Will a two-row SUV fit your stroller and luggage? The dependable way to find out is to check the published cargo figure behind the second row, measure your must-have items and the vehicle’s usable opening, then test-fit everything with the rear seat positioned for your family’s passengers. A cubic-foot number is a useful first screen—not a guarantee that a particular item will fit.
Start with the cargo space you will actually use
For everyday family use, look for the cargo capacity behind the second row with those seats in use. A maximum figure measured with seats folded answers a different question: how much room is available when passenger seating is sacrificed.

Specifications belong to a particular model and configuration, not to a whole vehicle class. For example, Hyundai’s 2026 U.S. owner-manual page lists 26.13 cu. ft. behind the second row for the NE1N: Hyundai’s 2026 NE1N luggage-volume specification. That is one vehicle-specific example, not a minimum recommendation for two-row SUVs. Hyundai’s 2026 Palisade SEL page lists 46.3 cu. ft. behind the second row, but the Palisade is a three-row vehicle, so this figure illustrates model-specific reporting rather than serving as a two-row comparison: Hyundai’s 2026 Palisade SEL specifications.
Check the exact model year, trim, drivetrain and seating layout you are considering. Also note how the manufacturer defines the measurement. Kia’s 2025 U.S. MQ4A owner manual, for example, specifies a minimum luggage-volume condition with the rear seatback upright 23 degrees and the cushion backwards: Kia’s 2025 luggage-volume description. Different seat positions or measurement conventions can make figures less directly comparable.

Make a family cargo list before visiting
Write down who normally rides in the vehicle and what you routinely bring along. Separate must-fit items from things you carry only occasionally.
- Everyday items: stroller, diaper bag, groceries or a pet crate.
- Trip items: suitcases, sports gear or other recurring bulky equipment.
- Passenger needs: who rides in the second row and whether the seats need to stay in a particular position.
This list gives you a consistent test for every candidate. If the stroller is essential, for example, do not treat a fit that requires leaving it at home as a pass.

Measure items and the usable cargo space
Measure bulky items
For rigid or awkwardly shaped gear, record length, width and height, including wheels, handles and other protrusions. A retractable tape measure is handy. If an item folds, measure it in the form you would actually load.

Check the space and the opening
Measure cargo-floor length and width, the narrowest points around wheel wells or other intrusions, and the opening’s width and height. Check usable height beneath the cargo cover if you expect to close it. Volume alone cannot establish whether a long or tall object can pass through the opening or fit around the interior’s shape.

A Hyundai Motor Group cargo-dimension presentation provides vehicle-specific opening measurements and example loading arrangements for its named Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento examples; use those as examples, not universal dimensions or loading rules: cargo dimensions and loading examples. For a vehicle you are shopping, prioritize current specifications for that exact model and configuration.
Test-fit at the dealership with the second row in place
- Set the second row where your family needs it for passengers. Do not move it forward or fold it just to make a must-have item fit unless that is genuinely how you will travel.
- Bring the actual stroller, luggage or other bulky gear. If that is impractical, use a substitute with the same dimensions.
- Load and unload each item. Check whether it clears the opening, fits around intrusions and can be positioned without unsafe stacking.
- Close the cargo cover if you need it, and check that cargo does not block your view through the rear window.
- Repeat the same test with each candidate vehicle and note any item that fits only after changing the passenger setup.
A published figure can screen candidates, but only a physical fit check can show whether your particular gear works with your family’s seating needs.

Compare candidates on more than cubic feet
Use the same passenger positions, item list and loading approach each time. Keep published volume separate from measured dimensions and actual fit results; a larger volume does not automatically mean a specific bulky item will be easier to load.
