The safest choice is the pet ride type that is actually shown in your local app for your route and pickup time. For an ordinary pet, check for Lyft Pet or another clearly labeled pet option, or ask the matched Uber driver whether they will accept the animal. For a service animal, use the standard ride category: service animals are covered by separate accommodation rules and do not depend on a paid pet option.
Night travel adds a second decision. Book only after confirming the animal and passenger limits, keep the pet contained as appropriate, wait indoors, verify the car and driver against the app, share the trip, and know how to reach emergency help. Availability, pricing and safety features can vary by market, so the app at booking time is the final authority.

Start with the animal category
Rideshare rules depend first on whether you are traveling with an ordinary pet or a service animal. Treating the two as the same can lead to an unnecessary cancellation or an incorrect assumption about your rights.
Ordinary pets
Dogs, cats and other companion animals are not automatically accepted in every rideshare. Uber says a driver may choose whether to take a non-service pet. Once a driver accepts, Uber recommends telling the driver that an animal is coming and bringing a carrier or blanket to reduce mess or potential vehicle damage. Non-service pets are not allowed on UberX Share.

Service animals
US policies treat a service animal separately. Uber’s US service-animal policy, modified February 3, 2025, says drivers cannot deny a ride because of a rider’s service animal. Lyft likewise says drivers must accommodate service animals. You do not need to locate a paid Pet ride to request transportation with a service animal. A service animal is a dog (and, in limited legal contexts, another animal) trained to perform work or tasks for a person with a disability; an emotional-support or comfort animal is not automatically covered by the same policy.
If your animal is not a trained service animal, follow the ordinary-pet process even if the animal is small, quiet or carried in a bag.
Compare the available ride choices
The comparison below reflects the published US policy descriptions. It does not establish that a particular option will appear in your city tonight.
| Choice | Animal rule | Availability | People and animal limits | Price information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lyft Pet | One well-behaved ordinary animal | Only in select markets; the option must appear in the app | Up to four people and one animal | An additional fee; the universal amount is not stated and must be read in the local fare estimate | That the ride type is offered for your pickup and destination, and that your group fits |
| Uber standard ride | Non-service pet accepted only if the driver agrees; service animals are accommodated under policy | Standard ride availability is local; a driver can decline an ordinary pet | Check the selected vehicle’s normal passenger capacity; no separate ordinary-pet allowance is stated | No universal pet surcharge is stated for a driver-approved ordinary pet; rely on the app’s fare and any local terms | Message the matched driver with the animal’s type and size before approaching the car |
| UberX Share | Non-service pets are excluded | Where UberX Share is offered | Not applicable for an ordinary pet | Not applicable for an ordinary pet booking | Choose another category if you are traveling with an ordinary pet |
| Standard ride with a service animal | Service animal must be accommodated; a Pet category is not required | Subject to normal service in the local app | Follow the selected ride’s normal passenger limits | No separate paid Pet option is required; the cited policies do not state a special universal fare | Use the platform’s service-animal support process if a driver refuses service |
Lyft’s Pet description is specific: one well-behaved animal and as many as four people. If your party has two animals, more than four riders or an animal that cannot remain controlled, the described option does not fit. The policies do not publish a universal nighttime wait-time, acceptance rate or safety comparison between providers.

