Choose a car loan if you want to buy and keep, sell, or trade the vehicle; choose a lease if you want to use it for a set term and can live with its mileage, condition, and return rules. Neither option is automatically cheaper. Compare written offers for the same vehicle over the same time horizon, including the costs and obligations that fall outside the monthly payment.
What is the difference between a car loan and a lease?
A car loan finances a purchase. Your payments reduce the amount you owe, and when the loan is paid off, you own the vehicle. You may have equity before then if the vehicle’s market value exceeds the remaining loan balance, but that is not guaranteed: the balance can be higher than the car’s value, especially early in the loan or after a drop in resale value.

A lease is a contract to use a vehicle for a specified term and mileage allowance. The lease payment does not normally build ownership. At the end, you generally return the vehicle, although some contracts include an option to buy it. Whether you can purchase it, and at what price, depends on the contract. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes leasing as similar to renting and notes that payments do not go toward owning the car unless there is a purchase option (CFPB’s leasing-versus-buying guide).
| Question | Car loan | Lease |
|---|---|---|
| What are you paying for? | A vehicle purchase, financed over time. | Use of a vehicle for a defined term and mileage allowance. |
| What happens at the end? | Once the loan is paid, you own the car. If the loan is not paid off, you still owe the remaining balance. | You normally return the car, subject to the contract. A purchase option is contract-dependent. |
| What affects the payment? | Among other terms, the amount financed, APR, and loan length. | Expected depreciation during the lease, plus rent charges, taxes, and fees. |
| What can create extra costs? | Interest, taxes, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and the financial effect of resale value. | Possible excess-mileage, wear, damage, missing-equipment, maintenance, insurance, early-termination, and end-of-term charges under the contract. |

How do you compare the real cost?
Start with the same vehicle and the same period of use. A monthly-payment comparison alone can be misleading: the loan may last longer, the lease may require money upfront, and the two options leave you with different things at the end. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers not to focus only on the monthly payment because total loan cost depends on the negotiated vehicle price, APR, and loan length (FTC guide to financing or leasing a car).
Choose a time horizon before comparing
Decide how long you realistically expect to keep or use the vehicle—for example, three years or six years—and compare both options over that same period. Do not compare three years of lease payments with the full cost of a six-year loan without accounting for what happens after the third year. If you sell a car before its loan is paid, include the payoff balance and expected sale proceeds. If you plan to keep it beyond the loan term, include the later period when you may have no loan payment but still have insurance, maintenance, registration, fuel, and repair costs.
For a lease, include all scheduled payments and amounts due at signing during the chosen period, as well as charges the contract could impose when you return the car. If your horizon extends beyond the lease, determine what you would do next and account for the next vehicle separately. A lease’s residual value—the estimated value used in the lease calculation—is not the same as a guaranteed resale price for an owner.

Use a total-cost worksheet
For each offer, record the cash you expect to pay during the comparison period, then separately record what you own or owe at the end. That separation matters: a loan’s remaining balance is a liability, while a car’s resale value is an asset only if you can actually sell it for that amount. A lease generally leaves you without a vehicle after return unless you exercise a contract purchase option or make another arrangement.

- Loan: down payment and other amounts due upfront, scheduled payments, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs, then the estimated sale value minus any loan payoff if you sell during the period. If keeping the car, note its estimated value and any outstanding balance at the comparison date rather than treating the vehicle as cash.
- Lease: amount due at signing, scheduled payments, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and any mileage, wear, damage, missing-equipment, or end-of-term charges that apply under the contract. If you will buy the vehicle, include the written purchase-option terms and any costs tied to that choice.
Ownership expenses vary by vehicle and location. The CFPB specifically recommends looking beyond payments to costs such as taxes, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, repairs, and resale value (CFPB’s auto-loan comparison guidance). Use estimates that match your circumstances rather than assuming two vehicles or two drivers will have identical costs.
What should you compare on a car-loan offer?
Ask for a written offer and compare the financial terms, not just the payment quoted by a salesperson. A lower payment can result from borrowing less, paying more upfront, or stretching repayment over more months; those are materially different deals.
Read the figures together
- Amount financed: the amount you will borrow after the transaction’s price, down payment, trade-in treatment, taxes, fees, and other financed amounts are accounted for. Confirm what has been included.
- APR: the annual percentage rate shown in the offer. Compare APRs alongside the amount financed and term; do not assume a lower payment means a lower rate or lower total cost.
- Term and monthly payment: record the repayment length and payment, and check that the payment schedule fits your budget.
- Total of payments and upfront cash: note the total scheduled payments and any down payment or other amount due. A payment figure by itself omits upfront cash and may not make offers comparable.
- Trade-in and contract terms: verify how the trade-in is valued and applied, and read any other terms that affect what you owe or when you can pay it off.
Compare offers from more than one creditor or dealer, keeping the vehicle price and transaction assumptions consistent. The FTC recommends obtaining the vehicle’s out-the-door price in writing before discussing financing, so a change in price does not get obscured by a payment quote.
Understand the cost of a longer term
A longer loan term can lower the monthly payment by spreading repayment over more months, but it can increase total interest and leave you owing more than the vehicle is worth for longer. A CFPB illustration—not a current market rate or an individual quote—shows the effect on a $20,000 loan at 4.75%: total interest is $1,498 for 36 months, $1,999 for 48 months, $2,508 for 60 months, and $3,024 for 72 months. These figures are from the CFPB’s loan-comparison example, not a prediction of what you will pay (CFPB loan comparison).

