aluminium heel guards and a brushed steel exhaust. This combination emphasizes the bright metal contrast associated with a classic Bonneville. It is the more natural choice if you want the motorcycle’s hardware to remain visually prominent rather than blend into the bodywork.

Choose the T40 Black for a monochrome custom look

The T40 Black replaces that bright presentation with a darker visual treatment. Triumph lists Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black paint, gloss-black aluminium wheel rims with bright spokes, powder-coated engine casings, and a blacked-out header and peashooter silencer. The result is still recognizably Bonneville-shaped, but the engine and exhaust recede into the overall color scheme.

Those are appearance and finish distinctions. Triumph has not stated that the powder coating changes engine output, cooling, braking, suspension settings or weight. If two motorcycles are priced differently when local figures arrive, verify whether the difference is solely finish or includes additional equipment.

Consider the environment in which you will keep the bike. Chrome and brushed metal can require attentive cleaning to preserve their appearance, while dark painted or powder-coated parts can show dust, water marks or scratches in a different way. That is a practical inspection point, not a claim that one finish is objectively easier to maintain.

Is the T40 Black mechanically different?

No mechanical advantage is established in the published announcement. Triumph describes the engine family, electronics, chassis concept, ergonomics and wheel construction together for T40 and T40 Black. There is no official variant-specific claim for extra power, revised gearing, different suspension calibration, larger brakes or a changed riding position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent road tests, instrumented acceleration figures, measured fuel economy, long-term reliability reports and comparative comfort assessments were not included in the available material. A buyer who values those differences should wait for credible tests or arrange back-to-back dealer rides rather than treating the Black finish as a performance package.

Fit, seat height and rider comfort

The announced low-seat option

Triumph says a Genuine Triumph accessory low seat can reduce seat height to 770mm. That is the minimum figure for the accessory-seat configuration described by the company, not a guarantee of the height of every standard or market-specific motorcycle.

What to check at a dealership

  1. Ask whether the demonstration bike has the standard seat or the accessory low seat fitted.
  2. Sit with both feet on the pegs and check whether your knees remain comfortable at the stated relaxed riding position.
  3. Turn the bars fully left and right to confirm that your wrists, knees and tank clearance feel natural.
  4. Reach the clutch, brake, mode and cruise-control controls while wearing the gloves and riding jacket you normally use.
  5. Check foot placement at a stop and while paddling the motorcycle backward; inseam length alone does not predict confidence.
  6. If possible, request a short ride on the exact seat and wheel specification you intend to buy.

Triumph also announces a comfort seat. Exact dimensions, padding changes and local prices are not stated, so treat it as an option to evaluate in person rather than assuming it will lower or raise the seat.

Ask whether the low and comfort seats can be exchanged without changing mounting hardware, and request the fitted seat height in writing. If you regularly carry a passenger, assess pillion space and grab-point access with the intended seat, because a solo showroom check may not reveal how the motorcycle works two-up.

When will the T40 be available and what will it cost?

Triumph says prices for the T40 and T40 Black will be announced in early 2027. The first motorcycles are planned to reach dealerships from spring 2027. Neither a final price nor market-by-market availability is confirmed in the announcement reviewed here, and spring timing should not be assumed to be identical in every country.

Do not rely on estimated internet prices, deposits or claims that orders are open in a particular country until an authorized dealer confirms a local listing. When pricing is published, compare the complete on-road figure: motorcycle price, registration or destination charges, taxes, required safety equipment, insurance, servicing and any accessories you select.

Also ask whether the quoted price includes preparation, freight, documentation, first registration or mandatory local equipment. A low advertised figure may exclude several of these items. Obtain an itemized quote for each finish so a difference in total cost is not mistaken for a difference in specification.

Context from the larger Bonneville range

Triumph’s official lineup also lists the T100, T120, T120 Black, Speedmaster and Bobber. A dated 2026 UK release gave starting prices of £9,695 for the T100 and £12,195 for the T120 and T120 Black, with dealership arrival from February 2026. Those figures apply to that UK release and those larger models; they are not T40 prices and cannot be generalized to another market or a later year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same release describes the T100 as an accessible first large-capacity option and attributes this statement to Triumph Chief Commercial Officer Paul Stroud: “It’s often the first big bike for many, with a third of customers stepping up to their first large-capacity motorcycle.” That is a company-reported customer statistic, not an independently audited market survey, so use it as positioning rather than proof of suitability.

Accessories announced for launch

Triumph says Genuine Triumph low and comfort seats and classic panniers are planned from launch. The announcement does not establish exact local availability, prices, colors, load ratings or fitting times.

