Advertised range is a test-cycle result, not a guaranteed daily distance; the right scooter is the one that leaves a practical reserve, fits your electrical installation and has support for your exact variant.
1. Start with the commute, not the biggest range number
Write down the normal distance from home to work or college and back. Add predictable detours such as school drop-offs, a market visit or a station transfer. Measure the route you actually ride rather than relying on a straight-line map distance. If the route changes by season or shift, use the longer routine when comparing scooters.

Do not plan to finish every day at the battery warning. Traffic, hills, a passenger, heavy luggage, low tyre pressure, weather and an aggressive riding style all increase consumption. A manufacturer may also describe range in a particular riding mode with a new battery. Select a model with enough headroom that an ordinary detour does not turn into a search for a charger.
What changes energy use
- Road and traffic conditions, elevation and frequent stop-start riding.
- Tyre condition and inflation pressure.
- Riding style, sustained high speed and repeated hard acceleration.
- Rider, passenger and luggage weight.
- Battery age, temperature and the selected ride mode.
These factors explain why two riders can see different distances from the same charge. Treat an advertised figure as a comparison within the maker’s stated test, then validate the result against your own route and reserve requirement.

2. Read range specifications correctly
Look for the test cycle, riding mode, battery condition and exact variant beside every range claim. For example, Chetak’s FAQ reports the following figures as IDC range under AIS 040, in Eco mode, on a full charge with a new battery:
| Variant | Published IDC range | Conditions stated by the manufacturer | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chetak 3501 | 153 km | IDC under AIS 040; Eco mode; full charge; new battery | Use as a test-cycle reference, not a guaranteed commute distance. |
| Chetak 3502 | 153 km | IDC under AIS 040; Eco mode; full charge; new battery | Compare only with scooters measured on an equivalent basis. |
| Chetak 3503 | 151 km | IDC under AIS 040; Eco mode; full charge; new battery | A two-kilometre difference on paper should not decide a purchase without considering equipment and charging. |
| Chetak 3001 | 127 km | IDC under AIS 040; Eco mode; full charge; new battery | Check whether the lower stated range still covers your routine with reserve. |
Chetak also notes that speed depends on road and traffic conditions, elevation, tyre condition and inflation, riding style and load. Those qualifications apply to the practical decision even when a brochure displays one headline number. There is no independent, like-for-like real-world range test in the available evidence, so do not assign a universal “real-world range” to these or other scooters.
A simple reserve calculation
- Record the longest normal round trip, including a predictable detour.
- Add the distance you want available for an unplanned short trip or a missed charging opportunity.
- Compare that total with the manufacturer’s figure only after checking its test mode and battery condition.
- Ask an owner or dealer about the route’s hills, traffic and passenger use, but treat anecdotes as context rather than a standardized test.
3. Make home charging a practical fit
Before paying a deposit, identify the exact parking bay and the socket that will be used. You need a dry, ventilated location, a suitable earthed outlet and permission to run or install the connection if you live in an apartment. Have the installation checked by a competent electrician; do not assume a convenient-looking extension board is safe for repeated charging.
Charger and socket differences by variant
Chetak’s published examples show why the model number matters:

