The right design may be grid-connected PV, a dedicated solar pump, PV with a water reservoir, battery-backed PV, or a hybrid. Start by documenting the farm’s objective, energy use, irrigation duty, site conditions and outage requirements, then require proposals that show their assumptions and local utility economics.
1. Set the job the solar system must do
A system designed to reduce utility purchases is evaluated differently from one intended to keep irrigation running during outages. Write the primary objective before comparing equipment or installer proposals. A farm may have more than one objective, but rank them so trade-offs are explicit.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Reduce grid purchases: Solar offsets energy used by pumps, refrigeration, ventilation, workshops, buildings and other electrical equipment.
- Supply remote irrigation: A dedicated PV pump can serve a well, pond or other source without a utility connection. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Farmer’s Guide to Going Solar states: “Solar can offset power required for pumping and provide power to remote irrigation systems, requiring no grid connection.”
- Maintain production during outages: The design must identify which pumps, controls, cooling systems or communications must continue operating and for how long.
- Support future electrification: Include planned electric tractors, cold storage, fans, processing equipment or additional irrigation capacity rather than sizing only for this year’s loads.
Establishing the objective early follows procurement guidance from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which recommends defining savings and backup goals before evaluating project options.
2. Build an electrical load profile
Collect at least 12 months of utility bills and interval data when available. Bills show total consumption, demand charges and the tariff that determines the value of solar production. Interval data reveals when the farm actually uses power, which is essential when irrigation runs outside daylight hours or when exports receive less than the retail rate.

Inventory every existing and planned load
| Load category | Record | Why it affects the design |
|---|---|---|
| Pump motors | Motor rating, starting method, operating hours, flow and season | Motor starting current and long seasonal runtimes influence inverter, controller and array requirements. |
| Buildings and workshops | Connected power, daily schedule and any large tools | Daytime coincidence can improve on-site solar use; intermittent tools may create short high-demand peaks. |
| Refrigeration and cooling | Continuous or cycling operation, critical temperature limits | Perishable products may require backup power even when irrigation is idle. |
| Ventilation and livestock systems | Fans, heaters, alarms and controls, including night operation | Some loads are life-safety or animal-welfare critical and cannot simply be curtailed. |
| Future equipment | Expected capacity and commissioning date | Adding it later can require inverter, service or interconnection changes. |
Separate critical loads from deferrable loads. A critical-load panel can keep selected equipment operating from a battery or generator while noncritical loads remain off during an outage. Document motor horsepower and voltage, not only annual kilowatt-hours; a system can have adequate energy on paper yet fail to start a large motor if power electronics are undersized.
3. Define the irrigation water job
Solar pump sizing starts with water, not panels. For each crop or irrigation zone, estimate seasonal volume, required flow and the hours in which water must be delivered. Ask whether irrigation can occur whenever sunlight is available or whether water must be delivered at a fixed time.
Measure the variables that determine pump duty
- Water volume: Required daily or weekly volume by crop and season.
- Flow rate: The flow needed to operate sprinklers, drip zones or filling equipment correctly.
- Source-water level: Static and pumping levels in a well, or the operating level of a pond, canal or tank.
- Elevation: Vertical lift from the water surface to the discharge point or reservoir.
- Pipe and fitting losses: Friction through the actual pipe diameter, length, valves, filters, elbows and emitters.
- Operating schedule: Hours per day, days per week and any required night or cloudy-day operation.
Total pumping head combines elevation, the change in water level while pumping, pressure required at the outlet and friction losses. A pump curve must meet the required flow at that total head. The NREL Handbook of Water Pumping explains the relationship between water demand and total pumping head; its July 2003 publication date means its examples should not be treated as current farm consumption benchmarks. Use current measurements for the design.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use the hardest season as the design case
Compare the season with the least favorable relationship between sunlight and irrigation demand. A crop may need the most water during a period of high solar production, or demand may peak during a cloudy season. A qualified designer should model monthly solar output and water requirements rather than using an annual average that hides a shortfall.
4. Estimate the solar resource and inspect the site
Use a location-based production model such as NREL’s PVWatts for an initial estimate of grid-connected PV generation. Treat that result as screening information, not a final guarantee. A site-specific assessment must verify orientation, tilt, shading, soil or roof condition, equipment placement, cable routes, electrical service and access for construction and maintenance.

