The safest way to buy a used Range Rover Sport is to buy the individual car, not the badge: verify its VIN and service records, budget for luxury-SUV running costs, and pay for a Land Rover/JLR specialist inspection before you commit. The second-generation L494 (2013–2022) can deliver strong performance, comfortable long-distance travel and genuine off-road ability, but reliability and repair bills vary sharply with engine, market, maintenance and condition.

The L494 is the second-generation Range Rover Sport, sold from 2013 through 2022. A ten-year span covers several engines, trims, emissions standards and equipment changes, so “a used Range Rover Sport” is not one mechanical proposition. Reliability: acceptable survey results, but no guarantee for your car
What Car?’s reliability guide, updated 5 August 2026, reports the 2013–2022 Range Rover Sport third of eight luxury cars in its latest survey, with a 92.6% overall reliability score and a 22% fault rate. Brakes and the engine were the most common concern areas; reported faults also involved bodywork, engine electrics and the exhaust. Ten percent of faults in that survey cost owners £751–£1,000. Faulty cars could still be driven in the survey and most were repaired in a day or less.
Those are survey results across a model range, not a prediction that a particular vehicle will be trouble-free. Owner reports on the same guide include suspension, infotainment and electrical faults, warning lights, unusual noises, repeat dealer visits, parts delays and unexpectedly high repair bills. Auto Express likewise records numerous owner-reported problems, some expensive to fix. The practical conclusion is not that every L494 is unreliable; it is that condition, maintenance evidence and a pre-purchase inspection have unusually high value.
How to interpret the percentages
- 92.6% score: a published survey measure for the 2013–2022 model, not a durability warranty.
- 22% fault rate: the share reported in that survey; it does not identify the risk for a specific year, engine or mileage.
- £751–£1,000: the repair-cost band covering 10% of reported faults in that survey; other repairs were cheaper or more expensive.
- Repair time: “most fixed in a day or less” describes surveyed cases and does not account for parts delays or repeat visits reported by some owners.
Budget for ownership, not just the purchase price
UK guides show why a cheap example can be false economy. Auto Express lists diesel and plug-in-hybrid servicing every 12 months or 16,000 miles, while petrol models are listed at two-year or 21,000-mile intervals. Its guide figures include an oil-and-filter change of about £300, a service with fuel and pollen filters near £500, and diesel maintenance generally around £500–£1,400. It also lists larger scheduled services for some petrol and plug-in-hybrid cars. Brakes, suspension and tyres are additional to those quoted service amounts.

Fuel-economy figures need their test-cycle label
What Car?’s UK guide gives older NEDC examples of 46.6mpg for the 2.0 diesel and 40.4mpg for the 3.0 diesel. Its newer WLTP examples are 32mpg for the 3.0 SDV6 diesel and 18.9mpg for the petrol SVR. NEDC and WLTP are different test cycles, and real-world consumption varies with traffic, tyres, temperature, speed, load and towing. Use these figures to compare variants cautiously, not to promise a fuel bill.
Choose the engine and trim around your actual use
There is no universally best L494 engine. Diesel, petrol and plug-in-hybrid versions trade fuel use, performance, emissions access, towing suitability and potential repair exposure differently. Towing ratings vary by engine and trim, so verify the rating on the exact vehicle documentation rather than relying on a model-wide claim.

For any engine, compare the complete maintenance file, cold-start behaviour, diagnostic results, emissions restrictions, insurance quote, towing requirement and remaining warranty. A lower-mileage car with gaps in its history is not automatically safer than a higher-mileage car serviced on schedule.

- Match the VIN. Check the VIN on the vehicle against the registration documents, service invoices and seller’s advertisement. A mismatch is a stop sign until resolved.
- Request the full service history. Ask for dated invoices as well as stamped or digital entries. Compare mileage, dates, fluids, filters and major work with the manufacturer schedule; call the issuing workshop if an invoice is unclear.
- Use manufacturer VIN tools. Land Rover’s iGuide asks for a VIN so information can be aligned with the vehicle’s market and specification. The manufacturer states: “Jaguar Land Rover recommend that you enter your VIN to view the very latest information for your vehicle.”
- Check online service-history availability. Land Rover says online service history is available for vehicles built from July 2013 onward through VIN-based access; availability and records can vary by country, so confirm that the particular vehicle appears.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the relevant national authority or an authorised Land Rover retailer to identify outstanding campaigns and confirm completion. Recall totals quoted in buyer guides depend on market and cutoff date and do not prove that a particular car has unfinished work.
- Ask what is due next. Get the date and mileage of the next scheduled service, tyres, brakes, suspension work and any inspection advisories. Price those items before making an offer.
Inspect the body, underside and water entry points
Exterior panels, wheels and bumpers
View the car in daylight on a dry surface. Check panel gaps, paint colour and alignment, then inspect every wheel for kerb damage and every bumper for scrapes. Panel-alignment problems can indicate previous impact or poor repair. Look beneath the vehicle for stone chips, dents, fresh underseal, bent components and evidence of off-road contact. A clean underside is not proof of no damage; ask for an explanation of repairs or coating.

