Choose the charger around two limits: the Sealion 7 accepts up to 11 kW AC, and your home may provide either single-phase or three-phase power. An 11 kW three-phase wallbox can use the car’s full stated AC capability where the electrical supply and installation support it. A 7 kW or 7.4 kW single-phase wallbox is still a sensible home solution when overnight charging is sufficient or three-phase power is unavailable. A 22 kW wallbox will not make this car charge at 22 kW.
The right charger depends on the car and the house
BYD’s UK model specification lists a CCS2 charging port and maximum AC charging power of 11 kW for the Sealion 7. BYD Europe describes all European versions as having 11 kW three-phase AC charging as standard. Those statements establish the vehicle’s ceiling for normal AC home charging, but they do not establish what every property can deliver. Your service connection, phase arrangement, wiring, protective equipment and local rules still determine which wallbox can be installed safely.

The wallbox rating is only one part of the limit. The vehicle’s onboard AC charger, the home’s available current and any setting that restricts AC current can all reduce the actual rate. Buying a higher-rated unit does not upgrade the car’s onboard charger.

When a 7 kW single-phase unit is enough
A 7 kW or 7.4 kW wallbox is usually adequate if the car is parked for many hours overnight and the household does not routinely arrive with a nearly empty battery before needing to leave again. BYD’s UK figures give indicative 0–100% AC times of 13.5 hours at 7 kW single-phase for two listed trims, and 14.9 hours for a third listed trim. Those are full-charge estimates, not a promise for every session; the manufacturer says charging time varies with conditions and infrastructure.
Single-phase charging can also be the practical choice where the property has no three-phase service, the available supply cannot support an 11 kW circuit, or the route from the distribution board to the parking space would make a three-phase installation disproportionately complex.
When an 11 kW three-phase unit is worthwhile
An 11 kW wallbox is the direct match for the Sealion 7’s published AC limit when the house has a suitable three-phase supply. BYD’s UK sheet gives indicative 0–100% times of 8.6 hours at 11 kW three-phase for two listed trims and 9.6 hours for the third listed trim. The improvement is useful for drivers with shorter parking periods, higher daily mileage or more than one charging window, but it is not a guarantee that every charge will sustain 11 kW.

Why a 22 kW wallbox may still be a rational purchase
BYD lists its Smart Wallbox with charging capacity from 7.4 kW to 22 kW. That product range describes the wallbox’s capability, not the Sealion 7’s acceptance rate. This car remains limited to 11 kW AC, so a 22 kW unit will not shorten its charging time beyond what an 11 kW three-phase supply can provide.

A higher-rated unit can make sense only as a future-use decision—for example, if another household EV may later accept more than 11 kW and the extra equipment and installation cost are acceptable. If the wallbox will serve only this Sealion 7, compare the price and complexity of a 22 kW installation with the value you place on that future flexibility.
How long does a BYD Sealion 7 take to charge at home?
Use the manufacturer’s indicative figures as planning guidance rather than a stopwatch promise:

These figures come from BYD’s UK model specification sheet, edition code 0225. The accessible sheet does not identify the publication date, and it describes the times as indicative. Ambient temperature, battery temperature, the starting state of charge, charging losses, the vehicle’s current setting and limits imposed by the equipment or grid can all change the result. In ordinary use you will often add energy over a partial state-of-charge range rather than perform a 0–100% charge.
Charging power is not always flat throughout a session. The vehicle can reduce current as conditions change or as the battery approaches full, so multiplying a nominal kW figure by time gives only a rough planning model. Treat the 13.5-, 14.9-, 8.6- and 9.6-hour values as the manufacturer’s reference points for the specified trims and infrastructure.

- The spare capacity available after the home’s existing loads are considered.
- The cable size, route length, voltage drop and whether the cable can reach the parking position without unsafe extensions.
- Appropriate circuit protection, isolation, earthing and any required residual-current protection under the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Outdoor exposure, mounting surface, impact risk and protection from water or vehicle movement.
- Permission requirements for rented, shared, leasehold or managed properties.
- Whether the utility connection or local authority imposes an approval or export/import limit.
The applicable electrical regulations and installer requirements differ by country and property. There is no reliable universal installation price, incentive, tariff or approval process without knowing your location and supply arrangement. Get a qualified local assessment before committing to hardware.