The CFPB’s 2023 consumer guide describes typical auto-loan terms as three to seven years. That is a general range, not a recommendation or a guarantee that a particular lender will offer those terms. Compare the total scheduled payments and the time you expect to keep the car, not only the payment that fits this month’s budget.
What should you compare on a lease offer?
Request the full lease terms in writing. A lease payment generally reflects expected depreciation during the term, plus rent charges, taxes, and fees. Because the payment does not ordinarily buy the vehicle, a lower monthly figure does not establish that leasing is the less expensive choice overall.
Record the lease’s key numbers
- Amount due at signing and total scheduled payments: note both. Add them when comparing cash paid over the term; do not treat a low advertised payment as the full lease cost.
- Negotiated vehicle cost or capitalized cost: confirm the vehicle cost used to calculate the lease, including any amounts added to it.
- Residual value and purchase option: record the residual value used in the calculation, whether the contract gives you a purchase option, and the option’s stated price and terms. Do not assume every lease permits a buyout or that the residual is a guaranteed market value.
- Rent charge, term, and mileage allowance: write down the charge, length of the lease, allowed mileage per year and in total, and the overage rate for exceeding the limit.
- Return and use obligations: get the end-of-lease fees, wear standards, treatment of damage or missing equipment, maintenance and insurance requirements, and the method for calculating early termination.
According to the CFPB, terms such as vehicle cost, residual, down payment, trade-in value, rent charge, mileage limit, and purchase option may be negotiable. Ask which parts of the specific offer can be changed and request a revised written version before deciding. Do not assume an advertised payment reflects the same upfront cash, mileage allowance, or end-of-term terms as another offer.
Translate the payment example into a comparison
The CFPB’s worked lease illustration uses a negotiated vehicle cost of $20,000 and an $8,000 residual after three years. The difference—$12,000—is expected depreciation before rent charges, taxes, and fees. It demonstrates how depreciation contributes to a lease payment; it is not an estimate for any particular vehicle or an all-in price. The actual contract’s numbers and charges are what matter.

Will your mileage and vehicle use fit a lease?
Estimate your driving from routine trips, commuting, family needs, and likely changes—not just last year’s odometer. A mileage allowance that seems adequate now may not suit a longer commute or a new job. Compare your expected total miles for the lease term with the contract limit, and calculate the cost of a plausible overage using the written per-mile charge.
The CFPB’s 2023 guide says most leases restrict mileage to 10,000–15,000 miles per year. The FTC’s 2022 consumer guide says annual limits in most standard leases are 15,000 miles or less. These are broad descriptions from different official guides, not a promise about your offer; use the allowance and overage rate in the actual contract. If your driving is unpredictable or likely to exceed the written limit, include that uncertainty in the decision rather than assuming you will stay under it.
Also consider how you use and care for a car. A lease may charge for excess wear, damage, or missing equipment under its stated standards. An owner does not face lease-return charges, but wear and damage can still reduce resale value. Compare the lease’s definition of acceptable condition with the way you expect to use the vehicle, and ask how any inspection or charge is handled in the contract.

