Choose a three-row SUV if you genuinely need extra seats on a regular basis—and only after checking that the intended passengers can get into and sit in the third row while enough cargo space remains.
Row count alone does not tell you whether a vehicle will work for your family. Compare specific models and trims in the seating, child-seat, cargo, safety, cost and driving situations you expect to encounter.

Start with how many people ride—and how often
Most two-row SUVs are designed for up to five occupants. If that covers your regular passenger count, a third row may add little practical value. If you regularly need seats for more than five, a three-row model can make those trips possible without relying on a second vehicle.
Separate routine needs from occasional ones. If extra passengers ride only rarely, consider whether you are willing to manage a larger vehicle and the cargo compromises of a third row for the rest of the year. If you carry a larger group frequently, the extra seats may justify those trade-offs.

Check whether the third row is usable for your passengers
A three-row label does not guarantee that every seat suits every passenger. Access, legroom and comfort vary by model, and many midsize SUV third rows are better suited to children than adults. Have the people who will use those seats climb in and sit there for several minutes during your evaluation.
Pay attention to how passengers enter and exit as well as how they sit. A seat that is technically present but difficult to reach may be a poor fit for frequent use, especially for older passengers or anyone with limited mobility.

Test child seats and second-row access in the exact configuration
Child-seat fit depends on the vehicle, seat design and seating position. Bring the child seats you actually use and install them where you expect them to ride. In a three-row SUV, test whether the second-row seat can slide or tilt to let someone reach the third row while a child seat is installed. Do not assume a feature works with every seat or configuration.
Also confirm that the child seats can be installed securely in the positions you need and that the resulting arrangement leaves suitable seating for the rest of the household.

Measure cargo with the seats you will actually use raised
The key question is not just how much a three-row SUV holds with its rear seats folded; it is how much room remains when everyone who needs a seat is aboard. Consumer Reports describes scant cargo space behind the raised third row in many midsize SUVs, and Edmunds found substantial differences between models. Check the exact vehicle rather than assuming a third row leaves room for family luggage.
Bring a stroller, suitcases, sports equipment, mobility aids or other bulky items you regularly carry. Load them with the seats in the positions you expect to use. Examine the cargo opening and floor shape, too: published volume figures cannot tell you whether a particular bulky object will fit through the opening or sit properly in the space.

Compare the full ownership and safety picture
There is no established universal price, fuel-economy or cargo-volume difference that applies to all two-row and three-row SUVs. Compare the exact model year, trim, engine and drivetrain you are considering. Include purchase price, fuel economy, likely operating costs and parking needs; a larger vehicle can be more difficult to park and maneuver in tight garages or urban spaces. Evaluate towing separately against your actual requirements.

Check current crash-test results and safety equipment for the specific vehicle and model year, including protection for rear-seat occupants. IIHS’s updated moderate overlap front test includes a second-row dummy. IIHS also advises that, regardless of a vehicle’s performance in that test, the second row remains the safest position for children under 13. Review the vehicle’s current results and equipment rather than treating seating-row count as a safety rating.

Use a real-world test-drive checklist
- Bring regular passengers. Have the people most likely to use the third row get in and sit there for several minutes.
- Install your child seats. Check fit in the intended positions and try the second-row movement needed to reach the third row with a child seat installed.
- Load your usual gear. Test the stroller, luggage, sports equipment or mobility aids with the seats arranged as they would be on a typical trip.
- Inspect cargo access. Check the opening, floor shape and usable space, not just the published cargo-volume figure.
- Review the exact vehicle’s safety information. Confirm current crash-test results and equipment for its model year and trim, including rear-seat protection.
- Compare the actual powertrains and trims. Check fuel economy and operating costs for the engine, hybrid or plug-in hybrid option, drivetrain and trim you would buy; assess towing needs separately.
- Try the parking situations you face. Consider the vehicle’s size if you regularly use a tight garage or park in crowded urban spaces.
Make the choice based on the trips you actually take
Favor two rows when five seats meet your regular needs and your normal cargo fits. Favor three rows when you regularly need more passenger seats and the third row is comfortable and accessible for the people who will use it, with enough cargo room left for your typical load. If a three-row SUV fails either the passenger or cargo test, its extra seats may not solve the problem you are buying it to solve.
Model-specific details matter. In Edmunds’ 2026 comparison, the Volkswagen Atlas’s second-row seats could slide forward with a child seat in place, and its third row was judged comfortable; the Mazda CX-90’s third row and luggage area were judged cramped. Those observations apply to the models tested, not every vehicle or model year. Check the exact vehicle you plan to buy.