Compare wallboxes on the features you will actually use
Power management
Look for a unit that can be configured to the supply and the vehicle rather than one that merely advertises the largest number. The owner’s manual describes supported 7 kW single-phase and 11 kW three-phase charging and notes that the car can restrict AC current according to its setting. Actual current can also be lower because of equipment or grid restrictions. Ensure the installer can set the wallbox correctly and that the vehicle’s limit is not accidentally left below the rate you intended.
Tethered or untethered cable
BYD’s Smart Wallbox product page describes a fixed 5 m cable. A tethered cable is convenient because it is always ready to plug in, but measure the distance from the wallbox to the car’s charge port and consider how the cable will cross a driveway. An untethered design keeps the cable removable and can be tidier in some garages, but you must store and handle a separate cable. Choose based on parking geometry, security and daily routine rather than the nameplate power alone.
Scheduling and connectivity
BYD lists app control, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, off-peak scheduling, RFID and plug-and-charge methods for its Smart Wallbox. These features are useful if you need to delay charging, restrict access or monitor sessions. They do not automatically reduce the cost of electricity: savings depend on your tariff’s time bands, the schedule you set and when the car is plugged in. If your home network is unreliable at the parking location, confirm whether essential charging functions continue locally without an internet connection.
Connector compatibility
The Sealion 7’s published UK specification identifies a CCS2 port. The AC portion of a compatible home cable connects through the Type 2 section of that vehicle inlet. Confirm the connector and cable arrangement supplied in your market, especially if the vehicle was imported or the wallbox is being purchased from another region.

Weather, security and physical placement
Check the manufacturer’s environmental rating and installation instructions for the exact model. Place the unit where the cable can reach the charge port without running through a pedestrian route or under a wheel. Consider lighting, lockability and whether a fixed cable can be protected from deliberate damage. These are site decisions that a remote product listing cannot make for you.
A practical buying process
- Confirm the car’s specification. Read the documentation for your market and trim. For the UK and European specifications covered here, plan around 11 kW maximum AC and CCS2, with 7 kW single-phase and 11 kW three-phase charging supported.
- Identify the property’s phase supply. Ask the electricity provider or a qualified electrician whether the proposed parking location can be supplied with single-phase or three-phase power. Do not infer this from the wallbox listing.
- Describe your charging routine. Note the usual arrival state of charge, departure time, daily distance and how often a rapid overnight replenishment is needed. If the car normally sits overnight, 7 kW may meet the need; if parking windows are short, investigate 11 kW three-phase.
- Obtain a site survey. Have the installer assess capacity, cable route, protection, earthing, mounting, outdoor conditions and local approvals. Request the proposed maximum current in writing.
- Shortlist by power and cable layout. Compare 7/7.4 kW single-phase units with 11 kW three-phase units that match the assessed supply. Consider 22 kW only if a future vehicle justifies it.
- Choose controls and access. Decide whether scheduling, app connectivity, RFID or plug-and-charge is genuinely useful. Check how the wallbox behaves if Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is unavailable.
- Verify the physical reach. Measure the parking bay, charge-port position and cable path. Include enough slack for normal parking but avoid loops where a vehicle can drive over the cable.
- Install and commission it professionally. Use an installer who is qualified for the rules in your jurisdiction. Keep the commissioning settings, protective-device information and manuals with the vehicle records.
- Set the car and wallbox consistently. Check the vehicle’s AC current limit and the wallbox’s configured current. If either is set lower than intended, the car will charge below the advertised maximum.
- Test a normal session. Plug in, confirm that the car recognises AC charging, check the displayed power after the session starts and verify that any schedule activates at the intended time.
How to use the Sealion 7’s charging settings safely
The owner’s manual advises using compliant, standards-conforming charging equipment. It also explains that the vehicle can limit AC current and that actual current may be lower because of equipment and grid conditions. Read the manual for your vehicle’s exact menu names and set the current limit to a value supported by the installed circuit and wallbox. Never raise a vehicle or wallbox limit to solve a slow-charge problem until the installer has confirmed that the circuit can carry it.
If you use off-peak scheduling, set one schedule in the system that controls charging and check that a second schedule is not delaying the start. Depending on the wallbox and vehicle configuration, scheduling may be available in the app, the car or both. A schedule should be treated as a control preference, not a guarantee of a specific energy price.