Which option fits your priorities?
| Your priority or circumstance | What it points you to examine |
|---|---|
| You want to keep the same vehicle after payments end. | A loan provides a path to ownership after payoff. Compare the full financing cost and the vehicle’s likely upkeep over the period you plan to keep it. |
| You prefer changing vehicles on a set schedule. | A lease may fit a defined use period, but compare amounts due, return rules, mileage, and the cost and terms of your next vehicle. |
| You drive a high or unpredictable number of miles. | Check the lease allowance and overage charge against realistic mileage. A loan avoids lease mileage charges, though miles can affect eventual resale value. |
| You want the freedom to sell or change plans. | With a loan, a sale requires settling the remaining balance; compare payoff and expected sale value. With a lease, early return does not automatically end what you owe—check the contract’s early-termination calculation. |
| You want a small monthly payment. | Compare total cost, cash due at signing, loan term or lease obligations, and end-of-period position. A smaller payment alone does not identify the better deal. |
| You need to minimize cash due upfront. | Compare each offer’s actual amount due at signing or down payment and its resulting payment and total cost. Do not compare offers with different upfront assumptions as though they were equivalent. |
These are decision prompts, not universal rules. Your expected mileage, likely time with the vehicle, ability to absorb repair or return costs, and whether ownership at the end matters can change which factor deserves the most weight. A lease’s shorter term is not automatically more flexible if its early-termination terms are expensive; a loan’s ownership path is not automatically a financial advantage if the car’s value falls below the loan balance.

How to compare offers step by step
- Set the comparison: choose the same make, model, trim, and equipment, and choose a realistic time horizon for both options.
- Get the out-the-door price: request it in writing before discussing financing. This makes it easier to tell whether offers differ because of vehicle price or financing structure.
- Collect written loan offers: record amount financed, APR, term, payment, total of payments, down payment, trade-in treatment, and other contract terms. Seek offers from more than one creditor or dealer.
- Collect the full lease terms: record amount due at signing, scheduled payments, negotiated vehicle cost, residual value, rent charge, term, mileage allowance, overage rate, return fees and standards, purchase-option terms, insurance and service requirements, and early-termination calculation.
- Estimate costs outside the payment: for both choices, account for taxes, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and repairs; for a loan, also estimate resale value and any payoff at the comparison date.
- Calculate the end position: write down whether you own the vehicle, owe a loan balance, will return it, or may buy it under the lease. Include applicable charges rather than treating the last scheduled payment as the end of every obligation.
- Read and keep the contract: check that the signed terms match the written offer, ask about anything unclear, and take a signed copy. Do not rely on an advertisement or verbal payment quote to define your obligations.
If you cannot obtain comparable written terms, the cost comparison is not ready. Ask for the missing figures rather than filling gaps with assumptions. Rates, incentives, taxes, fees, and eligibility vary with geography, credit, vehicle, and contract, so general examples cannot substitute for the offers in front of you.
What can go wrong, and how do you avoid it?
Comparing payment quotes instead of deals
Two payments can look similar while representing different vehicle prices, amounts due upfront, terms, or mileage limits. Put the full written terms side by side and normalize the comparison period. The FTC’s advice to focus on negotiated price, APR, and term applies to loans; for a lease, the corresponding check also needs the mileage, signing amount, and return obligations.
Assuming you can end a lease by handing back the keys
An early return does not necessarily end lease payments or other obligations. The contract’s early-termination method determines the consequences, which can be costly. Before signing, locate that calculation and ask how it would apply if you needed to leave early. If circumstances change later, contact the leasing company and review the contract rather than assuming a return is a clean exit.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ignoring wear, equipment, or required services
Ask what the contract treats as excess wear, how damage is assessed, what equipment must be returned, and whether specific maintenance or insurance requirements apply. Keep records of maintenance and the vehicle’s condition. These are not merely hypothetical details: the FTC identifies mileage, wear, damage, missing equipment, maintenance, insurance, and early termination as possible lease-cost factors.
Overlooking an underwater loan
If the loan balance is greater than the car’s value, selling or trading it may not cover the payoff. Check the balance and a realistic estimate of market value before relying on a future sale to fund a different vehicle. Longer loan terms can increase interest and extend the period in which this mismatch is a risk, as the CFPB’s term illustration demonstrates.
Letting a trade-in conceal the numbers
Ask for the out-the-door vehicle price, trade-in value, amount financed, and any balance carried into the new transaction as separate written figures. This helps reveal whether a low payment comes from a genuinely lower cost or from a different down payment, trade-in treatment, or repayment period.
What should you verify before signing?
- Does the written vehicle price match the car and equipment you agreed to buy or lease?
- Are taxes, fees, trade-in value, and amounts due upfront clearly listed?
- For a loan, do the APR, amount financed, term, payment, and total of payments match the offer you compared?
- For a lease, are the residual, rent charge, term, mileage, overage rate, return standards, end fees, and purchase option clearly stated?
- Have you reviewed early-termination terms and obligations for insurance, maintenance, and returned equipment?
- Do you have the complete signed contract and understand what happens if you sell, return, or keep the vehicle?
The key is not to select the lower headline payment. Choose the contract whose total cash cost, end position, and restrictions match how long you will use the vehicle, how far you will drive, and whether you want to own it.
