The safest way to buy a used Tata Tigor EV is to identify its exact version first, then make the sale conditional on a written battery State of Health (SoH) report from an authorised Tata EV service centre. Match the car’s registration and VIN to the correct battery and range specification, verify remaining warranty in writing, inspect the battery enclosure and charging system, and investigate private versus commercial use before negotiating.
A full-charge percentage on the dashboard is only the battery’s current state of charge; it is not a health certificate. Tata’s owner manual says battery capacity naturally falls with age and use and directs owners to an authorised service centre for an SoH inspection when capacity or range declines.

Start by identifying the exact Tigor EV version
“Tigor EV” is not one uniform specification in the used market. Tata’s support table separates XpresT, ET++, Ziptron and Xpress T versions, with different battery capacities and range-test labels. Do not apply the 315 km figure to every car advertised as a Tigor EV.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the registration certificate, VIN, original invoice or service record, and the car’s battery designation to identify the row that applies to the individual vehicle. If the seller cannot establish the version, treat every range and warranty claim as unverified until Tata confirms it.

| Version shown in Tata’s support table | Battery capacity | Published range metric | C75 estimate | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tigor XpresT | 21.5 kWh | MIDC P1: 213 km | 150–170 km | Use only for a confirmed XpresT car. |
| Tigor ET++ | 25.5 kWh | MIDC P1: 277 km | 190–210 km | Do not compare its P1 result directly with a Ziptron P1+P2 result. |
| Tigor Ziptron, support-table row 1 | 26 kWh | MIDC P1+P2: 265 km; MIDC P1: 315 km | 200–220 km | Confirm which support-table row and equipment level match the VIN. |
| Tigor Ziptron, support-table row 2 | 26 kWh | MIDC P1+P2: 250 km; MIDC P1: 315 km | 190–210 km | Use the row matching the registered version, not the highest number in an advert. |
| Xpress T | 24 kWh | MIDC P1: 261 km | 170–190 km | Verify that the registration is Xpress T rather than a similarly named fleet variant. |
MIDC P1, MIDC P1+P2 and C75 are different labels. They are not interchangeable test results. Tata’s product page describes the Tigor.ev with a 26 kWh lithium-ion pack and a 315 km ARAI-certified range. That is a certification figure for the listed model, not a promise that an older used car will still travel 315 km on a charge.
For a confirmed Ziptron car, Tata’s support material describes an IP67-rated pack, CCS2 compatibility, and charging by DC fast charger or a regular 15 A outlet. Stated charging times are approximate under standard conditions and can vary with temperature, charger, battery state and installation.
Understand what battery health means
State of charge is not State of Health
State of charge (SoC) tells you how much energy the car estimates is currently available. A battery can display 100% SoC even when its maximum usable capacity has declined. SoH is the diagnostic assessment of the battery’s present capability compared with its expected condition, normally produced by the vehicle’s diagnostic system and interpreted by an authorised technician.
Tata’s Tigor EV owner manual states: “The capacity of the High voltage battery will decrease with time and usage to hold charge like all such batteries.” It says this can reduce the vehicle’s initial mileage range and describes the decline as normal and expected. The same manual advises: “During such decrease in charge capacity and range of vehicle, contact an authorized service centre and get the SoH of Battery pack get inspected.”
Ask for a report, not a verbal percentage
Request a recent written report from an authorised Tata EV service centre. Ask the seller to provide it before you pay a deposit, and check that the document identifies:
- the vehicle identification number (VIN);
- the test date and odometer reading;
- the reported battery SoH or capacity finding;
- stored diagnostic faults and warning history;
- any battery-management, cell-balance or isolation findings recorded by the technician;
- the service-centre identity and job-card or invoice reference.
A screenshot without a VIN or date is weak evidence because it may belong to another car or reflect an old reading. A dashboard range estimate, a seller’s claim that the car “gives full range,” or a generic scanner result should not replace an authorised diagnostic report. Generic scan-tool compatibility is not established for every Tigor version, and the high-voltage pack is not user-serviceable.