Compare possible array locations
- Roof or barn: Uses existing space, but the structure, roof age, fire access and livestock or dust environment must be checked.
- Ground mount: Usually simplifies access and orientation, yet consumes land and may conflict with drainage, crops, fencing or machinery.
- Agrivoltaic layout: Keeps land in crop or grazing use, but row spacing and panel height affect sunlight, machinery clearance, structural cost and energy density.
- Remote pump site: Reduces long electrical runs when the array and pump are colocated, but requires secure equipment, service access and protection from flooding or livestock.
Account for dust and pollen from field operations in production estimates and maintenance plans. Shading from trees, silos, grain elevators or seasonal structures can reduce output more than a simple map-based estimate suggests.
5. Choose the operating architecture
The following options are starting points for investigation. The best choice depends on the farm’s utility service, water location, schedule, outage objective and available space.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Architecture | Best fit to investigate | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Grid-connected farm PV | The farm has electrical service and substantial daytime or annual electric loads. | Generation value, export compensation, tariff, interconnection capacity and upgrades are utility- and site-specific. |
| Dedicated solar water-pumping system | A remote source can be served by a direct PV pump and the irrigation schedule is flexible. | The pump, controller and array must match flow, total head, seasonal sunlight and source conditions. |
| PV with a water tank or reservoir | Water can be pumped while sunlight is available and used later. | Storage capacity, land, foundation and water-quality requirements must be provided; this stores water, not electricity. |
| PV with battery storage | Energy is needed after sunset, during low-sun periods or for selected critical loads during outages. | Battery sizing, replacement planning, controls and cost add complexity; value depends on timing and resilience needs. |
| Agrivoltaic or ground-mounted PV | Land must retain crop, grazing or another agricultural use. | Panel height and row spacing influence tractor access, crop conditions, structural cost and output per unit of land. |
Grid-connected systems
Grid-connected PV is often the simplest way to offset existing farm consumption. Confirm the service voltage, transformer capacity, protection requirements and interconnection process before selecting an inverter. Ask the utility how exported electricity is credited, whether demand charges remain, and whether the tariff changes by time of day. Rules, incentives and compensation differ by state and utility; surplus power should not be assumed to earn the retail purchase rate.
Dedicated solar pumps
A direct solar pump can avoid a long grid extension. The controller should vary pump speed or otherwise manage changing solar input while protecting the motor from dry running, overcurrent and unsuitable voltage. Compare the pump curve and controller operating range with measured flow, total head, well conditions and the solar resource for the intended season. A generic “solar pump kit” is not a specification: compatibility must be demonstrated for the actual pump and water job.
6. Decide between water storage, batteries and backup generators
Water storage and electrical storage solve different problems. A tank or reservoir lets the farm pump when the sun is available and irrigate later. It is often simpler and more economical for a dedicated pumping application when the irrigation system can accept stored water and the site has room for the required volume.

Batteries are appropriate when electricity—not only water—must be available at a different time. They can support night pumping, controls, refrigeration, communications or a selected critical-load panel. Define the required autonomy, peak motor-starting power, allowable depth of discharge, temperature range, fire-safety provisions and replacement budget. Do not size a battery from daily energy alone; motor starts and simultaneous loads can determine inverter and battery power ratings.
A grid or generator may remain the most practical backup for prolonged low-sun periods or unusually high irrigation demand. State exactly which loads receive backup and whether automatic transfer is required. A hybrid design can use PV for routine energy, a tank for water buffering and a generator or battery for resilience.
7. Protect agricultural access in the layout
Fixing an array footprint before mapping farm operations creates avoidable conflicts. Show tractor and implement paths, turning areas, row spacing, panel-edge height, livestock movement, irrigation lines, drainage, fencing, underground utilities and maintenance access on the site plan.
Wider row spacing can improve machinery access and allow more sunlight to reach crops, but it reduces electricity produced per unit of land. Raising panels may preserve clearance and agricultural use while increasing structural and installation costs. Specify the largest implement that must pass, not only the equipment used today, if crop rotation or future machinery could change the requirement.
Protect cables and equipment from rodents, livestock, flooding, chemical exposure and vehicle impact. Include an accessible isolation point and room to replace filters, controllers, inverters and pumps without removing crops or dismantling fencing.