| Variant | Charger arrangement | Specified supply in the cited information | Questions to confirm before delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3501 | Onboard charger and supplied cable | 220 V, 15 A earthed socket | Is the 15 A circuit available at the parking point, and is the supplied cable the one listed for your order? |
| 3502 | Offboard charger | 220 V, 5 A earthed socket | Where will the offboard unit sit while charging, and can it remain dry and ventilated? |
| 3503 | Offboard charger | 220 V, 5 A earthed socket | Does the installation match the owner’s manual for this exact variant? |
| 3001 | Offboard charger | 220 V, 5 A earthed socket | Can the charger be carried or stored securely without exposing it to rain or heat? |
Bajaj advises charging in dry conditions with the genuine supplied cable and charger and a properly earthed socket. Follow the latest owner’s manual rather than a generic social-media recommendation. Never substitute a charger because its plug fits: voltage, current, communication and battery-protection requirements may differ.
Charging time and daily routine
Ask for the charge time from the state of charge you normally reach, not just a claim for an empty-to-full cycle. Ather’s 450S FAQ, for example, lists home charging from 0–80% in 6 hours 36 minutes and 0–100% in 8 hours 36 minutes. Those figures are specific to that model and its stated equipment; they should not be generalized to other Ather scooters or to another charger.
Match the charging window to your life. A rider who can plug in overnight may value reliable slow charging and a nearby service centre more than a slightly higher headline range. A rider without a private socket must map usable public charging on every regular route and confirm that the connector, access hours and payment method work for the scooter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Compare battery warranties by the actual promise
A warranty headline is incomplete without both its calendar and kilometre limits. Record which limit comes first, what is covered, how battery health is measured, the exclusions, transfer rules and the location where a claim must be filed. Separate the standard warranty from an optional paid plan.

| Provider or plan | Published coverage | Important conditions and limits | What to verify on your certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chetak product and lithium-ion battery warranty | 3 years or 50,000 km, whichever comes first | Chetak states that scheduled maintenance at authorized service centres is required for validity. | Exact start date, maintenance records, exclusions, transferability and the process for diagnosing a battery issue. |
| Ather Eight70 add-on | Up to 8 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first | The stated plan replaces the battery if health falls below 70% during coverage; exclusions apply. Ather says battery-health data is reliable only after 10,000 km. | Whether the add-on is available for your variant, its price, health-test method, claim limits and what happens if the scooter changes owner. |
| Ola support warranty information | Battery defect and manufacturing coverage are described on the support page | The page lists exclusions including damage caused by negligence while charging. Terms can vary by model, offer and purchase date. | The current base and top-up warranty certificate, charging-related exclusions and authorized-claim procedure for your order. |
A degradation promise is different from a defect promise. A defect warranty may address a failed component, while a degradation plan uses a defined battery-health threshold. Ask how the threshold is calculated, whether diagnostic fees apply and whether a replacement is new, refurbished or capacity-equivalent if the written terms specify that distinction.
Keep evidence for a claim
- Save the invoice, warranty certificate, delivery inspection and vehicle identification number.
- Keep scheduled-service invoices and odometer readings in chronological order.
- Use only the approved charger and cable and follow the charging procedure in the manual.
- Report warning messages promptly; continued use after a serious fault can complicate diagnosis.
5. Verify service where you actually live
National network size is not the same as useful local capacity. Search the manufacturer’s service locator with the buyer’s PIN code before purchase. Call the listed centre and ask whether it handles the exact model and variant, how appointments are booked, whether common wear parts are stocked and how a disabled scooter is transported.
Chetak’s product website claims more than 4,100 service touchpoints across India. That is the company’s national claim, not an independent count and not proof that a particular location has parts or repair capacity for your problem. The locator and a direct conversation with the local workshop matter more than the headline number.
Questions for a service centre
- What is the normal wait for a scheduled service and for a no-start or charging fault?
- Can the centre perform battery diagnostics and warranty work on the exact variant?
- Is roadside assistance available in your PIN code, and what are the hours and towing limits?
- Which maintenance items are mandatory for warranty validity?
- How will you receive updates if a part is ordered?
Ather’s 450S FAQ recommends service every 5,000 km. That interval is model-specific; do not apply it automatically to another scooter. Chetak directs owners to authorized workshops for scheduled service, so obtain the maintenance schedule for the exact vehicle and keep the required records.

