A 110cc scooter can be the sensible choice for mostly solo urban riding at modest speeds, while a larger maxi-scooter can be worth its extra size when your normal trips include faster roads, steep hills, a passenger, substantial cargo or a need for more performance reserve. There is no universal winner, and “175cc” is not a precise specification class: named models in different markets can be 156cc, 157cc or another displacement.
Use the framework below to compare the two exact model-years available in your country. Confirm local licensing, registration, insurance, pricing, parts and service before paying a deposit.

Start with the actual scooters, not the labels
Displacement is the engine’s swept volume. It is useful shorthand, but it does not tell you the scooter’s curb mass, wheelbase, seat shape, braking system, suspension, wind protection, fuel capacity, gearing or electronic equipment. Two scooters with similar engine sizes can feel very different, and a nominal “175cc” model may be sold as a 160cc-class machine in another market.

The PCX160 is listed at 156cm³, while the United States 2026 PCX160 is listed at 157cc. Neither is exactly 175cc, yet both are commonly considered larger, maxi-style scooters. Treat the model name, model year and market specification as the reference point.

The Japanese PCX and PCX160 weights differ by only 1kg and their listed seat heights are identical. That is why you should never assume that a 110cc scooter is automatically easier to move, or that a larger scooter will automatically be too tall or heavy.
Match the scooter to your roads and load
Mostly urban, solo trips
A 110cc scooter is often the logical first candidate when your normal journeys are short, mostly solo and conducted on city streets with frequent stops. Its appeal is not a guaranteed fuel-cost saving or a universal handling advantage; those depend on the exact model. The relevant questions are whether its published power is adequate for your local traffic, whether it can hold your daily items, and whether you can place both feet securely during repeated low-speed stops.
Faster arterials and longer commutes
When your route regularly uses roads where traffic moves quickly, a larger scooter may provide more acceleration reserve and reduce the need to operate near its limit. Compare each manufacturer’s power and torque figures and read the operating conditions under which they were measured. Do not convert displacement into a promised top speed or a guaranteed overtaking time. Aerodynamics, rider mass, wind, gradient, transmission calibration and speed limits all matter.
Hills and high-elevation routes
Climbing performance depends on available power at the engine speeds used by the continuously variable transmission, as well as total mass and gradient. A larger scooter is a reasonable candidate if your route includes sustained steep hills, but confirm the result with a test ride on a representative incline. A 110cc scooter may be perfectly adequate on gentle urban slopes and frustrating on a steep road with a passenger.
Passenger and cargo duty
List the heaviest combination you will actually carry: rider, passenger, helmet and clothing, work equipment, groceries and any top box contents. Check the owner’s manual for the permitted load and maximum axle limits for each candidate. Then inspect the passenger footrests, seat length, grab handles, rear suspension adjustment and under-seat storage. A larger body can offer better wind protection and carrying options, but external dimensions can make a full load harder to maneuver in a tight parking space.

Occasional versus routine two-up riding
If a passenger is carried only a few times a year, do not accept daily bulk and weight that make every solo trip awkward without first comparing both scooters in person. If two-up travel is routine, evaluate acceleration from a stop, hill starts, brake feel with the combined mass and the passenger’s seating position. The exact model’s published power, torque and weight are more useful than the “175” or “110” badge.
Compare performance without overpromising
Request the complete specification sheet for both candidates: peak power, peak torque, engine speed at each peak, transmission type, wheel and tire sizes, rated payload and any stated maximum speed. A larger engine generally gives the transmission more potential to maintain speed under load, but no standardized, independent head-to-head test of a 175cc and a 110cc scooter is published. Therefore, any conclusion about acceleration or top speed must remain a model-specific expectation, not a class-wide fact.
For context, Honda Japan lists 15.8PS at 8,500rpm for its 156cm³ PCX160 and 12.5PS at 8,750rpm for its 124cm³ PCX. Honda Japan lists 9.0N·m at 5,750rpm for the current Dio110. These numbers show why torque and power curves matter, but they do not predict your result without the scooters’ gearing, total load, road and weather.
Check physical fit and low-speed manageability
Mass and how it is measured
Compare curb, wet or ready-to-ride mass using the manufacturer’s definition. Honda’s US 2026 PCX160 figure of 291lb includes standard equipment, required fluids and a full fuel tank. A Japanese “vehicle weight” figure may use a different convention. Ask the dealer what is included before treating two numbers as directly comparable.
Seat height is only the beginning
Measure seat height alongside seat width, the point where the seat narrows, floorboard position and handlebar reach. A wide seat can increase your effective reach even when the published height is modest. Sit in normal riding clothing, put both feet down, turn the bars fully and roll the scooter backward using your feet. If you must lean heavily to catch it, a lighter or narrower candidate may be safer in daily parking maneuvers.

Dimensions, turning and parking
Record overall length, width, wheelbase and turning-circle information when available. Practice a U-turn, a reverse push out of your parking space and a slow, full-lock turn. The larger scooter’s longer body and heavier steering may be manageable on the road but inconvenient in a narrow garage or crowded curbside space. Conversely, a very small scooter can feel nervous on broken pavement or in wind; only a ride on your roads can reveal that trade-off.
Audit the braking and safety equipment
Read the brake specification wheel by wheel. Honda’s US 2026 PCX160, for example, is listed with a 220mm front disc with ABS and a 130mm rear drum. That is a specification for that US model, not a rule for every PCX160 or every larger scooter. Determine whether ABS is fitted to the front wheel, rear wheel or both, and whether it is standard or optional in your market.
Also compare tire dimensions and brands supplied as original equipment, lighting, mirrors, horn location, side-stand interlock, traction-control claims and the availability of replacement parts. Equipment does not replace training: practice progressive braking, keep both tires correctly inflated and leave extra stopping distance on wet or contaminated surfaces.
Evaluate fuel economy and running cost correctly
Fuel ratings are test-cycle results, not promises about an individual commute. Honda Japan reports WMTC figures of 44.9km/L for the PCX160 (class 2-1, one rider) and 47.7km/L for the PCX (class 1, one rider). Because the classes differ, those values are not a perfectly matched test. Do not claim that the smaller scooter will save a fixed percentage unless both candidates have compatible test methods and you have local fuel prices.