Tailgate, sunroof and moisture
Auto Express flags possible tailgate and sunroof leaks that can affect electrical systems. Examine carpets, boot trim, spare-wheel areas and headlining for dampness, staining, mould or a musty smell. Operate the tailgate repeatedly and check that it latches, releases and stops correctly. Do not accept a seller’s assurance that a wet carpet is only from washing the car without finding and correcting the source.
Doors, glass and seals
Open and close every door, window and sunroof. Look for wind noise, damaged seals, water marks and inconsistent shut lines. Check that central locking, mirrors, lights and wipers work from every control. Electrical faults can be intermittent, so test equipment more than once during the visit.
Inspect the cabin, seats and powered equipment
Operate the driver and passenger seat adjustments, heating and ventilation, steering-wheel controls, infotainment, cameras, parking sensors and climate controls. If fitted, deploy and stow the pop-up third-row seats. Inspect leather, rear-seat bolsters, carpets and the boot for wear that matches the odometer and the seller’s description. A heavily worn interior with unusually low mileage deserves documentary verification.

Engine, suspension, brakes and electronics: checks that matter
Cold start and four-cylinder timing-chain risk
Arrange to see a four-cylinder car with the engine cold. Ask the seller not to warm it beforehand, then listen during the first seconds for timing-chain rattle or knocking. Confirm scheduled service history. What Car? warns that an untreated chain failure can damage the engine, so unexplained noise or missing maintenance evidence should end the inspection or trigger a specialist diagnosis before any deposit.
Leaks, noises and warning lights
Look under the engine and transmission for fresh fluid, inspect coolant levels and reservoirs for contamination, and listen for unusual noises at idle and under load. A warning light, fluid leak or noise is a fault to diagnose, not a harmless characteristic to discount because the vehicle still drives.
Air suspension and ride
Check that the suspension rises and lowers through its available settings, sits level after being parked and does not sag at one corner. On the road, note slow height changes, harshness, knocking, steering pull and repeated suspension messages. Have the car inspected on a lift; visual checks alone cannot reveal every air-suspension or underbody problem.
Brakes and tyres
Measure remaining tread and inspect tyres for uneven wear, sidewall damage and mismatched brands or sizes. During a safe test drive, check that braking is straight and smooth, with no vibration, grinding or persistent warning. Price discs, pads and tyres separately because they are outside some quoted service packages.

Electronic and diagnostic scan
Use a generic OBD-II scanner only as an initial screen. It may read some diagnostic trouble codes but may not interrogate every JLR-specific module or reveal intermittent faults. A manufacturer-capable scan should cover powertrain, steering, suspension, tyres, brakes, software, seats and safety systems. Save the report and ask the specialist to explain current, historic and pending codes before you buy.
Take a structured test drive
- Start from cold. Observe the start-up, idle, warning lights and first gear engagement.
- Drive at low speed. Check steering weight, suspension height changes, parking sensors and camera operation.
- Use urban and open-road sections. Listen for drivetrain, suspension or wind noise and watch the temperature and warning displays.
- Brake progressively. Check for pull, vibration, noise or pedal abnormalities in a safe location.
- Test every mode and powered feature. Operate the tailgate, seats, infotainment and climate controls again after the drive, when faults may have appeared.
- Reinspect after parking. Look for fresh leaks, a new warning message, an uneven ride height or hot mechanical smells.
Pay for an independent specialist inspection
Commission a Land Rover/JLR specialist before exchanging contracts, ideally one that will put the vehicle on a lift and use manufacturer-capable diagnostics. The inspection should document body and underbody condition, leaks, suspension operation, brakes and tyres, engine noise, stored faults, software messages and evidence of previous repairs. This is especially important because reported concerns span mechanical, suspension, infotainment and electrical systems, while water entry can create secondary electrical faults.
Ask for a written report with photographs, safety-critical defects, items due immediately, likely near-term expenditure and issues that need further testing. A seller who refuses a reasonable independent inspection, insists on a non-refundable deposit first or will not provide the VIN should be treated as a high-risk transaction.

A practical buying sequence
Shortlist several vehicles rather than negotiating around one. First eliminate cars with VIN discrepancies, missing history, unresolved recalls, obvious water ingress or refusal of an independent inspection. Then compare the surviving cars on cold-start behaviour, diagnostic results, suspension and underbody condition, tyres and brakes, upcoming service cost and local insurance and fuel quotations. The strongest candidate is the one whose documented condition leaves the fewest expensive unknowns, even if its purchase price is not the lowest.
After the inspection, put every immediate and likely near-term repair into the offer calculation. If the seller will not adjust the price or complete agreed work, walk away; another L494 will have a clearer history.