Low or comfort seat

Choose the low seat when reach to the ground is your primary concern, then verify knee angle and control reach. Choose the comfort seat only after sitting on it or confirming its dimensions with a dealer; “comfort” does not specify how its shape will suit your height or riding distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Classic panniers

Panniers can change the motorcycle’s width, loading balance and passenger access. Ask the dealer for the approved mounting hardware, maximum load, waterproofing instructions and whether the panniers remain compatible with the seat or luggage configuration you choose. Do not assume that an announced accessory is already in stock.

Before ordering luggage, measure the space where you park and check whether the added width affects gates, covers or lane filtering in your area. Confirm whether panniers are sold as a pair, whether locks are keyed to the motorcycle and whether installation affects the warranty or service schedule. None of those details is established yet, so obtain them from the local dealer.

A practical method for choosing your variant

  1. Correct the model search. Search for Bonneville T40 and Bonneville T40 Black rather than Bonneville 350, and confirm that any dealer listing identifies the 400cc TR Series engine.
  2. Set your arrival and budget window. Because pricing is scheduled for early 2027 and deliveries from spring 2027, decide whether you can wait and reserve money for taxes, insurance, protection gear and accessories.
  3. Decide whether bright or dark finishes suit your use. Select chrome, brushed aluminium and brushed steel on the T40, or the darker painted, powder-coated and blacked-out parts on the T40 Black.
  4. Confirm fit with the intended seat. Test the standard seat and, if needed, the announced low seat. Record reach to the ground, bars and controls rather than judging from photographs.
  5. Verify the exact equipment sheet. Ask the dealer to confirm the 4-inch TFT, smartphone functions, five riding modes, cruise control and cornering ABS and traction control for the market-specific motorcycle.
  6. Price the finished motorcycle. Add the selected seat, panniers, registration, delivery, insurance and protective equipment. Compare total on-road costs only after Triumph publishes local T40 figures.
  7. Arrange a ride before committing. Since no independent comparison establishes a ride difference, use a demonstration ride to evaluate vibration, reach, braking feel, mode behavior and comfort for yourself.

Questions the published information cannot answer yet

  • Power and torque: no official output figures are stated for the T40 or T40 Black in the available announcement.
  • Fuel economy and range: no independently measured or manufacturer-certified real-world result is provided.
  • Service schedule: the 10,000-mile (16,000km) interval quoted in Triumph’s 2026 T100/T120 release applies to those larger models, not automatically to the T40.
  • Insurance and registration: costs depend on rider, location, licensing rules and insurer; no complete regional regulatory picture is established.
  • Long-term durability: finish resistance, reliability and corrosion performance require ownership evidence or formal warranty and maintenance information.
  • Regional specification: equipment, colors, taxes and delivery dates may vary by market and must be confirmed locally.

Keeping these gaps visible prevents a finish choice from being mistaken for a tested mechanical comparison.

Buying checklist for a dealer visit

  • Confirm the motorcycle is a Bonneville T40 or T40 Black and record the stated engine capacity as 400cc.
  • Ask for the market-specific specification sheet and warranty terms.
  • Check which paint color and wheel finish are actually available in your market.
  • Inspect chrome, brushed metal, powder-coated and blacked-out parts under showroom lighting for the finish you prefer.
  • Test the standard seat and ask when the 770mm low-seat accessory can be supplied.
  • Ask whether the comfort seat and classic panniers are available at the same time as the motorcycle.
  • Confirm smartphone navigation, phone and music control requirements before purchasing a headset or phone mount.
  • Request a written, itemized on-road quotation once local pricing is announced.
  • Take a test ride if permitted, because published material does not establish a real-world difference between the variants.

Which Bonneville T40 should you choose?

Choose the Bonneville T40 when you want chrome mirrors and grab hoop, brushed aluminium heel guards and a brushed steel exhaust that highlight the traditional Bonneville look. Choose the Bonneville T40 Black when Matt Pewter Grey or Matt Phantom Black paint, gloss-black rims, powder-coated casings and blacked-out exhaust components better match your taste.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the mechanical decision, treat them as the same announced motorcycle: the available evidence does not identify a power, chassis or electronic advantage for either finish. Your final choice should follow an in-person fit check, a dealer-confirmed local specification and a complete price once Triumph publishes figures in early 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Triumph launching a Bonneville 350?

What is the difference between the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black?

The published difference is primarily finish. The T40 has chrome mirrors and grab hoop, brushed aluminium heel guards and a brushed steel exhaust. The T40 Black adds darker paint, gloss-black rims, powder-coated engine casings and a blacked-out header and peashooter silencer.

Is the T40 Black mechanically different?

No variant-specific mechanical advantage has been published. Triumph describes the same 400cc engine tune, chassis concept, rider aids, connectivity and ergonomics for both versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
