For a new U.S.-market 2026 Miata, choose the transmission first. Sport and Club are manual-only, while Grand Touring is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The engine is the same across the cited 2026 range, so the meaningful decisions are transmission, performance versus comfort equipment, roof style, and—if buying used—the generation and condition of the individual car.
This guide covers the 2026 U.S. lineup and Mazda’s NA, NB, NC, and ND generations. Equipment, engines, prices, and transmissions vary by model year and country, so verify the exact year, market, roof, options, service history, and VIN before buying.

Start with the decision that changes the car most
Use this order to narrow a Miata without getting distracted by trim names:
- Transmission: decide whether you want the six-speed manual’s involvement or the convenience of an automatic.
- Generation and year: choose the character, size, roof choices, and age range that fit your budget.
- Roof: compare the traditional soft top with the RF retractable-fastback design, or an earlier retractable hardtop where offered.
- Trim and equipment: choose performance hardware, comfort features, and packages.
- Condition: for a used car, service records, accident history, modifications, inspection results, and VIN-specific recall status matter more than a generic “best year” claim.
For a new buyer who wants the simplest recommendation, a manual Club is the performance-oriented choice, while a Grand Touring is the comfort-oriented choice and the only 2026 trim with an automatic option. A Sport makes sense when the base equipment is sufficient and minimizing purchase price is the priority. These are preference-based choices, not universal rankings.

What engine does the 2026 Miata use?
Mazda’s 2026 U.S. announcement says every cited MX-5 Miata model uses a Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500 rpm redline. The announcement describes the six-speed manual as standard; Sport and Club are exclusively manual, and Grand Touring can be ordered with a six-speed automatic and steering-wheel paddle shifters.
That means there is no engine-selection decision within this 2026 U.S. lineup. Select a trim for its equipment, roof, and transmission rather than expecting a higher trim to provide a different engine. The figures above apply to the 2026 U.S. models in Mazda North American Operations’ January 27, 2026 announcement; they are not specifications for every previous generation or every global market.
How to use the engine specification
- The 7,000-rpm horsepower peak and 7,500-rpm redline describe an engine designed to be revved; a test drive should include the upper part of the rev range when conditions permit.
- The 151 lb-ft torque peak occurs at 4,000 rpm, so gear selection and willingness to downshift are part of the manual-driving experience.
- Do not apply the 2026 output figures to an older NA, NB, or NC without checking that car’s exact model-year specifications.
2026 U.S. trims, transmissions, roofs, and prices
The following starting MSRPs come from Mazda’s 2026 U.S. pricing and packaging announcement. Mazda lists destination charges separately and notes an effective August 11 change to that charge, so these are not out-the-door prices. Taxes, registration, dealer charges, accessories, and availability can change the amount you actually pay.

Sport: the entry point
Sport is the base configuration. Mazda lists standard safety and connectivity features and a black cloth soft top. Choose it when those features meet your needs and you would rather avoid paying for Club or Grand Touring equipment. Because it is manual-only in 2026, it is not the budget choice for someone who requires an automatic.
Club: prioritize performance hardware
Club is manual-only. Mazda describes Bilstein dampers, a front shock-tower brace, an induction sound enhancer, DSC-Track mode, and an asymmetric limited-slip differential on specified configurations. Mazda also lists a Brembo/BBS/Recaro package separately. Do not assume every Club or every roof configuration includes every item: confirm the window sticker, build sheet, or VIN-specific equipment on the actual car.

- White base paint with black and red racing accents for an authentic motorsport look
- Detailed track car look with widened fenders, front auxiliary headlights and aerodynamic elements
- Low, sporty silhouette - inspired by the Mazda MX-5 as an iconic roadster and racing vehicle
- Black performance wheels with fine rim design for an aggressive stand
- Realistic licensed model - Mazda MX-5 Miata as a worldwide celebrated sports car classic
A manual Grand Touring receives the performance hardware Mazda associates with Club in the 2026 announcement, while the automatic Grand Touring does not receive that stated manual-specific combination. This distinction is important when comparing a manual Grand Touring with a Club.
Grand Touring: prioritize comfort and flexibility
Grand Touring adds the choice of manual or automatic transmission. Mazda lists heated leather-trimmed seats, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and navigation among its comfort and convenience equipment. It is the logical starting point for drivers who want an automatic or who spend more time commuting and touring than searching for the most track-focused specification.

