Gear count and reverse position vary by vehicle, and some cars have a lockout or another mechanism for selecting reverse. Use the diagram printed on the gear lever, if present, or consult the owner’s manual rather than assuming the pattern from another car. For example, Volvo’s manual for the 2017 V90 Cross Country says its six-speed pattern is imprinted on the lever and specifies that reverse should be engaged only when the car is stationary: V90 Cross Country manual gearbox. What if the car is automatic?
An automatic does not have a manual H-pattern to work through. It has a labeled selector, and the exact labels and control arrangement depend on the vehicle.