Buying a 22 kW unit expecting 22 kW in the car
The Sealion 7’s stated AC limit is 11 kW. A 22 kW wallbox cannot bypass that onboard limit. Buy 22 kW only for a justified future-use case or another vehicle.
Assuming every home can deliver 11 kW
An 11 kW three-phase charger needs a compatible three-phase supply and an installation designed for it. If the property is single-phase, a nominally 11 kW wallbox may be configured below that rate or may not be suitable at all.

Comparing only advertised charging power
Two wallboxes with the same kW rating can differ in cable length, load management, connectivity, access control, weather suitability and installation requirements. Compare the complete installation and daily workflow.
Expecting the published time on every charge
BYD’s times are indicative 0–100% figures for specified trims. Temperature, starting charge, charging losses and current restrictions affect a real session. Use the numbers to choose between supply options, not to promise an exact departure state of charge.
Ignoring the cable route
A charger that is technically powerful but awkwardly placed can lead to unsafe cable handling or daily inconvenience. Measure the route and parking position before purchasing a tethered unit.
Using an unverified installation arrangement
The manual recommends compliant equipment. Have the circuit, protection and earthing assessed and installed according to local requirements rather than relying on an improvised outlet or an extension lead.
Troubleshooting slow or failed home charging
The car charges, but below 7 or 11 kW
- Check whether the wallbox is a 7/7.4 kW single-phase model or an 11 kW three-phase model.
- Confirm that all required phases are present and that the installer configured the unit for the available supply.
- Check the Sealion 7’s AC current limit and any load-management setting in the wallbox.
- Allow for grid or equipment restrictions and for power reduction as the battery approaches full.
The scheduled session does not start
- Check whether scheduling is enabled in the vehicle, the wallbox app or both.
- Verify the clock, time zone and tariff window on the controlling device.
- Confirm that the wallbox has power and, where required, a working Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection.
- Temporarily disable the schedule to test an immediate session, then restore one schedule after the cause is identified.
The charger trips or stops repeatedly
- Stop using the circuit and contact the installer if a protective device trips.
- Inspect the connector and cable for visible damage, moisture or contamination without opening the wallbox.
- Check whether household loads are triggering a site load-management limit.
- Use the vehicle and wallbox fault information to give the installer precise timing and error details.
The cable cannot comfortably reach the port
Do not route a cable through a place where it can be driven over, pinched or become a trip hazard. Reassess the wallbox position or use a suitable cable arrangement approved for the equipment.
What to ask an installer before approving the work
- Is the property single-phase or three-phase at the proposed connection point?
- What continuous current and charging rate can the circuit safely support?
- Which protective devices, isolation and earthing arrangements will be used?
- Where will the cable run, and how will outdoor sections be protected?
- How will the wallbox respond when other household loads are high?
- What commissioning tests and documentation will be provided?
- Which local permissions, inspections or utility notifications apply?
- How can the current limit be changed if a different EV is added later?
A simple decision framework
Choose a 7 kW or 7.4 kW single-phase wallbox if your property is single-phase or your normal overnight parking period comfortably covers the manufacturer’s indicative 13.5- to 14.9-hour full-charge figures. Choose an 11 kW three-phase wallbox if your property can support it and the shorter indicative 8.6- to 9.6-hour window is valuable. Choose 22 kW only when future vehicle compatibility justifies paying for capacity that the Sealion 7 itself cannot use. In every case, match the installation to the assessed supply, configure the current limits correctly and confirm the exact vehicle specification for your market.