Choose the six-speed manual when
- You want direct control of engine speed and gear selection.
- You value the traditional lightweight-sports-car experience.
- You are considering Sport or Club, since both are manual-only in 2026.
- You want the manual Grand Touring’s combination of comfort equipment and the performance hardware Mazda specifies for that configuration.
Choose the six-speed automatic when
- Stop-and-go traffic, physical limitations, or personal preference make clutch operation undesirable.
- You want Grand Touring features but do not need the manual-specific performance combination.
- You prefer steering-wheel paddle shifters for occasional manual control without a clutch pedal.
Do not compare a manual Club and automatic Grand Touring as if transmission were the only difference. The trim, roof, equipment, and stated performance hardware change at the same time. Drive both if possible, and check the exact build rather than relying on a badge.
Soft top or RF?
Soft top
The traditional soft top is the straightforward convertible choice and is available on Sport, Club, and Grand Touring in the listed 2026 configurations. It generally gives the clearest open-air character and keeps the purchase decision simpler. Inspect the fabric, seams, seals, latches, rear window, and drain areas on a used example; roof condition can turn into a significant ownership expense even when the powertrain is sound.
RF retractable-fastback
Mazda identifies the RF as having been introduced in 2017. Its powered retractable-fastback roof gives the car a distinctive fixed-roof appearance when closed while retaining an open-air mode. In the 2026 price list, RF is offered with Club manual, Grand Touring manual, and Grand Touring automatic configurations. Compare the roof mechanism, seals, headroom, cargo compromises, and equipment on the exact car rather than assuming every RF has identical features.

Earlier retractable hardtops
The NC generation (2006–2015) offered a power-retractable hardtop. That is a different design and generation from the ND RF. When shopping used, identify whether an advertisement means an NC retractable hardtop or an ND RF before comparing prices, roof operation, or parts.
Miata generations: what the labels tell you
Mazda’s heritage page presents these generation spans:
| Generation | Mazda’s displayed years | Useful identity |
|---|---|---|
| NA | 1990–1997 | Original generation with pop-up headlights |
| NB | 1999–2005 | Replaced pop-up headlights and added a glass rear window to the convertible top |
| NC | 2006–2015 | Added steering-wheel controls and offered a power-retractable hardtop |
| ND | 2016 onward | Design reset with reduced curb weight; RF introduced in 2017 |
These labels organize your search; they do not determine whether a particular car is a good purchase. Model-year equipment, engines, transmissions, safety systems, roof designs, and special packages can change within a generation. Ask for the VIN and exact model year before evaluating a listing.
NA: choose history and condition over nostalgia
An NA can provide the original Miata character, but age makes rust, accident repair, deferred maintenance, worn weather seals, and modifications central buying issues. A clean inspection and coherent service history are more valuable than a low advertised price.
NB: a familiar shape with later details
The NB retains the lightweight roadster formula while changing the front-end design and convertible-top rear window. Check for corrosion, previous track use, suspension wear, and undocumented modifications on each car.

NC: consider the larger, later platform and roof choices
The NC brought steering-wheel controls and the available power-retractable hardtop. Compare roof operation and condition carefully, and verify equipment by year because an NC listing can cover nearly a decade of changes.
ND: the current-generation family
The ND began in 2016, with the RF joining in 2017. For a used ND, identify whether it is an early or later model year, then verify the engine, transmission, safety equipment, software, service records, and roof configuration from the vehicle documentation.