8. Improve irrigation efficiency before enlarging the array
Every unit of water avoided is also pumping energy avoided. Inspect leaks, pressure losses, clogged filters, oversized application rates and irrigation timing before final solar sizing. Zoning, pressure regulation and well-maintained drip or sprinkler equipment can reduce required flow or operating hours.
DOE water-efficiency guidance includes rain-sensing controls that pause irrigation during rain events. Such controls must be matched to crop requirements, soil type and the existing irrigation controller; stopping irrigation at the wrong point can harm a crop even while saving energy. Document the efficiency measures in the load model so the PV and pump are not oversized for waste that will later be corrected.
9. Compare installer proposals on equal terms
Request proposals that use the same load, water and operating assumptions. A lower panel count or lower quoted price is not a meaningful comparison if one proposal omits seasonal irrigation, exports, interconnection work or backup loads.
Require these technical details
- Array DC capacity, inverter or pump-controller ratings and expected annual and monthly production.
- Solar-production assumptions, shading treatment, degradation assumptions and the weather data source.
- Pump model, curve, design flow, total pumping head, expected operating hours and protections for dry well, low water or overload.
- Battery usable energy and power, critical-load panel, autonomy assumptions and replacement or warranty terms, if storage is included.
- Tank or reservoir volume, usable level range, controls and overflow or water-quality provisions, if water storage is included.
- One-line electrical diagram, service voltage, interconnection equipment, transformer or line upgrades and responsibility for utility approval.
- Structural design, foundation assumptions, wind and snow considerations, roof condition and agricultural clearance dimensions.
- Operations and maintenance schedule for modules, filters, pumps, controllers, inverters, batteries and vegetation or dust management.
Require these commercial and regulatory details
- Total installed price separated from optional storage, trenching, fencing, civil work and service upgrades.
- Financing terms, incentives and tax treatment identified for the farm’s jurisdiction and ownership structure.
- Utility tariff, demand-charge treatment and export-credit assumptions shown explicitly rather than summarized as a generic payback.
- Permits, agricultural land-use reviews, stormwater requirements and interconnection studies listed with their costs and schedule.
- Equipment warranties, workmanship coverage, response times and who performs service locally.
Without the farm location, monthly use and tariff, array area, current and planned loads, seasonal water demand, flow, source level, total head, outage requirement and utility conditions, no defensible system size or payback can be claimed.
10. Follow a practical project sequence
- Write the objective and constraints. State savings, remote pumping, outage coverage, production protection, land limits and the date future loads may be added.
- Collect measurements. Assemble bills, interval data, motor nameplates, pump tests, water levels, flow readings, pipe drawings and a seasonal irrigation calendar.
- Separate loads and water zones. Mark critical, deferrable and future electrical loads; record each crop or irrigation zone’s volume and flow requirement.
- Screen solar production. Use a location-based model for an initial range, then obtain a site survey for shading, structure, soil, access and electrical service.
- Model architecture choices. Compare grid PV, direct solar pumping, water storage, batteries and hybrid backup against the same seasonal water and load cases.
- Map the farm operation. Confirm machinery clearance, livestock routes, irrigation lines, drainage, cable paths and maintenance access before fixing the array.
- Issue a consistent request for proposals. Give every bidder the same load data, water measurements, operating schedule and required deliverables.
- Verify utility and permitting requirements. Obtain written interconnection, export-credit, tariff, land-use and inspection requirements for the actual site.
- Commission against the design. Test pump flow and pressure, controller protections, critical-load transfer, monitoring, alarms and utility anti-islanding functions before relying on the system for a crop cycle.
Common design mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing panels before measuring water demand
Symptom: The array looks adequate, but the pump cannot deliver required flow at the actual outlet pressure. Correction: Recalculate total head with measured levels, pipe losses and required pressure, then select the pump and controller before finalizing PV capacity.

Using annual averages for a seasonal crop
Symptom: Annual modeled energy appears sufficient while the crop’s peak-water month has a deficit. Correction: Compare monthly solar production with monthly water demand and provide a tank, grid, generator or battery for the shortfall.
Assuming exported electricity has retail value
Symptom: The financial model promises savings that do not appear on utility bills. Correction: Rebuild the model with the actual tariff, demand charges, export-credit rules, fixed charges and any interconnection upgrade costs.
Ignoring motor starting and simultaneous loads
Symptom: The system has enough daily kilowatt-hours but trips when a pump starts or another large load runs. Correction: Specify starting current, inverter surge capability, soft-start equipment and the permitted combination of simultaneous loads.

Blocking farm access
Symptom: Panels, posts or cables interfere with implements, livestock or irrigation repairs. Correction: Redesign using the largest required machinery envelope, wider spacing or greater panel height, and price the resulting structural changes before approval.
Relying on batteries for a water problem
Symptom: A costly battery is installed mainly to shift water pumping by a few hours. Correction: Compare the required water volume and site capacity for a tank or reservoir; reserve batteries for electricity timing, critical loads or backup where they provide a distinct benefit.
What a site-specific recommendation must establish
A credible design report should show the farm’s monthly electrical load, seasonal irrigation volume, flow and total head, modeled solar production, array and equipment locations, operating controls, backup behavior, utility assumptions, maintenance plan and full installed cost. It should explain what happens during cloudy weather, a utility outage, a low well level, a failed pump or a tank that reaches its minimum level.
Use the report to choose the architecture that meets the farm’s actual objective. A grid-connected array may be best for an electrically served farm with daytime loads; a direct solar pump may suit a remote source; a reservoir can buffer irrigation timing; batteries can protect critical electrical service; and a hybrid can combine those functions. The decision is sound only when the water job, farm operations, solar resource and local utility rules are evaluated together.