- Fuel price multiplied by your measured or conservatively estimated annual distance.
- Scheduled service intervals, oil and filter quantities, belt and roller replacement, tire sizes and brake components.
- Expected downtime and the distance to an authorized service outlet.
- Financing interest, storage, security equipment and seasonal riding gear.
Use the larger scooter’s fuel capacity only as a range convenience, not proof of lower consumption. The US PCX160’s listed capacity is 2.1 gallons; actual range depends on riding conditions and the point at which you refuel.
Confirm legal and local-market requirements
Licensing and registration categories are set by the jurisdiction, not by a global definition of “scooter” or “maxi-scooter.” A 110cc machine may fall into a different license, insurance or road-access class than a 156–175cc machine, or both may be treated the same. Check the transport authority’s current rules for engine displacement, power, learner restrictions, passenger authorization, helmet standards and access to limited-access roads.
Ask local dealers to confirm the exact model-year code, emissions certification, warranty terms, parts lead times and recall status. Honda announced revised-color PCX and PCX160 models for Japan with a February 6, 2025 on-sale date; that historical announcement does not prove that a particular dealer has stock now. Availability must be checked locally.
A step-by-step buying process
- Write your real use case. Record weekly distance, fastest road, longest continuous ride, steepest hill, passenger frequency, typical cargo and where you park.
- Set non-negotiables. Examples include a specific license class, front ABS, enough payload for your equipment, a seat you can manage and a dealer within practical distance.
- Collect model-year specifications. Obtain displacement, power, torque, mass definition, dimensions, seat height, brakes, tire sizes, fuel capacity and payload for both exact candidates.
- Check compatibility of claims. Mark whether weights are curb or dry, whether fuel figures use the same test cycle and whether equipment is standard in your market.
- Price ownership locally. Get written purchase, insurance, service and parts estimates rather than relying on a generic “larger costs more” assumption.
- Test ride unloaded and loaded. Ride your normal route if possible, then repeat starts, stops, a hill and a low-speed maneuver with the intended cargo. Only carry a passenger where legal and where the dealer permits it.
- Score the result. Give separate scores for performance reserve, fit, low-speed control, braking equipment, storage, operating cost and local support. Weight the categories according to your use instead of averaging them blindly.
- Verify paperwork before payment. Match the vehicle identification number, model year, warranty, included equipment and registration documents to the written quotation.
What to do during the test ride
- Cold-start both scooters and note starting behavior, warning lights and idle stability.
- Check that your knees, feet and wrists remain comfortable after at least 20 minutes.
- Accelerate onto the fastest road you normally use; observe whether you have usable reserve without exceeding legal limits.
- Repeat a hill start with your normal load and check whether the transmission engages smoothly.
- Brake progressively from several speeds in a safe, legal area; feel for straight-line stability and ABS intervention if equipped.
- Perform a walking-speed full-lock turn, a U-turn and a reverse push. These often expose weight and width differences better than a short straight ride.
- Inspect storage with your helmet, lock, rain gear and work bag. Measure the opening, not just the stated volume.
- Ask the dealer to demonstrate the center stand, side stand, fuel filler, oil-check procedure and any adjustable screen or suspension.
Common decision mistakes
Buying by displacement badge
A “175cc” label does not establish a particular power output, weight or brake package. Start with the exact specification sheet and a test ride.

Comparing incompatible fuel ratings
Do not place WMTC class 1 and class 2-1 numbers in one ranking without explaining the test-class difference.
Ignoring load and hills
A solo showroom ride on level pavement says little about a daily passenger, heavy tools or a sustained climb. Recreate those conditions safely.
Using another market’s specification
The Japanese PCX160 listing of 156cm³, 134kg and 764mm is not interchangeable with the US 2026 PCX160 listing of 157cc, 291lb curb weight and a 30.1-inch seat. Select the specification for the country where you will register and service the scooter.

Decision examples
Solo city rider with tight parking
If your trips are short, speeds are moderate, you carry little and your parking area is narrow, begin with the 110cc candidates. Choose the larger scooter only if its fit, price and maneuverability are equally acceptable and you value its additional reserve enough to justify the extra bulk.
Commuter on fast roads with occasional hills
Give the larger candidate priority for the test ride. Verify that its brakes, tires, wind protection and seating position suit the route, then compare insurance and service costs. A smaller scooter remains viable if it maintains your legal cruising speed comfortably with your actual load.
Frequent passenger and cargo user
Start with payload, passenger space and braking equipment, then evaluate hill starts and low-speed balance. Engine size is only one part of whether the scooter can perform this duty without becoming tiring or unstable.
Rider uncertain about physical fit
Test both with the same clothing and luggage. If one model’s seat width, steering lock or mass makes routine stops and parking stressful, that practical disadvantage outweighs a nominal performance advantage.
The practical rule
Choose the 110cc scooter when its legal classification, power, payload, braking equipment and fit cover your real routes and it is easier to control and support locally. Choose the larger maxi-scooter when your exact model provides a meaningful performance or load margin that you will use regularly, and its additional size, cost and weight do not compromise your parking, low-speed control or physical comfort. If neither candidate passes the same route-and-load test, keep shopping rather than letting the displacement number decide.