No authoritative cross-generation comparison in the available material establishes one generation as the most reliable, least expensive to repair, or universally “best.” Treat every used Miata as an individual inspection subject.
1. Verify identity and configuration
- Record the VIN, model year, generation, trim, body style, transmission, and roof.
- Compare the VIN or window sticker with the seller’s claims about Club hardware, Grand Touring features, RF equipment, and optional packages.
- Check whether the car is U.S.-market or imported; specifications can differ by market.
2. Review ownership evidence
- Request maintenance invoices, inspection records, and the owner’s manual.
- Look for consistent mileage and dates rather than a single recent service receipt.
- Ask directly about track use, autocross, forced induction, suspension changes, wheels, accident repairs, and prolonged storage.
- Inspect fluid leaks, tire age and matching, brake condition, clutch operation on manuals, automatic shift quality, steering, suspension, and cooling-system condition.
3. Inspect the body and roof
Check panel gaps, paint texture, underbody corrosion, jacking points, subframes, door and trunk operation, windshield surrounds, convertible-top seams, seals, drains, and RF or retractable-hardtop operation. A pre-purchase inspection by a shop familiar with sports cars is worthwhile, especially for an older car or one with modifications.

Mazda published a June 6, 2025 statement about a non-compliance defect notification involving certain 2024–2025 MX-5 Miata vehicles. That statement does not establish whether a particular VIN is included or whether its remedy is complete. Use an authoritative VIN recall lookup and request documentation showing that any required repair was performed before purchase.

Maintenance information and the owner’s manual
Use the owner’s manual for the exact model year. Mazda’s 2026 MX-5 owner’s manual contains model-specific specifications and maintenance information, including fluid capacities. Do not transfer a capacity, service interval, or procedure from a 2026 manual to an NA, NB, NC, or earlier ND without confirming that it applies.
For a used car, match the manual to the VIN and market where possible. Keep records of oil and filter service, brake fluid, coolant, gearbox and differential fluids, spark plugs, belts, battery replacement, tire installation, and roof or seal repairs. Documentation helps you budget the next service and reveals whether a seemingly inexpensive car has deferred work.
Build a budget that reflects the actual car
For a new 2026 Miata, begin with the listed MSRP, then add the destination charge Mazda quotes separately, taxes, registration, dealer fees, insurance, and any options. The $30,430–$41,900 range in the table is a range of listed starting MSRPs for the announced configurations, not a used-market estimate or an out-the-door quote.

For a used car, compare local listings for the same generation, year, roof, transmission, mileage, trim, and condition. There is no substantiated used-market price comparison here, so do not apply a national “average” or a price from another generation without adjusting for those variables. Reserve money for an inspection, tires, fluids, brakes, roof seals, and repairs discovered after purchase.
Quick Recap
A practical decision tree
- Need an automatic? In the 2026 U.S. lineup, restrict the new-car search to Grand Touring and choose soft top or RF.
- Want the most performance-focused factory specification? Start with manual Club, then verify whether the desired limited-slip differential, Bilstein dampers, brace, DSC-Track mode, or Brembo/BBS/Recaro package is fitted.
- Want comfort but still prefer a clutch pedal? Compare manual Grand Touring with Club; the former adds the listed comfort equipment and receives the manual-specific performance hardware Mazda describes.
- Want the lowest listed new-car entry price? Start with Sport soft top manual at $30,430 before destination and other charges.
- Shopping used? Choose generation and roof first, then reject any car with weak records, unresolved VIN recall status, serious corrosion, accident concerns, or modifications you cannot evaluate.
- Still undecided? Drive a manual and automatic where available, operate the roof repeatedly, sit in the car with the driver’s seat adjusted, and compare the actual build sheets side by side.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Club has the same equipment: Mazda specifies hardware and packages by configuration; verify the individual vehicle.
- Assuming Grand Touring always has Club performance hardware: the stated combination applies to the manual Grand Touring; the automatic is different.
- Comparing an RF with an NC hardtop as if they were the same roof: they belong to different generations and designs.
- Using 2026 specifications for an older Miata: engine output, safety equipment, transmissions, and options vary by year and market.
- Buying on generation reputation alone: condition, service, rust, modifications, and recall completion determine the individual car.
- Treating MSRP as the final price: destination and transaction costs are separate.
- Skipping the VIN check: a model-level recall statement cannot tell you whether a particular vehicle needs a remedy.