Check local availability before you leave home
A pet-friendly label is not a nationwide guarantee. Lyft says Pet rides are offered only in select markets, and the exact fare is shown locally. Other services may expose different categories or none at all at a particular hour.
- Open each rideshare app you could use and enter the actual pickup and destination.
- Review the complete list of ride categories rather than assuming a standard car will accept an animal.
- Look for a named Pet option. If it is absent, treat that as unavailable for this booking; do not rely on a remembered feature from another city.
- Check the quoted fare, passenger capacity and any displayed pickup notes. A Pet option’s extra fee is local, not a universal published amount.
- Allow time for a second attempt if no pet category appears. You may need to contact a local transport provider or arrange another mode rather than ordering an unsuitable standard ride.
Availability can change between the outbound and return journeys. Check again before you start back, especially after midnight or when crossing a city boundary.
Book an ordinary pet ride step by step
When a dedicated pet option is shown
- Select the Pet category and confirm that the displayed passenger and animal limits match your group.
- Enter the destination and review the fare, pickup point and estimated arrival shown by the app.
- Keep the animal ready before requesting the car. Use a carrier or blanket when appropriate for the animal and vehicle; Uber specifically suggests these items to reduce mess or damage, but the cited guidance does not make one particular product mandatory.
- At the pickup, stay inside until the app indicates the driver has arrived. Bring the animal out only after you have verified the vehicle and driver.
- Before opening the door, compare the license plate, make and model and driver photograph with the app. Do not enter a car that does not match.
When using a standard Uber ride
- Request a regular eligible ride, not UberX Share, because Uber excludes non-service pets from UberX Share.
- As soon as a driver is matched, use the in-app message or call function to state that you have an ordinary pet. Include the species, approximate size and whether the animal is in a carrier.
- Wait for the driver’s response. Uber says drivers may choose whether to accept a non-service pet, so a booking confirmation alone is not proof that the animal has been accepted.
- If the driver declines or does not respond and you cannot confirm acceptance, cancel or rebook through a category and driver that will take the animal. Do not pressure a driver at the curb.
- Follow the same indoor waiting and vehicle-verification steps used for a dedicated Pet ride.
Keep messages factual and brief. A driver needs enough information to make an informed decision, not a long explanation of why the trip is important.
Plan a safer nighttime pickup
Darkness changes the pickup risk even when the ride itself is routine. Use the app’s identity and safety features deliberately rather than walking toward the first car that slows down.

- Pet Carrier: 17.5” L x 11” W x 11” H, Recommended max load of 16 lbs cats small dogs. Please do not choose your carrier based on weight--please reference your pet's length and height in selecting a pet carrier size.
- Fits for under-seat dimensions of most airlines. Every airline has a specific set of rules and regulations, please contact with airline before flying with your cats small dogs.
- Mesh windows for ventilation, top and side entry with locking zippers for safety. Carrying handles, adjustable shoulder strap which can also be used as seatbelt, and back strap can fasten the pet carrier to your luggage.
- Pet carrier comes with a removable base insert, which creates a solid surface for your pet to stand on, along with a removable & hand washable cozy fleece pet bed, which offers a cozy sleeping space for your traveling cats small dogs.
- "Toys for pets, of textile materials". Mostly used as a Toy of Fabric Pet Home for pets playing and relaxing.
- Choose a visible pickup point. When possible, use a staffed entrance, well-lit curb or location with cameras. Do not move into a dark side street simply because the map pin is inconvenient; adjust the pin to a legal, visible stopping point.
- Wait indoors. Uber’s rider guidance recommends staying inside until the driver arrives. Keep the pet with you rather than leaving it unattended outside.
- Match all identifiers. Check the plate, make, model and driver photo in the app. Ask the driver to confirm your name instead of volunteering it first, and decline any vehicle that does not match.
- Share the trip. Send the ride details and live status to a trusted person. Tell that person your pickup location, destination and the animal traveling with you.
- Review safety controls before departure. Uber lists trip sharing, optional four-digit PIN verification, GPS trip tracking and emergency assistance among its in-app tools. The exact controls can vary by market, so locate them in your app before you need them.
- Keep the phone usable. Carry enough battery to finish the trip, keep notifications audible and avoid putting the phone where you cannot reach it while handling the pet.
- Trust your judgment. If the driver, vehicle or pickup behavior feels wrong, do not enter. Move back inside and request another ride or use emergency services if there is immediate danger.
These steps reduce opportunities for a mistaken or unsafe pickup; they are not a guarantee of a particular safety outcome. No independent nighttime safety rate is established for either provider.
Prepare the animal and protect the vehicle
Use equipment suited to the animal
A carrier is useful for many cats, small dogs and other animals. A blanket can create a clean barrier for an animal that must sit on a seat or floor. Uber names both as ways to reduce mess or damage. The guidance does not establish a universal restraint standard, so choose equipment that is safe and practical for your animal, fits the vehicle and does not obstruct the driver.
Consider behavior and health
- Do not book a shared or tightly timed ride if the animal is likely to panic, soil the vehicle or behave aggressively.
- Allow a bathroom break for a dog before pickup and bring cleanup supplies.
- Keep a cat or other small animal secured rather than carrying it loose through a parking area.
- Bring water only if it can be managed without spilling; avoid feeding a large meal immediately before a moving trip if motion sickness is a concern.
- Tell the driver about unusual size, mobility needs or equipment before the car arrives.
Protect other passengers
Lyft’s described Pet ride allows one well-behaved animal with up to four people. That limit is about the ride type, not a promise that every animal will be comfortable with a full passenger load. If the pet needs extra space, reduce the human party or choose transportation designed for that need instead of exceeding the stated limit.
Service animals: use the correct process
Do not select a paid Pet category merely to obtain a ride with a service animal. The cited US policies require accommodation in standard rides. Drivers may ask only questions allowed by applicable law and platform policy; a rider should not be required to present certification simply because the animal is working.

