How to choose between a small electric car and a budget petrol car (UK guide, 2026)

The cheaper choice depends on more than fuel: compare purchase price, depreciation, insurance, tax, maintenance, charging access and real-world range over the same mileage and ownership period.

Choose the car that gives you the lower total cost and the least daily friction over the period you will actually keep it. A small electric car is usually most compelling when its purchase price is close to the petrol alternative and you can charge at home, particularly on an off-peak tariff. A budget petrol car can be the better fit when an EV costs substantially more to buy, you depend on expensive public charging, or charging access is inconvenient.

This is a UK-focused method rather than a universal verdict. Compare the same ownership term and mileage, then include purchase or finance, depreciation, insurance, tax, servicing, repairs, energy and any charger installation. Finally, check that the EV’s real-world range and charging options suit your regular journeys.

The short answer: when each car makes sense

A small electric car is likely to suit you when

  • You can park at home beside a suitable chargepoint, or have reliable workplace charging.
  • Your annual mileage is high enough for lower energy and maintenance costs to offset any price premium.
  • Your normal journeys fit the car’s usable range and you can charge at destinations on longer trips.
  • The exact vehicle qualifies for any current purchase incentive you are counting.
  • You value quiet, low-effort urban driving and are comfortable planning charging.

A budget petrol car is likely to suit you when

  • The petrol car is materially cheaper to buy or finance after comparing like-for-like age, mileage and condition.
  • You cannot install or regularly use a home charger and public charging would be your main energy source.
  • You make frequent long trips with little time to stop, or often change plans at short notice.
  • You are buying used and the petrol car has a stronger service history, warranty or resale outlook than the available EV.

Neither choice is automatically the cheapest. The result changes with mileage, electricity and petrol prices, insurance, depreciation, tax, maintenance, finance and charging mix.

Compare total ownership cost, not just fuel

Use one ownership period and one mileage assumption for both cars. A three-year, 30,000-mile comparison is only useful if both vehicles are assessed over those same three years and miles. If you are buying used, compare the cars’ ages and expected condition at the start and end of the period.

Cost item Small electric car Budget petrol car How to handle it
Purchase or finance Actual transaction price or total finance cost Actual transaction price or total finance cost Use current listings or dealer quotes for the exact cars; include deposits, interest and fees.
Depreciation Expected resale value minus purchase cost Expected resale value minus purchase cost Estimate from comparable age, mileage and condition. Do not assume either fuel type always depreciates faster.
Insurance Your quote for the specific registration and driver Your quote for the specific registration and driver Obtain like-for-like quotes; premiums vary by postcode, age, use and claims history.
Vehicle tax Apply the current UK rules to the car’s registration year and list price Apply the current UK rules to the car’s registration year and emissions Rules and thresholds can change, so verify them at the time of purchase.
Servicing and repairs Scheduled service, tyres, brakes and any battery-related warranty exposure Scheduled service, tyres, brakes, exhaust and engine-related repairs Use the manufacturer’s schedule and a condition-based allowance for used cars.
Energy Home, workplace and public charging separately Petrol bought at the prices you actually pay Apply each rate to the miles supplied by that source.
Charging equipment Chargepoint, installation, electrical work and any parking arrangement Normally none Include only costs you would actually incur; do not treat a home charger as mandatory for every EV buyer.

For a used car, add battery-health information where available, remaining battery and vehicle warranties, service records, tyres and any imminent repair. Government guidance does not establish model-specific depreciation, insurance, battery condition or repair costs, so verify those for each candidate vehicle.

A personal calculation you can repeat

  1. Fix the assumptions. Write down your annual mileage, ownership period, expected mileage at sale and whether the cars are new or used. Keep these identical for both options.
  2. Record the real purchase cost. Use the cash price or the total amount payable under each finance quote. If an EV grant applies, subtract it only after checking the exact model’s eligibility.
  3. Estimate end value. Use current adverts for cars of comparable age, mileage, trim and condition. Treat the difference between purchase price and expected sale price as depreciation.
  4. Collect insurance and tax quotes. Quote the exact cars and your circumstances rather than using an average premium.
  5. Price servicing and repairs. Enter scheduled service prices, tyres and a realistic reserve for repairs. For used EVs, check battery and drivetrain warranty terms; for used petrol cars, check timing-belt, clutch, exhaust and engine requirements where relevant.
  6. Split EV charging. Estimate the percentage of miles charged at home, at work and in public. Record the tariff or session price for each.
  7. Calculate energy cost. Multiply miles from each source by that source’s cost per mile, then add the three results. For petrol, divide the car’s real-world miles per gallon into annual miles and multiply by the petrol price you pay.
  8. Add one-off infrastructure costs. Include a chargepoint and installation only if you need to buy them. Spread that cost over the ownership period if you want an annual figure.
  9. Compare the totals. Add every annual cost and depreciation, then divide by total miles for a cost-per-mile result. Run a second calculation with higher public-charging use or a different mileage to see how sensitive the decision is.

