No single model is established as the best choice for every semi, vocational truck, bus, trailer, or heavy machine. Start with the service manual and the battery currently installed, then match case size, terminal layout, voltage, battery count, charging system, cold-cranking amps (CCA), reserve capacity, and amp-hours to the truck’s duty cycle.
Group 31 AGM is a major commercial-truck category. It is often a useful starting point, but “Group 31” is not a universal fitment guarantee. The candidates below are manufacturer-documented options, not results from an independent head-to-head test.

What makes an AGM battery suitable for a large truck?
AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries are valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. Glass-fiber separators hold the electrolyte in place, and the cells are designed to recombine gases during normal charge and discharge. That construction can suit commercial vehicles that need strong starting performance, resistance to vibration, and power for accessories when the engine is off.

Exide and ODYSSEY specifically identify hotel loads or auxiliary equipment as applications for their commercial AGM products. A truck that only needs to crank an engine has a different battery requirement from a sleeper tractor powering refrigeration controls, liftgate equipment, an electric auxiliary power unit (EAPU), or cab HVAC while parked.
Fitment comes before brand or rating
A battery can have an impressive CCA number and still be unusable if it does not fit the tray, cables, hold-down, vent arrangement, or charging system. Before ordering, record the following from the truck and its documentation:
- Battery group or case designation, such as Group 31 or Group 31T.
- Length, width, and height of the installed battery and the available tray clearance.
- Positive and negative terminal positions when viewed in the same orientation as the existing battery.
- Terminal style: conventional top posts, threaded studs, or another specified connection.
- Nominal voltage and the number of batteries connected in the starting bank.
- Required CCA, reserve-capacity rating, and any stated amp-hour requirement.
- Hold-down hardware, cable reach, venting provisions, and polarity.
- Alternator and battery-charger requirements, including any AGM setting specified by the vehicle or charger maker.
East Penn says its AGM Group 31 uses the same case and cover configuration as a traditional Group 31. That helps when a truck is already designed around that case, but it does not establish that every Group 31 AGM has the same terminals, dimensions, or polarity.

- Read the service manual. Use the manufacturer’s battery group, voltage, CCA, and charging instructions as the controlling requirements.
- Photograph and measure the existing installation. Capture the label, terminal orientation, cable routing, hold-down, and available clearance. Measure the complete battery, not just the tray.
- Count the batteries. A truck may use one 12-volt battery or a bank of multiple batteries. Replacement batteries must match the bank’s voltage and configuration.
- Confirm the terminal variant. A Group 31T model and a Group 31 model may not have interchangeable terminal arrangements. Verify whether the cables require top terminals or threaded studs.
- Check the charging system. Confirm that the alternator, shore charger, solar controller, or auxiliary charger has the correct AGM profile or settings specified for the battery.
- Get written confirmation for unusual installations. Fleets, mixed battery banks, imported vehicles, and equipment with EAPUs or refrigeration loads should be checked with the vehicle or battery maker’s fitment support.
Manufacturer-documented AGM candidates
The table compares published specifications and intended applications. The figures come from the named manufacturers and should not be treated as directly comparable test results: rating standards, test conditions, model revisions, and regional specifications may differ.

Choose by the truck’s duty cycle
Starting-only or light accessory use
If the truck is normally started after sitting and has limited electrical demand while parked, prioritize the service-manual CCA requirement, correct case size, terminal compatibility, and charging-system match. More CCA is not a substitute for correct polarity, adequate reserve capacity, or a battery that physically fits.
Frequent short trips, idling, or repeated starts
Repeated starts and incomplete recharge can leave a battery chronically undercharged. Compare the manufacturer’s reserve-capacity and amp-hour data, and verify that the alternator can restore the energy used during the route. An AGM label does not remove the need for a charging system that is correctly sized and functioning.
Sleeper “hotel” loads
Hotel loads include cab lighting, electronics, communication equipment, HVAC, refrigeration controls, and other equipment used while the engine is off. Estimate the current draw and parking duration, then compare that demand with the battery bank’s usable energy and reserve capacity. A battery specified for hotel loads still needs the correct bank size, isolation strategy, and recharge plan.

Auxiliary and vocational equipment
Liftgate trailers, reefers, EAPUs, winches, and other auxiliary systems can impose high peak currents or deep cycling. ODYSSEY identifies these kinds of applications for its ODV31/ODV-ACE31 family, while Exide positions the EK2303 for high-power, long-haul hotel functions. Those descriptions indicate intended use; they do not override the vehicle maker’s fitment requirements.

How to interpret the important ratings
Cold-cranking amps (CCA)
CCA is a starting-current rating measured under a defined test standard and temperature. Use the standard and rating specified by the vehicle or battery documentation when comparing products. The published figures in this category range from 925 CCA for the Komatsu EP9A31 to 1,250 A CCA for the Exide AGM PRO EK2303, with Interstate listing 1,150 CCA for the 31-AGMX. Because the sources use different product pages and regional conventions, those numbers should not be treated as a laboratory ranking.
Reserve capacity
Reserve capacity indicates how long a battery can provide a specified current under a defined test condition. Interstate lists 220 minutes at 25 A for the 31-AGMX. That figure is useful only when the test current and rating method match the comparison you are making. It is not the same as a guarantee that a truck can run a particular load for 220 minutes.
Amp-hours
Amp-hours express capacity under a stated test regime. Interstate lists 103 Ah for the 31-AGMX, while Exide lists 230.0 Ah for the EK2303. The two values should not be compared without checking test duration, rate, temperature, rating standard, and battery configuration. In a multi-battery bank, total nominal capacity depends on how the batteries are connected, but the vehicle maker’s system design remains authoritative.