- Record the identity. Ask for the registration number, VIN, model year, exact version or trim, original registration date and current odometer.
- Establish the use category. Request the registration history and ask whether the car was privately owned, fleet-operated, or used as a taxi or commercial vehicle.
- Request service records. Look for dated invoices, scheduled maintenance, software or recall work, charging-system repairs, accident repairs and any battery or motor work.
- Ask about high-voltage events. Get a written answer about collision, flood or water exposure, high-voltage warning lights, charging faults, isolation faults and battery-pack replacement or repair.
- Obtain the SoH report. Insist on the VIN, date, odometer and diagnostic findings rather than accepting an informal battery percentage.
- Check warranty eligibility. Ask Tata to confirm in writing what battery and motor warranty remains for this VIN, who is recorded as owner, whether the registration category affects eligibility, and what transfer formalities are required.
- Plan an independent inspection. Use an EV-qualified technician who can inspect the battery enclosure, charging hardware, electrical systems and ordinary mechanical components.
If the seller refuses a battery assessment, cannot explain the registration history, or will not permit a professional inspection, pause the purchase. A low asking price does not compensate for an unknown high-voltage repair liability.
Inspect the car safely at the viewing
Confirm the car before applying a range baseline
Compare the VIN stamped or displayed on the vehicle with the registration document, service invoices, diagnostic report and warranty correspondence. Verify the odometer across those documents. Resolve any mismatch before discussing range or price; a specification for the wrong version can make an apparently attractive comparison meaningless.
Examine the battery area without touching high-voltage parts
With the car safely parked, look at visible portions of the underside for impact marks, deep scraping, crushed covers, bent mounting points, corrosion, fresh sealant or paint that suggests a repair. Ask the technician to raise the vehicle and inspect the enclosure professionally.
Do not remove covers, open the pack, disconnect orange cables or attempt a battery repair. Tata directs owners to authorised service for high-voltage work. After a collision, Tata recommends an authorised inspection to establish whether the battery remains correctly connected and whether the pack or its protection has been damaged.
Check warning lights and charging behaviour
Turn the car on with the seller present and allow the instrument cluster to complete its self-check. Record any battery, powertrain, charging, insulation or service warning. A warning that disappears after startup still deserves an explanation and a diagnostic scan.

Ask the seller to demonstrate AC charging using the car’s normal equipment and, where practical and available, DC charging through the CCS2 inlet. Observe whether the connector locks, charging begins consistently, the car reports plausible power and the session ends without a fault. A demonstration is a screening check, not proof of battery health; charging speed depends on the charger, temperature, battery state and site supply.
Inspect the charging flap, inlet, cable, plugs and seals for heat damage, bent pins, moisture, looseness or improvised repairs. Confirm that all promised cables are present and match the car’s equipment.
Use a controlled drive rather than trusting one range number
Tata notes that range changes with driving conditions. Higher speed and uphill driving use more energy, while stored high or low temperatures can affect capacity. A short trip in traffic with the air conditioner running cannot be compared fairly with a gentle, flat-road trip in mild weather.

- Record starting SoC, displayed range, odometer and outside temperature.
- Use a repeatable route with a mixture of urban and open-road driving, noting speed, traffic, hills and climate-control use.
- Drive smoothly and avoid deliberately driving until the battery is nearly empty.
- Record ending SoC, distance, displayed range and any warning or power limitation.
- Give the notes to the technician; do not convert one trip into a precise battery-capacity calculation.
The result can reveal an obvious mismatch, sudden range collapse or a charging fault, but only a proper diagnostic assessment can establish SoH.
Complete the ordinary used-car inspection
The traction battery is important but not the only expensive system. Check:
- tyre age, tread, uneven wear and sidewall damage;
- brake discs, pads, parking brake and signs of corrosion from prolonged standing;
- suspension noise, steering play and wheel alignment;
- body-panel gaps, paint differences, repaired crash structure and water ingress;
- cabin electronics, air conditioning, windows, locks, displays and warning chimes;
- 12-volt battery condition and evidence of repeated jump-starting;
- charging flap, cables, emergency equipment and keys;
- underbody corrosion, especially around fasteners and repaired areas.
These checks complement the battery report. They cannot substitute for it.