A calculator can help organise the inputs, but it is not universal evidence. For example, the Motability Scheme Cost Comparison asks for an existing vehicle, mileage and ability to charge at home; its output depends on those entries and audience.

Is an electric car cheaper to run than a petrol car?

Often, but the charging source determines how large the difference is. The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (guidance updated 10 April 2025) estimated that home charging for a medium-sized EV cost about 8p per mile, compared with roughly 13p–17p per mile to fuel a petrol or diesel vehicle, using price conditions described as of January 2024. Those are dated estimates, not a guaranteed rate for your car or tariff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same guidance says public-network EV charging was roughly equivalent, on average, to fuelling an equivalent petrol car. A driver who uses mostly rapid or public charging can therefore lose much of the EV’s energy-cost advantage. Your actual result depends on charger type, session fees, subscriptions, idle charges, electricity tariff and vehicle efficiency.

A Department for Transport parliamentary answer dated 19 March 2026 says drivers of a new EV may save up to £1,400 a year on running and maintenance compared with petrol-car drivers when they can charge at home on off-peak tariffs. “Up to” is a conditional maximum, not a forecast for every small or used EV. It does not settle purchase price, depreciation, insurance or finance.

Charging at home: the practical dividing line

Ask whether you can park beside a suitable electricity supply most nights, not merely whether your home has electricity. A driveway, allocated bay or permission to cross a pavement may be necessary, and installation can require a survey, cable route and landlord or local-authority approval. If you cannot reliably park near the charger, model a public-charging lifestyle instead.

Home charging

  • Usually offers the lowest and most predictable EV energy cost when paired with a suitable off-peak tariff.
  • Lets you start most days with the charge you need without visiting a station.
  • Requires upfront equipment and installation costs, plus a parking arrangement that remains available.
  • Needs tariff checks: an off-peak rate may have time windows, smart-meter requirements or terms that change.

Workplace and destination charging

Workplace charging can reduce home dependence, but confirm access hours, queueing, pricing and whether the facility is available every day you need it. Destination chargers at supermarkets, hotels or car parks are useful supplements, not a guarantee of cheap energy.

Public charging

Check the chargers on your actual routes, their payment methods, connector and power, reliability, opening hours and price. The UK had over 120,000 public chargers on 1 April 2026, according to the UK Government Clean Energy Campaign. That national total does not show whether a convenient, working charger is near your home, workplace or regular destinations.

If you cannot charge at home, an EV can still work, but calculate the cost and time of your real public-charging pattern. Include walking or parking time, possible queues and the risk of needing a backup location. Compare that with the value you place on petrol refuelling’s speed and flexibility.

Purchase price and the Electric Car Grant

The UK Government Clean Energy Campaign describes support of up to £3,750 for eligible new electric cars with a recommended retail price below £37,000, as accessed on 13 October 2026. Treat this as a scheme description, not an automatic discount: check the current rules, the car’s exact list price and eligibility before including it in your calculation. It does not apply to every model, used car or price configuration.

Compare the post-incentive EV price with the petrol car’s actual price and likely resale value. A cheaper petrol car can remain the lower-cost choice over a short ownership period if depreciation and finance dominate. Conversely, a modest EV price premium can be recovered over higher mileage when home energy and maintenance costs are lower.

Range: match the car to your journeys

Start with your routine, not the headline range. List your daily round trip, weekly motorway use, school or work detours, and the longest journey you make regularly. Then check whether you can recharge at home or at the destination before the return trip.

Nationally, 99% of car journeys in England are under 100 miles, according to the 2025 government guidance. That statistic does not describe every driver: a commuter, rural household or person without destination charging may have very different requirements.

Use the model’s official range to compare cars consistently, then allow for weather, speed, heating, payload, hills and battery state. The Vehicle Certification Agency explains: Official energy consumption and range figures are obtained under specific laboratory test conditions to allow direct comparison between different models. Read its zero- and ultra-low-emission vehicle guidance for the qualification behind those figures. Do not treat a laboratory number as a promise of your personal real-world range.