6. Build a shortlist with comparable questions
| Criterion | What to compare | Buyer check |
|---|---|---|
| Range | Published figure, test cycle, mode, battery condition and variant | Compare with your longest routine and retain a practical reserve; do not treat IDC as guaranteed daily distance. |
| Charging | Supplied charger type, socket/current, charging duration and public-network fit | Confirm parking, safe earthed power and compatibility with the exact model. |
| Battery warranty | Time and kilometre caps, defect versus degradation coverage, thresholds, exclusions and transfer | Read the certificate and separate base coverage from paid add-ons. |
| Service | Nearby authorized centre, service requirements, booking and assistance | Search by PIN code and ask about the exact model before purchase. |
Then add the factors that affect daily use: on-road price in your city, seat comfort, floorboard and storage, speed on the roads you use, passenger space, braking and lighting equipment, security features, parts availability and the ease of obtaining consumables. A scooter that meets the range target but is uncomfortable, difficult to park or unsupported locally can be a poor value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. A step-by-step buying process
- Map the routine. Measure the longest normal round trip, list passengers and luggage, and mark hills, fast roads and likely detours.
- Set the charging boundary. Inspect the parking point, identify the socket and earthing, and obtain approval for any electrical work.
- Collect variant-specific documents. Download the current brochure, owner’s manual, price sheet and warranty certificate for each exact variant under consideration.
- Normalize range claims. Write the test cycle, ride mode, battery condition and stated distance in one comparison sheet. Exclude figures with missing conditions until clarified.
- Check the daily charge window. Compare the stated charge time with the hours the scooter is normally parked. If home charging is impossible, verify public chargers on every regular route.
- Read warranty exclusions. Note the first-to-expire time or distance limit, maintenance requirements, battery-health threshold, charging exclusions and claim procedure.
- Verify local support. Use the service locator with your PIN code, call the centre and confirm model capability, appointment times, parts and roadside assistance.
- Test the real ergonomics. Sit in the riding position, try the stand and storage, check passenger foot space and operate the controls with the gloves or helmet you use.
- Calculate ownership cost. Include registration and insurance in your state, electricity, periodic service, tyres, consumables, accessories and any optional warranty or roadside plan. Use the current city quotation rather than an online national starting price.
- Save the paperwork. Keep the final quotation, variant and charger specification, payment receipt, warranty certificate and service schedule together.
8. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by headline range alone
A larger IDC number may be measured in a different mode or under different conditions. Compare the complete test description and your route, not the number in isolation.
Assuming every charger is interchangeable
Onboard and offboard systems can require different sockets and handling. Use the supplied equipment listed for your variant and ask the service centre before buying an accessory. Ather publishes a compatible 700 W charger for specified models; that does not make it a universal charger for every scooter.

Believing a national service count guarantees local repairs
Confirm the nearby workshop, parts and appointment process directly. A large network claim cannot tell you whether your local centre can diagnose a high-voltage fault this week.
Failing to preserve maintenance records
If scheduled maintenance is a warranty condition, missing invoices or using an unauthorized workshop can create a dispute. Ask what records are accepted and retain them.
Charging in unsafe conditions
Do not charge in rain or with damaged cables, improvised adapters or an unverified socket. Stop and contact authorized support if the charger, connector or battery shows heat, damage, odor or repeated fault messages.

9. Questions to settle during the test ride and handover
- Which ride modes are available, and what changes in acceleration or speed between them?
- Where is the charge port, and can you connect it without moving the scooter?
- What warning appears when charging is interrupted or the battery is low?
- What is included in the delivered vehicle: cable, offboard charger, lock, roadside assistance or software features?
- Which items are excluded from the battery warranty, and who authorizes a health test?
- How do you book service, report a charging fault and arrange towing outside business hours?
Request a handover demonstration of charging, dashboard warnings, tyre-pressure guidance, storage limits and the emergency procedure. Photograph the odometer, vehicle identification number, charger label and visible condition on delivery.
10. What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited manufacturer pages provide useful variant specifications, warranty language and service guidance. They do not establish a market-wide ranking, an independent reliability result or a representative consumer survey. In particular, there is no comparable independent real-world range test here. Use the official documents to verify what each company promises, then make the practical decision from your route, charging access and local support.