If a driver refuses a service animal, document the trip details in the app and use the platform’s support channel. If you are in immediate danger at pickup, prioritize getting to a safe place and contacting emergency services. A refusal involving an ordinary pet is different: drivers may decline a non-service animal under Uber’s stated policy, and a Lyft Pet ride is an optional category where offered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the booking goes wrong
No Pet option appears
Do not assume a standard Lyft or Uber car will accept an ordinary pet without confirmation. Recheck the pickup pin and time, since categories can depend on market and route. If the option still is not shown, ask a standard Uber driver only if you can wait for explicit acceptance; otherwise arrange another form of transport.
The matched driver declines
Thank the driver, keep the animal with you and rebook through a category or driver that accepts it. Avoid arguing at the curb or trying to conceal the animal. On Uber, driver discretion for non-service pets is part of the stated policy.

The car arrives with the wrong identifiers
Do not enter. Compare the plate, make, model and driver photo again, move to a secure indoor location and report the mismatch through the app. If someone pressures you to get in, call emergency services if you feel threatened.
Best Value
- Hard sided pet carrier with 2 doors for front and top entry; suitable for cat or medium size dog weighing 12 - 20 pounds
- Durable plastic construction with steel wire doors; screws keep the top and bottom sections securely connected
- Spring load latches ensure easy one-handed door opening and closing; top door swings open to the left or right and includes a top carry handle
- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
- Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size
Your group exceeds the limits
Lyft’s Pet description allows up to four people and one well-behaved animal. Split the party into separate rides only if each ride can safely and legally carry the people and animal involved, or arrange a larger vehicle or dedicated pet transport. Do not count on an extra seat or a second animal being accepted informally.
The animal becomes distressed during the trip
Tell the driver promptly and request a safe stop when practical. Keep the animal secured while the vehicle is moving. If the situation becomes a medical emergency, call emergency services; do not ask the driver to provide veterinary care.
How to make the final choice
Use this order of priority when two apps appear to work:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Accommodation: identify whether the animal is an ordinary pet or service animal.
- Confirmed availability: select only a category displayed for this route and time.
- Acceptance: for an ordinary pet on Uber, obtain the matched driver’s agreement; for Lyft, verify that the Pet category’s one-animal limit fits.
- Capacity: keep the human party and animal count within the selected ride’s stated limits.
- Price: compare the fare shown in each local app, including Lyft’s additional Pet fee where applicable.
- Night procedure: favor the option that lets you wait indoors, verify the car and driver, share the trip and reach in-app emergency help.
- Preparation: bring a suitable carrier or blanket and any cleanup items your animal needs.
If no option satisfies all seven checks, postpone the pickup or use another transportation method. A lower displayed fare is not a good trade for an unconfirmed animal policy or an unsafe meeting point.
Limits of what the policies establish
The published guidance does not provide a universal Pet fare, guaranteed acceptance rate, expected nighttime wait, comparative crash or incident rate, or performance result for a particular breed or temperament. It also does not guarantee that a Pet category available in one city will be available in another. Treat the local app, the matched driver’s confirmation and the safety details shown on your screen as current, trip-specific information.