Dimensions, case and terminals
Case dimensions and terminal type are hard fitment constraints. Interstate publishes 13 1/16 × 6 7/8 × 9 9/16 inches and top termination for the 31-AGMX. Exide publishes 518 × 274 × 240 mm and a D06 box size for the EK2303. ODYSSEY’s cited Group 31 candidates use threaded stud terminals and an external vent. Confirm clearance above the case, cable reach, hold-down contact, vent routing, and polarity before purchase.

AGM charging requirements and limitations
AGM batteries are VRLA batteries, not maintenance-free versions of a conventional flooded battery that can be charged with any setting. East Penn states: “For this process to work, VRLA batteries must be charged at specific voltages.” It also warns that overcharging can open the valve, allow the battery to dry out, and cause failure.
- Use the AGM charging profile specified by the battery maker and vehicle maker.
- Do not select a charger setting merely because the battery is labeled 12 V.
- Verify alternator regulation and auxiliary-charger settings after installation.
- Do not mix batteries with materially different age, type, capacity, or state of health in the same bank unless the system designer explicitly permits it.
- Investigate persistent low state of charge, excessive voltage, parasitic draw, or charging faults instead of repeatedly replacing batteries.
AGM construction can reduce electrolyte-spill risk and tolerate vibration well, but it remains sensitive to incorrect charging. A battery that is repeatedly overcharged or left undercharged may fail regardless of its advertised CCA or cycle capability.
Installation and replacement procedure
- Make the vehicle safe. Park on a stable surface, apply the parking brake, switch off loads, and follow the truck manufacturer’s isolation procedure. Wear eye protection and insulated gloves appropriate for the work.
- Record the existing setup. Photograph cable positions, jumper links, vent hoses, hold-downs, and battery labels. Mark polarity and the order of batteries in a bank.
- Disconnect as specified by the manual. On multi-battery systems, follow the prescribed negative-first or isolation sequence. Never allow a tool to bridge a terminal and grounded metal.
- Inspect the tray and cables. Remove corrosion, check cable lugs and grounds, and repair loose hold-downs or damaged insulation before installing the replacement.
- Verify the replacement one more time. Match voltage, case dimensions, terminal style, polarity, venting, and the required ratings. Do not force a battery into a tray or adapt cables in a way that compromises strain relief.
- Install and secure the battery. Keep terminals clear of the hold-down and confirm that the case cannot move. Route venting exactly as specified for the model.
- Reconnect and test. Reconnect in the manufacturer’s sequence, restore any battery-monitor settings, start the vehicle, and verify charging voltage and warning lamps according to the service procedure.
- Check parked-load behavior. With the engine off, confirm that isolation switches, EAPUs, hotel-load controls, and low-voltage cutoffs operate as intended.
Troubleshooting common problems
The new battery will not fit
Stop rather than modifying the tray or forcing the hold-down. Recheck the group designation, dimensions, terminal position, and height clearance. A Group 31T, a Group 31 with a different terminal arrangement, and a regional case size may not be interchangeable.
The truck cranks slowly despite a high CCA rating
Inspect state of charge, cable voltage drop, grounds, starter condition, and the battery-bank connections. A high published CCA cannot compensate for a discharged battery, corroded connection, undersized cable, or failing starter.

The battery repeatedly goes flat while parked
Measure the actual hotel or auxiliary load and compare it with the bank design. Look for refrigeration controls, inverters, HVAC, alarms, and parasitic draws that remain active. Confirm that the EAPU or charger is recharging the bank and that low-voltage protection is configured correctly.
The battery becomes hot or loses capacity
Stop charging and investigate. Excessive charging voltage, an incorrect charger profile, a shorted battery, or poor connections can create heat and damage. Have the vehicle or battery maker’s service network test the system before returning the truck to operation.
One battery in a multi-battery bank fails first
Check for unequal state of charge, mismatched age or capacity, poor interconnects, and uneven cable lengths. Test the complete bank and charging system. Replacing only one battery may produce an imbalanced bank unless the manufacturer’s procedure allows it.
How fleets should specify and buy AGM batteries
For a single truck, the service manual, existing label, and physical inspection usually provide the starting information. For a fleet, create a fitment record for each vehicle and battery bank rather than assigning one battery to every truck.
- Record make, model, engine, model year, battery count, group/case, dimensions, terminal layout, and required ratings.
- Separate starting-only vehicles from sleepers, reefers, liftgate trailers, and EAPU-equipped units.
- Require the exact manufacturer part number and revision, not only “Group 31 AGM.”
- Verify regional availability and warranty terms at the time of purchase.
- Keep charger and alternator settings documented for each battery type.
- Track installation date, failure symptoms, charging measurements, and duty cycle to identify vehicle-system problems.
For unusual equipment, imported vehicles, mixed battery technologies, or high auxiliary loads, obtain fitment confirmation from the vehicle or battery manufacturer. A dealer or battery finder can help source the correct regional SKU, but the final match should be based on the truck’s documented requirements.

Bottom line for large trucks
Use “best AGM battery” as a fitment question, not a universal ranking. Group 31 AGM is a relevant commercial-truck category, but the correct choice depends on the truck’s case and terminal configuration, battery-bank voltage, CCA requirement, reserve capacity, parked electrical load, and charging system. Interstate 31-AGMX, ODYSSEY Evolution ODV31/ODV-ACE31, Exide AGM PRO EK2303, Komatsu EP9A31, and East Penn’s Intimidator AGM Group 31 are manufacturer-documented candidates with different configurations and intended uses. Select among them only after matching the exact vehicle and duty cycle, and treat every published rating as a specification to verify rather than proof of overall superiority.