Verify warranty for this VIN
Tata product and support material states an original Tigor Ziptron battery and motor warranty of eight years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, subject to the applicable terms. This is a model-level original term, not confirmation that a particular used car still has coverage.

- whether the warranty transfers automatically or requires notification and documentation;
- what exclusions, accident provisions or unauthorised repairs apply.
Tata’s current lifetime-battery-warranty overview lists newer model terms but does not list the Tigor EV in its displayed coverage table. Do not apply those newer headline terms to a Tigor. The vehicle’s original warranty booklet and written confirmation for its VIN are decisive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investigate private, fleet and taxi history
Commercial use does not automatically make a Tigor EV defective, but it changes the questions you must ask. A fleet or taxi car may have accumulated high annual mileage, frequent fast charging, long idle periods with climate control operating, or multiple drivers. Those conditions make consistent records and an independent SoH report especially important.
Check registration history, insurance claims, service invoices, odometer plausibility and charging records. Look for unexplained gaps between inspections, sudden odometer changes, repeated body repairs or a transfer from commercial to private registration shortly before sale. Ask the seller to support the stated history with documents rather than relying on the listing description.

Red flags that should stop or delay the purchase
- The seller claims a 100% dashboard charge proves the battery is healthy.
- The advertised range does not identify the version or mixes MIDC and C75 figures.
- The SoH report has no VIN, date, odometer or service-centre identification.
- The VIN differs between the car, registration, service records and diagnostic document.
- There is a high-voltage, charging or insulation warning with no written diagnosis.
- The underside shows impact or flood evidence and no authorised inspection follows.
- The seller refuses AC or DC charging demonstration without a credible reason.
- Odometer, ownership or commercial-use history has unexplained gaps.
- The seller promises warranty coverage but will not obtain Tata’s written confirmation.
- Battery or orange-cable work was performed by an unknown workshop.
Any one of these may have an innocent explanation, but the burden is on the seller to document it before you commit money.
Negotiate only after the evidence is complete
Use the verified SoH, exact version, remaining warranty, documented history, charging performance and immediate mechanical repairs to set your offer. Do not subtract an invented battery-replacement amount from the price when no diagnosis supports it; instead, make the transaction conditional on resolving the uncertainty.

If a seller will not allow an authorised battery assessment or written warranty check, the rational decision is to walk away or wait. Another listing with slightly higher mileage but verifiable records can carry less financial risk than a cheaper car with an unknown high-voltage history.
A practical inspection-day checklist
- Registration certificate and VIN match the car.
- Exact version, battery size and range metric are identified.
- Original registration date and odometer are recorded.
- Private, fleet or taxi history is documented.
- Service invoices and accident records are present.
- Authorised SoH report includes VIN, date, odometer and findings.
- Written Tata warranty confirmation is obtained.
- Battery enclosure is inspected by an EV-qualified technician.
- No unaddressed high-voltage or charging warning is present.
- AC charging is demonstrated; DC charging is checked when practical.
- Controlled drive notes include SoC, distance, conditions and climate use.
- Tyres, brakes, suspension, body, electronics, cables and 12-volt battery are checked.
- Sale is conditional on the promised documents and inspection results.
A used Tigor EV should be priced as a specific, documented vehicle—not as an anonymous example of a model name. Version identity establishes the right range baseline; an authorised SoH report establishes the battery evidence; warranty and history determine how much risk remains; and a careful inspection reveals the costs that a dashboard range figure cannot.