Long-trip questions to answer before buying

  • What is the longest regular trip, including the return journey?
  • Where can you charge at the destination, and what happens if that charger is occupied?
  • Does the car accept the charging power available on your routes?
  • How much cold-weather or motorway margin do you want before stopping?
  • Would a short rapid-charge stop fit your routine, or would it be a recurring inconvenience?

Maintenance, reliability and used-car risk

EVs generally have fewer engine-related service items, but that does not make every EV cheaper to own. Tyres, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, software and body repairs still cost money. Check the manufacturer’s service schedule, warranty exclusions and roadside-assistance terms.

For a used EV, request battery-health evidence where available, confirm the remaining battery and drivetrain warranty, inspect charging cables and test both AC and DC charging if possible. Ask whether the car has had accident repairs or prolonged storage. For a used petrol car, verify service intervals and records, timing-belt or chain requirements, clutch and exhaust condition, emissions-system repairs and any outstanding recalls. These checks can outweigh a small difference in energy cost.

Insurance is model-specific. Obtain quotes before committing, especially for an EV with expensive body panels, sensors or a high replacement battery value. Tax treatment depends on registration date and current UK rules; verify the position for each vehicle rather than assuming one fuel type is always exempt or cheaper.

Environmental difference

The 2025 Office for Zero Emission Vehicles guidance says a typical EV produces around two-thirds less greenhouse gas over its lifetime than an equivalent petrol car, including battery production and disposal. That is a typical comparison, not a model-specific lifecycle assessment. Manufacturing, electricity generation, vehicle size, mileage and end-of-life treatment all affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Environmental benefit is therefore an additional decision factor, not proof that a particular EV is cheaper for your household. The Climate Change Committee’s 2026 household-cost assessment compares high- and low-carbon technologies under stated price and policy scenarios; its scenario results should not be converted into a universal saving for every car owner.

Decision rules for common UK situations

You have a driveway and drive 12,000 or more miles a year

Price an EV first. Home off-peak charging can make the energy difference meaningful, and higher mileage gives savings more opportunity to offset a purchase premium. Still compare depreciation, insurance and finance; a heavily discounted or better-maintained petrol car may win over a short term.

You live in a flat with no assigned parking

Begin with charging logistics. Map reliable public or workplace chargers and calculate their real prices and time. If the pattern is expensive or unreliable, a budget petrol car may be the lower-friction choice even if an EV would cost less per mile at home.

You drive low mileage and mainly short urban trips

Low mileage limits the amount of energy saving available. Compare the purchase-price gap, tax, insurance and depreciation carefully. An EV can still be attractive for its driving characteristics and emissions, but do not assume low annual mileage automatically makes it cheaper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You make frequent motorway trips

Check usable motorway range, rapid-charging speed, charger availability and winter margin. A petrol car may save time if stops are difficult, while an EV can work well if your routes have dependable charging and you are comfortable planning stops.

You are choosing between used cars

Condition and history come first. Compare battery-health evidence and warranty on the EV with engine, clutch, emissions and timing-system condition on the petrol car. Use actual listings and insurance quotes rather than new-car running-cost headlines.

Common mistakes that change the answer

  • Comparing fuel cost only. Purchase price, depreciation, finance, insurance, tax, maintenance and charging equipment can outweigh energy savings.
  • Using a public-charging price for a home-charging conclusion. Model each charging source separately.
  • Assuming every EV qualifies for a grant. Verify the exact model, trim, list price and current scheme rules.
  • Relying on laboratory range as a trip guarantee. Allow for weather, speed, heating and charging availability.
  • Ignoring parking rights. A theoretical charger is not useful if you cannot park beside it or obtain permission to install it.
  • Using average insurance or repair costs. Quotes and condition vary sharply by driver and vehicle.
  • Comparing different ownership periods. Keep mileage, years and end condition consistent.
  • Assuming national charger numbers solve local access. Check your own routes and backup chargers.

A final pre-purchase checklist

  1. Write the same annual mileage and ownership period for both cars.
  2. Collect cash or finance prices for the exact vehicles.
  3. Estimate resale value using comparable age and mileage.
  4. Obtain insurance quotes and verify current tax treatment.
  5. Price servicing, tyres and likely repairs from the service history.
  6. For the EV, confirm home, work and public charging access, prices and installation requirements.
  7. Check official range and charging capability, then test them against your longest regular trips.
  8. Verify any Electric Car Grant eligibility before subtracting it.
  9. Run a base case and a stressed case with more public charging, higher energy prices or lower resale value.
  10. Choose the option that remains affordable and practical in both cases, not merely the one with the lowest optimistic fuel figure.
